If you commute that much you should consider the RWD model 3! Little over 30k Brand new, 5.6 second 0-60 (270hp), auto pilot (trust me, I drive 300 miles a day for commute and it makes a HUGE difference after a long day of work) and no oil changes, and only 6$ to fill up your battery at home (Arkansas electricity rates)
It’s essentially a free car for you if you drive 500 miles a week just on gas savings alone.

From the moment Toyota unveiled it, the new Prius immediately got my attention. I love the look of it. It's a pleasantly shocking 180° - no longer the car we all hated on when the MR2, Supra, and Celica went away, and we were left with nothing exciting at Toyota. I'd love to have the new Prius in my garage. 😎👍 Great video, guys!
The last generation Prius was given to me with 12k. I drove it for a year. Died a little every time I drove it. Replaced it with a Mini Copper S and started to live again. The everyday driver crew helped me find my love of small ,light and chuckable . We should all be EVERYDAY Drivers. The world needs cars that make our hearts and souls sing and laugh!
I drove a Camry once. It felt like a punishment. I could only imagine previous generations of Prius.

From one Michael to another: Amen. I bought a ‘21 Prius Prime and in no time I realized that I’d sold my soul. I got rid of it when used car values were at their peak and got a Jetta GLI. Haven’t looked back.

The new Prius design is what a modern CRX should've been, which is a good thing IMHO.
Btw, I've gotten 35 mpg average on my Elantra N, on my trip from LA to Napa (400 mi. each way), which is unheard of on a high performance sports car. It was my first road trip in my Elantra N, and certainly wasn't expecting it, but it was surprisingly, extremely comfortable as well! Absolutely in love with my EN!
Unheard of for an American maybe. 2.0 turbo in-line 4 are rather common (think Golf GTI, R, A45, etc) and yes they do return good mileage on the highway 👍
The irony is that I saw the new Prius and heard them talking HP and went wow that's like a CR-Z Mugen. It even somewhat looks like what I would imagine a modern version of one might look like.
Highway mpg....im getting 30+mpg on 2018 M3 on highways. 36mpg was my max driving 700 miles.
Its not unheard of....turbo charged sports cars can get up there easy.
Heck C8 with NA V8 gets 30mpg on highway with their cylinder deactivation.
Newer cars are designed for fuel efficiency bozo 🤡🤡🤡
Of course, the CRX HF could get over 50 mpg over 30 years ago....
From a gearhead point of view, I look at it as you only live once, and one of the great thrills in life is your transportation, whether it’s silver, the horse, (Lone Ranger) or your Porsche 911. Driving is the one thing that we do daily and I think it should bring some thrill to your life and that is why I love my 23 ELANTRA N DCT.

The technology in the new Prius is great. I've only had mine a week so I'm still learning many things. Today I had it sitting outside of the garage for a while and when I pulled it in I lowered the front windows a few inches and parked it. Leaving the car there was a message on the screen that windows were down. Within moments I got a text message saying that multiple windows were open. Approach the car on a hot summer day and you can either start it with the AC on or hit the unlock button twice on the FOB and then hold it down and all four windows will roll down.
If Toyota is gonna be crazy enough to make a GR Prius, sport mode should use the hybrid battery power like KERS from F1.
We now live in a world where a Prius is faster than pretty much every 80's sports car.
I commute in a 2015 Chevy Cruze diesel and was pleasantly surprised to find it is quite a competent mountain car. The chassis is always unflappable even if the tires are economy oriented. I did a full loop of the North Cascades at a decent pace with a 42mpg average. No sports sedan, but I found the competency surprising and enjoyable on challenging roads. So I get this discussion, for sure!

Previous Priuses, while dorky and awkward to hustle, have otherwise all been really great cars...not for enthusiasts, but great cars for lots of people. To have a Prius that finally looks and drives in the ballpark of a regular premiumish vehicle, not dorky not snobby just attractive and effective, feels like a smash hit. And frankly the price points are really reasonable in today's market. I don't need it to be a GTI beater (though what would a proper GR Prius entail??). Honestly as much as I love the Mazda3, I don't see the point now that you can get a Prius. That's kinda where Toyota's at here IMO
Mazda 3 offers a manual transmission on the trim that competes with the prius
@@afreiden Fair point, but it's not a very sporty car. I guess that was my implied point: Mazda needs to move the 3 to a more performance realm, because the hybrids are here to offer the premium everyday experience for the same price and comparable driving dynamics but while getting 50+ MPG instead of mid to upper 20s or low 30s. I still buy stick and you may too but few buyers do anymore; basically I'm saying the premium near-luxury compact car niche that the 3 was filling has been taken over by the Prius, so Mazda needs to shift the 3 toward the Si/GTI/N side of things.

It's still such an L that Mazda hasn't made a proper hybrid Mazda 3 or CX-30 yet. They should really leverage their partnership with Toyota to get the new Prius setup into the 3 and CX-30.
i had one from past 8 years, best workhorse ever. You can load so much, and zero breakdown. Now i got this model actually i got the Prime, its amazing. Drives great comes with all those saftey features. LOVE IT
A "GR" Prius with slightly wider tires, better bolstered seats, less soft suspension, and reworked programming for a more natural feel would be a very interesting thing indeed.
I would absolutely buy an 1 inch factory lifted Prius TRD-Pro awd that would fit an A/T tire.
When I was a teenager, my friends and I loved hooning around back roads in econoboxes- Renault R8’s, early Beetles, Datsun 1200’s, etc. Best of all, you could go head-to-head from a stoplight downtown, and no-one would notice.
I love the fact that the Prius is even in contention. They made the greatest "Normie" car :) Great job Toyota
Surprisingly that elantra n engine is quite efficient on highway. Returns 33 easily so i am on team NGS.
Same i ate up gas having fun with it but when i commute its astonishing how efficient it can be.
On highway commutes in Eco, my Kona N has been averaging 37mpg. Quite frugal for a monster.
#Hi, from Japan!! Nice musics you put in the video as usual. Now, having Prius is not embarrassing. It can be the ordinary dad’s best car. But Elantra is still a car for canyon road dads obviously. Prior Toyota CEO Morizo has indicated the company to make fun cars more than before. We expect new CEO Sato-san who comes from Lexus next!!
I'd certainly take a Prius Prime SE and put some rims and tires on it. In Supersonic Red, I think it would look pretty sweet and it's even faster. I am willing to bet there will be aftermarket suspension upgrades for these.

Angeles Crest Highway moment
I'm 37 years old and drive a gen 2 prius. I've had it for 1 and a half years. It's ugly, slow & has a lot of cabin noise, but it's so easy to drive. I commute 39 miles each way and it's great on fuel economy and in traffic. It has also been incredibly practical too and has a surprising amount of space.
In the UK we mainly have manual cars so jumping to non gear has really helped me relax on my drive. The purpose of a prius was never to be fun for me, but just get me through my drive. I'm relaxed compared to when I drove a manual.
If people can afford it, have a 2nd car that's for fun.
2nd gen Prius(NWH20) in Japan was so fast. Then 3rd and 4th were so slow. Now 5th gen Prius became fast again?
Im an American and unlike most of my kind, I hate automatics...my 1998 Nissan Sentra manual gets up to 40MPG

Wow, just a few minutes in and there are some really great shots and unique camera angles.
Some time ago I was lurking on the Grassroots Motorsports forums and as I recall someone there had a Prius of which he wanted to improve the handling. He wound up boxing the rear torsion beam (I believe the new one has a more complex suspension setup) and while still being slow and comfy and boring to look at, it cornered flatter and would rotate when he lifted off the throttle. This series keeps reminding me of that.

Don’t let these guys fool you about the last gen Prius. I own a 2013 Prius V. It gets 44 mpg. I drive it like a 20 something y/o would and still get great mileage. The thing about my Prius that I almost never hear is it has a power button on the console where your fingers rest when your arm is on the center armrest. I toggle back and forth as needed between power mode and eco mode. The power mode feels like a turbo. I actually call it Ferrari mode. When I have the pole position at a red light I take off very quickly because I don’t want anyone getting the wrong idea about a Prius. I want them to see what it’s capable of. I’m sure I have left a few jaws dropped behind me as I easily turned them into little dots in my rear view.
As an EN owner, and someone that's driven previous generation pruis' I must say that although they're slow and ugly, they're kinda fun to throw around. When I saw this one and heard the 60% power bump, i knew Toyota hit the nail in the head with this generation. I'm assuming this still feels like a carboard box with 4 wheels, only difference now is that its significantly quicker. Ive even thought about perhaps trading in my EN or getting this as a daily commuter. It sure looks sharp and fun!

Driving a fast car fast is good fun. Driving a slow car fast, is actually more fun. British sports cars from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s are difficult to get over 60mph, but it is incredibly fun to try. Isn’t that the ultimate truth about being a car enthusiast?
The comment about the back end coming out reminds me of my CRZ once I modified it with stiffer suspension and type R wheels and better tires the battery being over the rear axle makes the rear end rotate like a RWD car in a sense when throwing it into a corner.
Great point about the Prius being predictable in cornering. I have road race and rally experience and like to drive hard in the twisties (especially in the rain). I am thinking of the new Prius as my next ride with a tire upgrade and maybe bigger rear anti-roll bar to balance it out.
Agreed. A stiffer rear sway bar dials back the understeer from a front drive car. It would be my first modification for performance. Next would be tires.
Can we get this in the wagon/hatchback style like a few generations ago? It would fix the only downsides of being a sedan with a small back row

i had to drive a 2018 prius for work and i drove that thing like a madman. the novelty of driving a 100% economy car like a madman almost brings it back around to fun while trying to push it to its limit, but it also felt almost dangerous sometimes merging onto highways and interstates due to the snail-like power. the new prius is a welcome upgrade, but also a necessary one. glad toyota gave it the facelift it deserved. also, great video!
I am a car inthusest But with Hi Gass prices and a long commute. Recently I purchased a 2022 Corolla hybrid. Every car I've owned I've Installed lowering Springs. Front strut in rear sway bar. So of course I have to do it to this one too Seems crazy but if you're into cars you're gonna Modify anything to make it drive better Not to Stoked on the looks of the front of the prius Cool thing about the Corolla hybrid nobody knows you're driving a prius😆
The Prius reminds of me a Matchbox toy car I owned in the 70"s. Looks great. They could do a GR Sport version like the CHR.

Before i drove coupes and did track stuff, I owned a prius and I loved it! I'm like 6'5" and the Prius is truly one of the only cars where I have had ample room above my head.
I feel you. My friend's rave about miatas and tiny roadsters but when I sit in them it is obvious that I am taller than the car was designed for. Doesn't matter how great a car is if you can't fit in it. A few good options are the Porsche 911 and boxster and cayman siblings. Bmw m cars are also good for us as they have the same space as the regular models. Additionally I've heard Ferrari mid-engine berlinettas have great headroom while the Huracan and Gallardo are very cramped.
Coilovers and tyres could make it very interesting.
In Europe the new Civic Hybrid seems very appealing too (dynamic+mileage) , you should give it the same test if available in your country.
Note : I'm commuting, back roading and tracking a 2016 Fiesta ST. 😅

Yeah, N’s are mostly beat on. Most N’s are driven like they’ve got something to prove. These cars have already proven themselves.

Got my prime last week. Had a 3rd gen daily before. Such a relief going up hills withough hearing the motor struggle. Gotta get rid of the awkward skinny 19's and stiffen up the rear though. Shares parts with the Corolla and CHR and Cusco just released a full suspension set.
Would be good to know what your MPG was during your time driving it like a hoon? And what comparison MPG was with Elantra N. Specially ppl with longer commute cost of gas per week is a big factor in decision making process of which car to get.

This is wider tires and a bit of suspension tuning away from the ideal daily driver. Curious if they will do it or the civic hybrid will take that spot.
I drove the old one and couldn't wait to get out of it!! it felt like a tin can sh*t box. I don't need to save $50 a month to feel miserable every time I drive somewhere. 🤥
I wish you guys compare with the AWD model. It's half second faster to 60 mph and the weight is more balanced.

The rear styling still leaves something to be desired, but otherwise a great new look.
Toyota's new CEO promised 'no more boring cars' - GR Yaris, GR86, GR Corrolla, and now the Prius, sounds like they're sticking to the plan!
Not to pour salt on this wound, but Akio Toyoda, who said that in 2017, is no longer CEO. Koji Sato, of Lexus fame, has taken the reigns and has a more EV and hydrogen focused future. Akio thankfully is part of the board, but this changes day-to-day commitments.
I mean, I get it - there are driving enthusiasts like you guys who appreciate the finer points of how a car feels, how it performs, and you appreciate the engineering that goes into it. But in the real world, I question how many people who buy a performance oriented vehicle actually use it and drive it in a way that exposes its capabilities. I'm sure there are people who do - people who have the disposable income to own a car just for the purpose of driving it for fun. I'm sure there are also people who buy cars like that and use them to go to the grocery store, the office park, and to drop the kids off at school and who never really drive them at their limits. But I think most people want a car that performs reasonably well, looks cool, and also well suited for daily, practical use. Maybe I'm wrong about that. All I know is that the Prius does enough of those things well enough to make me want one. I guess it's clear by this point that I don't consider myself a driving enthusiast, but I still appreciate your content :)
Toyota is killing it lately.
I feel like everyone forgets what the generations of Prius did for their line.
-The forgotten first gen, nevermind. It was an exercise in tech. Those were the 11-ish second cars to 60, but also had a Lexus-ish interior treatment compared to what followed for generations to come.
-Second gen that everyone knows as THE Prius and set the tone. I believe those were high 9-second 0-60's, and again had some TRD support for swaybars, maybe a couple of other things (albeit not advertised much)
-Third generation was actually faster than it's successor, and even offered TRD pieces via the Prius Plus package (lowered, different damping, swaybars, forged alloys), but ultimately was still numb (to be fair, I haven't driven the Prius Plus). It also offered better rear headroom than the previous gen. This finally broke into the high 8-second 0-60 range, which was competitive with pretty much half the plain compacts of the time (such as a Cruze turbo automatic, Corolla, Elantra, etc).
-The fourth gen cut down the power down, but independent rear suspension finally became a thing, and the steering actually seems more quick and natural-- I even experienced progressive lift-off rotation in one on one of my freeway offramps (specifically a Prime, thought the cool rear window would be questionable for replacement costs). A very willing partner, those. But they were also back to the mid 9's.
Now it's just prettier and more powerful, but cutting headroom even more in back yet again, just makes the Uber life less useable.
Kudos for Toyota for making an interesting high MPG car. Ditto for the Elantra becoming a niche small sedan rather than just a "small sedan". We have two 2015 VW Jetta Hybrids. Only sold in the US for a few years - sigh. Now VW is hyper focused on EVs only in the US, with plenty of hybrids in Europe. I changed tires once the original Continental 195s were used enough, switching to Nokian all-weather WGR4 in 215 width. The tread compound and tire patch (asymmetrical) offers a very good year-round (while not a being high end Winter tire substitute -- but very good) tire for modest snow, slush, rain, sun etc. And the compound is made for EVs in mind. We got 42-46 MPG in the Jetta's on the smaller OE tires. We get 42-46 still on the Nokians. And the tire width change adds to the responsiveness of driving. In Sport mode (higher shift points and more transmission [it is a 7-speed DSG) braking]) this is a very good mid-size sedan to chuck around corners and climb hills. And while it 'prefers' hi-test octane it does all I've noted on 87 just fine. Overall this is a great blend of fun and high MPG. LOVE THE CONTENT!!
Just curious... what would the fuel milage be on equal tires.
I know I mentioned this in the other video you guys did for the EN vs. Type-R but it bears repeating. No, the EN can't match the Prius in mpg, especially city mpg, but my EN got 38.4/39.8 mpg on the freeway going to my yearly Tail of the Dragon last fall. I did +5 mph, used cruize and ECO mode, so great mpg CAN be done, just drive it normal😇
The more fair comparison is the regular Elantra not the N version. The other thing is that you can push the Prius and have some fun and still get over 50 mpg when you want too. Not the case with the Elantra N which gets about half the mpg at about 25 mpg.
People used to look at me like I was smoking crack when I told them I was routinely getting 50MPG 10 years ago. Yeah, having the TC kick in to protect the drivetrain wasn't fun, but I didn't exactly hypermile it either.. the torque was a lot of fun.
Had a 2021 Prius Prime, a perfectly fine car to get to and from work without ruining your wallet.. but my 2024 is just another thing! An immence improvement everywhere.. except outside visibility..
I really enjoyed this post, the bewilderment was more than evident. 😀 Modern Toyotas are seemingly crafted with a mindset of 'all arounded-ness', which I'd argue is a page from Lexus. No it's not lightning quick, but it CAN get out of its way. No it's not a zero emission EV, but there is NONE of the accompanying range or infrastructure anxiety. No it's not the best looking sedan, but it's clearly attractive. Add it all up and the Prius now does everything well-enough. So do you want a car that does one thing amazingly well or one with high-enough marks across the board? Toyota will sell a crap-ton of these things. Thanks for posting!
Please mod a prius with wider sport tires wheels larger anti sway bars stiffer suspensions front tower brace 4 piston from brakes half inch lower drive height.
Therer are no other tires for it at the moment. I'd like some Michelin PS4s on it. I think these will be modded. Looking forward to seeing how competent this AWD system is in the snow.

I heard the top-spec engine is 223 wish you guys would test that as well as the one in between which is 199 with the all-wheel drive on one of them.
Prius has everything everyone asked for. Which is probably why it, unfortunately, won't sell as well. Headroom is too low for a lot of Uber/Lyft guys. For a little more you can get a Model 3, which is what Prius owners are upgrading to. Glad they made, just wish it had been eight years ago (I still have my '05 as a commuter and it never breaks).

I love the Tesla Model 3 and Nissan Ariya or even 2021 Rav4 Prime but with the gorgeous design, decent EV range and practicality of its hybrid engine and at this price point, there's just no reason to not go for the Prius Prime 2023 over the others. When charging is not an option, I can still fill up and go.
Great video. I just had my 1989 Supercharged MR2 down in SoCal for Toyotafest and the road you are driving looks very much like Little Tujunga Canyon Road that I drove on. Is that where you are doing this video or this Angeles Crest Highway, or somewhere else? My wife drives a 2010 Prius and it's been a great car for all 150k miles she's had it. It's a good thing that she is perfectly fine with the performance of it on her commute.

The new Prius looks good. You are still making a statement but now it’s doesn’t look weird. I wonder how much does the range/gas mileage get impacted by bigger tires and wheels.

The sway bar effects the other end of the car than its on. Which end you want to limit roll ??
Great comparison guys! I own a 2013 Lexus CT200h that has Michelin Pilot Sports instead of the Prius tires. It makes a difference in performance and braking. The cost is a little more than half the cost of the Prius tire so it was a win win. I’m considering an Elantra N and the new Prius BUT I still have reservations regarding the Prius’s ability to pass effectively. I’ve had a few scary moments trying to pass slow moving traffic on Hwy 2(above La Canada) where the other vehicles sped up and were side by side with me at the end of the passing zone…and there was nothing I could do. I swore never to buy a slow car again because of what other wreck less drivers can do so I bought a Type R. Owning the CTR gave me more options on that same road BUT I still chose to drive at reasonable speeds. I witnessed at least 6 bad accidents on that road(commuters following each other too close around blind corners at high speeds,opposite traffic crossing over lines on turns,wildlife crossing road etc.)and I decided being first around a blind corner at higher speeds was a recipe for disaster. I save that kind of driving for the track…
This ain't your ct. 7 seconds to 6 is pretty respectable. Your ct is probably 10 seconds or more.
@@KC-lg8qf Never said it was comparable to my CT. Yes my CT does 60 in 10 seconds but the point I was making is what the new Prius will do when it matters like passing. I’ll pay a penalty at the pump every time in order to have a car that can pass safely on a two lane mountain road etc. Driving an underpowered car definitely has it’s pitfalls. Just bought a 22 Accord with 9k miles…2.0t(de tuned Type R engine)and automatic. Very roomy,powerful and reliable car. Couldn’t be happier!
I don't see why you would worry about a car that's 3 seconds quicker to 60. Why would they leave holes in the power band or passing at highway speeds in a car that they intentionally made 60% faster. There's really no case to even compare this to the previous models as it's a completely different line of thinking.
@@KC-lg8qf That power you’re referring to is off the line. My CT felt quick off the line but that was it. I’m referring to passing at highway speeds…the top end…which trust me…no Prius is going to have the horsepower or torque to compete with actual performance cars. A Prius is not a Tesla…those just go no matter what. You floor a Prius at highway speeds…get what you’re going to get and pray that it’ll have enough power to do what you want in the amount of space or time that you ask of it. I’m not worried about anything related to the new Prius because for me personally there are so many other cars that I’d rather own first. The Accord I just purchased for example can have all of tunes and bolt ons that the Civic Type R has available so it has a lot more potential in the smiles per gallon! Prius is a good looking and zippier car…just not enough for someone that grew up driving muscle cars. To each his own.
@@justwingingit1 again.... I totally understand that. We are talking about a completely different vehicle. There's no need to worry that it's going to perform like a car that was a full 3 seconds slower. There was an obvious and significant decision to make the car significantly faster. I don't think they would leave something like merging onto the highway unchanged. It's not even the same engine.
We have a 1.0l VW Polo tsi, it makes 95hp, manual.
It's so much fun to drive despite being slow and a bit sloppy.
I really want to slap more performant tires and suspension on the car, maybe a muffler swap too. But it's the family car and I can't decide what goes on the car :(

Just put the $ factor in the equation please... The Prius looks very good now, the maintenance cost is probably the lowest in the industry, you get over 50mpg and it's is pretty quick. What else do you need ? For me, as a Canadian it's the Prius Prime with 220hp and about $7000 kick back from government (fed and province). That's the best deal you can dream of... So, I'm on the waiting list since year now...
Don't know what the efficiency penalty would be to put better tires on the Prius, but I'd like to know.
