"Kanawha" is pronounced differently in West Virginia than in this video. Sample that here: • Kanawha County

Native americans weren't just bad slaves because they died from diseases to often, they were also really amazing at escaping because of how well they knew their homeland.
so they were smart?
Rai Hanzo yeah? Just cuz they were indigenous doesn’t mean they were dumb.
@@SameerHameedy I guess there were more to tge natives than the stereotypes

8:13 Actually, slavery in West Virginia was not ended by the Emancipation Proclamation, which only "freed" slaves in the rebelling states. West Virginia's state legislature abolished slavery on their own in early February 1865, about 2 months before the war ended.
I was under the understanding that gradual abolition (culminating in 1865 as you said) was one of the conditions of W. Virginia actually being admitted as a state. Am I mistaken?
That's why Virginia and west Virginia split cool fact
actually shush hes doing the chanell work not u
Kentucky, Missouri and Maryland were three states that also retained slavery and abolished it on their own. The Emancipation Proclamation (as you said) only ended slavery in states that were in open rebellion against the union; the aformentioned three were not in rebellion. :)
@@jeffbenton6183 That is actually correct.
I'm from Kentucky and my family "owned" 3 slaves. The story was that the slaves were on the run and they needed a place to go so they begged my grandma's great grandparents for them to say that they owned them whenever the authorities showed up, then after the civil war was over I think that a few of them took the last name of Daniels because my family had helped them out. Also for anyone who believes that they were just making it up, just let me tell you that my family was poor and Irish so they had sympathy for people who got treated like ass. Lot's of interesting stuff about the region and most people aren't that interested in learning about it

Almost half of the states in the US have really bad flags. They’re terribly hard to identify and draw. But at least they’re not as awful as Liberia’s county flags.

There is a college in Lexington KY named Transylvania, it was established before Kentucky became a state. It was founded in 1780. Lexington was named for Lexington Mass to honor a win by the colonial army against the British.
Yeah, too bad Lex is going full tilt leftist now. That place is a cesspool - it's turning into Louisville-lite.
@@GMNGChristian You must be from Indiana. Louisville has always been more conservative than Lex. Abolitionism got a big boost here; it's been liberal for over a hundred years. That's why our city is well run.
@@jennylee9278 Nope, I live in KY. Lex has (or had?) a mayor that recently took down a statue in the dark of the night because he thought it was offensive (this is when all these other statues were being taken down across the country by the leftists). Stuff like this shows the true rotten core of any administration. www.kentucky.com/news/local/counties/fayette-county/article179392076.html
@@GMNGChristian Once again I don't understand where you get your information and why you seem to have a hard on for Lexington.
The John Hunt Morgan statue and the one of the confederate man on horses had been in the front yard of the court house. It was decided to move them to the historic Lexington Cemetery. They were moved at night so it would interfere least with downtown traffic; like major road work always is. It's more fitting they are in the cemetery as they will join many other Civil War dead who already have monuments there. Henry Clay is buried there and his monument is there not at his estate on Richmond Rd.
Now please go read a real history book and stop getting your fixed history from dubious sources.
ps that one horse's only claims to fame was that the man's original horse had been a mare but this horse had big ol horse balls. For many decades students have painted those balls bright pick. So we have lost that tradition.
@@jennylee9278 Like I said, it's going full tilt leftist. People like you who - for whatever reason - refuse to be reasoned with, only prove my point by saying/doing anything to justify your position and try to tack on insults in the interim. I suggest you take your own advice.

*West virginia*
The mispronunciation of Kanawha is so grating on the ears. And you also got the creation of West Virginia wrong as well. The unionist government that was set up in Wheeling was called the Restored Government of Virginia (RGoV), also called the Reorganized Government of Virginia and was recognized by Congress as the official government of Virginia during the Civil War and is the direct predecessor of the current Virginia government. At no point did the RGoV reform to make West Virginia. Instead, they gave permission for the western counties to form their own state and moved the seat of government from Wheeling to Alexandria when WV was admitted as a state. The RGoV remained in Alexandria until the end of the Civil War when it moved to Richmond.
And no one told the new state that it had to be named West Virginia, it was because Kanawha there was already a county named Kanawha and the convention delegates thought it would cause confusion.
Some one who actually knows what they are talking about thanks.

Builder101 AKA Master Disaster no but changing it every couple of years for small iterations is tiring, best use something people can easily recognize
Kentucky wasn't neutral. Kentucky sided with the union, with only a fringe group of traitors supporting the Confederacy.
A majority of the population, economy, and official state government supported the union.
Saying Kentucky was neutral is like saying Maryland was neutral.
TheNinjaDC
The State Government officially declared neutrality in the early days of the war and only switched to supporting the Union because the confederacy violated their neutrality.
