In my 30 years, a piece of music has never made me cry for a reason other than just feeling sad at the time. This arrangement makes me cry almost uncontrollably every time I listen to it. It's not sadness, or happiness, or any one emotion. It's like the sheer power of these voices building, supporting each other, exploding out into that huge vista of sound with the horns and the choir. It's actually epic. Like being caught in a river of feeling that carries you into a tidal wave of emotion. Overwhelmingly beautiful. It's been years since I played the game, but it takes me right back there. Absolute masterpiece.

I played Journey when it first came out, and I remember being on the message boards for thatgamecompany with other fans trying to figure out the lyrics to I Was Born for This. I speak French, so I was able to contribute a bit. I think the Japanese part is the one we struggle with the most with identifying at the time. The album's been on my regular rotation since - I write for a living, so I like to listen to music while I do, but the lyrics have to be minimal so they don't distract me, and soundtracks are perfect for this.
Because of this, video game soundtracks are the majority of the music I listen to, so I try to go to every video game music show that comes by my city, and I remember the day I learned that Video Games Live would have some music from Journey on their next tour, this was the most excited I've been for an addition to their line up, and hoping it would make the setlist at my show (I think at the time some tracks were rotating in and out based on fan votes?) but I was so thrilled when I heard those first few notes start at the show.

Try to dive into classical music if you haven't already. Video Game Music is a wonderful gateway to it nowadays. Just a friendly advice from someone who recognizes himself in what you wrote (et d'un compatriote en plus ;)
A few years ago, I was driving through Grand Teton National Park, while listening to the Journey soundtrack. I particularly remember listening to this song, while winding through the forested roads, and watching the majestic mountains pass by my window. The music just perfectly fit with my experience there.
You haven't lived until you've driven somewhere otherworldly while listening to I Was Born For This.
Those last few minutes of game play will forever remain a near religious experience for me, thanks to your music.
I remember Austin Wintory! I was a fan of him since i was 3. Thank you. For everything.

I had the good fortune to first play Journey with a group of close friends in 2012 and felt deeply moved by the experience. I knew I'd never played a game like it.
The evocative visuals and narrative-driven gameplay were so gracefully fused with the music. Every player action felt as though it was *exactly* what was supposed to happen, when it was meant to happen. I didn't know the name of the composer or what technology could make such a dynamic score possible, but I felt genuinely *moved* by the sum of the experience.
I'm especially grateful to have first experienced Journey on a shared couch with friends. When our cloaked avatar walked into the light at the top of the mountain, we were silent, completely transfixed by the scene and sublime cello. And after the credits finished, we sat on the title screen and discussed about what we thought it meant for a long while.
As you said in the preview video for Traveler, many people say they wish they could experience Journey again for the first time. I'm among those and have made a point over the last ten years to seek out friends who hadn't yet played Journey and find a way to play it with them.
Last fall, I was able to reserve a movie theater screen and play Journey with a group of eight; none had heard of Journey previously. It's still fun to watch people interact with the game - to playfully glide down the sand slopes, to hide from the sea creatures that attack, to call out to a partner while ascending the vertical temple - and to listen as they puzzled over what the game was about.
And as our cloaked avatar was gently let down onto the mountain as the orchestral highs receded, the collective excitement in the room grew quiet. There was complete silence as we faded into the light, and a collective exhale when vocals finally appeared in I Was Born For This.
Ten years on, the experience of Journey still captured our attention and hearts. It's a beautiful game that is, I think, only more beautiful when shared with friends.
Austin, thank you so much for helping make such an experience possible, and for continuing to keep the spirit of Journey alive now with Traveler. 💛

I cannot explain how much I love this piece of music. Journey was the closest thing to a spiritual experience I had from playing a video game and the music played a huge role in that.

Aaand I cried again to this. Hearing french like this always gets to me in the context of this piece, of this game. The invincible power to bring about generosity in the world and in each other, that's what this is to me. Truly Austin Wintory and all of these musicians were born for this. Each note elevates us and comforts us in hardship and doubt.
It touches something in me of the confidence that falters but never dies, not as long as people like this exist to make music. I believe the word is "hope".

I've cherished this game and soundtrack for so 11 years, and only today I found out the meaning to the lyrics in this beautiful song. Journey and its soundtrack always allow me to connect with my emotions; I feel this music heals me of my wounds and elevates my soul into love and understanding. Thank you!!
I cannot believe I didn’t hear about this when it initially came out! So many of my favorite musicians and singers! It made my morning train ride to work just a little bit more bearable!

I think nothing is more rewarding in a game that a music score made with so much passion and the feeling of accomplished you get when you complete it, follow by each step you did on it, is an unique feeling you really can't forget, really make you tear up each time you got to remember it.

Fantastic piece of relaxing music. Tina Guo is amazing in cello. The combining of different frases from litterature from world was amazing. I enjoyed the ancient Greek part from Illiad by Homer. I'm Greek , what else. The orchestra and the voices as the soloists part was amazing. ❤

This is SO powerful. Seeing everyone come together for this made it that much more impactful. The session musicians kind of reminded me of the gameplay itself. Each recording alone, but coming across and interweaving with others as it went along like in the game.

Because I first played their respective games around the same time, this and Bear McCreary's title theme for God of War sit in my mind as two sides of the same coin when it comes to definitively epic experiences. One ethereal and soaring, one grim and relentless, both masterfully crafted and executed.
And it's always a treat to watch composers stand before an orchestra and bring their music to life. Bravo.

The music is actually what first drew me to Journey, and I was amazed while playing it at how well it complemented the story and gameplay. Now, years later, I still learn more about the music. e.g. I never knew there were multiple different languages in this track! I love it.

This is my first time actually seeing the the lyrics and where they are from. What an amazing choice to use different lines from different literature in different languages. Somehow, they tell a full story. What a great parallel to Journey too. People from all over, working towards one goal. Even if we don’t understand each others’ voice, we know their message. Breathtaking work.
It's impossible not to get moved by this. What a magnificent collective of skilled and passionate people. I love your soundtracks, Austin, but Journey will always have the biggest spot in my heart.
