Xaos is written like that because it comes from the Greek word Χάος so they took exactly the word and used it
Just the comment I was about to post. It's an X ("ex") in the Latin alphabet, but a Chi in the Greek alphabet.
I like the idea that Xaos is so random it can pronounced whichever way you want though.

Yeah, "Xaos" in more recent years keeps making me think of "Professor Chaos" when he was institutionalized as an adult and referred to as sounding like "chow-s". Can't shake it from head-cannon, lol

2nd Edition used so much creativity in making Planescape, but I feel that it’s all been dumbed down for the 5e version. I’m glad I bought all the box sets in the 90’s, and have zero need for the newer ones.
It hasn't been dumbed down so much as it didn't add a whole lot to what already existed. If I had any say in what the 5e box set would have had, it would have had a lot more information on the Outer Planes themselves, many more planar monsters with updated stats (including the missing archdevils, additional demon lords, actual stats for the gate-town leaders and Sigil factols, and the slaad and archon types 5e never introduced), and a lot more magic items and spells.
I agree. I hastily returned my copy of the 5E Planescape boxset after scanning it, and finding it so...tepidly inoffensive. I'm quite happy with the original, "problematic" 2E material.

Speaking of words that are commonly mispronounced: Primer, when referring to a book, is pronounced like the word "prim" but more so. Prim-er. Not "prime-r".
So in the outlands if you have one person from Krin and another from Toril and they both use the gate to go the abyss… is it the same abyss or their worlds Version of it?
The idea I believe is it is the same Abyss. But kind of changes from edition or perspective. I like to think it is the same Abyss and you can this go to Sigil from Dragonlance and reach Toril.
So. Are the gates one-direction?

Where's the gate that leads to the Material Plane? (Don't tell me death, death is not a gate)
There is no gate-town for the Material Plane, because it's not an Outer Plane. There are portals to the Material Plane in many other places though. You have color pools in the Astral Plane that lead to the Material Plane, you have portals to the Material Plane in Sigil, and there are countless natural portals from the Feywild, Shadowfell, and the Elemental Planes to the Material Plane.
No official gate that goes to the Material Plane, you'd go through the astral plane to wind up in the outlands, or another plane.

None shall pass!!
She's only in charge of Sigil and the portals in Sigil. The gates in the Outlands gate-towns are a separate thing from that.
