    I've been on groups recently where many folks have been posting shots using Black Pro-Mist filters. I wondered if I might missing out on something, but after seeing the comparisons on this video I'm totally content to continuing shooting without one as I preferred the clear examples every single time. Thanks Ray!

This gives me the opportunity to teach the principles and the 'Why' first. Then I always try to throw in a Head-to-Head comparisons towards the end of every video, as well as things that Need Improvement (straight criticism). I appreciate your constructive criticism too. I have a Sony a7iii I just bought a few months back, I am in love with it! I got myself the Sony 24mm f2.8g lens for videos when I bought it. I more recently picked up a Sigma 85mm f1.4 as well and it takes stunningly sharp photos. I switched from a Nikon d3200, it has a real dirty lens. Honest to god, I think its because of that it takes some really interesting stylistic photos. ;) it also has lots of sentimental value to me as the first camera I bought with my own money from my first job back in the day.

    I still lean towards using the Dehancer Pro plugin for subtle blooming. For a strong effect you would need those filters as the artificial solution is only good for low to mid effect imho. But keeping the main video intact is good to extract clear stills if needed. Great review, mate.

    Great review! I realised that K&F Concept has multiple Pro Mist filters such as Nano-K, Nano-X Series etc. They say that K series for beginners and X series for professionals, I really don't know what that means and whats the difference. Do you have any isssues with sharpness in longer focal lenghts such as 200mm with the Nano-K series? Asking because I have some other brands pretty cheap CPL filter that has a lot of sharpness issues above 85mm.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  11 місяців тому +2

      Thanks! YES, you are right. There are different grades to their filters. The point in this video was for beginning filmmakers to not stress about getting expensive filters (like my $330 Schneider Hollywood Black Magics or $100 Tiffens) because you can still get great results with cheap filters. But yes, the longer the lens, the more exaggerated the filtration, for most types of filters.

    • @RayValencia

      Yes, no issues with those 2 filters. Always put your Effects Filters on First (Mist), then screw your Polarizer on top of that filter.
      You only get major issues when you stack ND and Polarizers , because Variable ND are essentially 2 rotating Polarizers. Mist has no affect on Polarization. I have 2 other videos about 2 in 1 VND + Polarizers though... I'll look them up and link them here for you.

    Is there’s a point buying VND+Black Mist filter(2in1) or it’s just the same as if I stacked vnd and black mist filter myself? I thought about reflections in between the filters because in 2in1 filter the distance between the glasses is slightly shorter. Can it be crucial?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  4 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely worth it to get a combo set. I don't personally have a 2 in 1, but I always keep a Black Mist on underneath my VND and it doesn't bother me. The shorter distance of a 2 in 1 would help with possible vignetting on wider focal lengths. Depends on the lens and the VND. Never had any issues with reflections in between, though!
      I honestly use the Freewell mattebox a lot, on top of the Mist, when I'm shooting so I can avoid the whole vignetting thing too. And that is even more space between the filters and no issues.

      I am looking for this answer myself but no luck. Knowing how marketing and price discrimination works, I reckon there is little to no practical difference. • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  9 днів тому

      that washed out mist is part of “the look” from mist filters. It looks nice when you let sunlight leak through a crack, or between leaves, etc but if you point it straight at the sun/bright source the effect may get too strong. Lights can be in the shot, but not aiming straight into the lens. That will make any lens flare, but the mist will intensify it. Hope this helps! 🤓

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  11 місяців тому +3

      Great question. The desharpen method works great when you can specify which area, like in Photoshop. But in video, Desharpen would soften everything...the eyes, the focus. The Black Mist filters only soften the highlights or bright areas. And keep dark areas, like eyes, and eyelashes, lips, etc....dark and sharper.

    • @jn-xw3cq

      Or you could by a filter that takes down sharpness without blooming. Tiffen makes a wide range of texture modifying filters of which their black pro mist is just one. They have a satin filter that doesn’t bloom the highlights.

    I have mists filter and now i dont use it because it just ruins the image and yes i can replicate it on post. For me dont waste your money on mist.

    Interesting, but every single filter can be recreated in editing. Not sure why you’d want to start with a degraded image rather than a perfect image that you can then experiment with

      There’s a subtle difference I think when something is baked in to the image, rather than laid over the top afterwards.

      Pretty sure a polarizing filter is impossible to reproduce in post
