My left foot was shattered and shredded in a bombing and my right foot was blown off. The only shoes I've ever been able to wear were skater shoes and New Balance extra wide. They stopped making the one pair that works for me. Trying on shoes is an awful procedure. I've tried 28 pairs on amazon prime wardrobe during the pandemic and no luck. I committed to a pair and they're so painful now. I do crossfit and am active and this shoe situation is becoming a huge hindrance to my well-being. I'm buying this pair right now based on your recommendation! I so hope they work! The part at the end where you talk about injury was such a kicker for me. I really appreciate the comprehensive review. I've never listened to show reviews before since my situation is so unique but this was really informative.

Excellent review. Great to hear someone who really understands running and running shoes. I have Morton's neuroma and at some point couldn't even walk, but Paradigm 4.5's saved me and I've been back, running as before. Still a bit nervous about the width of the new 5's but after hearing Steve's review, will give them a chance. Thank you!

Definitely like the look of these. I've got Clifton 7s but judging by the tread wear all being on the outside of the shoes, I think I supinate a fair bit. I've also suffered with IT band and shin splints in the past. I think something like this would help me a great deal.

I'm about to buy my fourth pair of Paradigms. I love 'em. I have wide feet so I size up 1/2 size. Fits perfectly. Same with their Cayd casual shoe. Not true of their other models.

These shoes killed my feet. The middle had a pressure up on my feet which killed the nerves in my feet. Had to return them. I liked them better than the Paradigm 6, because the 6 was too soft and not supportive enough, but the 5 was more supportive, but that hump in the middle of the shoe....what was it?? OUCH! I have flat feet too. The arch built into it I cannot handle, and don't want that in my shoes at all.

I just bought these today. Its too early to tell the comfort and stability long-term. I have plantar fasciitis with flat feet. I have lots of trouble finding the right shoes. I tried the Hoka Bondi 7 they are nice and plush more than this Altra but for long distance running and walking my feet got tired and achy because the Hoka's are too heavy. Plus the Hoka Bondi 7 is not a stability shoe. Only time will tell on how the Altra's work out for me. I also tried Brooks Adrenaline GTS 20, Hoka Gaviota 2, Asics Gel Kayano 27, Saucony Guide, New Balance Fresh Foam, Books Beast 20. I need a wide shoe even though the Asics and the Hoka Bondi 7 were wide size shoe it still felt like I did not have enough room in the midsection of the shoe where feet are thr widest.
The Altra's and Hoka Gaviota by fat feel the most comfortable the Brooks Beast comes close in 3rd place. Hope this review was helpful each person has different needs for footwear you may have to try on 10 or even 20 pairs od shoes to find the right fit, comfort and stability.

The Bondi is too heavy? Have you weighed the Paradigm 5? I have and it turned out to be the heaviest shoe I've ever held in my hands. Altra claims 318 g for M size 10,5 and mine was M size 10, but it weighed a ridiculous 352 g! What a behemoth shoe! I returned them to the shop, as that weight went way over any trail running shoe I know. For comparison, my Bondi (width D) weighs 320 g.

Great review. What is the road equivalent to the Olympus? This or the Duo? I tried on the Duo but they just felt like duck shoes. Tried Torins also and they felt sloppy as well. I tried previous Paradigm and liked the fit but I don't need stability guide rail. I've actually been road running in my Olympus 3's which I stocked up on. I feel the Olympus has great energy return for such a cushioned shoe and the forefoot rocker is a godsend for my bad big toe. Does this Paradigm have the forefoot rocker?

I hope the rubber is a harder grade
As I have the 4.0 and 4.5 and the rubber wore out after a couple weeks on that outer lateral “stability pod” on both feet!
Which is a shame as they feel great up to that point.
I would of liked the 5.0 to get more rubber tread like how the Escalante 2 did over the 1/1.5 escalante

Gotta try these! I have high arches, so I have always thought that I needed an "anti-support" shoe, if that makes any sense. Or a support shoe for supinators/under pronators. So hoping the guide rail on the outside of the show will help me. I mean that by needing a shoe that keeps my feet from rolling outward too much so that my foot is off of the sole/platform.

  • @undeadly1103

i have always had issues with altras causing heel blisters. only exceptions are the escalante and lone peak 4.5 because they have no rigid heel cup. the torin 3.5 most notably was just fabric over plastic and actually left my heel bloody. the escalante is a bit too flimsy tho. the lone peak is just awesome. can you add heel cup padding and/or heel blister probability to your reviews? most people don't even touch on this subject. i don't have anywhere to try on altras so i have to rely on reviews for them. thanks! good reviews!

@@karenmullis9339 i haven't tried the 5 unfortunately. the only Altras i have found that don't rub are ones without a rigid heel cup. the Escalante line, Lone Peak 4 & 4.5 as examples. others have suggested Injinji toe sock liners and Darn Tough running socks to combat the heel blisters. sizing is also very important. i always have to go a 1/2 size down in Altras. others say they size up so who knows lol good luck

After four runs I don't even have to ice anymore and recover better. Thank you for your video! How would you evaluate the new 5 vs the old 4.5? the 5 seem to have a wider plastic band at the forefoot, I'm afraid the big toe might hit it more than with the 4.5 which seemed more "meshy"? (I don't have a pair of 4.5, I'm weighing which version should I buy :) )
As for the size, I have a pair of Escalante 2 @9.5 which are perfect, but I had to return a new pair of Superior 4.5 always @9.5 because they're too tight and short (my toe is at 0,5cm from the front). What size would you suggest for the Paradigm 5?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  3 роки тому

Hi Bill, Altra Paradigm 5s will have a max cushion level comparable to that of a Hoka, making them good for being on your feet often. Obviously, we cannot give medical advice, but it is possible that a flat shoe like the Paradigm could take some pressure off your upper foot when compared to a shoe with a higher heel-to-toe drop like a Hoka.

I really like your enthusiasm for this shoe. Altra is not widely sold in the UK and it’s hard to try before you buy. I’ve previously run in the Altra Duo (size 12UK). I liked the zero drop but the upper started tearing. I replaced the shoes with Hoka One One Clifton 6 (12.5UK) but I haven’t been totally happy. I think it’s too narrow for me as I have the Hoka One One Hupana Flow in wide and I love them, they are very quick. But as a heavy runner (100 kg) with medium low arch and maybe slight pronation on one foot I was thinking of getting the Altra Paradigm 5. I also have had trapped nerve in the back and am trying to get back to running three times a week (low mileage). Do you think this is the right way to go. The other shoes that I’ve been researching are the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 21 and Hoka One One Arahi 5 (this looks very promising).

Update: Due to limited stock (in the UK) and limited colour options I decided on the black Paradigm 4.5. I know the Paradigm 5 is a superior shoe but I had a good price on the black 4.5 shoe and I figured if it didn’t work out I could use them as an everyday walking shoe. If the black/grey 5s were available I probably would have paid more and got them. So far I’m very happy. I do low mileage and after 30km I feel that they are working for me. I don’t feel the guide rails, but I have a fairly neutral running style. But I do feel the stability pods. I think I roll out pronating. Overall, I’m pleased to have gone back to Altra and want to increase my mileage. I’ll probably upgrade to the 5 when I’ve done about 400km and use the 4.5 as a everyday trainer. Thank you for the reviews. They are most helpful.

I have been in the Paradigm 4.5 for the past year or so and really like it...except the red wedge on the lateral side of the shoe puts a little too much pressure on that part of my foot and the heel lock-down is a bit loose. Have those issues been improved in the new shoe?

I'm on my feet all day. 10,000+ steps per day, moving around 1000 pounds in 40-pound increments throughout the day. I'm also overweight (working on that) and have well-controlled lymphedema. I have anatomically flat feet, and since starting this job, I have been struggling with pretty bad plantar fasciitis which I believe is most likely the cause of some pretty awful lower back, hip, and thigh pain (that hasn't been evaluated by a specialist yet due to the pandemic). Without having any idea what I was doing, I've tried wearing a weird variety of shoes: Asics Gel Contend 4, Timberland Pro Powertrain Sport, and Dasnko Paisley shoes all to no avail. I've got to find something to keep me on my feet. I'm currently considering the Paradigm 4.5 and Hoka Gaviota 2. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I work 12 hour days, all on my feet. I also have to go up 3 flights of stIr constantly. I've tried hundreds of shoes. I recently bought the Altra torin plush 3.5. I wore it to work and was impressed. I also ran 8 miles and it felt fantastic. I'm slowly incorporating the shoes in so I don't injury myself. I will say my calves were a bit tight while running and it felt like my legs were tired. The only thing is the shoen is a bit wide for my foot and I want more traction. I decided to switch to zero drop shoes b/c my knee has been bothering me while running. I also bought the timp 2 and the Olympus 3.5. The Olympus feels super plush and stable. I'll be wearing them Olympus tonight at work. I also suggest you get a good insole with decent arch support that will help alot
