In March 1999, Dusty was scheduled to go to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for "services to popular music". Due to the recurrence of her breast cancer, officials of Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for the medal to be collected earlier, in January, and it was presented to Springfield in hospital with a small group of friends and relatives attending. She died on the day that she would otherwise have collected her award from the Palace.
Dusty is one of my favourite of the British lady singers, of the 1960's/1970's which includes Petula Clarke, Lulu. Sandy Shaw, Julie Rogers and Cilla Black. Bring back such special memories of my early primary school to early high school years. This is coming from a Caribbean fan😊
Dusty Springfield had an amazing voice. She rose to fame in the 60s with hits like "I Only Want to Be With You", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Wishin' and Hopin'". She wasn't as successful in the 1970s. In 1987 she shot back up the charts with her collaboration with Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" which revitalized her career. It's a song you should check out. Unfortunately she left us in 1999 at the age of just 59. RIP Dusty.
I’m 76 British, for some reason this has brought tears to my eyes, nostalgia possibly, but she was absolutely wonderful, a real British icon. By the way I love you two, if I’m feeling bleak about all the horrors in the world, I go to one of your reactions. I’m reminded there is some good in the world. Keep the faith you two.
Aretha Franklin, shortly after hearing Dusty's version of "Son of a Preacher Man," ran into her at the Atlantic Records offices. It's reported Aretha put her hand on Dusty's shoulder and just said "GIRL!" That should tell you what the Queen of Soul thought of Dusty.
The Bay City Rollers version of " I Only Wanna Be With You" was better and a much bigger hit.... just as "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" was far bigger and much better by Elvis! Poor Dusty kept getting outdone.
Dusty Springfield would pluck words out the air as she sung, watch a video of her performance. She was a stunning vocalist, but took it a step further in her delivery. She introduced Motow to Britain, and refused to play to segregated audiences in Apartheid South Africa. Speak her name for a blessing.
Also, when she went to the States and was told she couldn't be on tv with the black singers she admired so much, she headed back to the airport. They gave in. She wasn't taking any of that racist shit.
I was very young at the time and did not realise the quality that was being provided to us on UK tv by these stars. I certainly realise now what a powerful singer Dusty was.
Dusty still is my all time favourite female singer from the sixties. However please check out Shirley Bassey singing The Living Tree live at Royal Variety. It's on you tube and it really is a performance no one should miss. Even more amazing is that she was well into her sixties when she performed it.
Not one of the finest but THE finest female vocalist ever from the UK!! You guys have to do her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on "What Have I Done to Deserve This" !!
This was one of the most dramatic and atmospheric Songs to come out of the 60s. It started out as an Italian Song - believe it or not! This was originally an Italian song, ("Lo che non vivo (senza te)--"I, who can't live (without you)" and was performed (in Italian) at a 1965 festival Dusty was at. She soon decided to do an English version, which resulted in this classic.
Before going solo, Dusty was in a folk group with her brother called The Springfields. Check out their song, "The Green Leaves of Summer." Vocal masterpiece! 💯👍
This was, first, an Italian song, "Io che non vivo (senza te)" by Pino Donaggi. When Dusty heard the original debuted at the Sanremo Festival, she knew she had to cover it. And boy! Did she cover it! She's all over it, and she owns it. Majestic performance from a truly brilliant vocalist.
Dusty heard the original Italian at a Italian music festival and was reportedly moved to tears despite not understanding Italian. She asked a music producer to write an English language version. That producer and another friend wrote the verses in an hour before a night on the town and the chorus in the cab on the way there. Dusty recorded her vocals the next day but wasn't happy with the acoustics of the studio so she recorded it in a stairwell. She wasn't happy with her vocals until 47 takes!
Jan., 1969, I met a young woman while I was on R&R in Sydney, Australia. We hit it off. Before I returned to the states, I managed to get a 1 week leave (Mar., 1969) to return to Sydney & stay with her family. While in Sydney, Dusty Springfield was performing at a cabaret & we went to see her. It was a very special night during my Viet. experience.
Dusty!!! She was so awesome, powerful, sultry, I get goosebumps hearing her sing. This was one of her best. OTHERS TO CHECK OUT: The Look Of Love, All I See Is You, I Only Want To Be With You, Wishin' And Hopin'. She is an absolute giant, one of the VERY BEST singers ever, period. THANKS for doing this!!!

Her personal back story was not one the 60s and 70s wanted to hear and she was incredibly shy but she persevered and is undoubtedly at the top of any British post ww2 singer list. You need to see her preform this on video (live) to fully appreciate her talent and persona she used to ensure she was a winner. No one did eyelashes like Dusty or the beehive!
Dusty is amazing ❤ my favourite old track is ( I close my eyes and count to ten ) but my ultimate favourite is one of her later songs with the pet shop boys ( Nothing has been Proved ) from the film/TV adaptation of Scandal the profumo affair ❤❤❤❤
Dusty was the best British female singer of her generation. She was gifted with a voice that lasted her whole life. She could sing anything. Her promotion of black music in the UK was legendary. I do think the UK didn't always appreciate her. If your new to Dusty then go buy her Dusty in Memphis Album
Dusty introduced the Motown music to the U.K. she loved soul music so much she even refused to perform to segregated audiences in South Africa resulting being thrown out of that country her passing was a great loss to music
Dusty is one of my all time favorite singers and this is my favorite of hers. The power and emotion in the vocals is superior. I've seen other talented singers sing it but they just didn't have the emotion in their voice to pull it off like Dusty. I won't limit Dusty to a list of best female singers from the 60s. As far songs from her you haven't checked out yet: "Give Me Time", "Little By Little" "Stay Awhile", "The Look of Love", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Breakfast in Bed", "Have a Good Life Baby", "The Windmills of Your Mind", "I Can't Make it Alone", and "Just a Little Lovin'".
Great reaction video, Jay and Amber! My favorite Dusty song is with the Pet Shop Boys from 1988: “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” I believe that it was her final hit before she died and it’s went all the way up to number two on billboard and has a great video.

Check out Dusty's No. 6 hit from 1964 called "Wishin' and Hopin' " and her No. 2 hit from 1987 called "What Have I Done to Deserve This?," a duet with the Pet Shop Boys.
You just need to hear Dusty in the 80s when she was featured by Pet Shop Boys in What Have I Done to Deserve this? Neil Tennant, who was the lead singer for PSB had loved Dusty as a teen, and always wanted to record with her. By the 80s, she was totally down and out, no career, I think drug problems, and by putting her in a PSB song revived her career. Then the week when she was to be inducted in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in the late 90s, she died a few days prior to induction.
The "dramatic" sound was known known as "The Wall Of Sound"- by Phil Spector( Ronnie Spector's husband. Ronnie was the lead singer in the Ronettes and THE "Ronnie" from Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight". You can see her do this live from a youtube black & white video. - with full orchestra on stage!!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank you both!!!
I have a feeling Ivor Raymonde (with the Philip's in house orchestra) might just have beaten him to it. Not sure what the original of this one sounded like , I think it was a French singer and english words were adapted to the tune. (oh apparently Italian - there are some good Naples songs in the San Remo song contests early 1960s and similar ).
Just love everything Dusty sang. Another teen age crush. And how could ya not love her! So fluid with her delivery! Thanks. Great reaction! The Shangri Las might be worth re-visiting especially since the lead singer Mary Weiss recently passed. "Walking In The Sand" is great by them. Thanks again.
It was originally written, and performed, in Italian. That version was in a movie (starring Claudia Cardinale) in '65. Dusty did her version the next year, and it was a big hit for her. Elvis sang it a few years later, and had a hit with it too.
Flashback to being a kid here with my palm sized a.m. transistor radio, which most of us kids carried around. All those 60s tunes pouring out non-stop from that tiny speaker. Sooo good. Another super soulful blonde haired lady you should give a shot too is Bonnie Bramlett from the duo Delaney & Bonnie. She and Leon Russell Road an amazing song that the Carpenters had a hit with. It's called Groupie (Superstar) but the Carpenters called it simply Superstar. Delaney is one soulful lady.

Interesting that Jay referred to part of the song as spooky, as Spooky would be the next song from Dusty that I would listen to,
She had so many good songs. This is my favorite.
This took me right back to my childhood. I truly do remember this.
Love this classic! One of the best to ever do it. Such a powerful, rich voice!
Mother Earth with Tracy Nelson, Down so Low, 1968 studio version. Goosebumps!
Back when voices were real and not enhanced by computers. Great song
I love how dramatic this song is from the start. Her voice is everything.
You are so right Amber, Dusty was one of the top female vocalists of her time, and she made some timeless music.
'I Close My Eyes and Count To 10' is in the same vein. Especially the piano.
Suggestion…Barbara Mason…Are You Ready! Very popular song in the 60’s, she wrote it at just 15 yrs old.👍🌸🌸
Barbara Mason, Yes, I’m ready.
The Look of Love was one of her most popular songs. It is my favorite. It is so sultry , loving and beautiful. It's orgasmic!
It was originally written, and performed, in Italian. That version was in a movie (starring Claudia Cardinale) in '65. Dusty did her version the next year, and it was a big hit for her. Elvis sang it a few years later, and had a hit with it too.
Yes, written and sung by Pino Donaggio, later he switched to scoring movies like many of Brian De Palma's biggest hits.
Dusty's voice is so beautiful.
Dusty. One of the very best ever. Singing with emotion and feeling. You can’t do that with a computer.
