  • ABS Module Repair: 2 to 3 hours ($15 / $600 / $1,200 / $3,200)
WARNING: Be sure to top off the brake fluid reservoir and bleed the brakes after the repair. Also check for leaks where you disconnected the brake lines.
In this video I repair the ABS module on a 2003 Jaguar XJ8. The car had the ABS warning light in the dash along with the Tracks Not Available, and ASC Not Available warnings. It took about 2 hours but you may be able to do it quicker. This process will work on many other Jaguar models as well as other cars.

Thanks a bunch Robert! You're the man!!! I'm the original owner of a 1999 XJ8L. It is my daily work commute car. Been watching all your videos and that motivated me to do a lot of the repairs myself. ABS control module repair was way over due, 3+ years. Finally got the time to do it today. Worked like a charm. No more orange light and stability error message! I guess those solder joints worked their way to an open from all that vibration being in the engine compartment. Thanks to your video, only took 3 hours and I took my time.

Blimey Robert. You've shown great resourcefulness fixing this ABS unit. Saved to my favourites in case I need it in the future. A big plus for your determination.
PS: The second solder joints are good (The first try had a 'dry' joint)
From an ex telephone engineer with a lot of soldering experience.

    Hey Robert
I fix my own stuff when ever my painful spine will allow me. I have no money to give me options in that. I can tell you watching videos like yours help me a lot. I keep my old van running and sometimes buy vehicles people are too quick or lazy to deal with.
What a feeling it is to fix things other people say can't be done,...and being disabled, I need successes once in a while to keep from jumping off a bridge.
Doing these repairs don't only make the car feel better they make me feel better too.
    Thanks a lot

    Hi Robert,
Good video, I fixed my ABS unit mostly following your guide, except I carefully bent the brake lines coming out of the ABS unit to get enough clearance to get the module out (avoiding having to bleed the brakes). The relay bracket can also be bent out of the way after unclipping the relays.
Had to drill larger holes as my soldering gun is larger than the one you used, filled the resulting holes with some body rustproofing plugs I had.
    Thanks,
    Wayne

This works ! I used dremel cutting wheel instead of drill - much better access to the solder joints.
After inspection is seems the problem is too much current through the thin factory solder joints.
Make sure you make a good thick " bubble" of solder for a good connection and resistance to future
failure. Way to go ! Thanks !
PS - i bet this is a common problem for other abs units, just look for the joints behind the main power connector
just like this one. Good luck !

I have an 04 S Type r and it has the dynamic stability control warning light on, Jaguar wants almost $3000 just for that ABS part you repaired. Also, the modules are matched to the VIN so you can't just throw in a used one. There is a company in Idaho that repairs these modules, they charge $250 so im going to send mine there, but thanks for this vid of how to get the module out!

Well after doing my looking around I went and bought a Haynes manual book.. And I checked the relays and the relay to the pump didn't send any juice to the pump..?. A bad relay?.. I'm not sure?.. Theirs power leading to it but don't send power to the pump, the only way I was able to get power to the pump was hooking up a cable from ground to this cable on the relay... Purple/yellow wire and that made the coil on the relay to get together and send power to the pump... Now I'm waiting on a used relay from eBay to see if it's the relay?.... Or why by connecting ground to that specific wire I get juice to the pump???..

I have the same issue on a 2001 VDP. funny I still can register speed output at all 4 wheels when I have my autel reader connected but faced with the same issue of abs & traction control. the wires you solder appear to be main power source to board It must be inter-connected somehow but wheel sensors are from another positive feed & why I can register speed data at the wheels

Hey good news i took module off but drilled a 5/8 hole above the power feeds in cover. I was able to cold solder the 2 pins but wanted to point out there is a tiny capacitor that needed a little solder . I used a rubber plug to seal hole. Put it all back together Bob's your uncle!! No more ABS or traction control lights on. The only thing left to do is fill & bleed brakea since I disconnected the 4 lines to have better access !

Thanks Robert. I followed the other video where you cleaned the ABS sensor which did not work and then this one. This video seems much more complicated for a DYI mechanic like me so I am not sure I am up to the task. Do you think the Mitsubishi Outlander ES 2WD 2011 has the same complicated type of setup where the control module is hidden and difficult to get access to? Also, do you think the ABS control module is also sealed the same way that would require some "ingenious" way to reach the terminals to do the solder? Thank you!

Great vid Robert. I have 2001 Jaguar XJR Supercharged V8 and my lights came on the dash one evening after moving my car. When I got out of the car I notice a motor running and so I opened the hood and the ABS motor was running with the car off. So I found the switch and pulled up on it and it stopped running. I want to ask you do you think the motor is gone or it's those two solder points that need to be soldered??? The car is drivable with the plug pulled as the dealer told me. I have a 1998 jaguar XJR. I need to change the ABS box. I cannot get an E4 star socket onto the two bottom bolt heads on the unit as there is insufficient space between the ABS unit and a bulkhead. Is there a special tool for this or a shorter shank E4 star socket to fit to a bar or is there a combined tool that can be bought? But the middle where it shows the mileage randomly while I'm driving it will pop up saying asc not available trac not available and then transmission fault.. if I turn off my car and turn it back on it turns off and doesn't happen again for a while.. but then it will happen again same lights.. just randomly. It drives amazing until it randomly just glitches and it won't speed up as fast as before and those asc and traction and transmission lights come on. Do you have any tips or ideas on what it could be..

You need to have the car scanned by a Jag tech, preferably while the light is on.

I don't know. It's a long shot. Most of the time you have to open the unit and repair several points. It is probably best to find a refurbishing source to get a replacement. There are a couple of places that do it for Volvo cars for $75.

im in new zealand bro, parts are hard to find , and kiwis can do anything , so i will pull it out and check it out , cheers tho , my car will start then drive , no lights on dash , then if i turn it off and go into a shop or whatever, come back and it will then bring up the abs and e-brake lights, it does this 100% every time ,cleaned the sensors , and they were clean anyways , no change , so module next. keep up the vids man

Great video! Do you happen to know how difficult it is to actually pry the lid off from the ABS electronics module? How is it sealed exactly?
I suspect my '98 XJ8 has this problem, it was intermittent at first, and cleaning the wheel sensors did not work. Just seems like intermittent problems like that is a good indicator of a bad solder joint somewhere. But I'd like to see the whole board.
Thanks in advance, your videos of the XJ8 have been very helpful!

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  10 років тому

Mythricia I believe the guys cut them open with a drummel or something. I have read that some people screw the module on a board and use some miniature pry bar to force it open. When I opened one I butchered it up pretty bad. There is a guy at www.MidWest-ABS.com that repairs them for Volvo's. I'm pretty sure he could do the same for these.

guys clever, simply follow his instructions as I did and it fixed my 2001 xjr without having to pay the crazy £1500 estimate given to me by my jag main dealer, you can bet those robbers would only have done what this guy has shown us how to do for a few quid and an hours labour, and there lays the danger, you entrust your car to what you think are and you believe are honest trustworthy jaguar main agents who never tell you the abs units can be simply repaired cheaply and quickly you leave your car with them for a day or two they then call you to say your car is repaired and ready for collection you pay your crazy £1500 bill not realising nor ever suspecting your car had been left in a corner for nearly two days with you believing it has been worked on for those two days after they had probably carried out this same or similar fix an hour after you first dropped the car off, never judge a book by its cover or a jag main agents by its fancy showroom and workshops, thanks rob and if ever your in the uk inbox me as I owe you one.
