I learned about about the Lithium triangle through VisualPolitik. I love learning about regions of the world where there's going to be a global shift in wealth and attention like Central Asia or Svalbard.
Kony, what are you doing here?
@@user-xp8nq5mf9y Taking a break from training my child soldiers of course. Man's gotta have a break sometime. Even with shitty Congolese internet.
@CueBall69 Svalbard is important because of the Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920 that states that Norway has sovereignty over Svalbard but it cannot deploy any military prescense there. The rescources of Svalbard are free to be exploited by any company and from any nation. Russia has had a small coal mining town their for decades called Barentsburg with a population of around 500.
The Arctic is of current intrest because of the large amounts of oil and gas in the area. However these are all under the ocean so far as we know of. The borders of the arctic are defined by the continental shelfs of the respective nation's territorities. Russia is the largest and most powerful player in the Arctic. It has built up it's military prescence in the Arctic recently as a means of projecting power.
Anyway because the Treaty was written in 1920 it was really just about coal and not undersea oil and gas. By extending the borders of Svalbard to it's continental shelf, Russia and other nations can exploit a greater amount of rescources where it is completely free to do so because of the Svalbard Treaty.
In addition, the melting of the ice has meant the opening up of a true North West passage between Europe and Asia which cuts the shipping distance of goods by half. When you're on the route of a possibly highly lucrative shipping lane, and you have large amounts of oil and gas reserves that are completly up for grabs, coupled with the fact that the corporate tax rate is 15% which is lower than Singapore and the government on Svalbard is very much libertarian in it's laws whilst having a strong legal system and not one that is horrifically complicated like Greenland, things are looking pretty good for Svalbard.
TL;DR Melting ice and an old treaty that says all of it's natural rescources are up for grabs and the Norweigian government can't do shit means Svalbard could possibly become the Dubai of the Arctic.
And that is what is happening in Svalbard.
Speaking of demilitarized zones we can exploit, wonder if there's anything interesting beneath the ice in Antarctica

It's very nice to see someone making a video about my home nation Bolivia, and everything said I have seen and agree on. One thing I really think you should've added was the nation's increasing distrust and approval ratings dropping even having the indigenous community dropping support. Evo Morales has been increasing attempts to extend his term. Another thing is he has installed party officals as heads of the military and police so no one would challenge his position as was so common during the cold war. Also one crucial thing you missed is Evo Morales and the government has changed to have party officals at non traditional government positions such as ambassadors and the electoral body. With this came a very hostile on look to western companies looking to invest. This is the same trend that Venezuela began to take and many in Bolivia are fearing that we are gonna turn out like Venezuela due to the increasing nationalisation of private assets.
Great video and thank you for showing South American geopolitics !

Greetings from Chile, you've just won a subscriber.
at 0:20 you say "Agriculture makes less than 10% of CO2 emissions." This is true, but I think disingenuous, and doesn't justify ignoring it. Agriculture is estimated to produce 9% of CO2 emissions, still substantial, but also is estimated to produce around 35 - 40% of methane emissions. Which is a very serious greenhouse gas. Along with other emissions, agriculture is assumed to produce around 18% of greenhouse gases. This doesn't even take into account the other impacts agriculture has on the environment like land use. Wikipedia has a good article on it. See: Climate change and Agriculture

As a Brazilian i an kind of sad of the continent condition.
@meaturama not if you have to import it back overprized as fuck
Our "Elite" class loves to export raw materials as extraction is really easy, but going (not even) all in on the production of manufactured products is hell to them as they have to pay professional level wages instead of just just the minimum for extraction and shipment...
@meaturama When you put a bunch of keynesians in government, who thinks they are the evolved people who knows everything what country needs the result is, Brazil is a giant dumb useless country in the international commerce, like Israel says a few years ago "diplomatic dwarf"
@@RenatoIMPERA It's true. Chile succeded precisely because it did away with the idiotic economic policies of socialism and Keynesianism. Intead they followed the advice of the Chigaco Boys and have grown to become the country in Latin America with the highest standard if living and ease of doing business like was stated in the video.
Ever since Brazil has continued to elect PT into power since 2003, the economy has remained stagnant and the government has devolved into an incredible amount of corruption. Bolsanaro may be crazy, but at least his economic minister is from the Chicago School and will probably implement some much needed reforms to get the country growing again. Brazil has been a country 30 years away from becoming a superpower for the last 20 years now.
The thing about natural resources is the "Resource Course", which basically states that if a poor, corrupt country discovers bountiful natural resources, it will only aggravate inequality and instability. However, if a country already has developed institutions and a friendly business environment, it will benefit enormously from natural resources. Look at America, Canada, Norway, Australia, Israel, and several other stable democracies that have benefitted hugely from their abundant natural resources. Countries that were already dirt poor, corrupt, and unstable that were ruined by natural resources include Venezuela, most African countries, Russia (horribly undeveloped and relies entirely on oil revenue), Brazil, Mexico (which is barely improving its business environment), Central Asia, etc.

A new video topic I might suggest would be the shift in global economic and strategic importance to Central Asia. Peter Frankopan just released his new book on the subject as a follow up to his highly successful 'Silk Roads: A New History of The World' called 'The New Silk Roads'. I would highly recommend checking it out to help you do the research.
You are talking about a place so much isolated from the rest of the world.
@@abuhammad * sigh * I am talking about a place that for centuries has been at the crossroads of trade and intercultural exchange for several thousand years. With the advent of the One Belt, One Road initiative, China is investing billions into infrastructure in order to help faciltate trade with the West. China is building railroads for trains that deliver cargo faster than cargo ships but have more capacity than plane. Not only that but this region is much more free from U.S military influence than the ocean where the U.S has the largest navy in the world.
It's not just being on a lucrative trade route. The Karachaganak natural gas reserves obetween Kazhakstan and Russia hold an estimates 42 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, as well as liquefied gas and crude oil. Turkmenistan controls the fourth largest natural gas supplies in the world at 700 trillion cubic feet. The mines of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan in the Tian Shan belt have the second largest gold deposits in the world. Berylium and dysphrosium 'rare earth' minerals are also found that are crucial to modern electronics as well as supplies of uranium and plutonium. Russia and Ukraine have the some of the richest and most fertile soil in the world. Afghanistan is the largest exporter of opium poppy based products in the world which includes morphine and heroin.
This is a region of huge geostrategic importance. Just because it fell behind after the advent of the trans-oceanic shipping of goods in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries from Portugal and the Netherlands which brain4breakfast explained about in his 'What the Gulf' video, doesn't mean there isn't going to be another shift back towards Central Asia. If you look back, the Near East, Middle East, Central Asia and the Far East have had much more importance historically speaking than Europe prior to the advent of deepwater navigation and European colonialism. That is the whole point of the book you haven't read.
Kony [Current Year] Interesting, but China is not going to last long enough for it to be too major.
@@williammarshal2190 Are you sure? What would be the impotus for a complete collapse of China? This shift to Central Asia is currently happening but slowly. I suspect that it will really show in the 2040s or 2050s.
Kony [Current Year] Since India has been much more open and liberal to the world than Authoritarian China, they will likely have the advantage over China simply due to having a booming population and labor force. Although there are many problems with India, it is a democracy unlike China which by the 2040’s and 2050’s will have serious problems with its people now being more educated. Especially since India has allied with nations such as a Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and other smaller steppe nations to oppose China’s imperialistic initiative.
