The PC party was pretty much dead by the time Kim Campbell took over. It had brought in a REALLY unpopular sales tax and botched two constitutional amendments, creating hard feelings across Canada and causing two breakaway parties to form. Plus there was a terrible recession from 1991-1993. The PCs were at about 15% support when she took over. She had no time to give it any new direction because the maximum term between elections (5 years back then) had almost expired. Yes, her campaign was mediocre but really the PCs did no worse than where they were headed anyway if Mulroney had stayed as leader. And the next two PC leaders led the party to 20 seats and 12 seats, which kind of points to the fact not so much that Kim Campbell was a terrible leader but that, after Mulroney, the PCs were a spent force.

Re watching this video after the fall of Liz Truss as British Prime Minister after 45 days in office. Her short tenure, characteristics and relationship with the Conservative Party immediately made me think of Campbell.
To pass the blame on to Kim Campbell seems highly misguided. Brian Mulroney was easily the worst PM in Canadian history, and almost single handedly destroyed the national PC party. If you wanted to argue that Kim Campbell was irrelevant, might be a stronger position.
Excellent video. I attended a lecture given by Kim Campbell about a year ago in Toronto. She is a highly intelligent woman. I think that we would certainly have been no worse off if she had continued in office beyond 1993 as opposed to the Chretien Liberals. The Liberal governments' policies ended up not being radically different from those proposed by the P.C's in the campaign of 93 in any case. Mr. McCullough, I would not be opposed to a whole series on the Prime Minister's of Canada in a similar style to this video.
So, if I get your point correctly, Campbell is canadian history's worst prime because she's been thrown in an unwinnable election and then lost so badly that it destroyed her party, which was already going to lose. What's bad for a political party isn't necessarily what's bad for a country, and I would rather judge a prime minister on the policies he\she takes rather than his\her ability to get elected or his\her failure to be the smooth-talking-Jesus-figure of an already dying party. Kim Campbell may have been the worst politician to get the top job, be she can't be Canada's worst ever prime minister: she's not much more than a pesky footnote!
Throwing a party leader under the bus by electing them/forcing them into it. By such logic Alec Douglas-Home would be the worst PM in British History during to his year-ish long which is complete rubbish given the existence of John Major or Gordon Brown (the latter perhaps may be another example, but his Premiership was more than a year). She does seem the Canadian equivilent to Theresa May, in which she took over a liberal conservative before showing the Party to be a liberal and nebulous mess at the election she contested. The only thing keeping May in power that couldn't help Campbell was two-fold: state of the main opposition (In Britain's case being a committed socialist) and Party loyalties running strong (but still failing to guarantee her that 'assured landslide').
@@exie4678 Alec Douglas-home would be considered quite a good Conservative leader, this is because he was able to rise up in the polls, Labour was expected to win that election by a landslide but they barely won a majority. In French the premier of quebec is prime minister because they dont really have a word for premier Premier and Prime Minister mean the same thing (premier meaning the premier minister of government) and technically its not incorrect to call a premier the prime minister of their province its just weve taken to calling them premier in english to have a clear verbal distinction between provincial leaders and the federal one.

great job jj you actually totally described it- very impressive for someone who never lived in that era or was just a little kid One thing about that era...when campbell as pm called an election the expectation was that she will return with huge majority the media was decribing it as "campbellmania" and it was though unstopable because she was regarded as possessing a genuine charisma and political skill That is why other conservatives, PCs back then, did not challenge her for the leadership and the Liberals were actually quite wary of getting into a campaign with her Seriously it was like that back then Campbell, herself, was so delusional about this that , at one point, while campaigning she said "lets not call it campbellmania lets just call it campbellinfatuation" or something like that but as the campaign wore on into its halftime, it was becoming clear that campbell was obviously out of her league and had little if any skills Campbellmania evaporated literally overnight and the campaign still had some time to go it was bizarre thing to witness At that time i was a student at the u of sask, our history prof was late, she showed up 10 minutes later and said " im sorry im late but i had to relax for a while because i just attended a campaign stop with kim campbell, she is probably the most stupidest person the planet" for me that was the empress has no clothes point-i woke in the morning with the headlines blarring about campbellmania, when my class ended at around three, the only though i had in my brain about campbell was the description above The rest of Canada followed me soon after

Your videos are fascinating. You would make a brilliant history / politics teacher 🇨🇦🇬🇧
Re watching this video after the fall of Liz Truss as British Prime Minister after 45 days in office. Her short tenure, characteristics and relationship with the Conservative Party immediately made me think of Campbell.
Kim Campbell probably lasted longer than Truss though 😂
@@juanchoresultay2704 well 4 months consists of more than 45 days
Mr. McCullough, I would not be opposed to a whole series on the Prime Minister's of Canada in a similar style to this video.
actually she isnt quite intelligent-she is very stupid
She didn't shatter the glass ceiling they threw her off a glass cliff
Yes, Brian Mulroney had a lot to do with her loss.
In fact, if 900 more people in 18 constituencies voted conservative, Home would've won with a workable minority.
By the way, I agree with everything you have said

I’ve always been curious about her after almost running into her at the Vancouver Indycar race. I was an official, pushing my way through the crowd and saw open space around a blonde haired woman, so I went for it. A hand grabbed my arm and a sunglass wearing, radio toting guy in a suit pointed at her and said “the Prime Minister “. I was surprised at getting so close, 3ft, to the head of large country.
I’m American and typically ignorant about Canadian politics. I had to ask about to find out who I had almost run into.
Thanks for the video. I always look forward to your vidoes and I've been reading your cartoons and articles for close to ten years. Please keep making more videos!

Great content as usual. You should do a video about Bonar Law, the only Canadian-born British Prime Minister, and the only PM to be born outside the British Isles.
Considerate and insightful, as always, good job!
15:51 This reminds me a bit of William Henry Harrison. Although he died one month into his presidency, he's still respected as a president (at least here in Ohio) for being essentially the founding father of the midwest, and I think people often see his earlier achievements as justifying him as a president, even if he hardly was one.
Being British this is giving Liz truss vibes but even Liz truss lasted less longer in office than Kim cambell
She remind me our first woman president here im Brazil, not only for the appearance but also by the incompetence.

I feel like Liz Truss is well on her way to becoming the British Kim Campbell (albeit with a longer political carreer preceding her premiership)
I still have a tshirt from her party election campaign. She threw a legitimately fun shindig I attended as the friend of youth delegates. All the boys were really cute and nice. That's all I remember, the cute boys lol Good times :)

Another excellent and informative video. Thanks. When I watched yours on Laurier, I was yet to become a Canadian Citizen. Happy to report I am watching this one already as a Citizen. By the way that could be an interesting topic for a video - many curiosities and there were a few quirks in my Oath ceremony too. Happy to send some information your way if you are interested.
This is such a good explanation of who Kim Campbell was, and how the old Progressive Conservative Party collapsed, that many people will find it through search-engines and will watch it, when they are looking for information on this aspect of recent history. Also, JJ explains in Part 4 the way in which Prime Ministers of Canada are regarded and given historic status, perhaps more than in any other major democratic country. See this part at 14:15 to 16:35 . Well worth watching again.
Liz truss sees the four months of prime ministership of Kim Campbell and laughs
I had turned 18 just in time to vote for Kim Campbell ironically.
It was pretty historic.

12:05 “Prime Minister of Quebec” - do you mean Premier of Quebec?
Separatism didn’t quite win out :)
it's prime minister in Quebec
Anglophones say Premier but here in Quebec we do say Prime Minister.
In French the premier of quebec is prime minister because they dont really have a word for premier
Premier and Prime Minister mean the same thing (premier meaning the premier minister of government) and technically its not incorrect to call a premier the prime minister of their province its just weve taken to calling them premier in english to have a clear verbal distinction between provincial leaders and the federal one.

I actually never thought there could be a country in which the worst leader would be the least relevant. Generally the worst leaders are among those who matter the most.
ok on that Womens magazine with Kim on the cover I read "And Justice For All" and thought it was about the Metallica album, given that this was the late 80s.
great job jj you actually totally described it- very impressive for someone who never lived in that era or was just a little kid
One thing about that era...when campbell as pm called an election the expectation was that she will return with huge majority the media was decribing it as "campbellmania" and it was though unstopable because she was regarded as possessing a genuine charisma and political skill That is why other conservatives, PCs back then, did not challenge her for the leadership and the Liberals were actually quite wary of getting into a campaign with her Seriously it was like that back then
Campbell, herself, was so delusional about this that , at one point, while campaigning she said "lets not call it campbellmania lets just call it campbellinfatuation" or something like that
but as the campaign wore on into its halftime, it was becoming clear that campbell was obviously out of her league and had little if any skills
Campbellmania evaporated literally overnight and the campaign still had some time to go it was bizarre thing to witness
At that time i was a student at the u of sask, our history prof was late, she showed up 10 minutes later and said " im sorry im late but i had to relax for a while because i just attended a campaign stop with kim campbell, she is probably the most stupidest person the planet" for me that was the empress has no clothes point-i woke in the morning with the headlines blarring about campbellmania, when my class ended at around three, the only though i had in my brain about campbell was the description above The rest of Canada followed me soon after
