Spent an hour learning the first 15 seconds of this song. Solid
How it be huh
No worries brotha. I just spent 2.5 hours getting that section down.
That’s the Jimi Hendrix experience in a nutshell
Starting it rn after being afraid to touch it
Literally did the exact same thing today
I love it when one video lasts a day
I love it when one video lasts 2 weeks
Or 6 months but who’s counting
4 months so far
@@kendalortiz06 dam seriously
@@kendalortiz06 maybe practice some easier songs and work your way up....
Marty! I sat 15 feet away from Hendrix at a concert in New York many, many years ago. I was blown away. Now, you have revived those feelings in me! Keep up the good work!
I'm always surprised how simple a lot of Hendrix' stuff is. It's not the simplicity that made it cool, it's that no one ever took that approach before he did. Lots of bands (including the Beatles and the Stones) broke guitar playing up into three bits -- bass, rhythm, and lead. Hendrix simplified the rhythm part a bit, and found pentatonic shapes that fit the chords he was going for (mostly the "A" shape with a buried sus2 hammered up to a major chord - e.g. The Wind Cries Mary) so that he could embellish the rhythm to blur the line between rhythm and lead guitar. A lot of jazz players were doing something like this (Wes, Joe P., Barney, Herb), but rock & roll players weren't. And then Jimi added a shitload of distortion and a tremolo bar... no one played like that before him. He had to do it -- he didn't have a rhythm guitar player in the band, so he had to cover both.
You are right ,but i think everybody forget too easily Jimi's real roots : blues ,he was deep in the blues before all the other genres he played in the differents bands he played with along his way ,Robert Johnson plays bass and lead on his records ,perfectly enough to make Keith Richards says he has two brains ,as a bluesman Jimi was experienced enough to play rockn' roll with Little Richard ,rockn' roll is easy to play ,the blues is a big continent ,rockn'roll is a small country ...
He was a guy constantly working his instrument ,Mitch Mitchell said he was (of course)capable of playing real jazz ,prefectly ,even if that wasn't his cup of tee ,because he worked a lot ,as i said ,do someone remember a jazz band Jimi played in ?
To make it short Jimi didn't read the music ,Louis Armstrong either ,both enjoyed a lot improvisation ,Armstrong said he was able to do some music because he didn't knew solfege lol ,Jimi was a bit ashamed of it it seems so ,but as he was in the blues structure ,he was also free to reach even the classical music as he did ,he enjoyed classical music too ,let's go let's mix it with blues ..
In fact his fingers and feeling did all the job, naturaly ,effortlessly ,because of his talent ,work, and ears .....Blues classical music man ,no one never did that ,no one will ever reach that level ,the master.....Humble and gone too soon ...
are you on drugs?? jimis technique is insane on this one.. ive never heard anyone play it right , beside me.. jimi didnt simplify anything, he took everything to the next level.. everything that you said after, how simple jimis stuff was Blah, blah blah.. hes all over the fret board for his phrases which this one one of his most difficult pieces,, the positioning requires mastery of all digits and a level of dexterity that 99.9 guitar players cant touch.. Im in that .1 but im the exception.. so simple? think before you speak bc about Jimi.. He rarely played anything simple.. You seem like a nice guy but Jimis my boy and my job is to defend his music and make sure it gets respected.
@@sarcari Lol when you say beside you that is not too humble ,i remember SRV playing that a few seconds very comfortably ,and that's the beginning with the difficults Hendrix's songs, then you have to play little wing ,already more difficult ,and bold as love which is really realy difficult .....I think 100 % guitar players just can't embellish an A like Jimi did ,he could find at least 15 ways to turn around an A position or whatever ,if you play bold as love you going to find some ,if you play almost all little wing you going to find some others ,i'm absolutely not a Guitar specialist ,but i'm sure we wil be agree : Jimi had no limits musicaly .
@@sarcari We're all waiting for you to post of your own rendition Scotti : )
Jazz and gospel players did it before him ( e.g. Curtis Mayfield) but you’re right Jimi brought it to to pop music.
And mixed with stellar songwriting he had an impact on music that launched a rock movement that lasted for 30 years (rip rock)
imma come back when I'm good at guitar
Update: I just remembered this because someone posted "he quit" on the thread. I actually have an electric guitar now and have gotten pretty into Prog and Stoner/Doom, and I'd say I'm fairly good at guitar now. I'll have to give this a shot.
Update: I still haven't played this song yet, but I'm going to try to learn it this next week. I have a Fender Squire and decent Fender practice amp, but I've been playing mostly acoustic recently
We need an update Frankie boy!
Update!!
Yeah, what those dudes said!
eyo!!!! how is it going now
he quit
You emphasize the artist’s style and techniques in your lessons more than note for note accuracy. I find it more helpful especially because most songs were probably never played the same way twice. I over-rate my self as intermediate and always look for your videos when learning something new. Thanks Marty!
been playin for 7 months n thank to marty ive learned so much hendrix doors zeppelin. no stopping now, playing this and little wing you really see how jimi connected all of his songs, from the intro chords in this to a couple embelishments
I figured this out for the most part in the late 80's. I had been on the Appalachian Trail for several days and this was the first piece of music I heard when I came back. I cried like a baby and learned it. Thanks for filling in the gaps for me! Great Strat and tone also sir.
I’ve been trying to do this from tab and ear but your lesson makes it easier to visualise and with good explanations. Im starting to finally get it down now thanks!! Great player and great teacher.
Heart eyes for Marty and Hendrix. The Hendrix comes through Marty for sure.
I've always felt this song has some kind of magical, mystical quality to it. This is an absolutey fantastic tutorial - after about 30 mins I actually feel like I can get this under my fingers (will take me another week or two of practice but it's attainable) and the coolest part is I can feel the magic as I play it! Bravo Marty thanks so much for doing these. I feel like I've gotten Wind Cries Mary rhythm and solo pretty well down so was looking for my "next one". Even though this one's 7 years old it's EXACTLY what I need for where I am right now!
You are helping to make the world a better place by teaching people to play music. It takes work to learn how music . I feel you are helping people to focus on something more important than popularity or how much attention one can get. Learning music is good for people. You are helping people be better. Thank you
Love this, thanks so much, I will manage the intro, and the funky guitar shuffle, but its the pentatonic sequences off chords and "flourishes" that will have me beat.
I’ve been playing for 5 years now and I started off with all of Marty’s lessons and later got into the Grateful Dead and starting digging into that I’m still back after 5 years digging back into the Hendrix stuff shout out to Marty for making me the guitar player I am I’ve played lots of wedding gigs cause of him ❤
Marty! Your lessons have bettered my life and made me a better player so I can bring music to others and better their lives! Thank you!!
Thank you marty! Ive watched this video about 10 times over like 3 years to try and learn the intro, my dad used to play it to me when i was a kid, after many failed attempts i woke up today clicked on this trusty video and successfully played this heavenly lick! Maybe in another 3 years ill be able to play the rest of the song 😂 cheers
Thank you so much, just when I think I’ll never be able to learn a song I watch your videos and ALWAYS learn it…awesome teacher !
Great clear tones and clear and comprehensive lessons. Thanks Marty!
MORE HENDRIX
always Juan.
Dude, no matter what, your tone is always killer. Even if it's off of the tone used by the player, it doesn't matter 'cause it still sounds awesome! You're the best, Marty! Thanks so much for this lesson man, love this song.
Dude you are so great. I have really enjoyed how you break stuff down. Thanks man!!!
Couldn’t understand the tabs at all when it came to the quick hammer on /pull Offs (most jimi songs tbh) and this helped me get it very fast. Marty u the GOAT.
Marty, always starts of by thanking us.... bro i've been playing now for 3 years and you brought me at this level already. Thank you marty!
awesome summation of the key aspects!
There's so much going on in this song holy s*** and Jimmy is just thing talking all the way through it too. There are parts where it feels like he's narrating a story and the guitar is just in the background but he's playing all of this at the same time and that just blows my mind. Thanks for dropping this lesson.
Thank you so so much for making this lesson Marty. I wanted to learn this song for years but I knew the only person that could explain it clearly and good enough would be you. I was right!
Great video! I can’t play note for note without being bored but you got me in Jimi’s head so I’ve been playing along with my own style. Sounding great marty! thank u
Marty, you make the best and clearest playthroughs, you're an excellent teacher! Thank you so much.
Other guitar channels say they try but there is only do or do not. At MartyMusic there is only do. Thank you Master!
ha ha ha thanks Ray!
Is that a Strat or Lightsaber? Or maybe both.
Dude...I've seen some of your acoustic lessons basically for beginners. They were OK. But I had no idea you play a Strat like that. I'm impressed.
Marvellous indeed sir. I'm gonna spend some lovely time playing this.
Thank you so much, Marty, for sharing your marvelous talent - very much appreciated!
After learning little wing this came so easily. It’s using a lot of the same technique, chords, etc so fun to learn this. Little wing took so long for me this about a day
Another awesome lesson, Marty! Thanks, as always. Viewers, try learning this and Little Wing, together. Lots of great overlap!
Favorite Hendrix song!
Thanks a bunch Marty, this video finally helped me learn Castles Made of Sand. None of the other videos on UA-cam were as helpful as this one.

Hey Joey!!! Thanks for supporting me by supporting this channel "MartyMusic" - All my best!
Dude! Cannot thank you enough for teaching Hendrix theory! On an unrelated topic, I’ve always been interested in being able to emulate the piano part on Joe Cocker‘s feeling all right. Can’t find anything really good out there on UA-cam as far as how to play that part. However, using the Hendrix theory, or style, whatever you wanna call it, I’ve been able to come up with something that is satisfactory to me for those parts! And has really opened up my guitar world. I’ve been playing for a long time, never fully understood it, now I’ve got a different grasp🤠👍🏿🍺👏🤜🏽
Such a fantastic lesson for such a great song. Thanks Marty!
Thanks so much Conor! More new stuff coming right here to "MartyMusic"
Marty your awsome. I love the lessons. Your inspiring me to get better. so I can have fun and enjoy the instrument..I never cared about anything but power chords and gain to ten. I jst couldn't play anything else youve helped me Soo much bro....stay safe out there..👍🎸♥️😷
awesome lesson.....one of my all time favorite hendrix songs.....thanks marty!
I really appreciate that Michael!
Hey Marty! Dude, I’m watching this for the first time, and I had to pause. You really like the half step on that slide as opposed to Hendrix’s whole step. I have to say in my opinion both sound nice. Awesome lesson. Rock on M🎸🎼🤘🏽
I would like to thank you... I never would be able to fix that by myself. Great job !
Love you brother . Your great great to learn from.STAY SAFE & HEALTHY THRU THE HARD TIMES OF 20-21 ( I NEED TO LEARN FROM YOU!!!!! )
And seriously. Hendrix is the man it cannot be understated.

This helped me a lot, Thanks Marty!
🕵🏽🎸🎥 another banger! Yes yes how hyped can I be! And over these last 5 years I've noticed how fluent you've become with guitar and you were always good, now great.
