I Live In A $250K Houseboat In Toronto, Canada | Unlocked
*Think financial independence look up Donald Nathan Scott.*
It’s beautiful to see this lovely woman so happy. I wish her the best
There's pros and con's when living on a house boat. Anyone thinking of doing this may try renting first, or spending a weekend or a few on a sleeper boat to get an idea on what its like to live on the water. She is not discussing storms, cold weather, smells associated with water/docks, noisy neighbors, boats coming and going, sometimes issues with power, water, sewer systems provided by dock services, etc.
My biggest concern is living on a freshwater lake. In winter and keeping the ice from developing around the hull, power goes out and you’re in deep trouble.
I love it but can’t as I have osteoarthritis 😂😂😂😂
Absolutely phenomenal
What do you expect for 500,000 dollars...............
she said the houseboat doesn't have a motor....how does she get the boat up & out of the water to scrub the rust & scum off it to paint it? must be done every couple of years she says🤷♀that must be expensive
I have a friend who at one time was a housesitter. She would look after houses while people travelled. You move every few weeks or months to another location. She was able to avoid paying rent this way for 8 years. She also did boat sitting for clients for a three year period.
Would she get paid for housesitting? Otherwise, pretty hard to hold down a job when you're on the move all the time.
@@Curious2Know2 When you have high speed internet, many of today's jobs can be done from home. She would also get a small stipend from the owners. But with rent out of the way it gave her more disposable income.
I could do that for a year, but always moving and not a having a home of your own for 8 years sounds very depressing.
My wife and I lived there for 10 years in a floating home and as the saying goes, “the two best times to own a floating home is the day u take ownership and the day u sell it.
whys that?
@@biljanas7931 Well its not like you own the water underneath it, but the shoreline property owner is sure making moring fees bank from that $taint lawrence seaway riverbank tributary. Maybe they have one of those islands in dubai.
Because you are living in a floating trailer park at a hight premium. When the house gets rundown you don't own the land so you have no real value
Lol right!
Some nefarious manipulators seem to have deleted my comment. That's always interesting to make note of.
It's a really worrying trend, but what's worse is that most people are closing their eyes to reality. Life in this country has become unaffordable due to politics. Now people have to live on boats and in "tiny houses" - of course, this is bitter and a real shame in the richest country in the world, but you should talk about it. In our society, there should be living space for everyone.
Canada is not the richest country in the world, the USA is - but I agree with everything else you have said. FJT!
@@chelseagirl278 JT is not responsible for inflation. People need to get educated on how things actually work instead of falling for conspiracy theories and bad information.
@@chelseagirl278the usa is rich yes , but the people arent , so i dont agree. I do agree its getting unliveable in my country, Canada. I am senior so I will be ok , but .i dont see a peaceful future. I see a future , just not agreeable nor peaceful
@@clarkpalace this is exactly the same with Canada
Amen to that.
She has a cozy and idyllic home in an exciting city. I love this story. It is very inspiring.
Good on her for finding a soultion to still live in Toronto!
Looks like the Scarborough Bluffs in the background.
That’s exactly what I was thinking’s
I know the Toronto waterfront pretty well, so I knew this had to be Scarborough
It is.
you are correct!
Bluffers park marina, I suspect? We had a small sailboat in the 70’s and 80’s in Toronto Hydroplane and Sailing Club. Loved being on the water. I think though, winter would be more of a challenge.
October of 2020 bought with inheritance and borrowed money. So even house boats are unaffordable now!
Nearly every home is bought with borrowed money.
Here we go! Million dollar house boats with basements for rent.
Good for her, she looks so wholesome
Unfortunately it's because she's so oblivious to how financially wrecked she's gonna be with $1,500 in monthly expenses and no land or asset in 10 years
@@stephen-he4iw But she will have lived well with more room and access to nature than most tiny condos in downtown Toronto. I lived there. Great city but those shoebox condos will drive you crazy after a few years. Besides, her monthly costs are not that high - she could have a lot saved in a few years and still enjoy living well in the meantime.
Right? I want to bring her some fresh croissants or something.
@@stephen-he4iwlike any other renter?
Such a serene home in the midst of such a serene location.
So lovely to view.
Thanks for sharing, you seem very kind, we wish you the best.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home and water way-of-life! Living close to nature as opposed to being in an urban area is definitely a unique, vibrant way and having ownership is such a secure feeling as opposed to paying the banks for years make one the master and not the slave. I live on an old rustic wooden trawler in the Pacific North- West and love it's 72 year heritage. Many ways to seek fulfillment.
This is awesome. Congratulations!
Love it, good for her. Toronto is expensive to the point of inaccessible in the last few years and she has a space for her that has outdoor area and access to a lake! So what if there are downsides to living on a boat, you can name just as many living in a house, suffocating condo, commuting, etc. She seems happy and her place is super cute! And different.
One of the 25 float houses was listed recently for $700,000 CAD.
That is rediculous.
I ❤ her story 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
They only filmed a little of winter ❄️ Trust me, when it’s -20c out, you don’t wanna be anywhere near that water
When it’s -20c out, I wouldn't be in Toronto
@@jwong1546 Pretty rare to see Minus 20 C in Toronto but I get your point when the weather comes up and you are on the water. I live on the east coast with Nor’ Easter’s and winter storms can be extreme for sure!
@@grantlingley1385 I suspect quite a few owners also have chalets for the winter. If not, and there are others living on the water, time for a little visit and some hot rum toddies! Maybe bring some scones, too.
Yeah -20c near the water is horrible but the cold is part of the Toronto charm.
last winter was super warm, i expect next winter to be the same
Considering the outrageous cost of housing in Toronto, this is a great deal.
Terrible idea, her mooring fees alone are outrageous. She should’ve just bought a condo near the waterfront.
Not if you consider she doesn’t owe any land. If her location kicks her out., she can’t just park the boat and have it livable anywhere
It's better than being homeless. Sadly, more and more people are being priced out of the rental market completely.
But, I would rather buy a condo than live on a house boat. As she doesn't own the dock space or mooring space, the harbor master can evict all the houseboats if they have other plans for the dock.
That's the downside. Which makes it very similar to renting. You are at the mercy of the landlord that owns the dock.
@StarLight-sl9ok She is pleased with her decision, so it doesn't matter what you think she should have done.
Scarborough
Kate seems like a lovely happy young lady. So happy for her.💌
Show us your home in winter.....anyone been on the Lake Ontario shoreline in Feb?.......
Hi Neighbour! Fellow Torontonian here and I'm so happy that you've found a spot in that cozy nook.
Awesome to hear aboat her boat
That's so cute! It looks like a tiny home from the inside! Very well designed🤩😍
Love the decor
Soon we are going to see people living in tree houses
I've got a tree house for $100K to sell ya. lol
No caves
😂that’s awesome
Or tents in the park 😮
Live in space it's free
Fascinating! I lived in a house in the Scarborough Bluffs. It is great to be close to the water. Being right on the water with the bluffs behind and the lake in front looks wonderful. I write this sitting on a deck overlooking Lake Muskoka. Love to be near the water. Not the easiest lifestyle, but far better life than living in a tiny Toronto condo that would cost far more to buy and to maintain. There you look out onto city.
I would like to see this video shot in the winter. Sure it is beautiful looking in spring and summer but lets not forget we have 6 months of winter in Toronto.
I know exactly where this is. At the base of the Scarborough Bluffs! Amazing area!
What a beautiful life ❤
I own a big house in Toronto worth $1.7 Million but your home looks so inviting, cosy and I must say living next to the water was always my dream. YOUR HOUSEBOAT HOME IS SOOO BEAUTIFUL! I dream of living in one and getting rocked by the gentle water waves with the duck and birds singing beside! You've made a very nice decision! ENJOY!
Oh...best addition is the cat❤❤❤❤
Beautiful area. I always wondered what one of those house boats looked like inside, and the tranquility. Good for her. Thanks for sharing 🫶🏾
Do one on Amsterdam house boats!
I would love to visit you. We haven’t gone to your area in about a year now, and we did walk by your home. I would love to wake up to then peaceful space, feeding the ducks with healthy food, and enjoy the view. We always got the feeling that everyone is no nice there. Thank you for sharing.
Oh how awesome it must be during the Canadian winters lol
This was different and pretty cool. Good share
Let's show US prices for a Canadian location, brilliant!
That's a very nice house boat .Toronto and major cities are expensive. But if you work remote , there are 1000 s of small towns where $350,000 , will get you a nice house.
Absolutely but not if you want to live in Toronto
@@ralex3697 you can get a decent condo for that price. Cost of the boat itself doesn't include costs to dock it.
@@butwhytharum not a condo in Toronto
@@chelseagirl278 Jane and Finch you can snag a condo for 280ish.
NO ONE in their right mind would want to live there!!
Lovely home!
Winters would be crazy
$2000 in fees month is crazy. Even with the crazy housing prices in Toronto. You had $300k which could have been a good downpayment and then $2000 a month towards a mortgage. Could have bought a condo downtown of similar size.
Very beautiful!
Waterfront is not cheap but with it. Nice place.
Beautiful inside and out!🏠
You are lucky because houseboats are nearly 1M dollars. Wish you more happiness in your little lovely house.
That house is amazing! Gorgeous area and what a site ! I love your home! 👍🏻🇨🇦
Just found this channel. Nice!
Thanks for the great video my style of living
oh my, she really has a fantastic cozy houseboat.
Awesome!
its beautiful, cozy, multifunction house
Thanks for opening up your world to the outer world. What an incredibly beautiful and peaceful lifestyle. Didn't even know this exist in Toronto. Isn't wonderful when we can dwell in a peaceful and serene environment away from the hustle, bustle and noise of city life enjoying nature, peace and tranquility. Thanks for sharing. All the best.
Omg finally somewhere in Toronto

I gather she works from home. That saves her stress, time, and money from a long commute. Plus the scenery around the marina looks amazing.

@@TheJlee28 I believe that it is Bluffers Park, the Scarborough Bluffs on the east side of Toronto. Folks have been living on houseboats there for years. I know some folks who lived on their sailboat there for about 4 years before they sold & moved north.
@@jackthecanuck6736 so lovely 🥰
@@jackthecanuck6736 yes it is the bluffs
Mooring fees are a killer. Rather like throw this much money at a mortgage rather than wasting them forever... 💯
The mooring fee is almost like paying property taxes. In terms of "wasting," our government definitely doesnt waste that tax money. 🤣
$10k a year is still cheaper than buying a house in TO lol
Aren't they like property taxes?
condo fees can be similar too

Wonderful nice idea..now can you do a -40 winter version of this video
Toronto never sees -40. But it is a wet cold grey winter. Looking out at that view would be great all 4 seasons IMHO. The lake moderates the temp extremes. On a hot sticky July day, go to the bluffs and you'll find it 10 degrees cooler. Same in the winter. Often it snows at the 401 and north. Down there it will be warmer and wetter.
Toronto has never had -40 weather huh
@@Hugo-nw2su Right. It got to -24F in 1859. In 2018 it made news hitting -8F. If you want to see cold weather, Edmonton AB is your place or go where Eskimos hang out. In my 50 years in Toronto, I find the weather grey and a wet cold like England, but not cold crisp and dry like -40.
@@user-od9iz9cv1w yup. We might get a couple chilly days in February but -20 is unusually cold. -40 is unheard of.
Go Kate! She seems so cool.
If I was single, I would entertain the idea, but 250k minimum for a house boat sounds insane... our first home was a mobile and the lot rent fees were more than the mortgage; that got very tiring after a few years.
I agree. I see this as a great home solution for a few more years and then wanting a different lifestyle later in life.
@@vintagejaki751 for sure; we moved after 4yrs, sold the home to my father-in-law just to pay off what was owed, rented for a year while saving up a down-payment and bought an 'actual' home.
Now, 9 years later, we are planning to sell this house and our land (we wanted to build a new home but have decided to avoid that headache), and move up to a bigger home... kiddos and us need a bit more space, haha
@@JacobBanman That sounds about the right way to do things. 👍
Unfortunately, in Canada $250K is the absolute minimum for a studio condo in the cities. A 1 bedroom will be $300-$700K depending on the city, and a 2 bedroom will always be more than $500K. Currently I am in Toronto and renting a 2 bedroom that would be worth $1M, the rent is almost $4K a month..
Muito bom video! very good!
Love the house. I am going to organise the riot guys, boats are even so expensive now
I love your home 💕
Sweet digs toots !
Bluffers Park is beautiful .. the only snag is , much like the beaches, the entire area is swarmed and taken over by inconsiderate visitors setting up camp for the day., spoiling the enjoyment of local residents .
Nice place. It does seem like a hassle in the winter. Good luck to her.
Good for you. Ignore all the naysayers, as I'm sure you do
I would love this
Pretty interesting shelf
You are living my dream! I am so jealous.
Try going down the road in there. One lane each way. The road feeds a beach, a park and boat launch. Its packed every week end. Cars backed up all the way to the main road running east and west. Its like that every weekend from late spring to warm weekends in the fall. No thanks.
Well well..Bluffers Park..what for dinner at the Dogfish Inn?
This is cool but please make the next one in Europe again
I live in a small fishing village in Nova Scotia and I've often thought about a houseboat type cottage but I don't think it would work in my area because of the high waves and swells .. My youngest son has 2 condos in Toronto both are close to the CN Tower , he rents 1 out and lives in the other ..1 is in an older building and 1 is in a new building ..
I assume you live at Buffers Park marina , Scarborough .... south of Kingston Rd and Midland Ave
I am happy for her, she looks happy
This only works if you're:
- retired
- work at home or run a home business
- have no kids to drive to school
Beautiful ❤
I curious how much wood you would typically use in a winter and where would you access it??
How does that work in the winter? Doesnt the lake freeze?
This is very interesting
AMAZING!
She is an inspiration
I live right close to you!
Do you know when they first created this, the price was *$14 000* (not including any fees etc)
Unreal!
Beautiful place though,great choice😊
Good idea, given the high cost of property in the city, what did the government do to help the average Canadian who are priced out of the market and suffering from high rent ??
Nice in the summer. All seven weeks of it.
She's happy with the lifestyle, that's what matters. But the monthly cost is around $3000 cad for financing and mooring fees. Add to that, insurance, heating, maintenance, etc. So cost is probably similar to renting in downtown Toronto.
Wow I’m really impressed with your house boat.
Are there any hidden dock fees.?
I love the whole concept.
Thanks for sharing.
Is it really costly in the winter for running heat.
it looks like she mainly uses the wood stove in the winter
The visitors going to the Scarborough Bluffs have changed a lot since i was born. The park has to put up dozens of Port a potties just to deal with visitors going in the open. It's a dirty dirty city to be in unfortunately. However I grew up in Toronto and have fond memories of the Scarborough Bluffs in the 80s & 90s and the pretty little house boat community and the little bar at the end of the dock.
I think it's unfortunate that people who grew up in the city can't really aspire to home on property real estate ownership. And rent generally takes more than is fair share of income.
ENJOY
Hi there - would you kindly explain how and where one would find these types of rentals? Much thanks
Not sure (or when) you bought your houseboot for $250k, but today you cannot get any of them for under $650k .. and that is for a small 650sqft unit! So you are either really lucky OR this took place back when house prices were reasonable once again showing that Toronto, Canada is out of touch with reality!
Constant work, constant bills and having to swim in your own bath filth all the time... Sounds like heaven....😢. Thank you for showing this video. I was thinking about moving into a house on the water. And this just opened my eyes to what a pain it would be... You would never be able to relax. Constantly doing repairs and paying bills doesn't sound relaxing at all.. you would have to be a dumby or a millionaire to enjoy that... And at the end of the day, I like to take a real shower and wash the dirt, girms and grime away..
I don't really consider Scarborough Bluffs as "near downtown Toronto" but ok. I like it but I'm still skeptical on what it's like in winter. Winters can be brutal in those parts. And the inspection and repair fees that you said occur every 3ish years is what I'd really like to know more about.
At least introduce us to the cats!! 🐈🐈
These "boats or house boats" are NOT boats, they are not able to leave the marina on their own power. They are floating barges and are not for recreational use. Marina use is recreational (also commercial as appropriate) and zoned as such. These homes are taking up space for recreational boaters and also driving up costs for docking etc. The basic rule for people living on vessels was the vessel needed to leave the marina on their own power and return to their slip on a three day notice. This rule stopped people from buying junk boats and living on them. These House Boat units are not built to any standard (not to building standards nor ABYC boat standards ) and as such can not be moved to a building lot if the owner is told that the marina no longer allows these units. Talk to people that have experience gained from the Outer Harbour experience with the development of the failed bid to allow these type units. People lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is only a matter of time before these units are forced to leave. Then what do you do with your unit. You are certainly not going down the road nor going to move to another marina. Again this water is for recreation purposes and if you want to live aboard then you need to live on a boat. This is a very risky purchase and it is just a matter of time before they may be asked to leave. It has been fairly low key in that marina but articles like this may change that situation. You need to do your due diligence and protect your investment.
Things NOT mentioned:
- The water smells different (and not in a good way) at different times of year
- THE PESTS (bug and other) -- what pest loves to lay eggs in water? MOSQUITOS~!
- CANADIAN WINTER on WATER?! (She didn't discuss what the life is like when the weather is not idea for "boating" or "water activity" on great detail -- In Toronto, the winters can get really nasty and messy, and windy -- ICE must be a really huge pain)
- THE MOTION! House boats, like regular boats, are moving on the water as it moves. The location the boat is to sit while you live must be examined so that you know what sort of motion you'll be dealing with and what that looks like in inclement weather. I'll bet that house boat dips and sways quite alarmingly in the height of stormy weather, but it could be sheltered enough.
So, just to be clear, this looks like a lovely idea but I would NOT recommend you run out to try it without looking into all the DOWNSIDES to living in a boat/on water in a place like Toronto, Canada where we have 4 full seasons of varied weather to live through in a year... I recommend you try renting out a place like this FIRST, and do so through inclement weather months, to see if it suits you in truth.
Where do you put it in the winter when the water freezes?
I love TO! 😍
