So I’ve been watching a lot of videos on this matte box VND and I think I’m going to opt out of the VND for the reasons you discussed. That color shift is bad and the cross polarization is not good too. I completely understand the engineering restrictions and why I’m going to get the drop in IRND filters. I currently own a 1-5 stop VND from Neewer and I’m actually very impressed with it but I’m sick of screw in filters. They are so slow during a fast paced day. What day isn’t fast paced? Lol
I have PolarPro Basecamp VND kit with 2-5 + 6-9 stops variations. The circular polarizer showed bubbles within 2-3 months of purchase (gladly, not seen with the aperture range I work with). Also the copper color started to fade out within 2 months! Other than that the image quality out of the VND and the CP is pretty pristine if you can avoid the blue shift on both extremes. Despite being 2-5 stops and 6-9 stops (never used the later but got it for free when bought it from PolarPro directly vs Amazon/BH) the colors seem to be consistent. I've seen other reviews of the Tilta Mirage VND and seemed to be consistent as well, so not sure if they did change anything or camera sensor's hot mirror react differently from one company to another (seen mostly Sony reviews). I think I might end up adding Tilta Mirage to my arsenal for their special effects filters that are rotatable as well and for the motorized VND.
the breakthrough X4 ND could be the solution. I also ordered mine. It's compatible with the canon drop in adapter. A cheaper option would be the meike adapter
You are the first review I have seen that has said that there is a major colour shift with the mirage. Every other one has said that it is a warm or green shift but is consistent though the range. I was wondering if you put a different filter on the lens or behind it?
Would a free well vnd work with the tilta? I heard good things about the freewells.
How do you change the vnd filters with the motor with vaxis filters? Thanks
Man I actually purchased the 3 stage polar pro mattebox system. And yes it did look great, but man the polarizer was really stiff so I ended up turning the whole mattebox when I rotated it, and there’s really no way to tell when you’ve gone too far unless you notice the horrible color shift. Which when you’re outside you might not notice. I dunno I wasn’t really impressed with it.
