  • On houseandhome.com/tv, Toronto designer Sam Sacks outlines the steps she took to turn a major fixer-upper into a dream home for her family of five. See how Sam uncovered surprises (like a gracious wood staircase hidden behind a plaster wall) and made the original 1910 features look fresh, plus see how salvaged doors help personalize this formerly 'decrepit duplex.'

    I love this renovation! There's a lot of balance between the modern and the old, unnatural and natural design, intricacy vs simplicity. It feels modern and yet livable. The pantry doors and the bathroom door are great ideas. I'm so glad that she didn't get rid of the fireplace in the bedroom. I feel like the rule is that you *never get rid of a fireplace because it can add charm to any room and can be easily renovated to look modern or antique.

    I recently bought and renovated my very first house so I completely understand why she said the house was in bad shape before she did any work to it. to just quickly glance at the 'before' pics is one thing but once you really take a good look around in person, you find SO many things wrong with a house, esp if it's older. so don't judge. trust me, nobody wants to have to spend a ton of money on their reno, so if she says the house was in bad shape I believe her. plus it's HER home and if she's happy with what she's done to it, then that's ultimately all that matters. personally I would have changed a FEW things but other than that, I think she did a great job. it's gorgeous, looks very fresh and welcoming. nicely done.

      Agreed. I’m about to start a renovation of a 1960s home that hasn’t been lived in in nearly 5 years. You want to keep the historic charm, but you also have to be realistic.

    • @jenns.5791
      @jenns.5791 6 років тому +6

      alophn exactly.
      my home was also empty for 4-5 years and omg what a straight out of the 60s-70s nightmare it was. as much as I wanted to keep a lot of it's "older charm," it has taken me almost 2 years just to get it into a livable state. that's another thing I should add. on TV they make renovations look so easy and quick...pahahaha!! of course it looks quick and easy. that's usually because they have a crew of 30+ people on the job and a much bigger budget to work with than the average person would have. and even if you do have a lot of people helping and a ton of money to pour into a house, if you buy an older house and/or a foreclosure like I did, then you are almost definitely going to run into ( a lot of) things along the way that were not planned.
      I have lost sleep over my house. I have lost patience over my house. and I've almost lost my sanity once or twice. lol. it takes a lot out of you, but in the end (and I promise it does end, lol), it's so worth it, because you've created a home that you can call your own.
      ..congrats on your new house and I wish you the best during your reno. stay strong. 💪 😊

    I liked that she lightened and brightened her old craftsmen style house. She said it was a duplex, so a lot of her effort was bringing it back as a single family house. That old dining room had great woodwork, but was very narrow and needed to be opened up to the new kitchen so both rooms could breath. The painted dining room ceiling still showcases the beautiful coffers, but blends it with the new kitchen's white ceiling. It would have been too visually choppy and disjointed to not color connect those two rooms at the ceiling line. Kudos to her for keeping the dining room window trim stained. It adds the correct pop of gravitas to the combined rooms without overpowering them. They are a grand picture frame for the outdoor views! Likewise, by taking off the kitchen window wood trim and sleekly drywalling around them they blend seamlessly with the modern backsplash and counters. In good design "God is in the details". And choosing what to restore and what to modernize are the multiple design decisions a good interior designer has to make daily. Now, my question is where did she get the mosaic tile for her bathroom? If it isn't too expensive it would add that slight touch of sparkle to my planned small condo's bathroom ceiling redo!

    old and new mixed , very fresh and contemporary not dreary or tired. Love it it breathes fresh life. Come on people lighten up ... why should old remain dark and heavy? It's about personal style and taste. She has good taste in mixing it up...it works.

  • @JanetCaterina

    This type of house can become really heavy and claustrophobic. I am impressed that she achieved a complete comfort zone for all the occupants and kept a spacious look throughout. Serendipity. I don't think we saw a photograph of the plastered in staircase so we don't get to see the heavy, closed in feeling that might have existed before. It was a shame to cover up the dark wood on the ceiling but stripping it would have been the only alternative. She kept the best features of the house - which is not a mansion, please remember !

    I was eating and not paying enough attention and when it ended I wasn't sure what she did to the house. I had to drag back to the beginning to find out and honestly like better the dining, living, and sun room before. The strangest thing is the living room with that white fireplace used to look so quiet and neat to me and then became kind of cluttered after. I do like those old doors she put in.

    American English is very interesting. In almost every video they describe, spaces, areas, places ... as 'moments'. I really don't understand this. Can someone please explain why that is? For me, a moment is to do with time. So how are they using 'moment' to describe an area or design?

    • @user-pu9mh1jz1c
      @user-pu9mh1jz1c 7 років тому

      You are completely correct with the meaning of "moment". However, it is used more colloquially to describe more of an experience or memory, so sometimes designers call decor "moments" because they are small touches that add memorability. Its very hard to explain - I hope this helped you!

    I agree with the majority of the comments. The before house was beautiful. Too much white paint,white tiles, white toilets,tubs etc. In a house with children and adults all I see is fingerprints galore, spills, scuff marks and every little hair and dust ball. Who has the time to keep a place so clean white and pristine. I'm not knocking white since I have some in my kitchen but it's alot of work. I especially loved the dressmaker mannequin. A few splashes of color here and there adds more interest.

      Insulting a total stranger online, for no reason at all, is *FAR* more tragic.

    She just ruined the house, She could embrace the traditional things but what she did was weird af . She just bought white paint and slathered it. What a loser. The original house was stunning. She should be ashamed of herself. It wasn't a major fix. It was destroying.

      What a terrible name to call someone when you merely disagree with her design choices in a property THEY OWN. Buy your own house and do what you please. Differing design ideas should not devolve into degrading another human being -- she is a total stranger to you. So mean-spirited.

    Honesty, the old doesn't mix well with the new. Not a good job.
