JHS MXR and Rat were all the better tones JHS wins for my taste fat and driven like a triple tracked Page tone. Perfect for a rock beat, and you did the demo the right way against a band and how it fits in the mix.
Hi gain: Angry Charlie and Badass. The Acapulco is choking on the lows, the Rat sounds like the Badass, the DS1 strangely enough sounds like a metal distortion. The rest are weak overdrives. The Angry Charlie and Badass are crying for a Dimarzio X2N! Thank you, great professional effort!
True I got the Carbon Copy deluxe as my new amp cooks digital pedals in the effects loop. So my Space echo is off my board. The Bucket brigade chips are awesome. Got a Phase 90
Great review of great pedals, thanks Leo. I still think I would go with the JHS Angry Charly. It nails the Rat tone, but it sits even a tiny bit better in the mix.
For transparency and not squashing great guitar tone, the BB takes the prize across all the gain test. Angry Charlie is a strong 2nd, Revv G2 was a pleasant surprise at 3rd and OCD holds its own at 4th. I'd take either the BB or the Angry Charlie but it seems like the BB would take lead tones more smoothly and hold up in the mix better (without fizz).
Easily the JHS & OCD- -- The BB 3Rd but has different gain structure, would be cool if you added in the Friedman BE-OD but I'm sure you working with what you have , great video thanks!
Each pedal is a different tool for a different job, so I cannot say one is really better than the others. I find it amazing that the Boss is still very useful after so many years. I can also see why Revv is popular, and it will probably shine even brighter in your upcoming part 2 driven amp test. Kudos to Acapulco, and we all love OCD. This is a very well crafted series of tests, and as always your videos are outstandingly detailed to leave no doubt to us viewers. Thank you again.
Thank you, I'm really happy that you appreciate the format!!! Yes, I'm also curious to hear the pedals with the Plexi...and I also think that the REVV is gonna perform better.. Thank you once more!!!
Great video once again and thank you so much for the giveaway! I'll drop you an email today. Rev or RAT are at the top of my list. Keep up the great work and I'm very happy for you and the continued success of your channel. God bless and Merry Christmas 🎄👍🎸
I use the OCD in my band, but after watching a recent video of a performance decided that while it’s great for overdrive, chunky chords and rhythmic palm muting, it is too soft and loose for my taste when I need actual distortion. So I’ve been looking for something tighter and more clear/focused. This video was the PERFECT platform for comparing. After listening several times, here are my thoughts. The DS-1 is the clear winner for my distortion needs in cutting through the mix cleanly and distinctly but still being organic and chunky like the OCD. As far as overdrive, I would say the JHS and BB have a more instantly appealing and distinct sound than the OCD, but for the same reasons make them less neutral, which is not good or bad, just personal taste. The BB also sounds cheaper and thinner than the OCD, albeit more instantly appealing. The REVV does a better job than the OCD for what I use it for because it has more bite and clarity but also is $100 more. And I still feel like OCD is slightly more organic and natural. Lastly, I’ve always wanted to like the RAT, and I think I would like it in person, but in this comparison, it sounded slightly synthetic when played side by side with the others. Again, not good or bad, but my taste is more organic. Thanks for the awesome video!
Another excelent video! Overhall i prefer the JHS and the one i liked less was the Acapulco. At low gain, the Boss and the Ratt sounded very good. Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹🎄
Thanks Leo! I found it funny that the ones I liked seemed to be the lowest in volume in the 3rd test. I like the BB, the Boss at 9 and the ProCo at 3. Very interested to see how these perform in your next test. Keep up the great work and thanks for these videos!
As always, thank you for the hard work, you always make very informative vids. Just in case you do another video of this type, please include Suhr, Maxon and Bogner pedals. Grazie Mille! 🙏
Whoah, wat pedal gave you that killer lead tone between the transition from the hi-gain to low-gain!? I’ve been trying to make a killer lead tone using a Truetone jekyll and Hyde but all I seem to get is a fuzzy tone washed away by the buzz of having both a distortion and an overdrive pedal cranked up
The mxr, ds1, jhs and the rat cut through the mix very well. However the ds1 sounded very fizzy and the jhs needed more treble and less bass. The Acapulco gold surprised me though, considering the only real setting is volume, i think worked best at 12 oclock.
All the pedals sounded good at different settings. I think how useful each pedal is and how good it sounds is so highly dependent on pickups, amp, tone controls, etc., that is really hard to say if one is better than the other. My favorites were the Acapulco, and the Rat. I have a Boss DF-2, and old Rat, but the favorite by far is my SansAmp GT2. It is so versatile, and the sounds I can get out of it are awesome. I run my guitar into my pedals, and those into my Modelers. I listen with monitoring headphones. Thanks for the interesting comparison.
@@LeoGibsonGtr I've been "cloning" my pedals into the HX Stomp, and was able to dial in my favorite SansAmp distortion tone using the "Fulltone OCD" on the Stomp.
Yes, it would be interesting... but unfortunately I have only the G2 and I think that in the part 2 of this video using a Marshall on the edge of the break up it could shine...maybe I will get the others in the future. Thank you for your suggestion!

I think that Revv,ds-1 and acapulco didn't sound good into a clean amp. I bet they will do better into edge of breakup Marshall. However,Acapulco is IMO too gainy or need to decrease volume=output voltage level to work better with amp. Xotic BB was quite a nice surprise for me. I think it sounded very good even with lower gain setting.

That Acapulco sure has a hot output. Rat sounded most natural to me. Let's hope we all can get a haircut soon again. :p

I would have liked to hear the REVV G3 or G4 with that first riff. The G2 is better at lower gain, and that riff was pretty heavy.
