You have Art Garfunkel of Simon & Garfunkel, and George Harrison of the Beatles huddling together at the beginning. This was Carly's breakout hit, the first of many. Her father was the 'Simon' part of Simon & Schuster book publishing, one of the biggest in the world at the time. What makes this performance impressive to me is that Carly was known for having horrible stage fright. She sure pulled it together for this one.
Watch how she doesn’t get close to the microphone. She loved to sing and had the confidence in her vocal power to carry so strong. Stage fright or not, she braved through that to show what she had. The brilliance of her song writing is clear to see.
Thanks, Maddy! This is a striking and haunting song.. my very favorite by Carly.. she is so beautiful and such a gorgeous voice, song-writer, and pianist (that's Art Garfunkel & George Harrison).. look forward to more of your reactions... !!!
Carly wrote many beautiful songs. She was special. James Taylor, Carole King, and Carly all broke into the biz at the same time, and they inspired and collaborated with each other a lot. . Their friendship was special, and the three of them added a lot of Magic to the 70's. SO many great songs, Maddy, for you to explore when you are ready. 🙂 Check out Carly's "You're So Vain"...
Carly is a great songwriter (who plays guitar and piano); she has a good catalog of hits from the early 70s to the late 80s including the theme ("Let the River Run") to the movie "Working Girl" (1988?), as well as singing the award-nominated theme to the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me" from 1977. Two of her biggest hits were "You're So Vain" and "Anticipation".
Great song and performance! Can’t go wrong with Carly. Carol King is another one you should check out. Her “Will you still love me tomorrow” always hits my soul, great song
Back in ancient times, when I was growing up, young people were pressured into conforming to societal standards. "Ladies, you'd better get married and have children when you have the chance or you'll end up a lonely and childless old maid. Do you want that to happen to you?" It was about this time that people, especially ladies with women's liberation, were beginning to challenge those notions. This song captures that awakening. Carly wrote the music for this song. Her frequent collaborator, Jacob Brackman, wrote the lyrics.
Boy do i wish i would have listened and took heed to these lyrics when i was a young man. I never get tired of this performance. She's a beauty in so many ways.
"Their children hate them for the things they're not; They hate themselves for what they are- And yet they drink, they laugh, Close the wound, hide the scar." From the perspective of a child or a parent, those lines really hit hard and make you think.
@@yellowdayz1800 I don't think it's about abuse. I think it's about how life beats you up over the years, and you just learn to hide it and act like you're happy when you're not.
Thank you for reacting to my all time fave singer songwriters, Ms. Carly Simon. "That's The Way" was her first single off her debut self titled solo album. Oddly enough Carly did not write the lyrics. As she's stated regarding her songwriting process "if I get the melody for a song first, I can't write the lyrics." Carly enlisted the help of her lifelong friend and collaborator, Jacob Brackman to write the words. Knowing Carly and her life, Brackman developed a convincing storyline which Carly embraced. Carly debuted her second album, "Anticipation" only 8 months after the release of her first album and both records were competing against each other on the record charts. For this small feat, Carly was nominated and won the 1971 Grammy for Best New Artist. Like he contemporaries Carole King, and Joni Mitchell, Carly writes from that deep personal space we can all relate too. Excellent reaction❤
Carly is a song writer and abvious singer who was inducted into the music hall of fame She was huge in the 70s. There are a few songs that you would deeply appreciate. You need to react to "Anticipation" and You're so vain which was her biggest hit. I love everything about Carly Simon and I enjoy your reactions.
I have always thought that this song is about courage. The courage to start a journey with someone you love, and who loves you, in spite of all the failures you have seen in others. You are correct to advise "choose the right person" definitely. But even when you find each other, and choose each other, marriage is not for the faint of heart or the non-courageous. It is a battle you must fight together, a struggle you must both take on together, knowing the rewards of that struggle can be immeasurable. My father cautioned me when I was 17, "True love isn't just staring google-eyed at each other, it is looking out together, in the same direction."
You can't imagine how lucky I feel that as a preteen in the 70s that my parents were Carly Simon Carol King and Karen Carpenter fans....the songs are forever in my head😊
My favorite song by her. The lyrics paint such a vivid image of dissatisfaction that creeps into a marriage and settles on the children. I once went with a girl in High School just because she looked like Carly Simon.
Carly Simon was a great songwriter. I think she wrote songs that reflected her own life maybe more than any other songwriter I've ever heard. You can follow the trajectory of her life by listening to her songs over time. From falling in love to falling out of love, to deal with cheating and hurt. She is also a great performer.
She had a stammer/stutter as a child but that did not affect her when she sang. So, her mother encouraged her to sing what she wanted to say. Eventually the stammer/stutter went away as a result. She is/was a brilliant singer songwriter.
Yes. This is why you will see her included in a list of singers and songwriters. She also plays the piano. This is the ultimate musician…write, play, sing. Love Carly Simon.
Looks like a friend of hers wrote the lyrics to this song, Jacob Brackman. They wrote a few songs together. Carly has so many hits and I remember having a big crush on her back in the day.
Nice job with this one, Maddy. Carly Simon’s songs (songwriting) and performances are emotive. Something that will become familiar to you as you get to know more artists of the late 60s and early 70s is that innovation and collaboration between artists were remarkable. Also unfailingly memorable. Thank you for the many thoughtful contributions you make via your channel.
Carly , has one of the most beautiful, iconic James Bond Themes titled " Nobody Does it Better" from the Bond film " The Spy who Loved Me'...the studio version is her, and the London Philharmonic. Please react to her more!
No autotune is so absolutely right. It destroys the humanity, soul, and creativity of the performer, reducing them to robotic impersonal proto-AI singing that takes mo chances and delivered nothing of lasting value. Carly gets it and nails it!
I like this performance. This was the first Carly Simon song that hit home with me. I was in Jr. High at the time going through a rough spot in our family, Mom and Dad were at odds with one another, and her Lyrics on this song, really hit home with me, and her vocal performance left me wondering, is this the way it should be ?
Carly Simon is a freaking virtuoso--nobody does it better (for those who know). I was about 8 years old when this came out and I had no idea about the underlying message. I just knew that when she sang "you want marry me"...well, it made me want to marry her. I guess I'm the eternal optimist.
This song came on for the first time as I was flying to New England/ Maine to be exact to get married, how ironic, if I would have listened to the lyrics back then, maybe I would have had a change of heart. but instead I just listened to the music. not heating the warning, and sadly, 12 years later, my ex-wife and I divorced for much of what Carly says in her song, we had three kids, and sadly now almost 50 years later. none of them are in my life, actually two of them had passed, and I have never met most of my adult grandkids. so if possible if you're entertaining doing the same thing because you think that's the way it's supposed to be or the way it should be, how about taking a moment unlike what I didn't do and listen to the words. there's much wisdom in what Carly wrote and sung about.
