    About 5 years ago my family learned my mom had a huge aneurysm. For more than a month she kept getting these terrible headaches every day but unlike normal headaches these were very different -.> as she described it “it feels like an ice pick has been stuck right in my left eye & into my head “ her primary care doctor sent her for an MRI & immediately he got a call from the radiologist & then he in turn immediately called us -> she was referred her to the top vascular neurosurgeon in the state (who is, as you probably can guess given the theme of this TED talk, Iranian American)
    Turns out she had a huge aneurysm that was pressing on the optic nerve behind her left eye. It was bad & from the time they detected it to the time she was in surgery was less than one week. (it was on the verge of rupturing & it already had leaked some blood, so time was of the essence)
    Our family will always be grateful to the neurosurgeon he is Iranian American & he is so talented that my mom’s aneurysm was a piece of cake for him to repair. All the other doctors were freaking out but when we finally met with the neurosurgeon he sat us all down & clearly explained his plan for mom’s surgery . It was too large and the walls were too fragile to do endoscopic coiling so he did a craniotomy and placed a titanium clip at the neck of the aneurysm which deflated & is now gone. The surgery only took 3 hours, she was in the Neuro ICU for 2 days & she was able to come home after that. Can you imagine having major brain surgery & being able to go home 2 days later? It’s a testament to the surgeon’s skill. She still sees the surgeon annually for imaging & check ups (once this type of aneurysm develops there’s a 30 to 40 % chance that another one might develop & we don’t want to get to the point where another one develops quietly & is close to the point of rupture - as we were with the original one. Mom has a small scar within her hair (you can’t even see it). My family & I are forever grateful for this incredible Iranian American neurosurgeon.

      ***** The beginning of Chinese culture dates back to about 8.000 - to 10.000 years. In America there have been human made artefacts found which have an age of approximately 14.000 years (of native American origin of course). And there have been cultures living in what is today Russia for nearly as long, too. Just to give you an idea that those cultures haven't started yesterday either. Middle East has a magnificent and fascinating past. But there has been lots of stuff going on in the rest of the world at the same time. However, now look at the sheer sizes of the nations you just mentioned. USA, China and Russia are 3 of the largest countries in the world. China alone provides 1/7 of the entire world population with 1.36 billion people, a long, militant past and fierce, aggressive leadership. Russian culture isn't any softer either, nor the US-American one, in a different way. And you ask yourself how they managed to become powerful? You need to do some more research.

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce 9 років тому +8

      ***** I don't believe in wars which usually kill 5 arseholes and 50 Million innocent people. History since the beginning of kindoms and empires shows that we don't get rid of the troublemakers by killing and devastation. They appear everywhere again. After such a long history, as a species, we should have gained some wisdom and common sense to see that. But we haven't. I don't actually care about power. I just want to live my life in peace and do what makes me happy. But as long as there are people who seek power I can't because they will dominate my interests. I think mankind is turning in circles here since the beginning of our kind and will go on like that because our species is successful this way. Power always is with the most aggressive, flexible and adaptable people.

    • @mrwebber35
      @mrwebber35 8 років тому

      +lili M The United States voted George Bush and people like him out of being the President because the people who vote were tired of war. President Obama was to be the one to change the hearts and minds of ISIS. This is not happening so far so when I mention "Wars" I am sure "Wars" are on the minds of the audience so they don't feel much like laughing about the jokes about IRAN. Yes IRAN is fighting ISIS too but they send arms to rebels that bomb American friends and allies. the whole middle east is a mess and difficult to laugh about, that is all I mean.

      Well, Im not sure about that, since cold war is happening in EU too so it doesn't apply to M.E only.
      On the other hand, if people dont feel like laughing they went to a wrong place, dont you think so?

      Read Kahlil Gibran and Salman Rushdie. You will love them. I have had Middle-Eastern friends from various countries and various sects of Islam and other religions, including Christianity. Every one of them was so kind, sensitive, honest, and warm it was humbling. I felt crass by comparison. I moved away and I miss them.

      Indeed, one of my favourite countries. Had a great holiday there some years ago. Love your rebellious history and can see why you are proud of it. Wish that you could become even more independent and keep to your dynastic traditions, by becoming Zoroastrian again or having a religiously devout Shah or something. And if I believed the testimony of Mordechai Vanunu and I was Iranian I would want nuclear weapons also.
