OK. For me, this is disastrous!! I drive 45 miles to the area I do rideshare. There is not enough riders in my hometown, so I am forced to drive to a larger market. I rented a Tesla through Uber to see if it was worth it. It was not considering the battery was just over 50% when I arrived to the market location, forcing me to charge the car for almost an hour before I could start my 12-hour shift. I would be able to drive for 3-4 hours before having to charge again. Each charging costing between $18-22 and taking roughly an hour. Three charging sessions per night + the 12 hour shift + 1 hour to and from home each night equated to 17 hour days, at the minimum, with a charging cost of $60+. Now I use my own car which costs me about $50-60 in gas and I can drive for just under 500 miles per day (I average 250-300/day). Still a 14-hour day, but I can earn about $200 in that time doing 20-30 rides. If Tesla comes in with robot cars, this eliminates my ability to do ridesharfe at all, because as I've shown, it is not cost effective for me to have a Tesla in this market. Right now, Lyft is my primary source of income, so this would be terrible for me.
