Thank you for all the good work you both do. As a non-resident of Delhi but one whose work took her often to the city, I spent weekends walking through these lanes endlessly. Mughal and British histories, ultimately Indian, in a fascinating mix!
Chandni Chawk should absolutely retain its original Mughal asthetic, built in a commercial capacity as the guest speaker said. Shopping plazas, hotels, restaurants, all with the pieces that are original remaining and adding modern day replica rebuilds around them. UNESCO would sympathize with the currents running through India regarding Neo-Hindu nationalism but after the country finds a comfort zone with the Muslim minority, none of this will be identity or caste politics. Reviving such historical areas really is the best way as many other countries have done, with an example being circa 1800s buildings in Distillery Districts for example in Western Europe and the Americas in the 100s, or Kampuchea where they have kept the old architecture to reflect the temples. We should let bygones of eras be bygones. Hindus should actively take ownership of Mughal culture as it is a part of India none should hide or evade from. Denying an era entirely isn't the answer. Seeing the confidence of majority rule today should give Indians the right to progress without any impediments caused by tales that aren't entirely true, and even if they are, all of humanity has skeletons laying in their closets. This is an era to embrace our past while adapting that which is new. We shouldn't punish an entire race group for something their ancestors may have done in the past. Collective guilt is soon to pass. Personal responsibility and merit should make Tomorrow's India, God willing.
Sobia, I may do so but it is all ruined and dilapidated. Last function held in this Haveli in 1978. It was still in a very beautiful and healthy condition.
