I wanted to point out something I didn’t know about until recently. I installed a 4tb WD sn850x NVME into my OG Ally and noticed far more wattage being used and a less play time. I’ve never thought of NVME power consumption because it’s always been in my desktop but I found out that drive could use 8+ watts at peak and even a watt or two at idle. I’m using a Hynix p31 gold in my Ally X and even though it’s only 2Tb, it is one of the most power efficient NVME drives available. Basically, your NVME could skew wattage use and play time.

Bazzite suspend on ROG Ally X is experiencing issues at the moment. When waking, controls are not re-enabling, sometimes requiring a reboot. So it's not perfect, but the team is aware of it.
This might just be the video that finally makes me sell all my old retro games that are boxed up and packed away as I have nowhere to keep them in my house and use the money to buy an ROG Ally X. Basically every system is all playable on one portable device and I can actually play the games instead of having to store them in my attic. The fact that the ROG Ally X will also double as a PC for me to upgrade my 5 year old laptop, is also part of my consideration. All Xbox and PlayStation ports also on one system is actually mind blowing to me as an old skool 44 year old console gamer. What a time to be alive 😂 Great work on all your videos, Retro Game Corps.
I think you want to wait for the next decently priced mainstream well known handheld that needs 32gb of ram minimum which beats the rog ally x then we are talking, 24gb of the fast ram just does not cut it, look at all the other non-mainstream handhelds that are out such as the ayaneo 2s which is expensive in price that already has a minimum of 32gb of ram.

I don't own one of these handhelds yet, but I'm in the market. Battery time is about the least important thing for me because the only time it would be on battery is when I was transporting it from one of my play areas (couch, bed, back porch, office) to another. Three minutes is probably more than sufficient, and matches about the max time my Switch is offer off AC power.
I just went on youtube on I see your new video and ETA's new video. Making that decision of who to watch was extremely diff- easy 😊 And then I chose you.
I love emulation with this powerful hardware its just a literal time travel tool for my inner child. I could scan through my entire childhood until the lastest tripple A games. Lol
Russ is a Pedro The Lion fan? Guess there is proof he CAN get cooler (but I need to know his breakdown of the PTO, David Bazan, Seldom, Headphones, Overseas, Paperback rankings) Anyways, great content, great shirt. I'm gonna grab a drink, a snack and say "yeah, man, I wanna watch this video"
Okay, here goes. Bear in mind that I left WA state to join the Navy in 2000 so I have a lot of nostalgia for the old stuff 1. PTL, most especially Winners Never Quit and Control, and The Only Reason I Feel Secure. I do enjoy Whole EP and It's Hard to Find a Friend but they haven't aged as well for me. I don't like Achilles Heel very much, it's too haphazard although its opening and closing tracks are some of my all-time favorites. I listen to the new albums but the songwriting doesn't have that creative spark like it used to; the songs feel very cathartic for David, and I am glad he's making them, but their unflinching autobiographical nature aren't as relatable to me. 2. Headphones next, even though I wasn't super hip on them at the time of release, I can listen to it all the time. 3. David Bazan, especially Fewer Moving Parts and Strange Negotiations. The electronic releases never really caught on for me, even though I like their overall tone. 4. Overseas, I am a huge Bedhead fan so this was an amazing collaboration. I hope we see that elusive album #2 someday 5. Seldom was great, although let's be honest, just the first track on their first EP is a true banger, everything else is good but a little droopy. I wish Yuuki would make more music with vocals, because he was always really good at that. 6. I also liked some of the other Bazan projects, like Coolidge (I'm also a big Damien Jurado fan) and his drumming on Unwed Sailor's first EP, Undertow Orchestra was kind of cool too. 7. I would put Lo Tom at the bottom, it never really jived with me. I've tried many times but TW Walsh's songwriting style doesn't really catch my ear and I can hear his influence in all their work (and Achilles Heel, tbh) I don't know what Paperback is, please enlighten me!
@@RetroGameCorps If I could high five someone through the internet, it would be you, sir! (Born and partly raised in Bellevue/Kirkland) Not only is this an excellent ranking, but you got the Bedhead/New Year (had to) drop in there, which is icing on the cake (I grabbed the Hell House soundtrack they did at a Chicago show in....2004?). The Headphones placement is choice cause it's such a departure that also is rooted directly between the Pedro & Bazan mindsets. The earlier Bazan stuff I like cause you get that "working through" stuff and creatively is interesting. Paperback is kind of a lark, in a way? It's a solo period where he was performing under that name. The famous "power out" cover of Pakt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Can was from when he was touring as Paperback. Although, the random Man In Me cover he did in an alleyway is great Thank you so much for replying, Russ. This is the highlight of a very long week.
Thanks for all the work on these in-depth reviews! Question: do you play all these games for the battery life amounts you have listed? OR do you play for a shorter time, look at the remaining battery life, and then extrapolate the full game battery life from there?
No purpose really. Ally X has superior performance and like 50% larger battery. The price also reflects this, depends on you if you want to shell out for one. (I don't like windows handhelds)
Appreciate all your detailed reviews. I'm looking at getting a handheld primarily for emulation but also looking to play Monster Hunter Wilds when it releases next year. Which handheld would you recommend (steamdeck, claw, ROG, Legion, Something else?)?
Russ, now that windows handhelds like the rog ally and such are becoming more popular ever thought about doing a video on how to setup ps3 emulation on them?
This is great. I'm going to stick with the Steam Deck ecosystem because I really like everything about it, but I'm kinda taking this as a preview of what the next Steam Deck model will probably be able to do. Having most/all of 360/PS3 playable is going to be amazing. Also PGR4 was one of the earliest games in my career. Love seeing it get some attention
Hey Russ I saw that you very recently did a video on the Beelink Ser 5600. Amazon has a 5700u and 5800h model Beelink mini PC both on sale for $339. The 5700u has 32gb ram and the 5800h only has 16gb. Both are 1TB storage. I was wondering which GPU is stronger because I don't know what the U or H designation means. Since they are both the same price I figure I can do a cheap ram swap later if the 5800h is better to have in the long run. I'm guessing the mobo is the same for all of these since they are all Beelink. I don't know if you have any intentions of doing a future video on these devices but regardless I know that your are the best person to ask. Mahalo for your time.
I recall the OG Ally at launch had sleep/hibernate issues with some games. Is that fixed, my current benchmark for success is the Steam Deck. Love the sleep mode on that.

Lol
Great video, like always! I want to get one, but I'd rather wait in order to get it for a better price!
Russ is a Pedro The Lion fan? Guess there is proof he CAN get cooler (but I need to know his breakdown of the PTO, David Bazan, Seldom, Headphones, Overseas, Paperback rankings)
Anyways, great content, great shirt. I'm gonna grab a drink, a snack and say "yeah, man, I wanna watch this video"
Okay, here goes. Bear in mind that I left WA state to join the Navy in 2000 so I have a lot of nostalgia for the old stuff
I hope we see that elusive album #2 someday
I've tried many times but TW Walsh's songwriting style doesn't really catch my ear and I can hear his influence in all their work (and Achilles Heel, tbh)
I don't know what Paperback is, please enlighten me!
@@RetroGameCorps If I could high five someone through the internet, it would be you, sir! (Born and partly raised in Bellevue/Kirkland)
Not only is this an excellent ranking, but you got the Bedhead/New Year (had to) drop in there, which is icing on the cake (I grabbed the Hell House soundtrack they did at a Chicago show in....2004?).
Although, the random Man In Me cover he did in an alleyway is great
Thank you so much for replying, Russ. This is the highlight of a very long week.
champions of norath brings back good memories
Thanks for all the work on these in-depth reviews! Question: do you play all these games for the battery life amounts you have listed? OR do you play for a shorter time, look at the remaining battery life, and then extrapolate the full game battery life from there?
The Last Remnant actually got a PC port that fixed a ton of stuff, it's a proper hidden gem imo, the original 360 ver was a bit jank
Given some time we will need the Ultimate Showdown Video: Steam OLED VS Asus Rog Ally X
I'm getting this now. Retro games up to PS3 and 360 sweet as
Russ, now that windows handhelds like the rog ally and such are becoming more popular ever thought about doing a video on how to setup ps3 emulation on them?
I have the SD OLED but I kinda like better performance. Get the X or wait for an Ally 2?
Ps2 and ps3 emulation on this are incredible. Basically every game I’ve ever loved is 2-4 hours at a time
Apparantly there's now AMD Fluid Motion Frames. Can you try emulate a few demanding games with that feature?
love the new camera/4k res, looks markedly better on my TV
Got my carrot cake and coffee ☕ ready to watch. Feels good to have my X finally in hand
Bazzite is 99 % of steam os , just buy a powerfull handheld and install it
Hey Russ, can you make a video about BFI in OLED, like SteamDeck and its differences? Tks for the great work!
I have bazzite on my OG Ally, it's beyond awesome
so how was MGS4 on the original Rog Ally with the Z1 Extreme ? is it worth spending the 865 dollars for the Ally X ?
Thoughts on launchbox? I never see people talk about that retro gaming
I’m just wondering when and where I can get the 8oWH battery so that I may upgrade my original ROG ally. Also, thanks for another great video Russ!
