Are these Xbox Numbers Good or Bad?

- Microsoft has released the official sales figures for Q1 of the calendar year and Xbox had a very interesting quarter. And depending on how you look at the numbers, it was either exceptional or downright discouraging.

I think it'll take time. Seeds have been planted, Bethesda's just starting to bear fruit. Other companies acquired are just stating to do the same. This June is going to be exciting and I think the growth reflects that.
> Bethesda's just starting to bear fruit
Gonna need to see the numbers on this one
🤣🤣
@@TheKingOfSpainwhile I agree numbers are needed you only have to look at increase in sales of Fallout games and the overall success that Starfield is. Probably millions of sales on the Fallout series games since the show came out and these are games theyve probably already made money back on/pure profit now.
Worth noting they only JUST folded Bethesda into Xbox leadership under Matt Booty. They also only just firmly established Microsoft Gaming as a unified entity comprising ABK, XGS, and BGS. Before Bethesda was just a third party MS was fully funding that sometimes answered to Phil. I don't think we'll truly see ABK and Bethesda feel like first party until next gen at the earliest with how long game development has become and how much the scene is changing, but there is insane potential.
4% down without ABK I think is just coming off from pandemic high, a correction more than a trend. ABK should bring permanent returns.
ABK is “propping” things, but they have quite a lot of content this year NOT associated to ABK this year and we will see that boosted by year’s end.
Need that call of duty content past & future before I see them increasing massively.
Next quarter should be higher with Xbox games on PS5 and Fallout surge
Why would I buy an Xbox if their games are on Playstation? How is that incentive....
@@Alien_isolationist Game Pass. Wanna better deal? Want to play Xbox games when they actually launch? Get a Xbox
Plus the 4 games that went over aren’t system sellers anymore.
Xbox sent 4 dead games to PlayStation. While you’re still paying full price, we’re getting the full experience with Game pass.
@@Alien_isolationistWe know you like paying $69.99 for games but we dont. Even if all Xbox games went to Sony I would still choose Xbox if all those games are on gamepass.
@@kr1dfy453you comment is exactly why PS games won't go the other way and why 3rd party devs might not port their games to XB either... What then?
It will take time and games to fulfil their Game Pass goals, one new game every quarter or so. Microsoft isn’t stupid and I’m confident they will succeed.
I dunno. For every forward step they take great pride in also having jumped back 2. Management has to STFU because every time Phil speaks it makes things worse, and they need to spend a HEAP on marketing. I see PS5 stuff everywhere, TV, cinemas, bus stops etc, but Xbox must be using those special invisible billboards. People seem surprised when they find out xbox still exists.
Gamepass hasn't been growing for years. The Majority of people still buy their games.
“Microsoft isn’t stupid.” This remains to be seen
@@SilverJoystix What’s Microsoft’s net worth? They may make mistakes, as we all do but they have a lot more money than you or I.
1 big game every quarter, well they missed this quarter. They've had nothing big since STARFIELD in October. That's why too long... And if HELL BLADE isn't the hit it's propped up to be.. Then what?
On my Xbox series X I just beat tails of iron. And now I'm playing resident evil evaluation. Next will be another crabs treasure.
Tails of Iron 2 coming this year
XBOX hardware revenue being down isn't surprising. They're still selling the XSX and the XSS at the same price points since 2020. This is the first generation, maybe ever, where the base consoles, PS, and XBOX are still priced high, even in their fourth year. PS is at least selling bundle deals. MS? Not so much.
By now, we should have an elite or custom system at the $500 price point, with a major title packaged in, while the base systems drop $100 or more. It hasn't happened yet, and until it does, console sales will continue to get dragged. Even Sony cut their 2024 predictions by 5 million units.
Hey if I held out this long, but want a Series X to play my HUGE physical library, should I buy a NEW one for $440 now, or wait until the June showcase, maybe they announce a price cut??
@ThePalePatriot I'd wait. XBOX is teasing new hardware, and typically, with that, you get a price drop and deals.
What you said is true BUT there console sales tracking behind the XBone isn't a good thing.
@benjamincurtis1412 The X1 had a price cut a half year in, and by its 4th year, they had a refresh, plus a redesign that had another price drop. Without price drops and redesigns/refresh, sales will lag behind. The PS5 is suffering the same issues compared to the PS4. The only consistent is the Switch.
@@eastside49er but the PS5 is tracking ahead or is on par with the PS4... Its not lagging behind it...
It is irrelevant now when considering a headline with or without ABK. They are a part of MS so it’s pointless comparing it to without ABK
This just means they made the right move with the acquisition
Let the games fly for Xbox. They can share what they have to but spam the market with other games. Nobody
really wants more than the X series yet because most the games do not even use that power.
Hey if I held out this long, but want a Series X to play my HUGE physical library, should I buy a NEW one for $440 now, or wait until the June showcase, maybe they announce a price cut??
The longer you wait, the more sales you miss... so I'd recommend buying sooner rather than later.
(Word of warning: Backup any video clips you take on the Xbox..)
the Series X has gone on insane sales already and any digital or pro edition won't be good enough to offset that price. I'd say wait until November/December time if you just want a sale. I'd really have bought one last year. Usually June only sees games on sale and like a Series S Game Pass bundle.
Something that's pretty interesting is that I frequently see people mention that companies don't need to "grow" anymore. Like that was a common argument against the ABK acquisition... and yet we get to the earnings report and that's all people care about. Them being down 4% YOY without ABK in theory shouldn't be that big of a deal. Overall profits and revenues haven't dropped. Without ABK operating expenses also would have decreased YOY and they're still doing much better than previously generations. Console sales aren't even that bad. Yeah they're declining, but its four years in and that's pretty normal. They're also about halfway from their peak and we see similar declines for PS and Nintendo (they just have higher peaks). Really Xbox is in less trouble than the console market as a whole considering there aren't any new console gamers and we're starting to see competition from the cloud and mobile markets (iPhones and iPads are literally running major console games now, poorly but still AC mirage on a device that sells more in a year than a PS in a lifetime is gonna be insane).
Console sales are not the driving force anymore. Hell they were selling them at a loss for the longest time up until late last year. Digital goods and services are where the money is at. Microsoft is playing chess while Sony keeps playing checkers.
The massive layoffs across the industry and post-ABK merger are forcing both MS and Sony to re-evaluate their strategies moving forward. MS is all in on subscription services (Game Pass), but they also know what's happening with streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, etc. They're flatlining (no growth; losing subs) and in trouble. Sony is trying to keep exclusives tied to hardware, but even they are conceding with more titles coming to PC a lot sooner like with Helldivers 2. Coming off the pandemic bubble is forcing everybody to look at where real growth for the industry is going to be, and it's not where many had originally thought four years (or more), ago. This is why there is a big shift from previously leaked document strategies, and it's anybody's guess going forward.
I hope people do realize tht abk is Xbox now . I don’t understand the without abk Xbox would have been flat argument. Its like evaluating Sony’s gaming services without insomniac.
It's only different because it's Xbox and people want to push a different narrative...it's lazy and it's only to get clicks
It's different because the money SONY paid for INSOM they already made back. INSOM was very very cheap. $229M... They spent more money on making SM2 than they did for buying ND... I'd stick to using BUNGIE in your argument as they haven't made back the money for that deal yet.
It’s because they’re still new.
This is the first earnings report that they’re including ABK numbers in.
Of course it’s going to be mentioned
@@benjamincurtis1412 I mean... no? Making any acquisition is an investment. If a company DOESN'T make that money back is a very clear sign of that comapny's ability to conduct business. Regardless the acquisition happened and the investment is added to the company as an asset. If Sony or Microsoft made an aquisition and don't make the money back that's also a way of measuring the company's overall worth. For example, I'd personally focus more on the fact that ABK brought operating expenses up over 40% and they'd otherwise be down a few percent without ABK (though likely thats part of the layoffs and downsizing we've seen following the aquisition to offset that). A good example is AT&T buying WB. That was a massive massive purchase and one AT&T took out heavy loans for. Even before money was made back it was their responsibility to use WB to grow and they made decisions for WB in that purpose. However, at the end of the day they never made the money back (and still haven't) and had to cut their losses and spin off WB. That was still important to their story as a company because during that time WB was AT&T. Similarly everything with Embracer. Its also worth noting Microsoft paid for ABK in cash, not stock like companies typically do in a big purchase.
Like in as simple terms as possible, if I buy a car on a loan or in cash upfront its mine either way. I make decisions to make that car useful for me and might see a return on my investment (probably indirectly because its a car), but I'm never just given the money I spent back and its not like its not mine until I think I earned what I spent back on it.
Xbox needs to focus making great exclusives
I guess ABK was a necessary investment purely for Xbox. But if Microsoft doesn't get the numbers they want in return they can very easily pull the plug on Xbox and move everything over to Windows.
I mean they sell half as much as their competitors Sony & Nintendo but I guess there's a market for it they keep pumpin out consoles.
Well, bringing Activision in was part of Xbox's strategy for the future. So it doesn't really matter most of the revenue growth comes from them. It's all one big thing now
the last two moths, I've been playing my Xbox Series S a lot more than PS5...
Now that they opened the precedent of exclusive games coming to the rival platforms, I imagine console sales are going down the well from now on!
Do you think the Series X will get a price cut announced at the June Showcase? I want a SX, can get new for $440, but worry it goes lower......
@@ThePalePatriot I think so, the console will lose value fast from now on...
No new Microsoft game in the last quarter so of course there earning are stagnated
Only console war ponies will think that Xbox is failing or going to fail.
Not really when you hide your numbers. It's usually because they're not good. Or trending the way you want them too
The numbers are right there in the report. Do you mean console sales? At this point they don't seem to be the focus anymore which is wise as that battle is lost. Revenue and services is clearly the way to go and perhaps the consoles will continue to sell flat but steady once the ABK portfolio starts showing up.

I absolutely refuse to buy the XBOX Series S since it's digital only. They need to have an option of gamers to play games with physical disc even for their Series S like disc version or at least external disc drive support. The situation is so bad now in Singapore that none of the game shops are bringing in physical XBOX Games. I have to go on Amazon US to get the newer games nowadays to play on my XBOX Series X, XBOX One S and XBOX One X.
Those XBOX numbers are actually both, good and bad. Hardware down and software up. One counters the hell out the other. So, it's a win for MS.
If it wasn’t for abk it’d be embarrassing
Good thing it counts right?
Curious how embarrassing PS will do with the closing of studios, game cancellations, and layoffs this year. Let's not mention poor games sales from most of their 2024 exclusives and the lack of 1st party games.
I don’t think this guy actually knows what he’s reading lol. The only thing that changed within the quarter was the release of COD the end of the previous quarter. No games for Xbox has been released yet. So obviously the company they bought to help with the revenue will be helping with the revenue lol. It’s like taking out insomniac for PS and then saying “well spiderman 2 sales are the only reason why they made money last quarter of 2023”… clearly, that’s the only thing that released lol. A quarter is 4 months . Tf is going to change in 4 months. Also clearly last quarter Xbox was at #4 for Microsoft revenue according to the chart he provided at 3,000 but this quarter shot up yo 5,000. It wasn’t #3, it most certainly didn’t drop, and everything he said durian that slider was actually stupid because it didn’t even line up with the proof he had. He contradicted himself lol
Im a gamepass subscribers who has no interest in Anything Activision, I wonder where I'm counted.
Nowhere I suppose.
It's a positive quarter no matter how people want to spend it. It's 62% Growth is great in any business. It's only suspect because it's Microsoft. They haven't released anything so why are people expecting more??
That's ABK addition. Xbox declined bad overall🤢
ABK is not propping up the Xbox ecosystem if they aren’t releasing exclusives or even on gamepass. Becoming a huge third party software house is not what people mean when they want xbox to succeed.

Microsoft loves to talk a lot and say nothing. Your day to have Activision they be in the dirt
Numbers are great. Microsoft did not become trillion dollar from hardware.. It's a software giant putting their Xbox games on all devices. This year will be huge for them.
Microsoft is ok. Xbox isn't. What makes them xbox games? Why not just call them Microsoft games at this point.
@thelastofus2872 Xbox doing ok..

The discless Xbox is gonna sell even less.
Especially with a PS5 pro coming out.
Also, they have dropped the prices massively on the X and Series S.
You could buy the S for $120 for 3 months leading up to Christmas.
What really?
1st😁
@Brad Sams,
Lol, you have no idea of what you're attempting to talk about.
If you lead Playstation players to believe that all your games are going to Playstation, why would they get an xbox,if you asked me,Microsoft put their selves in that situation, because there's actually ppl and xbox influencers that left because of that, you have to come out there and say our block buster titles will not go to Playstation, ive heard Playstation players saying ps pro will play gears and halo better,so what did they expect, they were warned ,but nooo!,big money over there, this is the year that Microsoft should have held back, especially like how there's no first party games for Playstation this year🤨
That was the sony fanboys saying that all xbox games would be coming to playstation and that xbox would become fully 3rd party which I dont see happening and xbox themselfs said they arnt doing that... so far anyways
@De1usionsofGrandeur they said that, but by putting 4 games on Playstation, even prominent xbox influencers are saying they're not sure if game is coming to Playstation, and all Phil does is talk about putting games on every device every screen,he's damaging the same brand he built back from the ground up,sonys struggling right now,if they only had faith in their own eco system, ppl would believe in them,I watched even an xbox show, where Playstation gamers said they were saving for a series x,but now seeing that xbox putting games on Playstation, they're canceling their purchase of xboxes
@@nicholasellis7494 no he says that every screen is an xbox not every device... which is true across pc, mobile, xbox, and even xcloud on meta VR headsets you can indeed play xbox on every screen.... but he should say is that.. no more games will go to playstation....till playstation games start coming to xbox.. that would make it clear that nothing will be changing at all less sony themselfs make a move
Except they didnt sell them for $1 per console. 31% decline in sales does eqaute to nearly 31% decline in hardware sales cuz the hardware sales werent that big a discount stop trying to change te narrative to fit your end goal.
I don’t care about financials. No games. No reason for excitement
Xbox made more internal games last year compared to PS and will do it again this year
😂, no games…how does this statement make any sense?
@@hiruu - It does when it applies to Sony. They have no 1st party games until Next year.
@@hiruuIt makes sense because Xbox has no games
@@GamingTalk-cl7xjOkay goober
Why would introducing a less capable diskless Series X do anything to increase sales? It seems like a pretty terrible strategy to introduce a worse console at the exact same time that Sony is releasing the PS5 Pro.
People need to stop lying to themselves about the state of Xbox.
Xbox is pretty much dead here in Europe. Its all Playstation and Switch.
Physical games are very hard to find. Have to import most of the stuff from the U.S which is very costly :/
Xbox already dead console
I've never seen a gaming platform have so many people making excuses for its bad sales numbers, I've never seen a gaming platform holder use so many vague metrics and I've never seen a gaming platform with sales THIS bad. This can't be a good sign.
@AgentZeroNine1 - If you haven't seen any of these things from any Game company that ever existed then you must be very young. I have been gaming since the 70's and I've seen worst than what you're talking about.
Sony has also lost a ton of money ($30 Billion in a years time), and yet no one talks about it. Sony also have to face an avalanche of Lawsuits coming their way from ..The UK, Germany, Romania, France ..etc... in the Billions and yet people ignore it .. thinking that all of that would just go away.
Talking about BAD sales what numbers did FoamStars, Destruction AllStars, Babylon's Fall, GodFall, Forspoken, etc.... ? I mean there are "BAD games" from all Gaming companies. No one is exempt from that.
🤔
I agree with you except for never seeing a gaming platform with sales this bad. I've seen far worse in my lifetime. Wii U, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Saturn were far worse even adjusting for their eras.
This guy must be pretty young to make this statement.
Nothing wrong with that, of course. Everybody starts off young.
But this young cat definitely doesn't have the knowledge-base necessary to formulate an informed opinion on this topic.
