Bob Fowler sent us over to you! Thanks for all this great detail. I have my Mom's 301a that she taught me to sew on 50 years ago. I had it professionally tuned up. Now I'm really glad I'll be able to maintain it myself, between you and Andy Tube and Bob Fowler. Thank you!
Thanks for saying hi! How cool that you have your mom’s machine, I hope to get the one I learned on one day. Glad you will be able to service yours now!
Also - it is nice to see the presenter occasionally! And thanks for using this to teach us even more, like the special pliers.
Jen - Eexcellent technique to explain what each part does as you remove it and to show each part and the collection of parts that constituted sub-assembly. Very helpful in understanding how the machine works as well as how to service it.
Thank you!
Love your videos! Everyone has problems with anything. I say bravo to you sharing your experience with us. And thank you very much for fantastic videos! You are appreciated! I would not have been able to restore my 301 without YOU!
Thank you! So glad you are following along and restoring your 301, good job!
Mistakes? they happen- to all of us! As any good teacher will tell you, that's one of the best ways to learn. Will add that tool to my list.
Great videos, I couldn't do this project without!
Oh my gosh, your videos are awesome. So detailed and easy to follow. Even your confession of saying you damaged a screw and how you got it out was inspiring! I to watch Bob Fowler. Please keep doing these. I am partway through the 301 restoration, but am hoping you cover how to remove the stitch regulator plate. I have seen gobs of gunk behind mine and cannot figure out how to get in there
Thank you so much for your encouraging words! Sounds like you found the video you were looking for! :)
Hi I enjoy watching a fellow restorer of these fine old machines. I would like to suggest another tool to have in your arsenal and that is the hollow ground screwdriver kit made by Chapman mfg in Durham,Ct -part number 9600 they are designed for sewing machines and will not damage screws as easily as tapered screwdrivers. It’s the same ones you see Bob Folwer and Andytube use they are very reasonable at around 40$ even includes a ratchet handle for the times things are really tight, hope that helps you. Great videos keep them coming
Thank you! I have been meaning to order a set but kept forgetting. In the video coming soon where I reinstall the thread take-up, you will see why I finally remembered to order them. :)
👍
Woohoo! glad you got it out!
Thanks to you!
Thank you for sharing the entire journey on restoration! I have had a couple screws that I damaged trying to unscrew them. Luckily, nothing serious, but I did shear off small slivers of metal despite using the correct size screwdriver.
You are so welcome! Yes, it happens sometimes. If you need to you can use a foam nail file to polish up the heads of the screws. Even with the right size screw driver they can still be very stubborn!
Just a quick note. Along with putting some penetrating oil on a tight screw or bolt, after letting it sit, apply a bit of heat with a hair dryer and it can help loosen up some of that oil oil and crud.
Great job on your videos, looking forward to more. ( I watch Bob Fowler too, excellent videos also).
I am having an issue with the pressor foot bar, it is completely stuck! Once I get it freed, I will continue on with this tutorial! Cheers :)
Hi, hope you got it free! Thanks for watching!
Maybe this will help: I used Kroil penetraing oil on the presser foot knob and it finally came loose. I gave it a little squirt 2 days in a row.
Going to attempt the same process on my 1954 306K!
I hope it worked out well for you!
Hi Jen, have you removed and replaced the presser bar and needle bar bushings on a 301 before? Both of mine are rusted but I can't seem to get them unstuck after removing the set screws. Is there a trick to this?
Hi! I have one time, usually it isn’t necessary. Getting them back in at the right height is critical, especially the needle bar bushing. I have found it isn’t always worth the extra step. For rust (which is rare) I use a fine grit sand paper to polish it off and if it is inside the bushing I wrap the sandpaper around a dowel and twist it inside the bushing. Usually the inside doesn’t have rust, just brown varnished oil that needs to be removed. If you decide to tap out the bushings I am sure I don’t need to tell you to stay away from metal hammers. If it’s not too late to clean them in place that is what I would advise. If you think you have a unique rust situation please send me pictures to jen@sewingmachinerehab.com
I am restoring my mothers old 301 and it worked when I tried it out. The press or foot and bar is not moving at all. Rust! Any suggestions how to free it?
Hi! I would try soaking it with a penetrating oil like Kroil. It may need to soak for a day or so. Then remove as much of the rust and debris as you can while the bars are still in the machine, clean all that parts of them you can see. A good pair of non marring pliers should help you in gripping the bars and twisting them free, I hope that helps!
Hi again. I’ve begun to restore my 301A. I cannot remove the presser bar. It is very tight. I’ve tried oil followed by WD40 that I sprayed 3 times yesterday and left it overnight. I’ve removed the screw but no help there. Do you have any other suggestions? I dare not use a tool on it for fear it would break or be harmed. Help.
Wow that hair dryer worked it’s charm. All I had to do was read down on the list, note to self.
Hi! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner but....You figured it out! Great job! Also, I can't recommend the Kroil penetrating oil enough. WD-40 just can't compare so if you plan on doing more than one machine, you will want that in your tool box! Keep up the good work!
@@SewingMachineRehab Thank you for your response. The latest is the bobbin adjustment. Wow that is tight but I'm going to look for the Kroil penetrating oil today. I purchased my 301 for $400 and I think I paid too much but I love it anyway. Looking forward to putting it all back together. I think it will be a while though.
