    This thorough series has given me the confidence to restore my new-to-me 301! The tension set screw inside the machine will not budge. It is sunk much deeper than your depiction on your machine. Any advice how to get it loose? Thank you so much!

      p.s. the stud is vertical not horizontal and yes, the spring was broken

      Hi! I think some of the screws were deeper set than others depending on the year of the machine but I could be wrong. The only advice I can offer is penetrating oil and maybe even hitting it with some heat. Sometimes you can fit the screwdriver into the slot on the screw and give the handle a couple light taps to break free the crud. And of course, lay the machine on the hand wheel so you can get some downward pressure on the screw. Finally, if you can't get it out you can still remove every other part except the stud and replace the spring and whatever else is needed. If the stud is vertical than horizontal I still believe that you would be able to zero out the tension and it will work without any issues. Let me know if you are still stuck or need further help!

    Great tutorial and learned so much. I have a whit featherweight and have tried to look up how to clean it up any idea were I might find a UA-cam? love your step my step on your tutorials after watching them I might try one of them. . I purchased my Featherweight about 15 years ago and keep up the some of the maintenance by oil at least every 3 months. I have had it in the repair shop for a good clean up but would love to try some of your DIY’s. What would be the best one to try first?

      Glad you are watching! The white featherweights are a little different, inside and out. The bed extension doesn't come off and it doesn't have the same gears on the inside, it has a belt. It is also wired differently, I am sure you already know all of this. When you oil your machine, make sure not to get oil on that belt. It can't be replaced. But, they were made to last a really long time so it should be fine. As far as cleaning the white featherweights, the paint isn't as sensitive to chemicals as the black ones. You can use a wet cloth over the machine and then wipe it dry right away. I have used rubbing alcohol on stubborn stains on the white ones and it never has harmed the finish. Use a good wax when you are done and it should look like new! You should be able to remove the hand wheel, needle plate and feed dogs as well as the hook the same way as I do in my Featherweight tutorial I am working on now. If I had to recommend a video to do first I would recommend this one: ua-cam.com/video/rvt5Ob2i7Lg/v-deo.html

    hello! greatly appreciate this series. I removed the tension assembly piece by piece, and then the set screw. However, the tension stud is stuck fast. any advice?

    • @SewingMachineRehab
      @SewingMachineRehab  7 місяців тому

      Hi! If your tension stud is stuck then you can place the last piece that goes on the tension, the little thumb screw, back on the stud and then use the opening at the end of the stud like a screw slot. (If that makes sense) Use a screwdriver in the opening at the end and see if you can get it to twist a little. (Never try this without that little thumb nut on the stud) It will help to drop some penetrating oil down where the stud is pressed into the body as well. Finally, if I have one that is really stuck I will grip it with some non marring pliers at the vey base, up closet to the body of the machine and try to get it free that way. I hope that helps!

    Thank you so much for this series! It’s great! I could initially wiggle the needle bar. However it is stuck it won’t wiggle out. Any tips?

    • @SewingMachineRehab
      @SewingMachineRehab  Рік тому

      Hi! First, if it’s really dirty, try cleaning the exposed parts of the needle bar off, sometimes there is enough debris on them that they can’t fit through the bushings. Aero Kroil is excellent for this, work it into the bushings too. If that doesn’t work, you may be looking at a bent needle bar, usually towards the bottom where the needle clamp is. Nylon tip pliers may work to help you guide it out without hurting the needle bar. I have actually bent a bar back into shape while on the machine before I could remove it but you need to determine exactly where it is bent to do that. If it goes through the bushing fine and then stops at a certain point then that point is usually where the bend is. If that makes sense. Hopefully it’s just extra dirty!

    I have a question as to why you don't remove the bushings for the needle bar assembly?

    • @SewingMachineRehab
      @SewingMachineRehab  Рік тому

      Hi, that’s a great question! I don’t remove them because it’s normally not necessary. I would if I were painting the machine, or if the bushing had to be replaced because it was damaged. You use the bushing to set the height of your needle bar…so installing it properly is important. You definitely can if you would like but in a normal situation I would say that the risk outweighs the benefits of removing it. That’s just my opinion 😊

    My set screw is sunk deeply into the bolt. I have to skip that. I hope skipping that part will not be too bad.

      If you can't remove the tension stud it's not the end of the world. If you can get the pin out of the stud and make sure that it is cleaned up you should be ok. You need a slender screwdriver to get all the way to the screw, it is very recessed. But, if it is just stuck then I would clean it in place and hopefully the stud is turned in the right direction when you reassemble. Good luck!
