Although it's quite short, Journey is still a very deep and fascinating game. Its music really gives off that feel of determination and hope. It is quite delicate too.

This made me tear up again and took me back to my playthroughs of Journey. Austin Wintory is a genius and I love the use of lyrics here. Marco, have you played and/or done ABZÛ in the channel yet? The creators also worked on Journey so it has similar vibes and style despite being single-player, and of course the music was also composed by Wintory and it's breathtaking as well
I've always loved this song and sometimes the emotions are so overwhelming I start crying while singing along. The singer's delivery is so wonderful, it feels like the hero's reflection of their journey and an experience of processing both grief and acceptance about your purpose all in one song. It starts off confident like you said but becomes so almost sorrowful in the middle japanese section before returning back to resolute in the final repeat of the title line. The way that her voice goes so high on the second to last "que je suis née" and so soft on "ne me plaignez pas" is such a wonderful callback to the soaring heights and spiritual enlightenment of apotheosis.
I Remember the first time I played this game, I fell in love with the soundtrack it makes me happy and cry of how beautiful it is, it is one of the few digital soundtracks that I bought even when is available on stream platforms, maybe is not much but it was my way at that time to show my appreciation to Austin Wintory
You might enjoy checking out music from The Pathless. It’s similar to Journey and Abzu, but a bit more action oriented. Very good soundtrack from what I remember.
I recommend the Game Score Fanfare video called "The Story Hidden in Journey's soundtrack" where they talk about The Hero's Journey (the narrative trope) in Journey (the game)
Journey in its totality is such a _fantastic_ experience. I sadly didn't get to save the VOD before it got deleted from Twitch but one time I was replaying it (I like to do a big session where I help newbies from start to finish so they get the co-op achievements), I'd actually matched up with a Twitch streamer playing it blind and right at the end where you get to draw in the snow, I'd drawn hearts around them (which they and the Chat loved, lmao), and they were talking in the credits how they (roughly paraphrased) "gained a ton of hope for humanity because I turned around waiting for them to follow me, and _they were drawing hearts in the snow._ It's so rare you get good co-op experiences online like that nowadays.". I found their stream afterwards and talked in chat for a bit so I still got to say hi outside of *rapid chime beeping* lmao 🤭 Actually, if anyone's up for sharing, does anyone else have any good Journey co-op memories? I love hearing stories about this game from other players!
I will forever remember the first time i played this game. I had just gotten a PS4 at the time and decided to play the game to try the bad boy out. At first i was sort of confused by the whole experience, but at awe by the atmosphere of the game and then excited to learn more about the story and background. When i got to the part where coop starts, i saw this guy in white cloth walking around the dunes, then we finally saw eachother, stood still for a bit, then i walked up on him. I thought he was an NPC to be honest, started to follow him around as he pinged, still thought he wasnt human though. It was only after half an hour of game, right about the Road of Trials section, while we slided down the sand, that i realized... Maybe this is someone else. At that moment, while we slided down together in the sunset, i shed a tear. To this day i dont know why, maybe its because i was going through some harsh times back then, but... Something clicked. After that it was like we were friends since forever, even though we couldnt "talk" to eachother, we still know exactly what the other one would do. The rest of the game, all the way to the snow area, was a breeze to get through, and hella fun aswell. When we started to climb the mountain, on the last leg of the journey, as we went on our way through the machine graveyard and then to the snowfield, i was worried for my bud, we were almost hugging. Then we made it up, we were there at the end, this is when i broke, i started crying, it was such a beautiful sight to behold with someone else that i couldnt hold back my tears. When we reached the light none of us wanted to go through, so we went in it slowly... And then it was over. And i was left there crying. I saw the name of my bud, it was a guy from the US by the looks of it(im from Brazil), and he had become my friend without ever saying me a word or telling me his name. Journey really brings out the best in co-op experiences, because it can connect people from such different backgrounds, such different lives and languages, all of that doesnt matter when you play this beautiful game.
i had never known there was actual languages, and especially french (my mother tongue) in it and now that i've read everything im just even more on the verge of tears
I don't know how the musicians play songs like this and don't cry while playing. I simply hear the first lines of the singer and start sheding tears. What a beautiful song. This one and "Apotheosis".
I have a personal list of video games that I use as examples of “Video games are ART”. JOURNEY Is my #2. This game….. I still remember when I played it for the first time, on my PS3. Thank you for making me remember once again, why I love video games to heart.
omg I'm so grateful we don't stop talking about Journey 😭😭😭 I played it when It came out and I'm still obsessed with the soundtrack. It tucks at my heart everytime.. I especially love the very last post (when reaching the mountain top) and it makes me cry everytime❤
Journey and all aspects of it is one of those pieces of art that truly leaves us speechless. I love how the song starts deep and ominous and it grows into a majestic waltz (at least it does sounds like one to me). It's like the Journeyer-now-turned-into-Star is dancing off from the mountain's top and back to the start of the desert with a serene smile on their face and the certainty in their heart that they did everything right and all was worth it - even the pain and the cold and the loneliness at the mountain's foot. Austin Wintory and cellist Tina Guo and everyone involved in this ost really played their hearts out and I can't thank them enough for this! ❤️
Journey was a game I experienced and played many times in my younger teens. I still have access to the game on our old but still working PS3. It’s a game I can always say that’s always going to hold up through generations. Not because it looks good from the players eye but the music is incredible and I feel players that enjoy music WILL enjoy Journey.
Oh, i enjoy your videos so much! The fact that we can both listen to truly beautiful music, and the discuss it, feels like a true and honest heart to heart discussion Music is art, and i love it, and thank you Marco for sharing it with us
when first look at it, i thought it would be an usual adventure finding treasure chest with cartoon style of animation, so i give it a try . MAN I DID NOT READY TO RECEIVE A MASTERPIECE OF A GAME. It blow my mine, the game you don't just look, you FEEL it. Perfect story, beautiful graphic, god forbid the whole fking soundtrack playlist. This going to be one of the best down to my grave!
Love both this and the "revised" choir version from Traveller - A Journey symphony ❤. I've never played Journey, but this is one of the piece that put it's composer Austin Wintory (who's got an amazing UA-cam channel, just like you) on my musical radar and he's one of my favourite contemporary composers now, so...🥰
Makes me cry every time. I watched Jacksepticeye play this back when it came out and I wanted it, but couldn't get it. And then randomly in 2020, it was offered for free on PlayStation Plus, and I downloaded and installed it instantly. Of all the games I've gotten since getting a PS4, it is one of the 3 that have never been uninstalled to conserve space. I will always keep this one up because I randomly get the urge to play the 3rd level now and then and I just love the vibes.
I'm not crying, you are... Oh who the hell am I kidding, this entire game makes me cry like a baby and I love every moment of it. This entire game makes me bawl like crazy and I will never stop playing it. Austin Wintory is a god of music. Thank you for blessing us with your gift.
If you don't mind doing two versions of the same song I would absolutely love to see commentary on the Traveler's Symphony, especially the remaster of I Was Born for This. Even better if you do a listen of the entire soundtrack like you did with Music of the Spheres.
Definitely agree. This is very profound. I never played Journey, being an Xbox kid when this released. But this song gave me this sense of childlike wonder and ease, and then just kind of turned into this thing that feels like an awakening of something when the lyrics begin. This was a fantastic piece.
There's a fantastic video from Polygon where they interview Austin Wintory and he talks about how difficult it was to compose Apotheosis and the general process behind the game's musical composition, I highly recommend checking it out
I have Journey's whole soundtrack that I play when I want to feel my inner peace. It's such an amazing concert of emotions, helping one to achieve inner peace.
What a beautiful takeaway, this life is all we got so we need to treat it with as much care as we can, each other, ourselves and our life with love; after all, we only got one life and experience of it, it's all about the Journey, our Journey that we take and create, to face whatever lays on our path, regardless if it's good or bad, we accept it all and keep moving forward, we are born for this indeed~
i can't believe i waited 11 years before i finally played journey for myself. gameplay of it from a youtuber really, *really* just doesn't punch you with what it makes you feel the same way as when you play it yourself. PLEASE tell me you've listened to the orchestrated album of journey's OST!!!
I don’t know if this rec will ever see the light of day but some very profound FromSoft music is included as end credits, specifically Nameless Song and Epilogue from DS1 and DS3 respectively, both very beautiful and moving tracks. Hope you get a chance to listen to them! Keep doing what you do o7
I recently played through Journey for the first time due to a coworkers recommendation, and it was such an interesting experience. It was incredibly short (for me only like 2-3 hours) but I couldn't help smiling throughout so many parts of it. It was such a relaxing and pleasant playthrough and I would definitely recommend others play through it.
One of my favorite games of all times. And one of those that made me choose my career path ! Can't wait for more of your content on ThatGameCompany game's.
Its just like a sonata song but its for a journey that uphold ahead so we can explore the unkown that haven't been explore or have been explore but we explore with our self experience of ecploration love it
A game i feel EVERYONE can benefit from playing. It feels strangely nostalgic, almost like you're going through primal memories. I played through this during the quarantine, with my sister watching. It felt soulful while i was playing, but i also felt i didn't get the most out of it, because of my gamer's intuition.
I feel as though ThatGameCompany, while not doing anything perhaps revolutionary in there gameplay or story for their stories, they knew how to manipulate how players feel. My Uncle showed me this game when I was 14, and that experience to this day, almost a decade later, has changed how I view the world. A not insignificant portion of the emotion I felt from Journey was due to Austin Wintory's masterful composition of this soundtrack.
The music is so moving that interrupting it would feel like stopping someone halfway through a good story. I thought of where I am in life right now, and where I'd like to be in the future once I meet my latest goals, while listening and could feel the music not necessarily ushering me onward, but rather saying that the journey is there for me to take should I aim to do so. I just recently scored above the class average on a recent test in my classes in college again, so I'm doing something right so far. Nonetheless, I've felt as though I am behind compared to friends and others around me, even though it's best not to compare yourself to others. Journey, aptly named of course, speaks to the road one has to take to arrive somewhere. Life isn't as simple as going from A to B, it involves everything between A and b as well. This isn't a revelation, mind you, as this is something everyone knows deep down, but one can't help but sometimes feel as though they'd like to be further on down the road than they are currently, even if it can't be helped. We are all at the stages we're meant to be at, we just have to keep marching onward. "Excelsior," as Stan Lee would say; meaning onward and upward to greater things, like moving through the Journey we call life. Thanks for another awesome video Marco!
I remember the first time i played Journey, found a random dude, thought he was an NPC for the first half an hour we spent together, and then cried while we swam through the sands together in the Sands of Trials part. And then i cried again while we went through a snowy hellscape together. And then i cried again while we flied through paradise together. And then i cried again when we went through the light side by side. And i cried one last time when i saw the name of that random guy, knowing i had made a friend without even needing to know that.
From a comment on the original video, the lyrics _Stat sua cuique dies_ _Stat sua cuique dies_ To each his day is given (Aeneid) _Mæl is me to feran_ Time is it for me to go (Beowulf) _Aleto men moi nostos_ _Aleto men moi nostos_ Lost is my homecoming (Iliade, Omero) _C’est pour cela que je suis née_ I was born for this (Joan of Arc) _Kono michi ya_ _Yuku hito nishi ni_ _Kono michi ya_ _Aki no kure_ On this road Where nobody else travels On this road Autumn Nightfall (Matsuo Basho haiku) _C’est pour cela que je suis née_ _Ne me plaignez pas_ _C’est pour cela que je suis née_ I was born for this Do not pity me I was born for this (Joan of Arc)
Two artists that I feel have been,,,especially impactful in tems of soundtrack artists in recent years has been Austin Wintory and Gareth Coker; When you think of contemporary composers that have contributed something meaningful to the sphere, you would of course think of Jesper Kyd or Jeremy Soule - and there's no denying tha their work is fine...But with both Coker and Wintory with the music they've presented in these games, they...*dance* with you, play with you; beg with you to come along and be a part of the story and participate instead of spectate.
Hey Marco! Been watching you ever since I found you reacting to the darktide music, I really enjoy your commentary on the songs. I dont know music very well so I've learned a lot from your explanations. I do have a few music recommendations for you, Tanc a Lelek from the Highfleet OST. Its a post apocalyptic heavily soviet inspired and incredibly difficult game where to my knowledge, you have to captain an airship while trying not to be nuked, send nukes to others, and most importantly not be found with the most archaic and kinda accurate tech for the time. The song only plays when everything is lost and you are really just counting down the seconds until you die in battle. A second song from the same game, Dronish Decent is also a great piece, to me it captures what the name suggests, a descent towards the ground as your ship starts to fail. This one plays for the same scenarios, knowing you only have seconds to live but this one is for long ranged missiles or simply running out of fuel. Also, please please keep reacting to warcraft music, there are so many good songs I couldn't list them all in a post. But some of the best are the Grizzly Hills main theme, its an area of very relaxing dense woodland. Arthas my son is basically the next part of the song you reacted to, Invincible. A Call To Arms is a piece related to Tirion Fordring, the character who helps the players kill the lich king among many other great deeds.
Anyone who tells me that there is nothing beyond this life has no poetry in their soul. Music, poetry, art... they are Spiritual in nature, you can't convince me otherwise. Journey is Art top to bottom. The sense, the feelings... the unique form of co-op the game has, the music itself. There was a convention I went to where people competed to play Journey - for the purpose of being chosen to play the game Live before the con-goers at a special event there. The music of Journey would be played Live to the Live gameplay. I wish I had attended because that would have been wonderful. I would also highly recommend checking out ABZU which is by the same people. I have seen a desert be likened to a sea and I have a sea I can liken to the stars. Be lost in its ebb and flow. :)
YES! Anything Yuki Kajiura would be fantastic, really! If Marco wants something from a games ost due to the nature of the channel, I'd HEAVILY recommend "Godsibb" from Xenosaga III. The 2008 Live version is DEFINITELY superior, but the studio version kicks ass too!
@@axismusicman I've been a huge fan of her music and projects since I saw Tsubasa Chronicles, which she also composed a soundtrack for, it's absolutely iconic - that was like, 17 years ago. Totally recommend going through her huge catalogue, if you haven't already, haha. The 2008 FicrionJinctiom live I mentioned earlier is a perfect way to start and catch her hits! ❤️
You need to listen to pathless ost, also a wintory soundtrack. If journey is all about who you may meet along the way. Pathless is all about forging your own path - no one can walk it with you and you can follow no one
Wonderful video, wonderful game. The soundtrack really does feel like... a Journey :p Would like to hear your reaction/interpretation on "The Cycle Ends" from Guild Wars 2, honestly the whole game is a bank of amazing songs made by even more amazing composers (Lena Raine, Maclaine Diemer and Jeremy Soule)
What an awesome track and glad you're showing this, i've never heard this before. Really enjoyed your video! Did you ever heard "In hell we live, lament"?
Simply beautiful. Have you also played Abzû? It's a game by a different company but the lead art director also worked on Journey. And of course it also has a beautiful soundtrack.
Hello, Im yet again going to recommend the game OST of "If found", at least the third song in the album if you cant listen to them all. Looking forward to a blind reaction!
While i doubt you'll see this, i would like it if you listened to some of the sound track of "Worlds adrift" the music is beautiful and i think you'd like it

Your music lifts and breaks my heart all at the same time. It's achingly beautiful. Thank you for filling everyone's life with the beauty of music.
I feel journey is just one of those games that could survive humanity and be understood by those who find it after humanity is gone.
Literally the plot of the game kind of
You are correct
That would be a fine legacy to leave behind
I love that the lyrics are a collection of quotes from stories that follow the narrative path of a hero’s journey.

No truer words have been said than Marco's. This game is incredibly amazing.
I found their stream afterwards and talked in chat for a bit so I still got to say hi outside of *rapid chime beeping* lmao 🤭
Actually, if anyone's up for sharing, does anyone else have any good Journey co-op memories? I love hearing stories about this game from other players!
Ive got a video essay about my last experience coming next week ish!
Journey is such a gem in no small part to Wintory, he has so much skill and passion for his craft I can't help but share in it a little.
That is an absolutely perfect description of this piece of music and that wonderful game.
Beyond good and evil has an incredibly underrated soundtrack especially Frame of Mind. that's far the best song
One of my favourite piece of musics of all time for sure. Thank you for covering this!
I literally cannot play this game without crying. I love it dearly.
"There are pieces that exist that deliver us from this life" That's exactly how I feel about Journey and its main theme.
I'm pretty sure Austin's got an As noted on this piece where he explains why those quotes were chosen for this :D
Oh, i enjoy your videos so much!
The fact that we can both listen to truly beautiful music, and the discuss it, feels like a true and honest heart to heart discussion
Music is art, and i love it, and thank you Marco for sharing it with us
when first look at it, i thought it would be an usual adventure finding treasure chest with cartoon style of animation, so i give it a try
.
I've never played Journey, but this is one of the piece that put it's composer Austin Wintory (who's got an amazing UA-cam channel, just like you) on my musical radar and he's one of my favourite contemporary composers now, so...🥰
An amazing soundtrack that comes with a free game attached
This was a fantastic piece.
it's on pc now, highly recommend it
There's a fantastic video from Polygon where they interview Austin Wintory and he talks about how difficult it was to compose Apotheosis and the general process behind the game's musical composition, I highly recommend checking it out
I have Journey's whole soundtrack that I play when I want to feel my inner peace.
We have here!
That music is unique! It expresses chaos, magic and serenity.
Its just like a sonata song but its for a journey that uphold ahead so we can explore the unkown that haven't been explore or have been explore but we explore with our self experience of ecploration love it
When u think about it, its kinda leave you speechless.
I play the flute in orchestra and have done so since I was a kid, I played this piece at my father's funeral.
Hitting me with feels this early. Beautifully put.
I have no doubt that my future self will have so much nostalgia for this game!
MOUTH IS FOAMING.
From a comment on the original video, the lyrics

Как я понимаю твою реакцию! Смотрю в тебя, как в зеркало! Я всегда практически на грани слез, когда это слушаю. Это прекрасно
Grissini Project´s cover is so beautiful.
Hey Marco! Been watching you ever since I found you reacting to the darktide music, I really enjoy your commentary on the songs. I dont know music very well so I've learned a lot from your explanations.
I do have a few music recommendations for you,
Tanc a Lelek from the Highfleet OST.
Austin is a god among humankind. His music moves me in a way few other modern composers can achieve.
I’m not crying, I’m not crying, I’m not crying
I know nothing about this game, but that was incredible!
hey Marco, try Kalafina - Into The World. It's an absolute gem of 3 voices harmonies and sounds like they are opera-trained as well!
@@CelticBotansDigitalArt exactly! I just finished watching Garden of Sinners and Yuki Kajura did OST there as well and it was absolutely masterful!
The soundtrack really does feel like... a Journey :p
Would like to hear your reaction/interpretation on "The Cycle Ends" from Guild Wars 2, honestly the whole game is a bank of amazing songs made by even more amazing composers (Lena Raine, Maclaine Diemer and Jeremy Soule)
What an awesome track and glad you're showing this, i've never heard this before. Really enjoyed your video!
Did you ever heard "In hell we live, lament"?
Bro abzu, listen to “to know water” you’ll be just as blown away, not in comparison to this song but abzu’s music is definitely up there
MARCOMEATBALL
Simply beautiful. Have you also played Abzû? It's a game by a different company but the lead art director also worked on Journey. And of course it also has a beautiful soundtrack.
For the lyrics in this, apparently they were translated and relevant stories found only a few days after the game released.
I recommend you to listen to "The Flight". It's another masterpiece from a kind of sequel game to "Journey" named "Sky: Children of Light".
Would be awesome to see more reactions for Austin Wintory's music like the music from The Banner Saga and Tooth and Tail!
This is the theme song of my life.
Hello, Im yet again going to recommend the game OST of "If found", at least the third song in the album if you cant listen to them all. Looking forward to a blind reaction!
Listen to the anniversary version featuring other UA-camrs next? Wintory somehow took it to new heights!
you ABSOLUTELY need to listen to some ABZU tracks if you haven’t already, they’re also made by Austin Wintory.
Journey is amazing for sure!
I suggest you looking into ABZU music, it is the same as Journey but more into the ocean theme!
Me seeing the title and hoping we’ll get outer wilds again eventually
You should check out some of Battlefield 1 Themes, they just hit right in the feels.
It may sound silly but i highly recommend listening to battle cats big bang theme or cat god o' fortuna
While i doubt you'll see this, i would like it if you listened to some of the sound track of "Worlds adrift" the music is beautiful and i think you'd like it
If you’ve already gotten your hands on Journey, you should definitely check out Sky: Children of the Light too
