So the story is that Sean Murray had listened to the band 65daysofstatic all throughout the development of No Mans Sky, and he approached them directly to use one their songs, Debutante, in the first trailer for the game. They apparently had a conversation about the games soundtrack and essentially said "how bout we write it?". Seans criteria for this ost was literally for them to just do their thing, as their natural sound was already so intertwined. The result was Music For an Infinite Universe. Theres a bit of a twist though. first half of the album is written tracks, very intentional n stuff. But because of the nature of the game, the soundtrack you experience while playing is quite different. It, like everything else, is procedurally generated taking samples from all the songs and weaving them together based on the context of the game, effectively remixing them in real time. Thus, the latter half of the ost is comprised of procedurally generated remixes of the first half. The album is geneuinely incredible, and im glad the developers have turned the game around to the point where its finally deserving of such a fantastic ost.
This soundtrack perfectly captures the game's aesthetic, like a 70's spacepunk feel mashed with modern electronic music. Does a great job of reflecting the practically infinite universe of the game
NMS has really gone a long way. With how bad was its launch, the devs really pulled through and delivered new content year after year (and still going). It's a really great game nowadays
NMS has a feeling of being alone and not alone. A feeling of tranquility and danger. A feeling of emptiness and infinity. The game is one of the deepest games I've ever explored.
My favorite of the NMS soundtrack is Supermoon. By the way, I'm pretty sure this genre of music is called post-rock. I would describe it as very expressive instrumental electric guitar, mostly. And like you said a lot of the time it's longer pieces, lots of repeating patterns slowly building and evolving
Asimov edges out Supermoon for me. You're ritght about this being postrock, though its probably more on the electronic end - they were one of my gateways into post rock.
The original trailer song was Debutante from the same band (65daysofstatic) on a previous album. This album has some fantastic repeated themes that run through it giving it a great feeling of cohesion even when a lot of tracks are quite different.
What I love about the choice of having 65daysofstatic be the music artist for the game is that it doesn't go the safe route of Star Wars "space opera" with a bunch of orchestral sounding music and they don't rely solely on sci-fi synths to get a future sound. The "Post Rock" style that 65daysofstatic has already been doing for like 17 years or so is still a wonderful backing track. The reverb on the electric guitar in the intro giving to the vastness of space as Marco said, filling the otherwise silence. There's energy in the guitar, and the repeated riffs and pattern are just earworms. Say what you will about NMS, it has it's problems. But the one thing they got right even at the beginning was the music.
@@bruhshkebabs There is no full OST - It's procedurally generated from atoms composed by 65daysofstatic so the game will make things up on the fly that the band have never heard before. It's trippy and mindblowing! They released the double album, and the 2nd disc was an example of the kind of thing that the generator would come up with, but not necessarily in the game
First trailer was Debutante from 65daysofstatic. Getting 65dos to make a soundtrack was such a pivotal moment in both NMS and 65dos life paths : ) Game now has one of the truly unique sounds ever, and the group is now stuck in 24/7 procedural music streams : )
I'm so happy! I didn't expect to see NMS here! I love this game and it's soundtrack. Especially Supermoon and Escape Velocity. 10:06 exactly!! This game and its music always gives me this feeling, it makes you pause and contemplate your existence, it makes you feel that existence itself is awe-inspiring. Which has quite the interesting implications if you know the game's lore hehe. The hint is in the title, END of The World Sun, yet it gives you an immense sense of drive and hope and starting a new life hmmm :) It really is music for an infinite universe
This one is my second favorite piece in the soundtrack only second because of Asimov. This one though whenever I hear it on planets while running around it always hits right on cue.
NMS has to have one of my favorite OSTs of all time, the style is so amazing and immersive when you're playing the game, the sound design is also incredible.
It sounds like you're alone, and a little sad for it, but also reveling in the solitude. Excited and full of curiosity. Resolved to carry on regardless of all else because this is what you're meant to do. You have nowhere you're meant to be, you're meant to move and observe. It is the sound of being lost and alone, and not minding a single bit. The anthem of the wanderer.
No Man's Sky has unice soundtrack. Because it's just something more than usual ambient or just song. More of these tracks follows you in this journey. In other games, you'll notice that you've heard it so many times and it's already boring. But here the effect is "oh my God, there's that masterpiece again. Just like in minecraft song ''Sweden''. My favorite ambient/music is ''Heliosperhe''. There is more but it fits to me very well. Maybe ''Escape Velocity'' to but it's for different type of mood. It's strange how many songs have own purpose. I've asked myself this question many times, that every music has a purpose, not just listening to it on repeat. Let's say, what would a human encounter with other civilizations sound like? I immediately think of - Memories of the lost by Endless Space 2 :D
Ooooh, this is very similar to how Subnautica soundtrack felt to me. There's a couple of tracks that just hit every time they start, even though it's supposed to be just ambient. And the sense of discovery, danger and mystery is just sublime. God Rays and Alterra Science by Simon Chylinski, if you never heard any of the Subnautica ever - listen to those. Abandon Ship is also so iconic it's a meme in a community, rightly so.
Depends on what you mean by unique, it sounds like and is instrumental post-rock, I can think of a few bands that sound like this except NMS also adds their own spin with sci-fi / elcctronic sounds and even that isn't outside the realm of instrumental post-rock. Not to take away from what you said but it's not unique, it's just cool that they decided to go with instrumental post-rock since it's a pretty niche music genre that I never hear outside of listening to the bands themselves.
No Man's Sky OST really emphasizing the feeling of: "There's worlds out there waiting to be found. Unknown wonders, dangerous mysteries, thrilling discoveries, infinite possibilities. It'll be a long journey, but we are lucky to uncover them all."
from 9:10 it felt like I was in a cockpit falling towards the ground with the increase of one particular noise reflecting the increase in speed as gravity pulls you faster and faster until you eventually regain control, level out and fly across the sky. wow
no man's sky is the dictionary definition of Ascent from Darkness. Combo x2 of recommending A Light from Shore from the Call of Duty Zombies soundtrack

Man this game makes me feel things that is hard to describe, the music, the ambient, the visuals For me is one of the prettiest games there are, and also with a deep meaning behind it's story Just exploring new sistems and planets would make a great experience, but you can do so much more, you can build your own bases, have your own cargo ship with it's crew, visit stations and even reach out to beings that are too powerfull to even understand You can get lost and still enjoy all it has to offer you, there's no limit on what you can do, that limit is only made by you
Really glad you did something from NMS, because of the tragic launch state this game is severely underrated and as a side effect the phenomenal scoring gets ignored too. Yet again you put a spotlight on another deserving piece, well done!
Weirdly enough, I think the 65DoS song that is most associated with the game is the one that isn't on the soundtrack; Debutante from their album We Were Exploding Anyway. The strange thing is that I'd already used that song as part of a custom soundtrack for X3, another space game:)
There are some really good NMS songs, End of the World Sun is one of my favourite, as well as Outlier/EOTWS_Variantion1 which is more of a gorgeous ambient. Asimov is truly grand, and Supermoon is arguably one that I have had to sit down for. Then there is Escape Velocity, which uses dissonance and great walls of sound in a very fascinating way, and of course, the most commonly heard, Blueprint for a Slow Machine. I would love to hear your reaction to more NMS! Some of the songs may be of interest to you
The weirdness of the no man's sky soundtrack is that their are only about 20 or so songs, than a bunch of sample parts of those songs that actively generate and react as you play. That is so cool to me, the profound fleeting wonder of discovery and to know you are part of something greater, even if your own part in the great journey is small and insignificant at the time. Unfortunately it does mean that its impossible to look up certain tracks. BUT it does mean that every time you create a new galaxy to explore each has a soundscape unique to your own game seed. Wow you really get the profound meaning of this game just from analyzing the trailer music. That's kinda cool
Worth highlighting that the generative music system 65DoS created for NMS is now put to use on a continuous stream called Wreckage Systems, which has been running non-stop for a couple of years now. ua-cam.com/video/GE2nVZTE7tw/v-deo.html
I'll never play the game due to time commitment required, but I have the whole OST on my phone. It's really a unique soundscape, reminds me weirdly enough of Disco Elysium for some reason (probably because both of the groups for the games are British/English in origin) - that sense of losing yourself and contemplaying life, as you mentioned.
NMS doesn't require you to commit much time at all. The game is a sandbox. The main quest and every activity in the game are all completely optional. Whether you want to explore, practice your creativity with building things, go bounty hunting, start fights with the local sentinels, dick around with other players in the Anomaly, or just settle down and start a farm, YOU choose how you want to spend your time. The story ends only when you say it does.
No Man's Sky has come SO far, its a really great game these days. Just found your channel, really enjoying, REALLY hope you get to some of the AMAZING soundtrack of Horizon Zero Dawn & Horizon Foridden West, maybe Aloy's Theme, or the Main theme, or some others
End of the World Sun was always one of my absolute favorites. Since you're into contemplative stuff, how about Escape Velocity? ;) Great video as always!
Oh man I love the entire No Man's Sky ost, it's fantastic. 65daysofstatic is a fantastic post-rock band and I love everything that they've done. edit: Listening to this has made me really want to go back to NMS. I miss that rush of zooming in my spaceship fighting an enemy, and the rise of the music making the moment incredibly epic.
NMS has an amazing soundtrack that you can just vibe to. Flying through the universe as they fade in and out different parts of the OST according to the current context. Wonderful video, keep it up.
Man I am LOVING this channel! It is so cool seeing in so many videos how moved you are by the music, most times physically, I do the same thing haha. I would love to see you react to the "Lost Elf Theme" from Dragon Age Inquisition, it is one of the best pieces of music in gaming, though I am assuming it is probably copyright protected, even if it is you should still listen to it cos just wow.
Fascinating interpretation of the song. I never heard it as something hopeful, myself. To me, EotWS tells the story of a ship's dying moments. That same grand drifting motion at the beginning representing the calm of space, so abruptly broken by the ringing guitar riffs of alarms and warnings, the deep thumps of the pilot's heart, and the anxious drone of that constant hi-hat. A break into a frantic drumbeat if the pilot running through the corridors of their ships as the alarms crescendo. A sudden gap of silence as an explosion breaks through the hull of the ship. The final movement of the rising, hopeful guitars are the pilot ejecting in a life pod down to the planet's surface as flaming debris falls around them, the final seconds a mess of screeching metal and the agonized wails of the once-proud starship. "And now the screens grow blinding bright as the fire burns ahead. The hull around me whispers as it glows an angry red. There's a high, cold, wail behind me, as though starships, too, could cry. But my hand is cold and steady, for the time has come to die" - Jordin Kare, "Darkness"
This song played during the Pathfinder Update trailer for NMS. And the moment that you mentioned, were it seemed like the sound of "forward propulsion, like an engine cutting on for the first time". That was the point in the trailer where they were introducing the new planetary rover/exocraft land vehicles and the displayed that the exocrafts had boost functionality. It was an amazing moment in the trailer.
The really cool thing about NMS is that the music is procedural as well so it changes according to wyat youre experiencing, building on the base of the soundtrack. It's truly a game you can get lost in and you're completely right about it making you contemplate your existence.
HAHAAAAAAAA BRILLIANT! oh man I'm really glad you enjoyed this one. It really does put you in your mind and gets your imagination going. Really powerful! Man. The universe is as dangerous and powerful as it is vast.
The intro to EOTWS is so beautiful, it encapsulates perfectly the bittersweet feelings of the ending of something that was full of meaning (life, the universe...etc). I'm almost moved to tears everytime I hear it.
To correct you, the song from the E3 trailer was Debutante (still 65DoS) from their previous album We Were Exploding Anyway (and is also an amazing song!)
you should check out the Main Theme of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it has a Latin choir (not unlike One Winged Angel, both were composed by the same guy,) but the vocals at the end always get me 🥲
The soundtrack is as beautiful in it's complexity as are the procedural generated worlds in this game. I've been playing this game for 4 years now. There is always something new to do in this game. I'm a builder in the game I've seen some spectacular work from other players. And there are those who make music called bytebeats. From simple music productions to more complex pieces.🥰
Fun fact - The soundtrack releases a ton of "Reward feelings" for me. I also began to read the "Dune - The Butlerian Jihad" books to it and am now connecting the soundtrack to the story as well.
After listening to Outlier in NMS, I felt like it was one of those soundtracks I could just completely pause what I was doing, and enjoy the moment. The whole soundtrack was so beautifully crafted and completely sold me on the game, even managed to get my sister to try the game out and she's almost sunk more hours into it than I have.
A song I highly recommend is one I personally enjoy from a small indiegame called Skul The Hero Slayer, with the song First Hero Dark Mirror, or as the community has caleld it, Dark Hero, it is my favorite song form the game, with the original First Hero song taking a close second due to just how grandieos they sound and feel like songs meant for those who has toiled and tried their hardest in the game to reach said point.
I love No Man's Sky is one of my favorite games, I suggest you to listen to the soundtrack of the game SPACEPLAN, is a clicker space game but surprisingly the soundtrack is amazing and it fits very well with the space-futuristic theme, specially I suggest the songs "In Orbit", "Dark Matter", "The Descent"
Looking at one of the composed tracks for this game almost feels like a missed opportunity. As good as 65dos are, I think there is something mindblowing in the fact that the band could play the game and still constantly hear new arrangements of the 'atoms' that they provided to procedural generation tools. If it was possible, I'd love to hear you talk to the programmer who handled that (and maybe one of the band members) while watching someone play so you get to hear the creation in real time and can speak about how well it works (or doesn't) and the challenges involved
if you appreciate the sort of tense hopefulness in this, some of the action music in Black mesa, a ground-up remake of the original half life, has some of that, though not as trance-like. I personally suggest Internal Conflict and Forget About Freeman.
I played No Man's Sky at launch, since I stopped playing it, they continued to work on it, and I went back once or twice to try out some of the new stuff they added, like the different game modes and base building, but ultimately stopped more because the game still felt a little... I guess, lifeless would be a good descriptor. You would think that there would at least be a couple cities somewhere, what with the thousands of space stations, outposts and reasonably habitable worlds. But you run into maybe a few hundred of the same three alien species and encounter only a few unique characters no matter how long you play. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the exploration, learning what I could about the lore and even the progression, but once I got all the achievements, I didn't really have much reason to continue.
You should react to more of the new Street Fighter 6 character themes. The devs made them fresh for this game and they just have so much life and characterization behind them. Definately worth a listen.
You should do more Halo reacts, Rain from ODST is amazing, and anything off of the Reach soundtrack would be an awesome listen as well with it being so different from the other game soundtracks
I will never not recommend Asimov from NMS for a review. The first time flying towards a station and having the 'chorus' (For lack of a better term) kick in still gives chills when on a fresh character years on. ua-cam.com/video/ZehJQWR2IIc/v-deo.html
Asimov is my favorite track of this album and I have no clue what this game is about and Idc I’m no gamer but I’ve been a fan of 65days for years and kinda lame that the game gets to much attention when it’s simply 65days making their usual music and some people decide to use it for a video game
Always amazing reaction and song. I would appreciate if you can react to "We Are All One" from Medieval 2 Total War and "Forever" from Rome Total War. Both songs were made by Jeff van Dyck.
I never expected anyone to react to No Man's Sky's soundtrack, yet here we are. A pleasant surprise for sure
NGl, I want more. specially for another of their tracks "Asimov". such an underrated song.

Since you're into contemplative stuff, how about Escape Velocity? ;)
Great video as always!
Thank you for giving this game a shot, it's filled with some wonderful pieces I think you might enjoy
So darn great.
This music reminds me of the sound like how you listen to the ocean, mix with something mysterious, something openness, comforting, but also empty
NO MANS SKY YASSSSSSS
Btw, i recomend Starfield Suite, im so hypeddddddddddddd for the bethesda space game
25 years FINALLY
in game the music is procedural as well !
NMS has an amazing soundtrack that you can just vibe to. Flying through the universe as they fade in and out different parts of the OST according to the current context. Wonderful video, keep it up.
Definitely recommend Asimov from this soundtrack. As well as red parallax
More NMS please :)
Aw! Thank you!!!!
But my hand is cold and steady, for the time has come to die"
- Jordin Kare, "Darkness"
Man. The universe is as dangerous and powerful as it is vast.
... 16 // 16 // 16 // 16 ...
The intro to EOTWS is so beautiful, it encapsulates perfectly the bittersweet feelings of the ending of something that was full of meaning (life, the universe...etc). I'm almost moved to tears everytime I hear it.
You gotta give supermoon a listen. Truly a beautiful song.
To correct you, the song from the E3 trailer was Debutante (still 65DoS) from their previous album We Were Exploding Anyway (and is also an amazing song!)
You arrive in a moment where skies are endless where emotions are settled where everything is at peace in the natural of chaos
you should check out the Main Theme of Super Smash Bros.
Playing NMS while listening to the video ended up flying through an extreme storm as the second part really got going. that was pretty cool.
God, I just fucking love No Man's Sky.
Fun fact - The soundtrack releases a ton of "Reward feelings" for me.
I also began to read the "Dune - The Butlerian Jihad" books to it and am now connecting the soundtrack to the story as well.
I'm not late!!! Finally!!!😊
The fact that this game is from start and to now have a good music despited how long people just regcognize it is amaze me
A song I highly recommend is one I personally enjoy from a small indiegame called Skul The Hero Slayer, with the song First Hero Dark Mirror, or as the community has caleld it, Dark Hero, it is my favorite song form the game, with the original First Hero song taking a close second due to just how grandieos they sound and feel like songs meant for those who has toiled and tried their hardest in the game to reach said point.
Like listening to the rhythm of a running vehicle XD
I love No Man's Sky is one of my favorite games, I suggest you to listen to the soundtrack of the game SPACEPLAN, is a clicker space game but surprisingly the soundtrack is amazing and it fits very well with the space-futuristic theme, specially I suggest the songs "In Orbit", "Dark Matter", "The Descent"
Still hoping for Asimov! Maybe one day…
NMS is a playable prog rock album cover.
Please listen to Super Moon and Asimov! They are amazing!
NMS is my one of my favourites and the only game that made me cry
As big and popular this game is, No Man's Sky is still underrated
Pretty sure, but I could be wrong, this song or at least part of it is still the main menu track or the loading screen track
Day one of asking mr meatball for everyversion of the ark theme but mostly the orginal and extinction
If I may make a suggestion. The main menu theme for the game Blacksad. Excellent song in general.
This soundtrack is 65% why i pre ordered the game…
Grah! Grah!
"blueprint for a slow machine" when
I played No Man's Sky at launch, since I stopped playing it, they continued to work on it, and I went back once or twice to try out some of the new stuff they added, like the different game modes and base building, but ultimately stopped more because the game still felt a little...
Nice
Deploy the Engoodening!
Can you review some of the music from the Pokemon OSTs?
No sorry
You sould definitely listen to supermoon next from no mans sky
Stil praying for Marco to one day listen to Asimov from the NMS soundtrack...
Hope you react to Dark Souls 3's Oceiros the Consumed King some day. That one is among my favourites
I dont know if you have yet but i think it would be cool if you covered some songs from metal gear rising: revengeance
