Prius vs GTI - Can tires help the Hybrid be a Hot Hatch? | Everyday Driver

- As part of our time with the updated (and finally good looking) Toyota Prius, we took of the high-MPG / Low-grip tires and replaced them with something from our friends at Vredestein. Can something as simple as a wheel and tire change elevate the Prius to the level of the iconic VW GTI? A trip to our local canyons during the height of fall seemed like the best way to document the changes and see how much our MPG suffered.

The Prius is ready for a GR version! I'd buy one in a heartbeat!
it just needs the 300 hp package from the Rav4 prime.
The Prius is ready for a full EV and a return of the smaller C/Aqua years ago.
@@Xander1Sheridanthe PHEV battery should be capable of putting out 30-50 hp if there was a rear motor to accept it.
Even being compared with a GTI is a huge compliment to the Prius!
I feel the same way when people compare my 350z to the mclaren f1
Im waiting to see i
f they take the Prius PRIME against the GTi
@@brandonsever2576 Prius and Gti are competitors, get over it guy 😂
@@Youcallthesebagels_ lol I'm not butthurt, I was making a joke about how any two cars can be compared, even if they're not anywhere close to each other. I actually quite like the new prius and dislike the GTI
If you factor in reliability - the Prius is an amazing vehicle.
Thanks for this! I'd love to see the GR people get a hold of the Prius.
Check out the Toyota Prius 24h Le Mans Centennial GR Edition from Toyota's Gazoo Racing division.
I remember people saying I was crazy when I reviewed the Prius Prime for Hooniverse and said it was shockingly fun, and just a fantastic daily, not just an efficient one. And here I am to say thank you for spreading the gospel of Prius! Biggest glowup in automotive history.
Thank you! Obviously, we agree on this latest gen. It’s interesting how many people can’t even consider the possibility that the Prius has gotten better.
I’ve followed this channel for quite awhile, and content like this is why. Your “feet on the ground” car guy attitude matches my own. The Phaeton enthusiasm! The Miatas! And now this hot-looking new Prius… and yes, tires and wheels transform almost any car. I drive a mint, nearly 20-year-old E320-CDI Benz. The diesel has torque for miles and it handled well-enough on the stock wheels and decent all-seasons, but recently acquired 18” E55 wheels and new Michelin Pilots, It was transformed. The next change was Bilstein B6 shocks/struts and Akebono pads with new rotors. Amazing, great looks, stable and comfortable handling on twisty mountain roads and I’ve gotten as high as 41mpg on the highway, but the way I normally drive it’s more usual around 36 hwy, 25 city. If I didn’t love this Benz so much, If VWs were more reliable, I’d have a GTI, but now I’d consider a hot rod Prius.
Glad to have you with us, and we're pleased to know our approach resonates with you!
hot rod prius? my concept car is a lotus style momentum preservation prius... would also help the high miles per gallon goal,
those are both excellent cars. I've always wanted a manual GTI, but lately (and as I'm getting older) I see a huge value in electrifying my non-enthusiastic commute, as well as finding a daily driver my wife can drive (so...automatic). Dear Prius, you may be my next daily. A GR Prius would seal the deal. Thanks guys for giving the Prius more ammunition.
Really fascinating to see what just a wheel and tire change will do the character of the Prius.
I love it! Great change of pace on this one, boys!
I have eagerly anticipated this video to hear these results, and I am amazed as they are. Well done.
Great content, I have been looking forward to this and great choice of the GTI for reference!
Loving that you are doing this series!!
Has me thinking a Prius could be in my garage one day. It would be the Everyday Driver Edition of course. 😊
You'd need some kind of a special bumper sticker or badge. "I ❤ Everyday Driver" or "ED is my copilot" "Do u have ED in your life?"
@@ChoPi-Eww that’s amazing!!! Noted if this happens in the future.
A video made only by those that think outside the box.
Great video. The information you provide along with your sense of humor, it’s really fun. Thank you.
We appreciate you watching!
Prius really age like a fine wine . Cannot wait for a GR Prius
Great video! Thank you!!!!
now the main issue of Prius is Toyota not building enough of them
got to keep it so dealers can over charge for them lol
They need a whole new plant..
Best video yet! Yesssss to a Prius with performance tires!
The editing for this video is amazing. First time watching you guys and just subscribed.

Fun review . Thanks
That GR Prius concept at 8:13! I would rock the hell out of that thing. Can you imagine smashing STIs and Type Rs in a Prius?
The combo of the bronze wheels with that grey paint and black arch liner looks amazing. Yes, I said it.
I had a 2010 Prius with 270k miles on it that I purchased at auction for $400 because it had a blown head gasket and red triangle of death.
$1500 later I put a rebalanced array in it, rebuilt the engine, cleaned the EGR cooler, and installed a set of pilot sport 4s on aftermarket lightweight wheels I scored at a junkyard just to see what would happen.
Anyway, it was impressive enough I ordered front and rear sway bars, upgraded the brakes, and installed a set of used BC coil overs I scored on a message board by trading some stuff for a Miata I had laying around.
It was so much fun coming up and pushing limp bois through Angeles Crest in cars that should have smoked me everywhere, not just straights.
It still returned 44mpg on my commutes and ran great until I parted it out after getting rocked by a suburban CrossFit commando wannabe vet bro in a Ram TRX at, no joke, a Starbucks drive thru.
He was so sure he had the right of way coming out of the pickup… until the cop showed up and looked at my dash cam footage.
Guy floored it to get ahead of a Prius passing through the parking lot because his manhood couldn’t take the insult only he perceived.
Full blown broadside ramming.
Prius took the hit like a champ and I drove it home (had to exit out the passenger side) and kept driving it until I got my checks.
Only thing slower to 60 was a shopping cart blown by wind in a Walmart parking lot, but that little hybrid was a riot and built for shaming guys with fat wallets and thin skills behind the wheel.

This is a genius idea for your new series. Excited to see all the upgrades! GO PRIUS!😆
Factor in projected reliability and the Prius closes the gap. One of the best abilities is availability.
Projected....as the CT200H demonstrated, even a Toyota hybrid could have engine design issues. Even so, I'd roll the dice on this over any other car these days and as I get tired of wrenching on my own cars, I'm eyeing EVs despite some of the issues. Maybe a hybrid would be a good onramp for me if they can just give me 250-300hp, similar torque and high 30's (not asking for high 40's lol) mpg.
@@diydrivenGA worth noting: My 2020 Civic Si coupe is a very fun drive and I'm averaging just over 35 mpg with 75% urban driving. Road trips are surprisingly comfortable for two with 40+ mpg easily acheivable at steady speeds. When the road gets interesting, the car is ready to have fun. Reliability has been excellent, dealer maintenance costs very competetive.
@@diydrivenGAwhat's the flaw in the ct?
@@dyoel182didn't they have head gasket issues? I thought the Prius of the same year did too

Best Prius commercial ever. Can’t wait for the next one.
Thanks for taking on the task of answering the Prius question the way you have. Somebody needed to do it!
Cool comparison and great video as always. I have a 23 GTI and I love it. Such a great versatile car that’s pretty fun to drive. I also have a ND2 Miata club edition and for my money that’s the best 2 car setup out there!
Hi, from Japan!! I have been looking forward to seeing this tire change challenging. Prius became a sporty car as we expected. I love your way of upgrading cars. You changed wheels and tires before engine!!
Can you send me over a new Honda civic type R to Europe from your wonderful country please 😊 🇯🇵.
@@shane6115Thank you very much. Actually, type R is not available even in Japan now due to lack of semiconductors and many parts. I love European cars, too.
@@mkei8973 if you guys can’t get a type R there is no hope for us in Europe, I’m a Lexus is300h hybrid driver now, my last 2 cars were civic type Rs and 2005 EP3 type R and a 2008 FN2 type r
We need a GR Prius
I have the tein flex z coilover on my 3rd gen Prius and it was night and day on the corners. I just ordered all the Cusco bars and I can’t wait to install it
Great comparison, team. I like the way you think! The new Prius is actually pretty amazing and it's cool to see how good it can get with just a wheel and tire upgrade.
Love to see Prius VS Mazda 3
No one asked for this comparison… but I love it 😂
A few years from now they will unleash the GR Prius and own that hybrid performance car market. This will be a big win for Toyota. They have really taken control of the enthusiast market and still deliver to the regular consumer market. Great job Toyota
As of this moment I would say Hyundai owns the enthusiast market with the N division.
@@MeltingRubberZ28 they do, no doubt.
Clever idea, tires. Very smart move.
Just make a series about slowly changing parts on the prius (coils, sway bar, brakes etc)
Vredestein is my favourite tire company! ❤️
As soon as I saw the new Prius (and its SKIN-NY 195s) I was curious what some more meat on it would look like.. Thank you for satisfying that itch! This looks great!
I love the Vredestein tires I put on my car. Best tires for handling corners I have ever owned.
Which Vredestein tires do you have? I bought thy Hypertrac and agree 100%.
Every time I see a new Prius, I always say to myself, damn that's a good-looking car
I love it when I recognize the road. Did you walk through cascade springs?
Not this time. We never have during a shoot actually but I've been there many times. I love that place!
I kinda like the look of bronze enki's on the prius
I would like to see more tests like this. I have often wondered what performance rubber on a 6 speed Crosstrek would drive like. [given that I own one] Or any other car that is not known for 'sporty driving'.
So long as your going with a slightly shorter sidewalk as well, it’s quite good ime. I owned a 6spd Mazda 3 hatchback a while ago and put grippy tires on it, made it a lot more… grippy.
My wife drove a 2010 Prius which was an embarrassing slug off the line, but handled corners and snow like a champ. There was something about the weight distribution that gave the car great balance and much to my surprise handled corners like it was on a rail. The new Prius really caught my eye and when we needed to replace the 2010, I started searching for a 2024 model which was in super short supply. Finally saw a Limited AWD with all the right goodies and raced to the dealer and scooped it right out from another buyer who was on their way. Talk about a smooth ride - this car is a joy to drive. My daily driver was a 2017 Audi Allroad Prestige with a few tricks, which I run with separate sets of summer/winter rims and tires. The stock skinny tires on the new Prius just don't do it, and when cornering at speed, they lose grip quick. This video is just what I was looking for. I now drive about 1,000 miles a week for work and the Prius is now my daily drive, and I am not gentle with her. With the dynamic drive mode set at 80 -85 mph I've been getting 44.9 mpg on my trips (along coastal New England), but the car is squirrely as hell on the highway at speed. No triple digit mph drives like the Audi, but damn the miles go by effortlessly. The new Prius seats are totally fine IMHO. Fit and finish on the Prius interior is quite good, but the even with the upgraded JBL sound, it doesn't come anywhere close to the banging Bang & Olufsen 19 speaker stock sound in the Audi. Ya gotta have good tunes! I will definitely be going in for this tire set up and will also be looking for a set of winter tires to fit the stock rims if possible. Any recommendations?
More videos on the Prius please!!!
I didn't hear it mentioned but the Prius is pretty close to 60/40 weight distribution. That helps in those corners. You can also bump some power with better plugs and air intake.
Came to say beautiful outdoors. From Tx
Wait till the GR Prius. It's coming. It's going to blow minds
Prius really age like a fine wine)))
I like how in the beginning the first guy said wow VW has better steering feel and the second guy said its just heavier but doesnt give any better feel lol
This is the core of our show. Two hosts, creating the possibility of different impressions. Thanks for watching.
Those wheels look 👌
Hybrids like the Prius are the real honest answer to lowering vehicle emissions, NOT 5 to 9 thousand pounds EV's that will simply not be produced in enough numbers with a prolific enough charging system to dramatically change the automotive landscape
Damn I think I really am gonna end up getting this car. Looking at the Prime because I could set up a charger easily and it would be enough to cover my daily commute.
Either a white one or that gorgeous blue with some bronze Enkie RPF1's with 205 all around to keep my efficiency and add just a bit more grip.
I wouldn't think these two cars would attract the same buyer demographic?
I'm not sure about Paul's statement regarding upgrading Brakes on the Prius making it "Quick". Quick to stop I suppose. The wheel and tire upgrade made a huge difference though. Thanks for the great quality video
Great stuff! You should compare it to one of the minis, e.g., the Countryman in AWD, which is a nice commuter car that has a little fun to drive and is around 35k…I’ve been driving mine daily and loving it…
Does beg the question about all the R&D $$$$ they dump into low resistance tires for these hybrids…is it a gimmick?
Is the fastback Prius as practical for cargo as the boxy GTI ? 11:43 fingerprint reveal. Excellent introductory comparison; hopefully you can revisit when Prius suspension options are available stateside. Very curious about how easily front-rear weight transfer is with the hybrid drivetrain, find out if lift throttle oversteer is on tap or muted.
I want to see the GR Prius
Back in the day, my first gen Prius never really stuck to the road until after reaching 100 mph and over. And then it was like riding a rail
I love my prius, and i thank God for my prius.
I put a deposit to order a Prius LE 2 months ago and it is estimated to arrive in 9 months. I was thinking about changing the wheel/tires to maybe just 205 wide but still using 17" wheels. (slightly bigger diameter, wonder if it would rub the fenders.
I really wish Toyota would make one with the RAV4's bigger hybrid drivetrain in bright yellow color. That would be a great sports car but still getting a good mileage.
..
Dang that is one great looking GTI 😅 windshield still isn’t fixed
Yeah... Tires & wheels, perhaps Koni Yellows & swaybars. Then go autocrossing...
Wonder if seats from another Toyota model would fit?
Priuses are momentum cars. Keep the speed up and they'll handle better than you'd expect. Some Toyota engineers took the previous-gen Prius rallying on the stock engine. Prius GR when?
Such a flaccid review
Dry. Impotent
Happy. Add an OBD2 virtual tach- completely changes how u drive the car. Third, at standing start, with foot on brake, gently step on gas while still standing.. Somehow this tells the computer to engage both M/G's when launching=much better acceleration off the line.
Toyota is really making some good moves
The new prius looks SOOOOOOO good. I wish Honda made a hybrid city E and brought it to the states. I'd love that and a prius in my stable.
I’d love to see you compare your hopped up Prius to the, last of the breed, manual transmission 2019-present Nissan Versa with a similar treatment. The Nissan can be purchased new with a 16k sticker price, basically half what the Toyota sells for. Curious to see if a manual adds enough fun and engagement to compete.
Ok, not exactly a comparison, but I found that the 220x40x18 setup on an older GTI is a good swap out for my 2015 Prius4. Also, 3 things that change 2015 (gen3) perfirmance with little $$: replace air intake with Injen cold air direct air intake completely changes engine/car perfoance- both hp & mpg, the engine is uncorked & happy
i own a 2017 Golf R and love the looks of the Prius😍
Wow my 2012 civic LX coupe averages 39 and thats almost all highway driving. For you guys to get 38 doing sporty mountain driving is honestly insanely impressive!!!
Never thought I’d see the day where I might want a Prius
I went from a Scat Pack, Kona N, to a 2024 Prius. 😂 Sign I’m getting older, but the Prius is bad ass getting 54 mpg. Super comfortable with reliability.
Same here man! From a V8 to a new Prius and I’m enjoying it 😂
I’ll be 40 in a few months, so yeah, seems about right to start prioritizing reliability.
Would be an interesting comparison to a Golf GTE for markets that both cars are available in.
Great video!
I just traded a kidney for an Evo X.
GR Prius with the faux manual eshift. I want one. I would preorder
I’d like to see how the hybrid civic will do. Waiting for about 6-12 months.
13:56 had me rolling
Having read Car & Driver's comparison of the Prius vs. Accord Hybrid and now watched your video, I have to wonder how the inherently decent handling Accord would do on a good set of summer tires.
While there's certainly capacity to get bad mpg with the GTI, my '22 DSG regularly gets 40+ hwy mpg. Excellent daily.
A mildly interesting experiment, but I'm still picking the GTI all day every day. Plaid seat!
The prime is where it is at can't wait until nightshade/gr prius/priusprime
Get the sway bars coming. Also is there anyway to eek out anymore horsepower?
I only wish you gave us what fuel economy YOU GUYS are currently getting in the GTI right now to directly compare with how much better the Prius actually is on MPGs
It would have been interesting to see but I can guarantee it wouldn’t have been better than what we see in the Prius. Even on our low end with the Prius we’re still above what the GTI is rated at.
@phattyhales it still would have been nice to compare. If I drive nice I can get ridiculously good fuel economy out of this car. I really love the ground making sure I stay under 70 miles per hour on the freeway I can cruise at 40 miles per gallon and end up in the mid thirties or even closer to 40 Mi per gallon at the end of a road trip with some stops for Taco Bell. First time I drove the car starting at 500 me when I picked it up in georgia, driving all the way back up through to central Michigan I averaged 37 miles per gallon with 4 Taco Bell stops, a bathroom break and a 20-mile off freeway detour to spend the night at my grandma's and I was playing with the different modes (sport normal eco comfort) at different points while running the air conditioner cuz it was mid July.
@@NoZenithAre those real, calculated fuel economy figures? Or are you just reading the fuel economy estimate off of the gauge cluster screen?
@sawyermartin4434 well I only had put four tanks through it, but it coincided really well with what was reading on the head unit. My car does a long-term and a per fuel tank fuel economy estimate. I will be very honest here and say I have not been keeping up with documenting how many gallons I get and what the mileage is like I used to to get the real numbers but I feel I get slightly less fuel economy now than I used to because perhaps I'm not driving as nicely as I did back then. As I understand it the mechatronic unit, which is the computer that actually shifts the dual-clutch gearbox, actually has some kind of learning software so it will actually change slightly how it works to compensate for your driving Style and while I'm not a dick in traffic, I kind of point and go and don't stress over accelerating haha. I'm almost exclusively City driving at this point and have bare minimum 6 stops in my nine mile trip 6 days a week to work with as many as 10 stops depending on what lights I hit or don't hit. According to the head unit I'm averaging anywhere between 27 and 30 miles per gallon but I was kind of running behind several days last week and rushing to work so that definitely pulls my fuel economy back a bit
Did the ride improve with the new tires? The stock "low rolling resistance" tires are very stiff. The new tires should improve ride harshness too.
Are the new wheels/tires lighter than the OEM?
Would love to see Prius prime on good tyres
Where was the video taken? (such a beautiful mountains)
yeah... they are nuts
GRius with the 300hp Rav4 Prime drivetrain please. Or I guess you could lower the Rav4 a bit.
Iwant The New Prius - now with less suckiness to drive! Let's find coilovers, BBK, sways, and the seats from a gt86 ! And maybe an ECU tune, headers, cat bypass and straight thru exhaust, Can you hot rod electric motors/ batteries? Asking for a friend
Absolutely, and I know a guy😉 who will manual swap the shitty transmission (to a civic one, obvs) for ya!
So what’s the biggest wheel and tire combo that can fit?
@everydaydriver I'm ready to buy a prius now. For enthusiast not wanting to spend for the Prime, is the awd quicker or better in any way than the 2wd model. I'm not really worried about snow, so just wondering if there was an advantage.
Tbh you're better off just sticking with the FWD model and using the money you saved to either get a new tire+wheel package or just replacing the tires with something wider and stickier like the Michelin Cross Climate 2
Whaaat? A fun Prius, how this possible?
What mileage did the GTI get over the same loop?
Hmmm, that would be a really interesting number to see.
This is my only question from the whole video! I drive a 2018 GTI Autobahn so I've got the Eco Mode so I can easily pull 30mpg average daily driving (or switch it to normal mode and have a blast in traffic) if I'm even reasonably nice and drive like I don't have as much torque available. I can cruise on the freeway at nearly 40 miles per gallon as long as I'm not going up into the Hills. I want THEIR actual mpgs for as direct a comparison as can be made.
@@NoZenith Indeed GTI's can get pretty darn good mpg's. Driving on 2 lane 65mpg hwy's I've gotten 43mpg. Hybrids only do well in city driving. MIxed driving tends to be around 26-28mpg, except on California gas.
@@NoZenith Your numbers, and that of @jeffk464 are impressive, and to be fair and accurate we need Paul & Todd's numbers to take out the driver and driving method factor. What are the numbers when both are being hooned by the same person. But since it was a private car I doubt they had it long enough to find out.
@rdiamond655 ooooh I forgot it wasn't a long term like the Prius. That makes sense because they wouldn't have probably went through a full tank borrowing it for a weekend.
They should be doing this comparison with the Prius Prime & the GTI.
Hopefully Toyota is watching.
I overheard that some of the Corolla Cross parts can fit.
Was on the Internet , so must be true.
