  • Shahjahanabad: On Delhi's Broken History | Swapna Liddle and Rana Safvi with William Dalrymple | Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024
    Presented by Rajmahal Palace RAAS
Delhi has always played an integral role in the geographical, social, and political landscape of the Indian subcontinent. Swapna Liddle’s recent book, Broken Script, delves into the intricate struggle between the last two Mughal emperors and the East India Company- one wielding considerable symbolic authority, the other a fast-growing military and political power. Historian and writer Rana Safvi’s trilogy on Delhi- Shahjahanabad: The Living City of Old Delhi; The Forgotten Cities of Delhi; and Where Stones Speak: Historical Trails in Mehrauli, the First City of Delhi - takes a nuanced look into the city's magnificence through its forts and buildings, living monuments to the grandeur and strife of the past. In conversation with historian, Festival Co-Director, and author of The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple, they explore the gallis of the old Mughal capital.
Swapna Liddle is a historian of Delhi and the author of several books on the subject. Her recently published books, The Broken Script: Delhi Under the East India Company and the Fall of the Mughal Dynasty, 1803-1857, and Shahjahanabad: Mapping a Mughal City, are ground-breaking contributions in their field.
Rana Safvi is deeply committed to India's rich cultural heritage and diverse civilisational legacy. Her multifaceted contributions encompass history, literature, cultural preservation, and exploration of culinary heritage. She has authored ten books that delve into topics ranging from culture and history to the monuments of India, including Tales from the Quran and Hadith, The Delhi Trilogy: Where Stones Speak, Shahjahanabad: The Living City of Old Delhi and In Search of The Divine: Living Histories of Sufism in India. Her blog, ranasafvi.com, serves as a treasure trove of cultural, literary, and historical insights.
William Dalrymple is the author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, Duff Cooper Prize-winning The Last Mughal, and the Hemingway and Kapuscinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls. He was presented with the President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. Rana likes to live in the past when the Muslim elite of Delhi (her forefathers) was the ruling class. How jaded? Also, her interpretation of 1857 is a very urban (Dilli) point of view. Generalizing it is just another example of this centuries-old skullduggery.

Most major Hindu temples were destroyed by the Turks in the 12th century and used to build Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque in Qutub minar complex. Though there are still some old temples in Delhi like Yogmaya temple, Kalka Mandir and Jhandewalan Temple, some of them like Kalka mandir was repaired by the Marathas when they came to rule Delhi between 1772 and 1803.

Maybe because Indraprastha is a mythological city from nearly three thousand (possibly less) year old story propagated by a dynasty that ruled the area and used for self-legitimisation... or maybe because in the period that the city was allegedly extant, temples weren't a thing and sacrifices and fire rituals on makeshift altars were the norm... or maybe because almost all dynasties that ruled afterwards erased the histories of dynasties before to remake their own present as is happening in India today.... I guess one would never know.

What are you talking about? The tughlakabad fort was that of a Hindu king. The temples themselves were destroyed by iconoclasts as seen at qutab minar which has the carvings of a jain temple@@TheGawdessDravidienne

although some of these tales might be a true but there is no doubt that our left historians have romanticized and glorified Mughals so much
