Hello JJ. I have been watching your channel for quite a long time now. I have had a large interest in your take on Canadian and American Politics, even though I am not in anyway considered a conservative. I truly love learning so many new things from your channel every week. I value individual liberty and equality over practically all else; however, I have never lost sight on how grateful I am for the sacrifices those before me had to make so I may have the many opportunities available to me now. Technically, I am a little bit more left-leaning, but I tend to be as I absolutely neutral as possible. I prefer stepping back and finding well informed solutions to complex problems over the nuance bickering and hee-hawing of the current political climate. I would attest my politics to my personality and social life. My family has never been stable or had much money, but we always have had a high value on work and education. My living through the plight of socioeconomic inequality has led me to be more liberal, but my value of education and hard work has led me to be objective in looking for real solutions to the tough questions. Thanks for making these amazing videos. I appreciate your input on the issues you speak about. Keep up the great work!
I believe the sudden rise of conservatism is for the most part reactionary! The reason I say this is because the left had these groups under there umbrella such as Black Lives Matter, modern third wave feminist movement, and the LGBTQ+ these groups were getting more and more outspoken about white people and right wingers and this created a culture war of sorts and anybody who wasn't really sure about there political ideology just suddenly became conservative because they saw conservatives as there allies and had a common enemy. Those are my thoughts anyway!
@@dylanwilliams4459 A bit of a generalization, for example, I'm against a lot of left leaning groups, yet I also support a lot of left leaning positions (enviornmentalism, veganism, social safety nets, centralized public services ((like free health care and education)), social and gender equality for women AND men). The problem is that a lot of radical feminists and race activists/supremacists come from a philosophy I fundamentally disagree with, which usually veers way past liberalism and head first into Marxist socialism and communism. These philosophies inevitably create oppressive societies. These are not people you can trust with power because they don't act on principle, which is often why they are called hypocrites and contradictory. Their ideas sound good on paper but never hold up under scrutiny. There isn't much I want to conserve, I just don't want these people in power.

Most of what you just wrote sounds like that standard talking points I hear from conservatives, yet none of them have ever been able to explain how these social issues relate to Marxism in any way
Conservatism (like any political ideology) is good, but problems arise when people start using it as an identity, when people start seeing it as some sort of sports team that they need to root for, when people become more focused on their ideology winning than actually discussing the merits of one's position. Not everyone is 100% conservative, not everyone is 100% liberal, and not everyone is 100% centrist.
any one ideology by itself won't do a good job of keeping itself in check. it takes representation of the whole political spectrum (maybe not so much the violent extremes) to have a good chance of representing the will of the people, whilst also not voting away the future of that government for one more term in office.
This is very true and what I believe modern democracy (at least in countries like Canada and the US) has fallen into. The right and left are more concerned with battling each other and identity politics rather than serving the country.

I have seen you twice in the comments already, and all of the times, every time someone points a flaw about conservatism, you jump all enraged to point out the flaws of leftism. I'll second that. Very fair assessment, JJ. I find that conservatives are pretty much what you said, and also a bit territorial, generally speaking. In the here and now, wrt these new rebellious conservatives, technology shifts have created the type of knee jerk fear of the future that led unemployed blue collar workers in the rust belt to vote for 45 out of desperation for smthg new. I grew up near Windsor, so I saw some of the despair firsthand. Including one 50 smthg year old homeless man who was laid off just a few years before he was due to retire from his comfy job in auto manufacturing. I heard stories like this every few days for several years (2008 through about 2014, and longer on the other side of the border. Hell, they're still suffering in MI.) I'll add that youtube culture and Gamergate, which overlapped with the views of the 4 horsemen of new atheism or w/e they call themselves led to a good deal of this reactionary alt right nonsense. I can understand why, at times. I've been on the receiving end of some of that airy fairy leftish preaching about rape victims, animal rights and evil capitalists. GAH. Those Trigglypuff feminists get under my skin, too. And *I am* an oldschool feminist. Blah blah ing about dismantling all forms of gvt (which frankly is just not going to happen, no matter how many times we click our heels together and shout "I DO BELIEVE IN FAIRIES!" :P) hollering rape every time some guy looks sideways at me, and starving myself on soya products will not get rid of the corruption in the world. There are vets rotting in homeless shelters so whacked out on their PTSD symptoms that they can't even find a hospital, and that scum gets $10.5 million. That has to be one of the worst injustices I've seen in Canada in years. The pipeline deal is a bit yucky, but forgivable in light of the fact that there was a nasty mess to clean up with that, and no easy solutions. Same with the Bombardier bailout. Corporate welfare... blah. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it makes things worse. I guess we have to wait and see. I'm a bit disappointed with the rebranded NAFTA deal. Trudeau should have stuck to his guns with that Tommy Lee Jones wannabe and told the Americans where they could put their stupid Factory Farmed milk. And I'll figure out how to grow my own frikkin cauliflower before I pay $7 a head for it :P We have everything we need to be self sufficient, without American interference. We need to back away from the Americans, especially now that they have an unstable nutjob for a president. Other than that, Trudeau's Liberals have done ok. They're the lesser of the evils, imo. Agreed, Ideally i would love liberalism/socialism on the left to be the driver of change while the conservative party is the bastions of cutting the fat; working out efficiency issues, balancing the budget and whatnot. But the tribalism is so bad they can never even agree to work on something together. Compound that with conservatism being so fundamentally against the governement having any part in solutions (just let the free market do it!) its impossible now to have these kinds of colaberations.
From what I understand, communist nostalgia stems from the communal aspect of the ideology, since few people living under communist dictators had any way to realize the bigger picture. Most of these people, if asked, will freely admit that communism is terrible for developing a society, and will recognize the atrocities that they now know all about, but it wasn't nearly as clear to them while under those dictators. Instead, they remember living in a very tightly knit community where material wealth (and especially money) wasn't nearly as important, which is all a very attractive way of living for some people. Additionally, those who grew up in this sort of society will especially be subject to the radical changes that have occurred in their lifetimes, not being as used to materialism, the emphasis on money, and capitalism in general. A great deal of people miss being part of a tightly knit community where globalism and capitalism and materialism wasn't a big deal, and they can not be faulted for that.

JJ literally represents a minority of conservatives, like myself, which I can’t ever find more of. I’m a conservative with what I consider to be a very “liberal” personality so I often get so turned off by many people on my side. I get to the same conclusion as them but for very different reasons.

I think Canadians are just more "chill" than Americans generally. I think it comes from their political system. When you have a parliament instead of a congress, your politicians have to compromise a lot more.
As a member of Gen Z that gets to vote in the upcoming 2019 election, I appreciate your videos and your honesty. It's quite difficult to learn about the Canadian political system on the Internet without encountering very biased information. I like your effort to stay neutral and to inform.

Branden Brebric I think there is for certain climate change no doubt. It’s not all that bad in Canada but it’s only getting worse worldwide. Especially because of the emissions coming from places like China, Iran and Russia and to a degree the United States are super high compared to Europe and Canada. So it exists and it’s not bad right now, but it’s only getting worse due to China, Russia, Iran and the USA.
@Smash Effectx I won't speak for him, but most people classifying themselves as a socialist consider necessities like healthcare, education, etc to be better managed by the government where profit isn't an incentive; believing that it's harder for the free market to act properly on things that you have to buy which are limited in competition or where it's easier for a monopoly to grow (generally speaking) aka health care is essentially a tax that must be payed, so you might as well have the government run it so prices aren't artificially hiked, there isn't a middle man, and peoples health/emergencies are the incentive and priority. At least that is the theory
@Smash Effectx In a working market quality tends to go up while prices naturally go down because otherwise products would lose their demand especially when there are competing products that don't or aren't incentivized to work together. However when you have no choice but to buy a product (aka demand is always there) often competition ends up limited and priorities become faulty (for example people with money often are prioritized over people needing treatment immediately)

@Smash Effectx and socialisim is against the private ownership of the means of production because the capitalists and owners profit by taking a part of the value of workers labour because the workers are the ones who are doing every thing from building the factory to working in it to marketing and everything so capitalists are kind of dictators because they have full control of the company and they take profit but don't do work or maybe the work in the company but because the own the company they gain much more than any other person in the company who might be working harder than them
When I was younger I considered myself a moderate. I have conservative values in the way of being grateful of who I am, what I am, and where I am, and thinking that those things are not inherently bad. But I also recognize that certain aspects of American reality do not live up to the American ideal. So politically I am considered a liberal simply because I want a country who proclaims justice for all to - well, provide justice for all. I sometimes wonder if in other countries I’d be considered a conservative.
The democratic party is (at least its politicians are) for sure center-right in terms of the world. Most Americans views are further left than they think they are and vote like they are due to this skewed Overton Window

I'm not conservative but I love hearing JJ's perspective and attitude. If more people on BOTH sides of the political spectrum could be as level headed and open minded as JJ, the world would be a lot better place. Watching his videos has certainly made me a much more open minded person when it comes to handling people I disagree with politically.
Your problem is the rather insulting assumption that other people haven't been 'open minded'. I think Conservatives are a bunch of cunts because they by definition behave like that. You might float through life barely aware of whats happening or what anything means but not everyone does.
I'm not a conservative and identify as a socially progressive leftist. I like your take on conservatism and the ability to differentiate between personality leanings and intellectual leanings in politics. My mantra has been the same that we should work towards a society that thinks for itself and not go into a cult of personality. We should try to understand the bias on both sides and listen and empathize with people who engage in a non-toxic respectful way.

Yeah exactly. My philosophy on life has always been "anything is okay as long as you're not hurting yourself or the people around you psychologically, physically, mentally, or emotionally" There are a lot of extremist conservative ideas that I just hate, especially the portion of them that hate on black people or the LGBTQ+ community. And it gets even worse with religion. I'm atheist, but I do think that historically religion is a very big and important part of human culture that should be preserved, and I really do think that there are many good morals and values that can be taught by religion. I just hate it when people go full cultist mode and start praying to a divine figure and building altars for them, or when they use a book that's thousands of years old to prove their points or even excuse their horrendous acts. As I said, I'm okay with religion, I do think that it's important for history and culture. But please, don't be an extremist about it, in fact, just don't be an extremist about anything in general. As someone whose part of the LGBTQ+ community, there are A LOT of extremely toxic and downright crazy people here. There are teenagers here who believe that religion should be eradicated or that throw massive temper tantrums just because someone didn't ask them for their pronouns( on that note, I don't mean to sound offensive towards anyone who puts great value on their pronouns. Just understand that not everyone is educated about these topics, and that's mainly fault of the educational system, not them. The most that the average person knows about are gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Some people don't even know about trans genders and trans sexuals, and let's not even begin to talk about the massive amounts of other minorities like non-binaries, asexuals, pansexuals, etc. So if someone uses your wrong pronouns, please just ask them nicely to use the ones you're comfortable with, please don't throw temper tantrums over it)
I'm left-leaning, and I enjoyed this video. I am kind of rebellious, but I do believe in respect for (proper) authority. I also believe you have the freedom to disrespect authority, but I believe this should only be the case when you have legitimate grievances, precluded also with an authority figure who is unwilling to listen to criticism. Everything's a conversation, nothing should be off-limits, and nothing should be taken for given without proof. I will always seek to be respectful to people in person, even those I disagree with, but I will not hesitate to call people out when they profess views that I find to be harmful to people.
The interesting thing about that is that you could have started the sentence prefacing that you are right leaning and it still would make perfect sense, points at least nominally to some more universal values that, most people, tend to share perhaps

@flmvdvsrg The whole American political system is shifted to the right considerably, and the mainstream Democratic Party is centrist by the rest of the world's standards. As such, you'll find that conservatives in other countries tend to be far less radical, the center to be far more populated, and the left to be much more in line with a Bernie Sanders mentality than, for example, a Barack Obama-like one.

Lord Farquaad the Democratic Party is all but extreme. They’re literal centrist. The only extremist in America are the conservatives when compared to the rest of the world. In the rest of the world, conservatives would be more like democrats here. This isn’t even my opinion. It’s just a literal fact just like earth being round. I will say though, the Democratic Party is very corrupt, but so are the republicans so it doesn’t really mean anything. Both parties are terrible, corrupt, and pretty much the same, but one is in the center and the other is extremely to the right. You’re just choosing which leg you’d rather get kicked by. Anyways, the point is that conservatives in America are objectively extremists while the democrats are centrist. That doesn’t mean I like either though.

@@audiobooksproject4829 I'd rather not take Pat Buchanan's definition of anything, thank you very much. He's certainly part of the group of conservatives that just happen to say a lot of socialist and illiberal things all the time (Candace Owens is another great example)
I agree I think the biggest problem is this insane sense of pessimism in modern American conservatism. I personally know of people who have completely conservative stances, yet wouldn’t call themselves conservatives because of all the bitterness and exclusion within the current movement. Conservatism should be based around the fact that we have it good and should appreciate all the work it took to get us as far as we are. For people who aren’t pessimistic nihilists it should be a no brainer to be conservative. And yet now in America, both the liberals and conservatives are totally plagued with pessimism and anti Americanism. People who just enjoy life and the country feel like they’re politically homeless.

I’d like to point out one thing, liberals aren’t left wing. They have an economically right wing system and socially left wing one, but since the economically right wing system that they believe in is farther right then the socially left wing ideals, they are still right wing, if only by a margin. At best it’s centrist.

@@ridanann I agree that small republics are preferable to large, mostly undemocratic ones. However, I strictly disagree with your posture towards radical ideology. History has shown the negative effects of radical ideology and has shown the fruitfulness of moderate powers. I agree doing nothing and not talking about big issues is a problem, but just what ARE big issues? These so called big issues are merely pathos-driven babble created by the far left and far right as being much more important than the running of the state. Abortion rights? Gun rights? These are all distractions from innaction in the government caused by the duopoly of partisan forces.while these problems are important, yes, they pale in comparison to the failure of our government to adress any need quickly and effectively. I'm a progressive liberal, who isn't afraid to break from the left wing norm. For example, I was very upset at the way Democrats handled the Kavanaugh nomination. In the U.S., you are innocent until proven guilty. The accusers had the burden of proof, and I didn't see much come from them in terms of concrete evidence. But I digress. I'm the same! I tend to be quite left leaning and agree have positive views on stuff like socialism and refugees, but I really think the Kavanaugh situation was handled horribly.
I was raised in an Italian-Peruvian family and living in both countries (childhood and early adolescence in Italy, adolescence in Perú) gave me different views about politics (economical and social). At 14 I got attracted to communism because of the rebel nature and because some guys were promoting events outside the high school. Then, when I read about red terrorism in Italy (70s) and Perú (80s-90s) I turned very anti communist. Only at 18 I started developing a more critical thinking about political views and nowadays I consider myself a conservative with some left wing views (more on certain social politics). I could say a liberal, in a very European way. The problem nowadays is that, with the modern edgy and toxic path many "conservatives" have taken, rational things such as anti-racism, anti-sexism and basic respect for the different are seen as "left wing". Basic respect, for me, is a matter of education and empathy, not political leaning. I'm very disgusted by how modern political debate turned so extremist, polarized and sometimes superficial. p.s.: great video, JJ. Your unbiased views are what really miss in the current political debate.

I am a very freedom-oriented and rebellious person, so I tend to hold positions such as support for freedom of expression and freedom-respecting software. I don't really have a strong position outside of that, except for a vague notion that capitalism - at least in its current form - is not perfect because of its poor treatment of workers and the tendency of corporations to monopolize (and violate the aforementioned freedoms).

I grew up around racist people who engaged in the behavior where they would denounce anything that didn't apply to them. They would be disgusted by anything empowering towards minorities, gays, women, other religions etc. I broke out of the conditioning years ago and I have lost most of those people as friends (best thing ever). It started out with me simply asking questions on why they thought the way they did... But by the 2020 election my once best friend said fuck it and told me I need to get over things like racism. "Just dont let it bother you, just ignore it". Btw I'm biracial, he is white. I was telling him how someone at my job who was trying to be funny called me a slur, the coworker then played victim when I told him I didnt like it and it was disrespectful. This was the 2nd instance with the same guy, but my friend took his side and said I was being a snowflake, while he was going off about how racism only exists for white people now because slavery already ended and now blacks and gays are in more movies and are trying to replace white people. Sure, I know not all conservatives think this way, but I've met way too many of them who think like this. Everytime I meet another one I feel like I go a smidge more to the left. Right wingers now assume I'm an anti cop, anti white flag burner just because I'm left wing now, snowflakes on both sides. Politics is an ugly game. Telling a POC to get over racism wont get you invited to the next barbecue. I enjoy my chill conservative friends who can actually hold a friendly conversation instead of spewing toxic ignorance.

I'm a Liberal (I prefer the term Progressive but that's not important), I've been told that I'm easy going and somewhat quiet in person (though I've gone on a few rants while on UA-cam). Sometimes I do have the urge to go and express my belief on something, but I'd rather do it in a civil conversation than a yelling match. To me, the true ideals of a liberal is to support the equality of all people under the law and society regardless of ethnic background, religious background, cultural background, etc. I believe there does need to be changes in law and social norms, but I also believe there are many things that should stay the same. I don't support the loud and arrogant who go screaming at people to think one way and one way only (this is true for both Liberals and Conservative). Most importantly, and this is something that I would believe regardless of the political spectrum, people should be aloud to think for themselves and follow their ideals as long as they do not hurt or put down others. We shouldn't insult or blame each other we should act calmly and kindly to one another. J.J. you're a really cool guy and you should be allowed to be a Conservative regardless of what other think.

Yeah, but the olds are a much bigger group. But they're also, in some ways, less visible, because the mass media tends to be more interested in young people. So a lot of people these days think the young conservative rabble-rousers are like, the leading energy in the movement (which my video kind of suggested, in fact) when really, it's mostly a lot of Fox News-watching grandpas.

Dylan Iaquinta one thing I’ve noticed is that as you get older, your standards just sort of decline and you become so fixed in your beliefs you don’t really care much about arguments anymore. So Trump’s popularity with the GOP base has never really surprised me all that much. I don’t think a lot of older conservatives are all that interested in whether he represents a “break with Reaganite orthodoxy” or whatever. He ran against Hillary Clinton, who is like, the ultimate ancient enemy of aging conservative voters, as determined by a logic they settled on a quarter-century ago. The more I think about, she really was the worst possible candidate they could have picked.
I’ve grown up conservative by my family. During my early 20s, however, around the time 2016 came in, of course I’ve delved into the left-leaning social media posts without having much knowledge on the consequences of such liberal ideologies/labels. Around 2020, naturally, I started discovering right-leaning or libertarian accounts on social media. I deleted social media due to the censorship of a lot of information during that time. During those times, I’ve been researching information instead to form my own perspective on things. I now primarily looked at UA-cam as my sort of social media. All in all, you could see that my political viewpoints stem depending on where I look at on social media which made some influence based on my personality. Currently, I’ve been looking into Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, and now you, for example as my source of “guide” into looking at information from a new light. I’m almost 26, still conservative, but I try to be more cautious and knowledgable about politics nowadays and not to be entirely influenced by everything.

I see liberals tend to victimize people and it really brings people down and doesn't motivate them to grow because they think the system is aganced them. You can say all those things are true even if you swap the words liberal and conservative. When it comes to people who are not in a place in their lives that they can, for various reasons, be independent it doesn't mean they don't want to. Also many social programs that are usually unwanted by conservatives are actually helping the people who don't have to use them because what is good for the peace in your community whether it is local, national, or world is good for all. When society rots around you, you're effected. When society thrives around you, you are affected. When people around you are happy and healthy the world you live in is better than one that isn't. Its amazing how far the world changed in the last hundred years because of social program and more access to and better healthcare. I know many people who wouldn't be alive today and that makes it all worth it to me. I am very greatful and I can't wait to see how much better things can be when we lift each other up because that's how we all got to where we are. Independent or not the society has only come so far because of how we came together and cooperated. Just think about how a grocery store works with many to make things so convenient. If you had no store to put together everything in on place. It's less waste of resources like time and money. That's what society is about in a nutshell.
Eric Light I was abused as a child, from the age of nine to twelve. In my conservative country people tell you to suck it up. Because fighting back it’s a “disobedience to authority” (usually people in authority to you do such things). You seem to contradict yourself. A person should not be a victim, should move on and grow up. Why then don’t you forget about being abused in the first place? Or we indeed *have to* punish people for their wrongdoings to then move on? Make up your mind. When conservatives say suck it up and move on it’s about you shutting the fuck up and forgetting everything without attacking whomever is responsible for that. In their opinion for marginalized groups being strong is just being tolerant to what they let other people do to them, steal, rape, murder, etc. Basically “keep being a victim”. So the question is, do you want to keep being one or you want to stop putting up with that? Because people mention what happened to them not to whine but to make it clear they won’t let it happen again, to make it known they are aware that what has happened is illegal.
If a system doesn’t let a person grow, a person breaks it and creates a new system. Simple as that. And yes, sitting on your ass all day and whining won’t change anything. Victims do exist because abusers do exist. The only question when are those people be brave enough to start fighting back. As one writer said “you shouldn’t be quiet of what it going on or they’ll kill you and tell everyone you enjoyed it”.
I remember reading about former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, a republican, and how he always said that he was "conservative with money but liberal with people," which I have always found to be a good form of conservative politics. These days it seems like you can't be a progressive or a liberal without supporting socialism and communism and you can't support capitalism or be economically conservative without being a hateful bigot.
I like Eisenhower alot, but tbh do kind of disagree. I personally would like to have more social programs like a healthcare system, which does involve increasing taxation. Though I do respect the opinion of not doing that.
I would say that the phenomenon of people with rebellious personalities becoming more conservative also has something to do with a shift in what is seen as “mainstream culture” in the past 30 years (at least in America). For most of the 20th century, I would say that most media “personalities” that were considered mainstream (writers, movie stars, talk show hosts, etc.) were fairly conservative, at least on the basis of supporting traditional cultural values and opposing left-wing economic policies that were associated with communism. This would lead to the rebellious-type people being drawn to left-wing ideologies, the extremes of these being socialism, communism, or anarchism. However, starting in the 1990s but especially from the 2000s onward, this began to shift and mainstream cultural figures have begun to support more left-wing cultural and economic positions (of course less extreme versions, but socialism became more acceptable than it once was). As a result, the position one would take to rebel against the system is now more likely to manifest itself in right wing ideas, like classical liberalism, conservatism, or at the most extreme forms of fascism or the alt-right.
As a liberal I care about the environment and I care about the legalisation of weed and I care for Medicare for all and free college tuition and believe renewable energy is the way to go(no I don't wanna rush it and raise the gas prices like France did) and ending the wars. I prefer to call myself a liberal conservative. I support a mix of liberal and conservative values. I am for affordable healthcare, but I am against high taxes. I am also a big supporter of the oil industry (even its expansion) as I believe it would give jobs and taxes.

I am a liberal but I used to identify as conservative. I used to be Mormon but I began doubting the religion when it conflicted with my sexuality. I looked into the history and left. Mormon's ideas are mostly conservative so it was an extension of my religion. Now that that wasn't relevant anymore and I was effectively rebelling I slowly adopted more liberal ideas over the next year.
I’d just like to say as someone leaning on the left, I grew up similar to you and I’m extremely grateful for everything I have, but i believe not only that we can get better but we should get better and while not all of the liberal policies are for that generally they do make the country a more balanced stable place where we can grow our economy without worrying about a war or smth. Declan Newton-Maharaj Here’s an example. “Democracy” as we understand it, has changed a lot over the centuries. Women and people of color, for instance, can now vote. I would say that a reform of this sort has helped preserve and strengthen democracy. We have conserved and strengthened the validity of our democratic system of government by making it more inclusive.
I have been recommended his videos quite frequently, as someone who sorta leans conservative but I don't really identify myself as such. I find that he does hold conservative values, but also is willing to sacrifice these values for social cohesion. That's fine if it is what you believe, but I think he will soon find that his whole world view has been burnt to ashes around him.

I think a good, super simplified breakdown of American conservatism vs. liberalism is their thoughts on the individual and community. Conservatives think what is good for the good is good for the gander, hence the focus on less taxes, less regulation, and individual freedom. Liberals, on the other hand, believe lifting up the community lifts up the individual z hence the focus on social services, high taxes on business and the wealthy, and collective freedom.

The competition between companies is what drive the prices down and bring development by forcing then to research new technologies that make the product cheaper. The more you have of an product compared to who need it, the lower it's value. The more apples in a Market compared to the desire to buy apples, the lower the value of apples. The same work for jobs, the more people can do a job, the lower it's value. The easier it is to replace a worker, the lower someone is willing to pay for said work. What drive salaries up the most is when one company compete with another company to hire the workers. Things like immigration and reproduction increase the number of workers. With universal basic income in place, companies will have to compete with said money. They will of course offer more money to the worker to create the desire for him to work. However to compensate their increased expenses, they will increase the price of the goods. Trying to pass the extra expenses to the consumer. If all companies do this, the value of the money will decrease. Inflation will turn the value of the basic income down. With time the universal basic income will became worthless. So let's say that someone to prevent this put price control with the universal basic income to prevent companies from increasing their prices. This will, of course, create both a scarcity and a black market. People will either stop producing or sell by a way higher price in secret. If you fully crack down the black market. Then nobody will want to start a business. No business and no industry means no jobs. If nobody produce anything it means that there will be no products like food. People will either do not open a new business, replace their workers with robots, or will move their business overseas. Here is some examples: 1) Venezuela started to crackdown and nationalize business, this resulted in the owners trying to sell their business in fear of losing everything, nobody opening new business, investors not wanting to invest in the country. This helped weakens Venezuelan economy, resulting in the oil industry becoming the only thing keeping the country up. 2) When a governor forced Mac Donalds to increase the salary of burger flippers in the South, Mac Donalds replied by firing then all and replacing then with machines. 3) The reason that Hollywood is where it is today is because it was cheaper to make a industry there, they where running away from Thomas Edison's patents and there where no such things like unions. Basically they went there because the government was pro-business. It's the same reason that companies move to China today, because it's cheaper and the people there has less rights. Now that Californians have the second biggest minimum wage and unions, the situation of the working class improved. However, this is resulting in the Movie Corporations fleeing the state, going to less cost states. With even movies being set in California not being filmed in California. Of course, if you try to fix the situation with taxes over the Movie corporations, which will be used to help the poor, you will end with then going to another country. Of course, other countries offering products that are cheaper than national products will result in forcing national companies to drop their prices or have reduced sales. (Most consumers always buy the cheaper item). Eventually, these National companies will also move overseas or close depending of how much money they are doing. Remember the same way that the majority of consumers will buy the cheaper, the majority of companies will produce where is cheaper. If a company offer too low money, the worker will refuse to work if he has better opportunities. If the profit margin is too little nobody will want to start a business. Of course, the worst situation that can happen to a market is a monopoly(According to Adam Smith, father of capitalism). Which is achieved when just one company stands, and nobody want or can create companies. The single company will be able to ask as many money as it want or offer products of as low quality as it want. And people will have no choice other than to buy it. Competition between companies is what drive the product quality up. The supply and demand works for everything, even money, the more the govern print money, the lower the value of the money became. You should also have in consideration that the value of the coin is important for international trade, countries where the money has less value will sell to countries where the money has more value. To understand the real value of the money, you must understand that the numbers in the money are meaningless abstractions. The real value of money(As defined by Adam Smith) is time. How much time you have to work to buy how much stuff. When new skills and technologies are developed due to competition, it will produce a resources that take less effort to produce, being cheaper. Yes, what I am saying is that capitalism is what caused the industrial revolution. As the salary of people became higher, the business owners started to replace then with machines. Then we have the private business vs government owned business, if the private business is not a monopoly, if there is competition, the private business will ALWAYS be better and of more quality than the government business. Why? Because if they are lower, they will eventually break. Meanwhile, the gov business is not competing with the other business because their payment will come no matter what. They have no interest to make a product of quality, because their revue come from taxes. This result in low effort and politicization of the business. For example, in Australia 60% of people use private health care despite the existence of a government health care, and the same repeat in every country with every company(Except Monopolies, Monopolies are as bad as the government, if not worst). Many people jump to socialism as the ultimate system, without taking any of those things in consideration and end up crushing their own economies. Every problem is way more difficult to solve than they look and there is no perfect solution. The best that we can do is balance socialism and capitalism, trying to grant good salaries to workers but not to scare the business owners away. To tell the truth, most people have just superficial knowledge, and do not stop to think about what the long term effects of their ideas will became.
I'm a conservative. I was raised in a religious household, that had a "meh stance on politics" I found my political ideology after going through a entirely socialist phase (NDP, Bernie Sanders, etc.) Came back after seeing what happened to Canada with Trudeau, and the recent tax hikes in BC with the NDP in power. I also looked into conservatism more and more, and with the help of your videos I have found my ground.

You don't even have to be religious to be conservative. However I was more interested in how the government functions and went from conservative to libertarian because of Austrian economics. Conservatism still has lot of government meddling.

I'm secular and pro free speech and gay rights which makes me the enemy in my country. But I'm also pro corporation and into lower taxes and western post-modernism scares me so I guess I'd be leaning to the right in the US for example.
I'm a conservative and I believe that everyone would agree on one thing that we should all do. Don't be an asshole towards other people. It's simple, but people forget about that so easily.

I liked the idea you mentioned about gratitude and how that goes hand-in-hand with a desire to help people who haven’t had the opportunities you’ve had be able to have those opportunities. Most traditions became that way because they work, including the tradition of forming a stable, supportive family. When that doesn’t work out for people, it causes a lot of heartbreak, and it’s an eternal effort both to help people see the value in those foundations and for us all to learn how to establish those in our own lives based on our own personalities, abilities and interests.
I've always had a very conservative personality, even when I was a leftist economically. I've always been very family oriented and was raised in a Christian household so I guess that's got something to do with it.

I wouldn't self-identify as a conservative, but I certainly wouldn't call myself left-wing either. I was born into a happy, stable, left-wing family and I held my family's political views until I was about 16 (which was about 3 years ago) when I realised I'd never decided what I believe for myself. I decided that, at heart, I'm really somewhat socially right-wing (if not fiscally) but I don't really want to go all the way. I think my views are entirely down to my personality and the way I was raised, but ultimately I think everyone's are. No one's politics are really objective, they're just reflections of who we are.
I used to be a "socialist Democrat" but in 2015, I just started realizing I was lying to myself about a lot I believed. Like economical things I actually knew nothing about but would bloviate to people and parrot talking points. I started reading philosophy and learning about America's enlightenment and I don't know that I'm a conservative especially, but I do get called right wing (among other things) a lot for understanding where a lot of people are coming from. It's possible to be empathetic as well as disagree. The older I get, the more conservative I feel, but it doesn't align well wuth ben Shapiro, though he does make me laugh sometimes. I sometimes say I'm libertarian, but that's silly too. I am a political hobo I spose.
What's really interesting is that libertarianism was originally a left wing ideology, that was admittedly stolen by the right wing. Murray Rothbard, a prominent economist from the Austrian school, admitted this in the mid 1970s around the time the modern right wing Libertarian Party was founded, though his book wasn't published until 2007. But the first use of the word "libertarian" as a personal political identifier was by Joseph Déjacque, a french socialist anarchist, in 1847. Basically the original left wing libertarians, in an extremely simple sense to put it, believe that personal liberty and voluntary association cannot be maximized without removing the tyranny of private enterprise as well as state tyranny, and to this effect, that we should engage in practices like workplace democratization. Labor unions are actually kind of the first step on this path, as they embody the most successful form thus far of trying to equalize or make more equitable the standing of the laborer in relation to the executive/corporatist.
I consider myself in the middle (I agree with some conservative ideas like pro-police and authority, but disagree with others like climate change), and I agree with this video 100%. I do think some modern conservatives are just trying to be rebels and are tired of being told what to think by things like modern media.
I'm a believer in Climate Change, but believe that there still so much we don't know about rather the Earth is warming or cooling. I read a article a while ago that claim that the ocean was cooling and the Arctic see a drop in temperature. Also couple months ago another article reveals that scientists find a error in measuring the change of the ocean temperature over the years (which I don't know how you can get that wrong, unless it including temperature that wasn't recorded pre-modern age, which in itself should be taken with a grain of salt). Also the amount of people that smerk at others for ridiculous claims (oh it snowing outside, that mean climate change is a myth) but then will do the same something when a heat wave or a hurricane hit a coast (this place never been warm before, that mean climate change is real).
I'm a conservative because I am distrustful of authority and the police. Being from a religious minority in a left wing state we saw a lot of suspicion and policing overreach in our lives simply because we homeschooled (not trusting public education), and we dressed differently and held more traditionalist views. My mother is from an Amerindian family that had been destroyed by welfare, her siblings never got jobs and lived a life a criminality because welfare enabled them to do so. And so, even though my family was poor, she rejected all government handouts and to this day, though I did not grow up with the best food, or clothes, or housing, I believe lacking that and knowing all that we had was earned, built character in myself. Within one generation, my mother brought herself from generations of poverty and drunkeness to having all her children be gainfully employed and... well not wealthy we are all upper lower class or lower middle class, but we have earned everything we have. Looking at our cousins who got the "better childhood" through welfare, they are prostitutes, drug dealers, and can't hold down a job. I want that kind of freedom for everyone who is able-bodied, to know that they earned their living, and not rely on the government. That is why I am conservative, because my mother's conservative values brought my family out of squalor.

Genuine question, I am a trans person. How am I supposed to understand or sympathize with conservatives when they have repeatedly striped me of basic human rights and continually fight accepting or acknowledging me?
Disclaimer, I am not a conservative, and I dont think you should be trying that hard to sympathies with people who treat you like that. But, understanding people is always worthwhile if only to properly talk to them to change their minds. It is important to understand that conservatives have lots of ideas about a lot of things. We (me, you and many others) can confidently say that their position on trans people is wrong, but that doesn't mean all of their ideas are wrong. Sometimes preserving the status quo is good, when things are going well for everyone. Its just that is rarely the case. Very few people fit any ideology perfectly, and you will find many conservatives who do not hold the "conservative" view on trans people, and those are the one you can and should try to understand/sympathize with. Realistically, everyone has some conservative views, and some liberal views, and some views from all over the political spectrum, and it often boils down to what ones you rank as the most important to you. Basically, its the idea that while we cant agree on all things, we can agree on some things. But just because we can find common ground does not make the fight for basic human rights any less pressing and immediate; so, such things often become the sticking point where you cant move on to finding the placed you agree on, until that disagreement is worked out.
Most conservatives nowadays(specially young ones) don't really care about what you do with your own life, they just want their freedom, basic individual rights and way of life respected. And also which rights have been taken from you?

So, in terms of rights, my biggest fear is that, as a gay American, the new makeup of the supreme court will take back my right to marry. So, please use the youtube comment system correctly, and ask the first commenter about the rights they are having taken away from them, not the person responding to that statement.

I think that the word should be more open minded, but modern liberal parties, at least in the US and Canada, accidentally push this notion backwards when they make policy decisions (not only economic ones but especially economic ones) that come off as anti-freedom and don’t address the issues at hand. E.g. implementing rent-control but not zoning reform (Toronto, California), supporting increasing school funding but not property tax and zoning reform (looking at you Chicago), funding homeless shelters but not auditing for corruption (WA, NY). A large portion of people do support or at least don’t oppose a more open minded position on the expansion of rights, but of that portion, many of those vote with their wallets.

I think the core of conservatism, at least in the US, is the strong emphasis on limited government and personal responsibility. Conservatives are less likely to believe in welfare, but more in family, community, and for some, religion. Very objective video though! Glad I found you.

We simply believe that any progress should be natural, organic, and evolve from the positive values and aspects of out society. Conserving those positives is where we got our name. I was conservative who flipped after seeing the rise of corporatism in the US. I like capitalism but it needs modifications to ensure its survival going forward or I fear you’ll see it collapse or become a failed corporate state in the future. I found that if people aren’t being exploited it’s very easy to vote conservative if you have something to protect but if you have nothing to lose it’s very easy to go the other way in millennials have massive debt and poor prospects couples with rising costs without adjustments to wages. I just don’t see that being good for capitalism going forward left untreated in the United States but boomers don’t seem to care because they will be dead before sh- hits the fan. My personality I’m a Virgo so I appreciate order structure and I do not like chaos. I was in the military which I excelled in because of the order structure attention to detail and the rules which plays into my political beliefs but only when I Have faith in the people I’m listening to and I have to have respect for them which is something that the military does well not so much on the civilian side of things I’ve noticed since transitioning out.
Voters need to see past themselves and their own *perceived* interests. At least care about their own grandchildren's lives, if not the nation as a whole.

Its simply one of those "only if it happens to me" type of situations. Not to knock on conservatives so much but, this tends to be what happens when they benefit from the status quo. I really enjoyed this video! The ugly side of modern conservatism in today's political discourse. People who are aligning with conservative parties are saying vile things and insulting people all over the interwebs just for the sake of it. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should!
There's a good software metaphor that you can see with apps on your phone. Problems are fixed, improvements are made, and then they get downloaded to your phone. You don't want to NEVER get updates, because then you miss out on the new features, and things that are broken don't get fixed. But, you also don't want to get new updates every day, that'd take away too much from the time you want to spend actually using your phone. So you need to have BOTH viewpoints and to ask BOTH sets of questions, "What is going well that we want to keep going well?" and "What isn't going well that we want to improve?". And in our political system (in the US at least), the conservatives tend to be more interested in "What is going well that we want to keep going well?" and the liberals tend to be more interested in "What isn't going well that we want to improve?" And here's the rub: YOU NEED BOTH! What is SUPPOSED to happen is that conservatives and liberals sit down and talk respectfully like adults and work together to figure out what is "the right amount of updates", and which things are "the most important to update". The sad thing is that seems to be getting less and less the reality, which is unfortunate.

Hearing you generally define a liberal made me think about how differently I think about the left wing than what you said. I am pretty similar to conservatives because I think at the moment I have it pretty good and I obviously don't want that to change, but I'm still a liberal because I recognize that not everyone has a similar situation to mine and we should help them and their place in society.
His definition of a liberal isn’t correct though and his definition of a conservative is a half truth. Being a liberal or progressive doesn’t mean your opposed to all things currently in place it means ensuring that the current system in place recognizes that all social classes, ethnicities, religions and sex/gender get the same rights as those who’ve always had them. It’s like gay people always existed but it’s only with progress the system now recognizes them (in terms of rights afforded to others). That didn’t happen because people at large somehow developed a conscious, it took activism over decades fighting for basic rights against “conservatism”. Governments for decades didn’t recognize certain civil rights for homosexuals, ethnic minorities and so on and that fight took progress so its disingenuous to ignore that it’s has been the status quo (conservative) position in the 100 plus year political system that basically ignored and actively worked against marginalized groups. He’s painting conservatism as some baseline for all things accepted when in fact it’s literally the opposite if you have any semblance of history. Change is inevitable and it’s conservatism that attempts to stop it or in many instances tries to regress it.
That's what I was thinking. His descriptions of "liberal" and "conservative" seem very watered down. I grew up in a white middle class home in Canada just like him, and I'm extremely grateful and believe I have an awesome life. But like you said, I know that's not the case for everyone, and I believe in government-funded programs to help individuals who aren't as lucky as I am. I also thought what he was saying about authority was *heavily* biased. I've never seen a correlation between respect for authority in general and political alignment. I wonder if he thinks this because Harper was PM for a long time when he would have been developing most of his ideas, so "respecting" Harper's authority would have been a lot more common among the conservatives, i.e. his own party.

I think it's very easy to trick oneself into thinking that one's own beliefs and actions are purely rational, while believing that those of others are irrational.
That's why I can appreciate JJ's videos despite probably disagreeing with him on many things. He gets that his opinions (and everyone's opinions) is also shaped by their socio-economical background, life experiences and personality.
I was very much left wing when I was younger, and moved to a more right-leaning position, but very differently to the odd rebellious 'conservatives' you described. In my head, young me was very disappointed that I wasn't popular and wealthy and all that jazz, but blamed society for what I now know were my own failings. That came with a strong personality shift that happened as I aged. I realised as I got older that I was the person causing my problems and the only person who could solve them (still haven't finished and never will finish solving them). I think that may be a shift in perspective that former left-wing rightists that you see online haven't gone through, which is why they blame all society's ills on other people rather than extolling the virtues of individual agency.

Which brings up an interesting point. If conservative is simply a term for either not wanting change or wanting change to be done more gradually, you could call the center right/left the conservative right/left. Different ideas of where things should go, but both sharing the belief that society is pretty good as is, and that rapid change will wreck society more than it fixes it.

@Electro_blob You're making an error in equating those two. In the US it is generally illegal to discriminate against someone based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc. making up the category of "protected class". The exact wording varies at both the state and federal level, and we have a similar set of laws in Canada. Therefore you do not have the right to refuse service and thus discriminate against someone based on their race (a black customer as a protected class). In the case of right-wing speech, ideology/affiliation is generally not a protected class under what I mentioned above (except for in DC I believe), so there wouldn't be protection under the law for an individual if a private entity chooses not to do business with them because of their ideological affiliation. Private corporations should be allowed to freely choose who to and not to do business with outside of protected classes. The key distinction here comes from choice - being in a protected class is mostly considered to be an immutable fact of life, although there are disagreements at different jurisdictional levels on what are protected classes like I mentioned above with DC and ideological affiliation.

The most annoying issue that I have is, being a minority, most people around me expect me to be 'liberal' and have certain social values which I totally disagree. Each time I have to explain that I believe in conservative values and my opinions are different. I hate being categorized socially and forced to believe in something that I don't.
I can really relate to this, but in the opposite way. I am very religious and I am a leftist liberal. People expect me to be conservative. When I don't hold the views that they expect from me, they can be quite abusive. Even people from my own congregation have been very rude towards me about it.
Hello JJ. I have been watching your channel for quite a long time now. I have had a large interest in your take on Canadian and American Politics, even though I am not in anyway considered a conservative. I truly love learning so many new things from your channel every week.
I value individual liberty and equality over practically all else; however, I have never lost sight on how grateful I am for the sacrifices those before me had to make so I may have the many opportunities available to me now. Technically, I am a little bit more left-leaning, but I tend to be as I absolutely neutral as possible. I prefer stepping back and finding well informed solutions to complex problems over the nuance bickering and hee-hawing of the current political climate.
I would attest my politics to my personality and social life. My family has never been stable or had much money, but we always have had a high value on work and education. My living through the plight of socioeconomic inequality has led me to be more liberal, but my value of education and hard work has led me to be objective in looking for real solutions to the tough questions.

I believe the sudden rise of conservatism is for the most part reactionary! The reason I say this is because the left had these groups under there umbrella such as Black Lives Matter, modern third wave feminist movement, and the LGBTQ+ these groups were getting more and more outspoken about white people and right wingers and this created a culture war of sorts and anybody who wasn't really sure about there political ideology just suddenly became conservative because they saw conservatives as there allies and had a common enemy. Those are my thoughts anyway!
@@dylanwilliams4459 A bit of a generalization, for example, I'm against a lot of left leaning groups, yet I also support a lot of left leaning positions (enviornmentalism, veganism, social safety nets, centralized public services ((like free health care and education)), social and gender equality for women AND men). The problem is that a lot of radical feminists and race activists/supremacists come from a philosophy I fundamentally disagree with, which usually veers way past liberalism and head first into Marxist socialism and communism. These philosophies inevitably create oppressive societies. These are not people you can trust with power because they don't act on principle, which is often why they are called hypocrites and contradictory. Their ideas sound good on paper but never hold up under scrutiny.
There isn't much I want to conserve, I just don't want these people in power.

Conservatism (like any political ideology) is good, but problems arise when people start using it as an identity, when people start seeing it as some sort of sports team that they need to root for, when people become more focused on their ideology winning than actually discussing the merits of one's position. Not everyone is 100% conservative, not everyone is 100% liberal, and not everyone is 100% centrist.

This is very true and what I believe modern democracy (at least in countries like Canada and the US) has fallen into. The right and left are more concerned with battling each other and identity politics rather than serving the country.

I'll second that. Very fair assessment, JJ. I find that conservatives are pretty much what you said, and also a bit territorial, generally speaking. In the here and now, wrt these new rebellious conservatives, technology shifts have created the type of knee jerk fear of the future that led unemployed blue collar workers in the rust belt to vote for 45 out of desperation for smthg new. I grew up near Windsor, so I saw some of the despair firsthand. Including one 50 smthg year old homeless man who was laid off just a few years before he was due to retire from his comfy job in auto manufacturing. I heard stories like this every few days for several years (2008 through about 2014, and longer on the other side of the border. Hell, they're still suffering in MI.)
I'll add that youtube culture and Gamergate, which overlapped with the views of the 4 horsemen of new atheism or w/e they call themselves led to a good deal of this reactionary alt right nonsense. I can understand why, at times. I've been on the receiving end of some of that airy fairy leftish preaching about rape victims, animal rights and evil capitalists. GAH. Those Trigglypuff feminists get under my skin, too. And *I am* an oldschool feminist. I stand by the Trudeau Liberals, even tho I don't agree with everything they've done. I thoroughly disagree with a couple of their decisions, tbh. Like Omar Khadr. They should have let the Americans hang that traitor like the Kamloops Kid. There are vets rotting in homeless shelters so whacked out on their PTSD symptoms that they can't even find a hospital, and that scum gets $10.5 million. That has to be one of the worst injustices I've seen in Canada in years. The pipeline deal is a bit yucky, but forgivable in light of the fact that there was a nasty mess to clean up with that, and no easy solutions. Same with the Bombardier bailout. Corporate welfare... blah. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes it makes things worse. I guess we have to wait and see. I'm a bit disappointed with the rebranded NAFTA deal. Trudeau should have stuck to his guns with that Tommy Lee Jones wannabe and told the Americans where they could put their stupid Factory Farmed milk. And I'll figure out how to grow my own frikkin cauliflower before I pay $7 a head for it :P We have everything we need to be self sufficient, without American interference. We need to back away from the Americans, especially now that they have an unstable nutjob for a president. Other than that, Trudeau's Liberals have done ok. They're the lesser of the evils, imo.

Agreed, Ideally i would love liberalism/socialism on the left to be the driver of change while the conservative party is the bastions of cutting the fat; working out efficiency issues, balancing the budget and whatnot. But the tribalism is so bad they can never even agree to work on something together. Compound that with conservatism being so fundamentally against the governement having any part in solutions (just let the free market do it!) its impossible now to have these kinds of colaberations.

From what I understand, communist nostalgia stems from the communal aspect of the ideology, since few people living under communist dictators had any way to realize the bigger picture. Most of these people, if asked, will freely admit that communism is terrible for developing a society, and will recognize the atrocities that they now know all about, but it wasn't nearly as clear to them while under those dictators. Instead, they remember living in a very tightly knit community where material wealth (and especially money) wasn't nearly as important, which is all a very attractive way of living for some people. Additionally, those who grew up in this sort of society will especially be subject to the radical changes that have occurred in their lifetimes, not being as used to materialism, the emphasis on money, and capitalism in general. A great deal of people miss being part of a tightly knit community where globalism and capitalism and materialism wasn't a big deal, and they can not be faulted for that.

JJ literally represents a minority of conservatives, like myself, which I can’t ever find more of. I’m a conservative with what I consider to be a very “liberal” personality so I often get so turned off by many people on my side. I get to the same conclusion as them but for very different reasons.

I think there is for certain climate change no doubt. It’s not all that bad in Canada but it’s only getting worse worldwide. Especially because of the emissions coming from places like China, Iran and Russia and to a degree the United States are super high compared to Europe and Canada.
So it exists and it’s not bad right now, but it’s only getting worse due to China, Russia, Iran and the USA.
As a socialist, I found this to be a very well informed and unbiased. It provided a very unique perspective to a very polarised topic.
@Smash Effectx I won't speak for him, but most people classifying themselves as a socialist consider necessities like healthcare, education, etc to be better managed by the government where profit isn't an incentive; believing that it's harder for the free market to act properly on things that you have to buy which are limited in competition or where it's easier for a monopoly to grow (generally speaking)
aka health care is essentially a tax that must be payed, so you might as well have the government run it so prices aren't artificially hiked, there isn't a middle man, and peoples health/emergencies are the incentive and priority. At least that is the theory
@Smash Effectx In a working market quality tends to go up while prices naturally go down because otherwise products would lose their demand especially when there are competing products that don't or aren't incentivized to work together.
However when you have no choice but to buy a product (aka demand is always there) often competition ends up limited and priorities become faulty (for example people with money often are prioritized over people needing treatment immediately)

When I was younger I considered myself a moderate. I have conservative values in the way of being grateful of who I am, what I am, and where I am, and thinking that those things are not inherently bad. But I also recognize that certain aspects of American reality do not live up to the American ideal. So politically I am considered a liberal simply because I want a country who proclaims justice for all to - well, provide justice for all.
I sometimes wonder if in other countries I’d be considered a conservative.

I'm not conservative but I love hearing JJ's perspective and attitude. If more people on BOTH sides of the political spectrum could be as level headed and open minded as JJ, the world would be a lot better place. Watching his videos has certainly made me a much more open minded person when it comes to handling people I disagree with politically.

I'm not a conservative and identify as a socially progressive leftist. I like your take on conservatism and the ability to differentiate between personality leanings and intellectual leanings in politics. My mantra has been the same that we should work towards a society that thinks for itself and not go into a cult of personality. We should try to understand the bias on both sides and listen and empathize with people who engage in a non-toxic respectful way.

There are a lot of extremist conservative ideas that I just hate, especially the portion of them that hate on black people or the LGBTQ+ community. And it gets even worse with religion. I'm atheist, but I do think that historically religion is a very big and important part of human culture that should be preserved, and I really do think that there are many good morals and values that can be taught by religion. I just hate it when people go full cultist mode and start praying to a divine figure and building altars for them, or when they use a book that's thousands of years old to prove their points or even excuse their horrendous acts. As I said, I'm okay with religion, I do think that it's important for history and culture. But please, don't be an extremist about it, in fact, just don't be an extremist about anything in general. As someone whose part of the LGBTQ+ community, there are A LOT of extremely toxic and downright crazy people here. There are teenagers here who believe that religion should be eradicated or that throw massive temper tantrums just because someone didn't ask them for their pronouns( on that note, I don't mean to sound offensive towards anyone who puts great value on their pronouns. Just understand that not everyone is educated about these topics, and that's mainly fault of the educational system, not them. The most that the average person knows about are gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Some people don't even know about trans genders and trans sexuals, and let's not even begin to talk about the massive amounts of other minorities like non-binaries, asexuals, pansexuals, etc. So if someone uses your wrong pronouns, please just ask them nicely to use the ones you're comfortable with, please don't throw temper tantrums over it)
I'm left-leaning, and I enjoyed this video. I am kind of rebellious, but I do believe in respect for (proper) authority. I also believe you have the freedom to disrespect authority, but I believe this should only be the case when you have legitimate grievances, precluded also with an authority figure who is unwilling to listen to criticism. Everything's a conversation, nothing should be off-limits, and nothing should be taken for given without proof. I will always seek to be respectful to people in person, even those I disagree with, but I will not hesitate to call people out when they profess views that I find to be harmful to people.
The interesting thing about that is that you could have started the sentence prefacing that you are right leaning and it still would make perfect sense, points at least nominally to some more universal values that, most people, tend to share perhaps

@flmvdvsrg The whole American political system is shifted to the right considerably, and the mainstream Democratic Party is centrist by the rest of the world's standards. As such, you'll find that conservatives in other countries tend to be far less radical, the center to be far more populated, and the left to be much more in line with a Bernie Sanders mentality than, for example, a Barack Obama-like one.

Lord Farquaad the Democratic Party is all but extreme. They’re literal centrist. The only extremist in America are the conservatives when compared to the rest of the world. In the rest of the world, conservatives would be more like democrats here. This isn’t even my opinion. It’s just a literal fact just like earth being round. I will say though, the Democratic Party is very corrupt, but so are the republicans so it doesn’t really mean anything. Both parties are terrible, corrupt, and pretty much the same, but one is in the center and the other is extremely to the right. You’re just choosing which leg you’d rather get kicked by. Anyways, the point is that conservatives in America are objectively extremists while the democrats are centrist. That doesn’t mean I like either though.

I agree I think the biggest problem is this insane sense of pessimism in modern American conservatism. I personally know of people who have completely conservative stances, yet wouldn’t call themselves conservatives because of all the bitterness and exclusion within the current movement. Conservatism should be based around the fact that we have it good and should appreciate all the work it took to get us as far as we are. For people who aren’t pessimistic nihilists it should be a no brainer to be conservative. And yet now in America, both the liberals and conservatives are totally plagued with pessimism and anti Americanism. People who just enjoy life and the country feel like they’re politically homeless.

I'm the same! I tend to be quite left leaning and agree have positive views on stuff like socialism and refugees, but I really think the Kavanaugh situation was handled horribly.
I was raised in an Italian-Peruvian family and living in both countries (childhood and early adolescence in Italy, adolescence in Perú) gave me different views about politics (economical and social). At 14 I got attracted to communism because of the rebel nature and because some guys were promoting events outside the high school. Then, when I read about red terrorism in Italy (70s) and Perú (80s-90s) I turned very anti communist. Only at 18 I started developing a more critical thinking about political views and nowadays I consider myself a conservative with some left wing views (more on certain social politics). I could say a liberal, in a very European way. The problem nowadays is that, with the modern edgy and toxic path many "conservatives" have taken, rational things such as anti-racism, anti-sexism and basic respect for the different are seen as "left wing". Basic respect, for me, is a matter of education and empathy, not political leaning. I'm very disgusted by how modern political debate turned so extremist, polarized and sometimes superficial.

I am a very freedom-oriented and rebellious person, so I tend to hold positions such as support for freedom of expression and freedom-respecting software. I don't really have a strong position outside of that, except for a vague notion that capitalism - at least in its current form - is not perfect because of its poor treatment of workers and the tendency of corporations to monopolize (and violate the aforementioned freedoms).
Everyone needs to read Pat Buchanan's book The Death of the West to know what real conservatism is. I recorded an audiobook version of it, available on my channel. The term conservatism is often misused these days.

I'm a Social Democrat, but I really appreciate your videos. I grew up in a similar situation. I was relatively well off in a middle class family and I was always taught to be grateful. For a while, I was even a conservative. Although, my change in political philosophy happened slowly over time as my opinions on hot button issues changed.
I think the terms “moderate” and “radical” have supplanted the meanings that “liberal” and “conservative” used to have.

I grew up around racist people who engaged in the behavior where they would denounce anything that didn't apply to them. They would be disgusted by anything empowering towards minorities, gays, women, other religions etc. I broke out of the conditioning years ago and I have lost most of those people as friends (best thing ever). It started out with me simply asking questions on why they thought the way they did... But by the 2020 election my once best friend said fuck it and told me I need to get over things like racism. "Just dont let it bother you, just ignore it". Btw I'm biracial, he is white. I was telling him how someone at my job who was trying to be funny called me a slur, the coworker then played victim when I told him I didnt like it and it was disrespectful. This was the 2nd instance with the same guy, but my friend took his side and said I was being a snowflake, while he was going off about how racism only exists for white people now because slavery already ended and now blacks and gays are in more movies and are trying to replace white people. Sure, I know not all conservatives think this way, but I've met way too many of them who think like this. Everytime I meet another one I feel like I go a smidge more to the left. Right wingers now assume I'm an anti cop, anti white flag burner just because I'm left wing now, snowflakes on both sides. Politics is an ugly game. Telling a POC to get over racism wont get you invited to the next barbecue. I enjoy my chill conservative friends who can actually hold a friendly conversation instead of spewing toxic ignorance.

I'm a Liberal (I prefer the term Progressive but that's not important), I've been told that I'm easy going and somewhat quiet in person (though I've gone on a few rants while on UA-cam). Sometimes I do have the urge to go and express my belief on something, but I'd rather do it in a civil conversation than a yelling match. To me, the true ideals of a liberal is to support the equality of all people under the law and society regardless of ethnic background, religious background, cultural background, etc. I believe there does need to be changes in law and social norms, but I also believe there are many things that should stay the same. I don't support the loud and arrogant who go screaming at people to think one way and one way only (this is true for both Liberals and Conservative). Most importantly, and this is something that I would believe regardless of the political spectrum, people should be aloud to think for themselves and follow their ideals as long as they do not hurt or put down others. We shouldn't insult or blame each other we should act calmly and kindly to one another. J.J. you're a really cool guy and you should be allowed to be a Conservative regardless of what other think.

Yeah, but the olds are a much bigger group. But they're also, in some ways, less visible, because the mass media tends to be more interested in young people. So a lot of people these days think the young conservative rabble-rousers are like, the leading energy in the movement (which my video kind of suggested, in fact) when really, it's mostly a lot of Fox News-watching grandpas.
I think that is a big divide, which I’m sure even us young conservatives can see personally simply by a conversation with an older conservative family member. While we hold similar bases, you probably still find yourself disagreeing with many of their beliefs and points. It’s an interesting split, and I’m eager to see what it’ll result in
Dylan Iaquinta one thing I’ve noticed is that as you get older, your standards just sort of decline and you become so fixed in your beliefs you don’t really care much about arguments anymore. So Trump’s popularity with the GOP base has never really surprised me all that much. I don’t think a lot of older conservatives are all that interested in whether he represents a “break with Reaganite orthodoxy” or whatever. He ran against Hillary Clinton, who is like, the ultimate ancient enemy of aging conservative voters, as determined by a logic they settled on a quarter-century ago. The more I think about, she really was the worst possible candidate they could have picked.
I’ve grown up conservative by my family. During my early 20s, however, around the time 2016 came in, of course I’ve delved into the left-leaning social media posts without having much knowledge on the consequences of such liberal ideologies/labels. Around 2020, naturally, I started discovering right-leaning or libertarian accounts on social media. I deleted social media due to the censorship of a lot of information during that time. During those times, I’ve been researching information instead to form my own perspective on things. I now primarily looked at UA-cam as my sort of social media. All in all, you could see that my political viewpoints stem depending on where I look at on social media which made some influence based on my personality. Currently, I’ve been looking into Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, and now you, for example as my source of “guide” into looking at information from a new light. I’m almost 26, still conservative, but I try to be more cautious and knowledgable about politics nowadays and not to be entirely influenced by everything.
As a liberal, I will say that I very much enjoyed watching this video, and look forward to the next time you upload.

I grew up to be very independent and so conservatives appeal to me because they seem to be more encouraging in that you can do it :). I see liberals tend to victimize people and it really brings people down and doesn't motivate them to grow because they think the system is aganced them. Also a huge one for me is conservatives support self defence and as a victim of child abuse that one really speeks to me on a deep level giving the individual control " lacked control when kid" so independence and control means a lot to me
You can say all those things are true even if you swap the words liberal and conservative. When it comes to people who are not in a place in their lives that they can, for various reasons, be independent it doesn't mean they don't want to. Also many social programs that are usually unwanted by conservatives are actually helping the people who don't have to use them because what is good for the peace in your community whether it is local, national, or world is good for all. When society rots around you, you're effected. When society thrives around you, you are affected. When people around you are happy and healthy the world you live in is better than one that isn't. Its amazing how far the world changed in the last hundred years because of social program and more access to and better healthcare. I know many people who wouldn't be alive today and that makes it all worth it to me. I am very greatful and I can't wait to see how much better things can be when we lift each other up because that's how we all got to where we are. Independent or not the society has only come so far because of how we came together and cooperated. Just think about how a grocery store works with many to make things so convenient. If you had no store to put together everything in on place. It's less waste of resources like time and money. That's what society is about in a nutshell.

I was abused as a child, from the age of nine to twelve. In my conservative country people tell you to suck it up. Because fighting back it’s a “disobedience to authority” (usually people in authority to you do such things).
You seem to contradict yourself. A person should not be a victim, should move on and grow up. Why then don’t you forget about being abused in the first place? Or we indeed *have to* punish people for their wrongdoings to then move on? Make up your mind.
When conservatives say suck it up and move on it’s about you shutting the fuck up and forgetting everything without attacking whomever is responsible for that. In their opinion for marginalized groups being strong is just being tolerant to what they let other people do to them, steal, rape, murder, etc. Basically “keep being a victim”. So the question is, do you want to keep being one or you want to stop putting up with that? Because people mention what happened to them not to whine but to make it clear they won’t let it happen again, to make it known they are aware that what has happened is illegal.
If a system doesn’t let a person grow, a person breaks it and creates a new system. Simple as that.
And yes, sitting on your ass all day and whining won’t change anything. Victims do exist because abusers do exist. The only question when are those people be brave enough to start fighting back. As one writer said “you shouldn’t be quiet of what it going on or they’ll kill you and tell everyone you enjoyed it”.

I remember reading about former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, a republican, and how he always said that he was "conservative with money but liberal with people," which I have always found to be a good form of conservative politics. These days it seems like you can't be a progressive or a liberal without supporting socialism and communism and you can't support capitalism or be economically conservative without being a hateful bigot.
I like Eisenhower alot, but tbh do kind of disagree. I personally would like to have more social programs like a healthcare system, which does involve increasing taxation. Though I do respect the opinion of not doing that.
I would say that the phenomenon of people with rebellious personalities becoming more conservative also has something to do with a shift in what is seen as “mainstream culture” in the past 30 years (at least in America). For most of the 20th century, I would say that most media “personalities” that were considered mainstream (writers, movie stars, talk show hosts, etc.) were fairly conservative, at least on the basis of supporting traditional cultural values and opposing left-wing economic policies that were associated with communism. This would lead to the rebellious-type people being drawn to left-wing ideologies, the extremes of these being socialism, communism, or anarchism. However, starting in the 1990s but especially from the 2000s onward, this began to shift and mainstream cultural figures have begun to support more left-wing cultural and economic positions (of course less extreme versions, but socialism became more acceptable than it once was). As a result, the position one would take to rebel against the system is now more likely to manifest itself in right wing ideas, like classical liberalism, conservatism, or at the most extreme forms of fascism or the alt-right.

I don't know what I'd call myself. I support social programs like free education and healthcare but i also prefer limited taxation and not too much welfare to prevent people becoming needy. I prefer to call myself a liberal conservative. I support a mix of liberal and conservative values. I am for affordable healthcare, but I am against high taxes. I am also a big supporter of the oil industry (even its expansion) as I believe it would give jobs and taxes.

I am a liberal but I used to identify as conservative. I used to be Mormon but I began doubting the religion when it conflicted with my sexuality. I looked into the history and left. Mormon's ideas are mostly conservative so it was an extension of my religion. Now that that wasn't relevant anymore and I was effectively rebelling I slowly adopted more liberal ideas over the next year.
I’d just like to say as someone leaning on the left, I grew up similar to you and I’m extremely grateful for everything I have, but i believe not only that we can get better but we should get better and while not all of the liberal policies are for that generally they do make the country a more balanced stable place where we can grow our economy without worrying about a war or smth. Basically I’m grateful but I’m always looking for how we (and also the world but for the sake of this video I’m focusing on Canada) can get better and I believe that if we keep our values we will eventually fall behind in terms of democracy happiness and wealth. Declan Newton-Maharaj Here’s an example. “Democracy” as we understand it, has changed a lot over the centuries. Women and people of color, for instance, can now vote. I would say that a reform of this sort has helped preserve and strengthen democracy. We have conserved and strengthened the validity of our democratic system of government by making it more inclusive.

I have been recommended his videos quite frequently, as someone who sorta leans conservative but I don't really identify myself as such. I find that he does hold conservative values, but also is willing to sacrifice these values for social cohesion. That's fine if it is what you believe, but I think he will soon find that his whole world view has been burnt to ashes around him.

I think a good, super simplified breakdown of American conservatism vs. liberalism is their thoughts on the individual and community. Conservatives think what is good for the good is good for the gander, hence the focus on less taxes, less regulation, and individual freedom. Liberals, on the other hand, believe lifting up the community lifts up the individual z hence the focus on social services, high taxes on business and the wealthy, and collective freedom.

When there is no gov interference. The market prices and salary are regulated by supply and demand. The competition between companies is what drive the prices down and bring development by forcing then to research new technologies that make the product cheaper.
The more you have of an product compared to who need it, the lower it's value.
The more apples in a Market compared to the desire to buy apples, the lower the value of apples.
The same work for jobs, the more people can do a job, the lower it's value. The easier it is to replace a worker, the lower someone is willing to pay for said work. What drive salaries up the most is when one company compete with another company to hire the workers. Things like immigration and reproduction increase the number of workers.
With universal basic income in place, companies will have to compete with said money. They will of course offer more money to the worker to create the desire for him to work. However to compensate their increased expenses, they will increase the price of the goods. Trying to pass the extra expenses to the consumer.
If all companies do this, the value of the money will decrease. Inflation will turn the value of the basic income down. With time the universal basic income will became worthless.
So let's say that someone to prevent this put price control with the universal basic income to prevent companies from increasing their prices. This will, of course, create both a scarcity and a black market. People will either stop producing or sell by a way higher price in secret. If you fully crack down the black market. Then nobody will want to start a business. No business and no industry means no jobs. If nobody produce anything it means that there will be no products like food.
People will either do not open a new business, replace their workers with robots, or will move their business overseas. Here is some examples:
1) Venezuela started to crackdown and nationalize business, this resulted in the owners trying to sell their business in fear of losing everything, nobody opening new business, investors not wanting to invest in the country. This helped weakens Venezuelan economy, resulting in the oil industry becoming the only thing keeping the country up.
2) When a governor forced Mac Donalds to increase the salary of burger flippers in the South, Mac Donalds replied by firing then all and replacing then with machines.
3) The reason that Hollywood is where it is today is because it was cheaper to make a industry there, they where running away from Thomas Edison's patents and there where no such things like unions. Basically they went there because the government was pro-business. It's the same reason that companies move to China today, because it's cheaper and the people there has less rights. Now that Californians have the second biggest minimum wage and unions, the situation of the working class improved. However, this is resulting in the Movie Corporations fleeing the state, going to less cost states. With even movies being set in California not being filmed in California. Of course, if you try to fix the situation with taxes over the Movie corporations, which will be used to help the poor, you will end with then going to another country.
Of course, other countries offering products that are cheaper than national products will result in forcing national companies to drop their prices or have reduced sales. (Most consumers always buy the cheaper item). Eventually, these National companies will also move overseas or close depending of how much money they are doing. Remember the same way that the majority of consumers will buy the cheaper, the majority of companies will produce where is cheaper. If a company offer too low money, the worker will refuse to work if he has better opportunities. If the profit margin is too little nobody will want to start a business.
Of course, the worst situation that can happen to a market is a monopoly(According to Adam Smith, father of capitalism). Which is achieved when just one company stands, and nobody want or can create companies. The single company will be able to ask as many money as it want or offer products of as low quality as it want. And people will have no choice other than to buy it. Competition between companies is what drive the product quality up.
The supply and demand works for everything, even money, the more the govern print money, the lower the value of the money became.
You should also have in consideration that the value of the coin is important for international trade, countries where the money has less value will sell to countries where the money has more value. To understand the real value of the money, you must understand that the numbers in the money are meaningless abstractions. The real value of money(As defined by Adam Smith) is time. How much time you have to work to buy how much stuff. When new skills and technologies are developed due to competition, it will produce a resources that take less effort to produce, being cheaper. Yes, what I am saying is that capitalism is what caused the industrial revolution. As the salary of people became higher, the business owners started to replace then with machines.
Then we have the private business vs government owned business, if the private business is not a monopoly, if there is competition, the private business will ALWAYS be better and of more quality than the government business. Why? Because if they are lower, they will eventually break. Meanwhile, the gov business is not competing with the other business because their payment will come no matter what. They have no interest to make a product of quality, because their revue come from taxes. This result in low effort and politicization of the business. For example, in Australia 60% of people use private health care despite the existence of a government health care, and the same repeat in every country with every company(Except Monopolies, Monopolies are as bad as the government, if not worst).
Many people jump to socialism as the ultimate system, without taking any of those things in consideration and end up crushing their own economies. Every problem is way more difficult to solve than they look and there is no perfect solution. The best that we can do is balance socialism and capitalism, trying to grant good salaries to workers but not to scare the business owners away. To tell the truth, most people have just superficial knowledge, and do not stop to think about what the long term effects of their ideas will became.
I'm a conservative. I was raised in a religious household, that had a "meh stance on politics" I found my political ideology after going through a entirely socialist phase (NDP, Bernie Sanders, etc.) Came back after seeing what happened to Canada with Trudeau, and the recent tax hikes in BC with the NDP in power. I also looked into conservatism more and more, and with the help of your videos I have found my ground.

I liked the idea you mentioned about gratitude and how that goes hand-in-hand with a desire to help people who haven’t had the opportunities you’ve had be able to have those opportunities. Most traditions became that way because they work, including the tradition of forming a stable, supportive family. When that doesn’t work out for people, it causes a lot of heartbreak, and it’s an eternal effort both to help people see the value in those foundations and for us all to learn how to establish those in our own lives based on our own personalities, abilities and interests.
I've always had a very conservative personality, even when I was a leftist economically. I've always been very family oriented and was raised in a Christian household so I guess that's got something to do with it.

I wouldn't self-identify as a conservative, but I certainly wouldn't call myself left-wing either. I was born into a happy, stable, left-wing family and I held my family's political views until I was about 16 (which was about 3 years ago) when I realised I'd never decided what I believe for myself. I decided that, at heart, I'm really somewhat socially right-wing (if not fiscally) but I don't really want to go all the way. I think my views are entirely down to my personality and the way I was raised, but ultimately I think everyone's are. No one's politics are really objective, they're just reflections of who we are.
I used to be a "socialist Democrat" but in 2015, I just started realizing I was lying to myself about a lot I believed. Like economical things I actually knew nothing about but would bloviate to people and parrot talking points. I started reading philosophy and learning about America's enlightenment and I don't know that I'm a conservative especially, but I do get called right wing (among other things) a lot for understanding where a lot of people are coming from. It's possible to be empathetic as well as disagree. The older I get, the more conservative I feel, but it doesn't align well wuth ben Shapiro, though he does make me laugh sometimes. I sometimes say I'm libertarian, but that's silly too. I am a political hobo I spose.
What's really interesting is that libertarianism was originally a left wing ideology, that was admittedly stolen by the right wing. Murray Rothbard, a prominent economist from the Austrian school, admitted this in the mid 1970s around the time the modern right wing Libertarian Party was founded, though his book wasn't published until 2007. But the first use of the word "libertarian" as a personal political identifier was by Joseph Déjacque, a french socialist anarchist, in 1847. Basically the original left wing libertarians, in an extremely simple sense to put it, believe that personal liberty and voluntary association cannot be maximized without removing the tyranny of private enterprise as well as state tyranny, and to this effect, that we should engage in practices like workplace democratization. Labor unions are actually kind of the first step on this path, as they embody the most successful form thus far of trying to equalize or make more equitable the standing of the laborer in relation to the executive/corporatist.
I consider myself in the middle (I agree with some conservative ideas like pro-police and authority, but disagree with others like climate change), and I agree with this video 100%. I do think some modern conservatives are just trying to be rebels and are tired of being told what to think by things like modern media.

I'm a believer in Climate Change, but believe that there still so much we don't know about rather the Earth is warming or cooling. I read a article a while ago that claim that the ocean was cooling and the Arctic see a drop in temperature. Also couple months ago another article reveals that scientists find a error in measuring the change of the ocean temperature over the years (which I don't know how you can get that wrong, unless it including temperature that wasn't recorded pre-modern age, which in itself should be taken with a grain of salt). Also the amount of people that smerk at others for ridiculous claims (oh it snowing outside, that mean climate change is a myth) but then will do the same something when a heat wave or a hurricane hit a coast (this place never been warm before, that mean climate change is real).
I'm a conservative because I am distrustful of authority and the police. Being from a religious minority in a left wing state we saw a lot of suspicion and policing overreach in our lives simply because we homeschooled (not trusting public education), and we dressed differently and held more traditionalist views.
My mother is from an Amerindian family that had been destroyed by welfare, her siblings never got jobs and lived a life a criminality because welfare enabled them to do so.
And so, even though my family was poor, she rejected all government handouts and to this day, though I did not grow up with the best food, or clothes, or housing, I believe lacking that and knowing all that we had was earned, built character in myself. Within one generation, my mother brought herself from generations of poverty and drunkeness to having all her children be gainfully employed and... well not wealthy we are all upper lower class or lower middle class, but we have earned everything we have. Looking at our cousins who got the "better childhood" through welfare, they are prostitutes, drug dealers, and can't hold down a job.
I want that kind of freedom for everyone who is able-bodied, to know that they earned their living, and not rely on the government. That is why I am conservative, because my mother's conservative values brought my family out of squalor.

Genuine question, I am a trans person. How am I supposed to understand or sympathize with conservatives when they have repeatedly striped me of basic human rights and continually fight accepting or acknowledging me?
Disclaimer, I am not a conservative, and I dont think you should be trying that hard to sympathies with people who treat you like that. But, understanding people is always worthwhile if only to properly talk to them to change their minds.
It is important to understand that conservatives have lots of ideas about a lot of things. We (me, you and many others) can confidently say that their position on trans people is wrong, but that doesn't mean all of their ideas are wrong. Sometimes preserving the status quo is good, when things are going well for everyone. Its just that is rarely the case.
Very few people fit any ideology perfectly, and you will find many conservatives who do not hold the "conservative" view on trans people, and those are the one you can and should try to understand/sympathize with. Realistically, everyone has some conservative views, and some liberal views, and some views from all over the political spectrum, and it often boils down to what ones you rank as the most important to you.
Basically, its the idea that while we cant agree on all things, we can agree on some things. But just because we can find common ground does not make the fight for basic human rights any less pressing and immediate; so, such things often become the sticking point where you cant move on to finding the placed you agree on, until that disagreement is worked out.
What are these basic rights you speak of?
Most conservatives nowadays(specially young ones) don't really care about what you do with your own life, they just want their freedom, basic individual rights and way of life respected. And also which rights have been taken from you?

So, in terms of rights, my biggest fear is that, as a gay American, the new makeup of the supreme court will take back my right to marry.

I think that the word should be more open minded, but modern liberal parties, at least in the US and Canada, accidentally push this notion backwards when they make policy decisions (not only economic ones but especially economic ones) that come off as anti-freedom and don’t address the issues at hand. E.g. implementing rent-control but not zoning reform (Toronto, California), supporting increasing school funding but not property tax and zoning reform (looking at you Chicago), funding homeless shelters but not auditing for corruption (WA, NY). A large portion of people do support or at least don’t oppose a more open minded position on the expansion of rights, but of that portion, many of those vote with their wallets.

I think the core of conservatism, at least in the US, is the strong emphasis on limited government and personal responsibility. Conservatives are less likely to believe in welfare, but more in family, community, and for some, religion. Very objective video though! Glad I found you.

Listen to Larry Elder, Candace Owens, or even Barack Obama (A Father's Day presentation at a church when he was still a Senator, IIRC), where they all spoke of the high correlation between father absenteeism (incentivized by welfare) leading to be impoverished, drop out of high school, and end up in prison.

We simply believe that any progress should be natural, organic, and evolve from the positive values and aspects of out society. Conserving those positives is where we got our name. This aligns perfectly with evolution.

I was conservative who flipped after seeing the rise of corporatism in the US. I like capitalism but it needs modifications to ensure its survival going forward or I fear you’ll see it collapse or become a failed corporate state in the future. I found that if people aren’t being exploited it’s very easy to vote conservative if you have something to protect but if you have nothing to lose it’s very easy to go the other way in millennials have massive debt and poor prospects couples with rising costs without adjustments to wages. I just don’t see that being good for capitalism going forward left untreated in the United States but boomers don’t seem to care because they will be dead before sh- hits the fan. My personality I’m a Virgo so I appreciate order structure and I do not like chaos. I was in the military which I excelled in because of the order structure attention to detail and the rules which plays into my political beliefs but only when I Have faith in the people I’m listening to and I have to have respect for them which is something that the military does well not so much on the civilian side of things I’ve noticed since transitioning out.
Voters need to see past themselves and their own *perceived* interests. At least care about their own grandchildren's lives, if not the nation as a whole.
@@piecekeeper5317 - I agree. We need to think about the kind of society we're leaving for the next generation, and doing so can lead to some VERY different viewpoints on political matters. Instead it seems like even thinking two or three years ahead is too much to ask for.
You used the word Corporatism in the wrong way
Its simply one of those "only if it happens to me" type of situations. Not to knock on conservatives so much but, this tends to be what happens when they benefit from the status quo. They'd be the same people centuries ago who thought this was the best of all possible worlds. They dont think in paradigms, or possible alternatives.

I really enjoyed this video! The ugly side of modern conservatism in today's political discourse. People who are aligning with conservative parties are saying vile things and insulting people all over the interwebs just for the sake of it. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should!
Ya but the problem is the second you try and take that ability for them to be a dick away you become worse in my eyes.
There's a good software metaphor that you can see with apps on your phone. Problems are fixed, improvements are made, and then they get downloaded to your phone.
You don't want to NEVER get updates, because then you miss out on the new features, and things that are broken don't get fixed. But, you also don't want to get new updates every day, that'd take away too much from the time you want to spend actually using your phone.
So you need to have BOTH viewpoints and to ask BOTH sets of questions, "What is going well that we want to keep going well?" and "What isn't going well that we want to improve?". And in our political system (in the US at least), the conservatives tend to be more interested in "What is going well that we want to keep going well?" and the liberals tend to be more interested in "What isn't going well that we want to improve?"
And here's the rub: YOU NEED BOTH! What is SUPPOSED to happen is that conservatives and liberals sit down and talk respectfully like adults and work together to figure out what is "the right amount of updates", and which things are "the most important to update". The sad thing is that seems to be getting less and less the reality, which is unfortunate.

Sounds like my situation. I love the slow incremental reform, straight arrow morals kind of conservatism, but most self-described conservatives don't agree.

I'm a person on the right, but I prefer to be called liberal. My politics are aligned with the Old Right (Howard Buffet, Zora Neale Hurston, and Robert Taft). Ron Paul is a hero of mine.

Hearing you generally define a liberal made me think about how differently I think about the left wing than what you said. I am pretty similar to conservatives because I think at the moment I have it pretty good and I obviously don't want that to change, but I'm still a liberal because I recognize that not everyone has a similar situation to mine and we should help them and their place in society.
His definition of a liberal isn’t correct though and his definition of a conservative is a half truth. Being a liberal or progressive doesn’t mean your opposed to all things currently in place it means ensuring that the current system in place recognizes that all social classes, ethnicities, religions and sex/gender get the same rights as those who’ve always had them. It’s like gay people always existed but it’s only with progress the system now recognizes them (in terms of rights afforded to others). That didn’t happen because people at large somehow developed a conscious, it took activism over decades fighting for basic rights against “conservatism”. Governments for decades didn’t recognize certain civil rights for homosexuals, ethnic minorities and so on and that fight took progress so its disingenuous to ignore that it’s has been the status quo (conservative) position in the 100 plus year political system that basically ignored and actively worked against marginalized groups.
He’s painting conservatism as some baseline for all things accepted when in fact it’s literally the opposite if you have any semblance of history. Change is inevitable and it’s conservatism that attempts to stop it or in many instances tries to regress it.
That's what I was thinking. His descriptions of "liberal" and "conservative" seem very watered down. I grew up in a white middle class home in Canada just like him, and I'm extremely grateful and believe I have an awesome life. But like you said, I know that's not the case for everyone, and I believe in government-funded programs to help individuals who aren't as lucky as I am. I also thought what he was saying about authority was *heavily* biased. I've never seen a correlation between respect for authority in general and political alignment. I wonder if he thinks this because Harper was PM for a long time when he would have been developing most of his ideas, so "respecting" Harper's authority would have been a lot more common among the conservatives, i.e. his own party.

I think it's very easy to trick oneself into thinking that one's own beliefs and actions are purely rational, while believing that those of others are irrational.
That's why I can appreciate JJ's videos despite probably disagreeing with him on many things. He gets that his opinions (and everyone's opinions) is also shaped by their socio-economical background, life experiences and personality.
I was very much left wing when I was younger, and moved to a more right-leaning position, but very differently to the odd rebellious 'conservatives' you described. In my head, young me was very disappointed that I wasn't popular and wealthy and all that jazz, but blamed society for what I now know were my own failings. That came with a strong personality shift that happened as I aged. I realised as I got older that I was the person causing my problems and the only person who could solve them (still haven't finished and never will finish solving them). I think that may be a shift in perspective that former left-wing rightists that you see online haven't gone through, which is why they blame all society's ills on other people rather than extolling the virtues of individual agency.

@@Edmonton-of2ec yeah there's definitely some truth to that, although I would add that young far left, at least here in the UK (I assume it's similar in other Western countries), is hardly compassionate. There's always been a lot of apologists for barbaric dictators and anti-semites. It definitely came to a head recently with Jeremy Corbyn's Labour, where bullying and racism was very much ingrained in that culture.

Canada’s conservative is America’s center-left. I’m leftist and agree with him on pretty much everything.
I think JJ is an American center-left. There are still many radicals in Canada.
Which brings up an interesting point. If conservative is simply a term for either not wanting change or wanting change to be done more gradually, you could call the center right/left the conservative right/left. Different ideas of where things should go, but both sharing the belief that society is pretty good as is, and that rapid change will wreck society more than it fixes it.

nope. the so called center in the us is actually far right. people don't lean that way or another, in reality the so called radical left wing politician Bernard Sanders stands for policies that vast majorities of americans agree with and have agreed with for decades (universal healthcare, free education, higher taxes on the rich) look at polls of these issues.

As an American, I became a liberal in the realization that many of the people in my family and around me in school, which are majority conservative in the state of Montana, felt like closeted racists. I hold some conservative values for sure. But when it comes to human and social issues, liberal all the way.

I don't think I've ever heard "The right to discriminate", it actually kind of clears up, how some people who supposedly defend individual freedom might justify blatantly racist or bigoted attitudes. Not sure I'm better off knowing this, but hey, you live you learn
@Electro_blob You're making an error in equating those two. In the US it is generally illegal to discriminate against someone based on race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, etc. making up the category of "protected class". The exact wording varies at both the state and federal level, and we have a similar set of laws in Canada. Therefore you do not have the right to refuse service and thus discriminate against someone based on their race (a black customer as a protected class).
In the case of right-wing speech, ideology/affiliation is generally not a protected class under what I mentioned above (except for in DC I believe), so there wouldn't be protection under the law for an individual if a private entity chooses not to do business with them because of their ideological affiliation. Private corporations should be allowed to freely choose who to and not to do business with outside of protected classes.
The key distinction here comes from choice - being in a protected class is mostly considered to be an immutable fact of life, although there are disagreements at different jurisdictional levels on what are protected classes like I mentioned above with DC and ideological affiliation.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. I'm a conservative myself living in Canada, not a White Christian but share the comfort of the status quo. When I've been bundled up with some of the other people who seem to be on the edge or the fringe, I have always felt wierd..
The most annoying issue that I have is, being a minority, most people around me expect me to be 'liberal' and have certain social values which I totally disagree. Each time I have to explain that I believe in conservative values and my opinions are different. I hate being categorized socially and forced to believe in something that I don't.

I can really relate to this, but in the opposite way. I am very religious and I am a leftist liberal. People expect me to be conservative. When I don't hold the views that they expect from me, they can be quite abusive. Even people from my own congregation have been very rude towards me about it.
