If I had to guess why people are enjoying this game more now than 25 years ago is because you don't know what you have until it's gone. This type of game would have been par for the course when it came out but nowadays with every shooter being a mediocre new iteration of the same shooters we've been playing since 2010, this game seems like a breath of fresh air in comparison despite it's age.

I think the compass is a great inclusion for new players, we don’t have to use it if we don’t want to. My son loves this game and he doesn’t get frustrated because he doesn’t get lost when using the compass. Getting lost and turned around does lessen the experience. Back in the day I stopped playing doom 2, quake 2 and unreal because I would just be going around in circles (I have completed them since) but something as simple as a waypoint when you want it is such a massive life improvement to the game and I think this is where people would say oh old fps games arnt linear, they are there’s still a set path to get to the exit, it’s just the amount of times you got turned around

  • @roguerifter9724

I think the compass actually encourages exploration. Players can go off the main path and not have to worry because if they get lost they have a tool to guide them to where they need to go in order to continue.

I really don't know how he can handwave the compass as "that throwback shooter babymode handholding item" when not only did it save me from running around for an hour in empty hallways (he criticized doom for THAT exact flaw...?), it also pushed this version of Quake 2 away from the main thing 'legendary gamers of old' also hated about one of those old games... Hexen. Getting lost in that game was a nightmare, and I imagine with a compass like this, it would have been a LOT better.

@@umbaupause The maps aren't that big. Anyone who gets "lost for an hour" in Quake 2 has the attention span of a goldfish. Seriously, the maps are TINY, especially when compared to the mazes of Wolfenstein 3D or Doom. Quake 2 is a fairly linear experience. Its silliness squared to say that you could get lost for hours.

Yeah Quake 2 has become my favourite in the last 2 years.
Playing the GOG Quad Damage version with YamagiQ2 sourceport, 8x AA, Ground Zero AI mod, gl_texturemode gl_nearest_mipmap_linear and gl3_particle_square 1, Weapons Reanimation Pack, original HUD and SImple Quake Launcher 2 is probably the best way to play campaign and mods.

I don't understand why people find the compass controversial at all. A.) It is not enabled by default or forced on you in any way, you specifically have to go out of your way to use it. B.) The remastered package contains the OG game without it which you can play instead. It's one thing when the game design forces you to use various crutches such as Ubisoft's X-Ray vision for highlighting objects because their design is really bad at differentiating between mundane backdrops and important stuff, but you do not need to use it at all in Q2RE.
The moaning about it makes even less sense when, in the age of internet, you can literally google a walkthrough of pretty much any game. The compass helps with basically erasing the necessity of getting out of the game to figure out a way to progress. And anyways, if someone does not want to spend time exploring every nook and crany of the game, they will not do it - compass or no compass.

    • @NiktoTheNobody
      @NiktoTheNobody Рік тому +7

@@genitalgrinder5704 I don't see a problem if it's implemented in a way that does not force the player to use / engage with such mechanics. Gaming is much bigger than it used to be with now being prevalent in pretty much all age groups, and, well - a lot of people are going to be bad at games - 49.99% statistically, practically a lot more than that, only the top 10% in any game can really be called good. A lot of older people are also playing games than even 10 years back and you simply can't fool age - your reaction time, short term memory and spatial awareness ain't gonna be anything to brag about either when you hit 60+, lol.
That being said, if the feel of the game is changed drastically and the original game gets removed from sale, that really is stupid. Same for any dumbing down of multiplayer.

I remember back tracking several levels trying to find the path to continue thanks in no small part to each area feeling the same to the one before and after it. I always really loved Quake II, having got a copy back when it was a recent release. I played through it many times as a preteen up through my early 20s, always unable to understand the hate, while also having a similar affection for Quake I.
It was only when I revisited it last year that my feelings iced a little bit. I hadn't played the game to any meaningful extent for the better part of a decade at this point. The result? Realizing that pacing in parts of the main game is a slog, the enemies are kind of boring to fight (hard mode doesn't help a lot with that, and nightmare is a console command only mode that is kind of broken in that the monsters just stand in one spot constantly spamming you, they're easy to deal with but not interesting.)
The Reckoning is forgettable, and Ground Zero is just poorly designed with the turret nonsense. I'll probably never play either of those again.
I warmed up again with the remaster for a few reasons: The updated enemy AI and balance tweaks have made the game significantly more interesting to play again. The Berserker is actually an interesting enemy now instead of classic Doom pinky demon behavior that the game refuses to spam at you so it never becomes dangerous, as just one example.
Add to that the Call of The Machine map set is fantastic, it's not afraid to throw a ton of stuff at you at once, probably to an extent that would have made game performance unacceptable had it been attempted on common hardware in the late 90s.
So yes, overnight my feelings on it improved, but only on this new release. I don't think I'll spend much time playing the original version again. Even if this release lacked the new Machine Game's content it would still be a lot more fun to me than original Quake II.

From the simple addition of crouching to the complexities of bunnyhopping, chained jumps, leaping higher up ramps, etc., Quake 2 brought massive control enhancements over Quake 1 to the point of making the original feel stiff and archaic. It's like it was carefully tuned to allow good players to fly around maps at insane speeds; I can't think of another game that feels quite like getting those giant leaps off the trees in "jungle" in Action Quake 2!
Which is something this video doesn't even address: Quake 2 had a prodigious modding scene, bringing the world everything from simple adjustments like Lithium (an upgrade that gives you an offhand laser-grapple) to crazy stuff like Action Quake 2 (the predecessor to Counterstrike, but more insane - check it out!)

I think it's due to Q2 being more naturalistic, which scored it points in 1997 but isn't fashionable today, whereas Q1 in retrospect is a lot more unique.
Doom 3 has seen this effect too - I've been around the block a bit, and only in the last few years have I started to hear criticism of the shotgun. I was absolutely floored when people knocked the BFG Edition for having the mounted flashlight, when the main criticism of the base game was "there's no duct tape on Mars!" It's not like BFG Edition is forcing you to have the mounted flashlight on at all times... players can decide to turn it off when in combat.

As someone who grew up with Doom, Quake and Quake 2, I reckon part of the pushback to Quake 2 was that, at the time, it lacked the scrappy creativity that the likes of Romero brought to the table. Quake 1 has a very raw feel to it, whereas Quake 2 feels very polished, sometimes to its own detriment. It probably also doesn't help that the game kinda ended up being the progenitor of brown/grey aesthetic we'd see in so many military shooters going forward.
Not to say it is completely brown/grey, but from what I remember, a lot of the colour palette is pretty muted, compared to Quake 1's slightly more vibrant colours. It also didn't help, at least for me, that the hub sectioning of the game was so confusing at the time. Might honestly go back to it now though, given the enhanced edition has a compass.

Ive always loved quake 2 mostly due to it being the first fully 3d fps i had ever played. I played it in 97 and I was only 7 years old and it blew me away it was the coolest and scariest thing i had ever seen. After i got my own pc capable of running it i played many hours on gamespy3d playing the awesome mods like digital paint 2 and weapons of destruction.

Dude, i'm looking at the map level designs in your gameplay for Quake 2 and i shocked myself. I started picturing you holding a plasma rifle or something and said out loud. "Hold on!! All you need is some forerunner texture skins to the walls floors and ceilings, and the map designs of Quake 2 looks like something out of Halo Combat Evolved !!!"
Which made me say now, Id honestly be happy to let future Halo games be made by this company!
Edit: so long as they can honor what makes Halo's old original nostalgic sandbox's, Ai, original story's, etc. Unique.

From the sound of it Quake 2 is the best Doom game. Joking aside I shared the same issue before I played Quake 2 and falling in love with it. However Quake 1 is still my favorite. The weapons in it are completely utilitarian and not much variety but the enemy’s man. Out of all the classic id games quake 1 really made me pay attention to what’s was on the chess board. Pretty much everything after the introduction of the ogre was hard hitting and demanded your attention. It felt more like controlling a stressful situation than just mowing down enemies which is fun but I like the gameplay of Quake more. It makes you anxious for fun.

Nice review, with all respect I had the opposite reaction when replaying Quake 2. I remember my dad buying it for me when it came out and was super excited. Yet replaying it now after having a blast with the Quake 1 remaster I find it's just bland and disappointing. It has aged extremely poorly in my eyes. I was surprised at how little nostalgia I had for it on replaying. I replayed Quake 1 many times and loved the atmosphere and lack of hit scanners (the shambler being an exception obviously). As examples Quake 1 required skill to avoid enemies such as fiends and the ogre's grenades, Quake 2 had the mutants with their comparatively poor movement and animation (massive downgrade in every way from the fiend) and the gunner which literally just spams infinite rapid fire grenades all over the floor (with drastically crappier physics than Quake 1 for some reason). Movement was objectively worse than Quake 1 which is a staple for speedrunners unlike this sequel. Quake 2 definitely needed the compass - some of the levels were really tedious and it was very easy to get lost in the mission packs and not hard to get lost in main game (e.g. the prison). It had its moments, but it doesn't compare to Quake 1 or Doom. It's in the same category as Doom 3 - not terrible but definitely flawed.

Heh. I have played Quake 2 many, many times way before I played Quake for the first time. I just grew up with it. I played the demo over and over and I loved the dark alien industrial atmosphere. The music albeit amazing on it's own unfortunately kills this horror vibe to the game. One thing I'd like to do at some point is create a new soundtrack for Quake 2 that's be more rooted in Quake I than heavy metal Doom. I would want to see how Quake 2 could feel if the music was there to amplify the horror aspects, not the action aspects.
I think that if "the internet does a 180" on something, that basically means that 90% of people had no opinion and were just parroting what boom-shoot-tubers told them.
I never understood this hate for Quake 2, and I agree with you that it would probably be better off not being associated with Quake from the start. That has just set people's expectations a bit off.
As for the compass - I think it's a great thing. I played Quake 2 a lot but I still get lost in it, especially the jail levels, and the hub world early in the game. There's so much backtracking and with all the secret hunting I always do in this game I keep getting lost and wanted back and forth, growing frustrated. The compass would let me just get back on track.
What's wrong with someone being able to sprint through the game? I'm pretty sure they will realize they're leaving a lot of good stuff behind, going so fast, yet they will still experience like good 70% of the game.
BTW, I love that in Quake 2 there are entire secret LEVELS. not just secret room, but LEVELS. The largest one is accessible from one of the very first areas in the game also.
It's not something you'd see in modern AAA games, because the cost of every square meter of the world is too high.
That's why I think games need a sane fidelity/cost balance where the developers can be much more creative and experiment more, because it's not gonna cost them extra millions of dollars in case it doesn't work out.

Amazing video but I think you are a bit more critical on quake 1. The level design in Q1 is flat out brilliant. The dlc were also great but the original is perfection. I’ve played through it 30 times in the last 2 years and the level design, plus there IS tons of variation. I mean you fight an effing dragon.
Both games are brilliant, but I’d like to see a quake 1 video because I’ve replayed it so many times. I love Q2 and agreed with EVERYTHING you said. But these 2 games shouldn’t even be compared, they are both perfection
While I love Q2, the sheer speed of Q1 is just more fun but different strokes. The remaster of both Q1 and 2 are perfection

It's incredible how much Quake 2 has aged like fine wine over the years purely on design acumen that holds up better than most games of its genre. Although I do prefer the lighting in the enhanced edition and most of the original over the RTX edition.
It's both a personal preference and objective observation, but I can't stand the over saturation of global illuminated lighting that ray tracing brought to Quake 2. It kills so much of the atmosphere, mood, and tone of levels that it feels like someone's anal-retentive mod that tries to over correct a problem that wasn't there with the original. It screams too much of a forced tech demo for people to validate $1,000 graphics cards over a meaningful change to the game that's complimentary.

But anyhoo, i noticed that Quake II wanted to install multi-gig update and it was a f*cking remaster!
We've been playing it through in co-op with my brother, like back in the day.

While Quake 2 has more colors than Quake , there is not enough variety to make it stop feeling like things blend together in ways that make me feel lost because I search for secrets. You call Doom confusing but it has a damn automap to accommodate. You want something really confusing? Hexen and Hexen 2, now those are confusing and lack any navigation tools at all.
