@@speedwagon5951 Ah, apologies. I think it's very unlikely that the Dell Optiplex 790 will be able to boot from the PCIe adaptor holding an NVMe. Looks like the unit was designed in 2011, which is well before NVMe storage became available.... so it wasn't factored into the BIOS... meaning you can't select it as a boot drive. It will work as a secondary drive though, but probably at limited speed if the PC only have PCI 2.0 slots.

You raise a good point. Unfortunately not all old motherboards are going to allow you to assign the PCI/NVMe as your boot disk. I had a similar experience with an Asrock motherboard. While I was able to install the drive after updating BIOS, I was unable to make it the primary boot disk.
The only absolute solution in this case is to replace your motherboard. Alternatively, you can strike a compromise by installing the programs that you need to perform fastest on the NVMe, including games, video editing software and the like. You should also use the NVMe as your scratch disk for any applications that require the temporary writing/reading of significant volumes of data. In my case, I settled for using a regular SATA SSD as the boot disk, and the NVMe as a secondary drive for games and multimedia production.
Taking a longer view, it seems that the next upgrade for both of us is likely to be a new motherboard.

Yes David, you'll be fine with that configuration. Windows 10 natively supports the NVMe in PCI x16 slot adaptor. The only unknown is whether you'll be able to assign it as your bott drive. You'll need to consult your motherboard manual for that information, and possibly update (flash) your firmware. If your motherboard is a 2014 model or later, it probably supports booting from NVMe.

First, find and download your system/motherboard's manuals and do a quick search for "NVMe"... it is possible that your motherboard or that particular HP system doesn't support NVMe SSDs.
It's also possible that updating your BIOS will solve the problem entirely. This is quite likely the problem for motherboards made in the early-to-mid 2010s.
That said, I have one of these working in a PC from 2010, so I'd remain optimistic. Good luck, and let me know how you go.

Hi Kunalsingh. I've looked up your motherboard and can say that yes, the NVMe drive will be compatible, provided that you are running Windows 7 or later (NVMe SSDs are natively supported from Windows 8 onwards).
It's unclear is whether or not you would be able to use an nVMe SSD as your primary boot disc, that is, running your operating system from it. I suspect not, as the BIOS updates don't list that as a feature. But you won't know until you try, unfortunately! I would recommend installing the latest BIOS update for your motherboard beforehand: www.asus.com/us/supportonly/Z87-PRO(V%20EDITION)/HelpDesk_BIOS/
There are many m.2 NVMe SSDs available... choosing the right one for you will depend on your priority: speed or budget. Good luck, and please let me know if you decide to install one and what results. Links for buying the adaptor and an SSD are in this video description.

Your best option is to check out what BIOS updates are available for your motherboard and any updates to the manual/documentation for it. Search for "NVMe" within that documentation and see what comes up. Good luck, and please let me know how you go.

I know it is slower, but can a regular m.2 non nvme ssd be used without the driver issue? (I guess if it can be done it would end up sata speed, so the only advantage would be packaging.)

@Nescrun No, I can’t get the bios to recognize the plié card at all. Tried several different setting.
