    For more info about the Torin Plush, I compare it to the New Escalante 2.5 in one of our latest Altra reviews here: ua-cam.com/video/fUx4UWBf0Qg/v-deo.html (around the 5 min mark :) )

    The weight loss on the new one comes from shortening the laces 😂

      We love the 4.0. Always risky making a shoe a two-year run in case it’s a dud. We’re perfectly happy having the torin 4.0 available for another year.

      Great news, I recently bought my first pair of 4.0s on sale, I thought they were going out. They are for me my favorite of all shoes I have run in. I don't think I'd really need any other road shoe then the Torin 4.0, they are fast enough for a slow guy like me, they almost feel faster then my Escalante racer in a way as I feel I get more energy return while the racers are firmer and don't compress and spring back as much. And they almost feel more cushioned then my Paradigm 4.0s yet again because the Paradigms feel firmer and don't really compress that much. All in all a great shoe for me, only minor thing is their fit is a little on the snug side for me and I have had some mortons neuroma like sensations in my trouble foot, but that might also be sciatica as that have been an issue lately.

    I was on the verge of ordering some Topos until I watched your review. You addressed every problem I experience. I have the Altra Paradigm 4.5 and while they are great shoes, I think the extra stability enhancements from the guide rail and that little red hard wedge on the lateral edge of the sole are causing some discomfort on the lateral part of my feet. I also have a pair of Hoka Bondi 6 shoes that are great everywhere except for the cramped toe box. Thanks for the great review and explanation of the shoes qualities.

      The Topo's saved me when the Escalante 1.0 caused me to get a Morton's Neuroma and then the Paradigm didn't help; after 100 miles they hurt me too. Topos have never let me down. That said, my current go-to road shoe is the Torin 4.
      Coincidentally, my first run in the Torin 4 was the same day this video came out and less than a month later I've got just under 200 miles on them. Mr. Moore is correct: it seems Altra may have finally got their sizing fixed and I may be mistaken but the toe-box is also a little smaller, which is great because Altra had a tendency to overdo it; now it's plenty spacious but not overly so. I LOVE the sock liner as it allows a nice snug fit around the midfoot without the need to over-tighten the laces, which I believe was my problem with the Escalante. This is my go-to shoe for the road when I'm going 10+ miles. I'm very interested in trying the Plush 4.5 and recommend you give it a try.

    Hey Steve, thanks for your extensive reviews. Well, you were spot on with your Escalante 2.5 review, as in Altra did listen to feedback and make the top of the shoe less constrictive; I could not wear the 2.0s. However, regarding the tightness on top of the shoe, I have to disagree that Altra made the same requested adjustments on the Torin Plush 4.5. I was looking for something with even more cushioning since I recently developed tibialis posterior tendonitis (like plantar fascitis, but inflammation of a tendon instead of a ligament). I literally could not even get my foot into the shoe it was so constrictive. I'd caution your customers who are sensitive about upper shoe tightness and too narrow shoes about this one. I'm not sure why Altra keeps making models that elicit the same complaints from so many customers. But I appreciate the tip about the Escalante 2.5s -- they've been a lifesaver.

    • @goo5976
      @goo5976 4 роки тому

      @@Crepitom the toe box is significantly wider, which is insane to me, while also being much more stable and the overall comfort and stability of the upper and the midsole of the shoe is much much thicker and provides long lasting comfort on long runs. id say the escalante is made for very fast long distance runners and sprinters who are under 180lbs and the the torin is made for someone who prioritizes both comfort and speed. i noticed no difference in speed in my torins so making the escalante less comfortable just seems pointless

    Nice review on the Torin Plush. I currently use the Torin 4.0 in my rotation of running shoes, but I’d really like to try the Plush version. I know that the Brooks Glycerin 18 has increased the heal & ankle collar with more padding over the ‘17’ version, therefore increasing the retention of heat during long runs, so that is one of the main reasons I hesitate to upgrade from my favorite ‘17’ to the ‘18’. So the same concern from my Torin 4.0 to the Plush, but I also love the cushiness of these. So more food for thought for getting the Torin Plush. I’m usually willing to try new fittings & versions of my current favorites.

    • @RunMoore

    Would the Torin 4.5 Plush be good for a 61 year old former football lineman-cum-Crossfitter who is a heavy foot runner? I’m down to 208lbs these days and top 200 in world, but running is my Achilles heel. I will never do more than 5 miles at a time. Was thinking about one of the shoes with a carbon plate to help with energy conservation (new ASICS Metaracer) to add fun to run. I have a wide foot and love Altra’s as a result. Any advice much appreciated. Thank you for the thoughtful review.

    I've got a hot foot. How's the breathability on this year's plush model? I haven't had a great experience with the paradigm 4.0's mainly because that arch area didn't breath well for me ultimately giving me bad chafing, and I'm hoping breathability wise the 4.5 plush will be comparable to the Escalante 1.5 or even the Torin 4.0 mesh. What do you think? As breathable as those two models?

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +2

      Probably closer to the standard Torin 4 than the Escalante. Our shop manager ran a ton in the Escalante 1.5 and she felt that was a hot shoe for her and not so much with the Torin 4. I did not like the lack of breathability in the Plush 4 but this seems to be a little better there.

    Tried Altra Provision previously, suffered from shin splints while in the shoe. It was thought the shin splints resulted from the zero drop platform. Have you seen this to be the case when trying to transition to zero drop? Thanks love your reviews!

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +5

      We actually like trying folks in zero drop options with shin splints. Sometimes shin splints are from over striding and whacking the heel too much so the low drop can encourage a midfoot landing and help with the impact. Not always the case but we like to try that as an option and we have had good luck. There are always a lot of other causes for shin splints like big changes to the training routine, structure of the shoe or even the terrain you are running. There are also those who just don't take to the zero drop and it changes their form too much and that can cause some issues like shin splits. Short answer is we like pulling Altras for shin splints but it's not necessarily a one shoe helps/causes any particular injury in my opinion.

    Switching to Altra for the first time and just received the Escalante 2.5 and the Torin 4.5 Plush.
    The Escalante seems to fit perfectly and feels very comfortable, and the Torin Plush does not fit at all. There somehow seems to be both excess material on the inside, along the big toe while it's also extremely tight around the foot just behind the toes, so the widest point across the foot. The space is there, it's just that the foot is not in the right part of the shoe to use that space it seems - but the length of the shoe is correct. If I tried a smaller size to put my foot into that space, my toes would be hitting the front of the shoe. It just seems like the shape of this shoe is just slightly off.

    new subscriber!
    I purchased a pair of the torin plush 4.0 and noticed an uncomfortable pressure in the forefront of the shoe created by the webbing under the lacing. It created pressure and made the shoes unwearable for an extendeed length of time. There are several comments on the Altra site attesting to this issue. Do you know if Altra has addressed it for the 4.5? thanks

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the subscription! There is no webbing on this 4.5. It's gone and it's not a big padded tongue on this model so this may help add some depth to the shoe if that extra add on stuff was bugging you.

    You mentioned the guide rail and the higher arch. I am wearing the torin 4.0 regular presently, and they have essentially no arch, which is what I need. I have "collapsing arches", great fun there, so a stiff arch means 1.5 inch blisters in my arches. So is this a major difference from the 4.0 regulars ? This is for ultra distances, so regular long runs of 20+.

I understand that zero-low drop is best for this type or running. I also have been having a sensitive meniscus and i thought some cushioning would alleviate the stress there. UPDATE: I got my pair of Torin 4.5 Plush shoes today and I am pretty disappointed. They are the proper size but they are much too snug overall with very little cushion in the sole. My Paradigm 4.5s have a much softer feel and have a more comfortable toebox. I still experienced the same pressure on the lateral side of my left foot but also felt a lot more pressure along the entire length of my foot from heel to toe especially in the arches. There was so much pressure in the left arch it almost felt like I was getting a cramp. I walked 1.5 miles and then switched back to the Paradigm 4.5s for an accurate comparison and it was a huge improvement when I changed shoes. In fact, I have a pair of Altra Graftons that were more comfortable right out of the box. they have a very low stack height and are more of a trail shoe but are still more comfortable. I read the recent reviews at the Altra site and one reviewer said it took about 6 miles for the knit on his to stretch to the point it started feeling comfortable around his toes. I'm not sure the rest of my feet would survive that long.
    Even though Altra offers a 30 day no questions asked return policy if you buy directly from them, I would certainly recommend only buying these from a qualified shoe store, such as Lets Run More, to make sure you are getting the proper fit and the shoe experience you desire before walking out of the store.

    Does it stretch like the escalante on top? And does it stretch more than the new paradigm 4.5?

      It's got some give but not as much as the older Escalante 1 or 1.5's. I would say it's probably in line with the Paradigm stretch. I think it's got some give, more than last Plush for sure, but not so much that if you feel super snug out of the box you'll stretch it out.

    How are you guys finding the midsole durability these days? I found with the earlier Altras that they would flatten out "really" quickly. I'm 6 3" and 190lbs so not on the light side!

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +1

      Sizing and durability have always been the bugaboo for Altra (and a few other brands specifically one that rhymes with Moka). I will say since our early days with Altra things seems to last longer. Someone actually commented on here they have a friend who hit 1000 on the Torin 4. My Timp 1.5's are my favorite trail shoe. My current pair have hundreds of miles on it and going strong. A lot of time the combo of the right shoe for right body type is key. At your size, something like the Plush should give you a better chance for longer and happier miles than say the Provision.

    Escalante 1/1.5 - Mens Size 12
    Escalante Racer - Mens 11.5

    Could you comment if i should go with a mens size 12 in these?

    • @rusty3831
      @rusty3831 4 роки тому +1

      jlamn - I normally wear a size 10 in most running shoes, however, when I went & actually tried the Torin 4, I needed to go up 1/2 size to 10.5. Just know that the sizes indicated on the shoe boxes are a constantly moving target; no two brands are exactly the same. This is why it’s so important to go to your local running shoe store (not big box store) and let them fit you properly. You should have between 1/2 thumbnail to full thumbnail distance between your longest toe and the inside edge of the end of the shoe. If your toe(s) literally touches the end of the shoe inside, you have too small of shoe on and no room to let your feet swell during running or walking. Hope this helps.

      @@rusty3831 thanks for the response! So does the torin 4 sizing run the same as the 4.5 plush? I tried the torin 4 non plush version in a size 13 and it was too big. I understand if it's difficult to answer.

    • @rusty3831
      @rusty3831 4 роки тому

      jlamn - I would think they would be the same considering the ‘Plush’ is just that. However, I could be wrong. My local running store only sells the Torin 4.0 and no Torin Plush.

    • @mattgraham2639
      @mattgraham2639 4 роки тому

      I have a size 9.5 in Escalante 1, 1.5 and Torin 4. I really should have got a 10 in the Torin 4 because there is not enough movement around the toe box. When Altra put strips of rubber as a toe guard in the upper I will always get a 10. The Torin 4.5 looks like a beefed up Escalante which I’m super keen to get my hands on. A 9.5 might be ok because of the upper

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +1

      I have found the Torin and Torin Plush and Plush 4.5 to be cut similar in length. The new Escalante 2 is cut long for a lot of people and I believe the Racer is based off the Escalante 2.0 model so it would make sense that you sized down in the racer. If you are regularly a 12 in most running shoes, I would recommend a 12 in the Plush 4.5. Hope this helps.

    • @RunMoore
      @RunMoore  4 роки тому +1

      Technically this shoe can be used for a flat footed person if they tend to not overpronate. If you are a typical flat footed runner who requires support than this may not provide enough structure. It's a neutral shoe so whatever you are naturally doing pronation-wise this won't adjust it.

    99% awesome shoes, but the 1% makes it unwearable for long runs. THe bottom of the shoelace overlay where it meets the toe box creases downwards when shoe flexes on toe off. Every step I take the crease bends downwards and rubs on the top of my feet. It is annoying and will create a blister. Wanted to love this shoes for my next marathon.
