- Do you have trouble mixing vibrant yellows in your watercolor paintings? Do shadows painted on yellow always look green? Why do your yellows look so muddy, and how can you avoid this?
In this full length watercolor lesson, I'm going to share what I've learned about using yellow in watercolor painting. Color theory is a complicated topic, but the good news is that you can learn by doing. There is no substitution for just spending time getting to know a color by painting with it and mixing it with other hues. Have fun exploring color varieties and mix up a rainbow of possibilities!

Remember that yellow is a light value color, but that doesn't mean you use it full strength all the time. The lightest value is still the white of your paper.
Yellow and violet create beautiful neutrals. Experiment with warm and cool shades of violet to create different neutrals, and vary the proportions to see even more variations.
Yellow is commonly considered a warm color, and it will always appear warm beside a cooler hue (like blue, green or violet...really anything with blue in it!) Beside warmer hues (like red or orange), yellow might look cool. Color temperature is relative, so even minor changes in the colors you are using alongside yellow can make a big difference.

TY for this.. my favs r nickel azo yellow for its bursts, and the original quin gold. Some days I spend hours on just mixing colors..some look bad, and some I love.. but I find just messing around by mixing on paper is a true joy to watch, and sometimes ends up as the start of a painting for me.
Thank you for all you give! Such positive energy and joy!
This did should be on every painters must watch list....will go o mine till memorized....job well done..tthank you.
I just love when you show how to wok with specific colors, it’s so very helpful. Thanks so much for the educational information.
Thanks for sharing all your love for watercolor with us. Great job Angela. Keep on exploring!
I LOVE the painting that is under the group of yellows that you are fond of!!!
that's the brown I was looking for recently and could not mix it! now I know the colors to use! thanks!
This was such a great, helpful video. I really learn a lot from these videos. Thanks so much for sharing.
What a great lesson. I love your color mixing lessons. You are a great teacher.
I love your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and gift with us!
You’re making me miss Quinacridone Gold very much with this video! So many yellows in one pigment. Apart from that, this was a great video for making you think about the page, and what your artistic intent is, rather than concentrating on the rainbow of palette colours like its a pick’n’mix of sweets! Thankyou.
Very informative and interesting information. Thank you!
Information from all your creativity is so valuable and appreciated. Angela the ways you broke down this lesson was so effortless to learn and understand, your a great instructor. Thank you very much! I would love to see a comparison lesson with each primary color. I cannot believe how much this has made a difference in how I've looked at yellows I've been using. Awsome direction to experiment with them. Would love to see how you look at blue and red.
thank you for this!!! super love this video! Yellow is one of the hardest color to work with 💖💖🌼🌼🌼 and I appreciate this video so much :-)
THANK YOU, ANGELA...ALWAYS LOVE YOUR COLOR STUDIES...LIKE YOU, AM SMITTEN WITH AUSSIE RED GOLD...I THINK I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT IT BECAUSE OF YOUR RECOMMENDATION QUITE SOME TIME AGO...AND NOW THAT SENNELIER BRIGHT YELLOW GREEN MIGHT BE CALLING ME...!
Thank you very much. I find your videos so helpful :).
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Thanks Angela, quite informative. It's going to save me time figuring out how to get the best color I need.
Very helpful information, Angela! I watched the bonus video also - love the colors! I also want to say that I am learning many awesome techniques through #sketchbookrevival . I love every minute of this learning experience! All the artists are great and so kind, taking the time to explain things so thoroughly. Now, I can draw and paint an awesome face with a water soluble charcoal, add paper scraps and watercolor. I can also draw a cute "dancing dog," a bird or focus on the details of a small object! I can also create fantasy animals from cracks in the sidewalk or fill a page with whimsical houses, and more! It's all so inspiring and fun, from my face to my thumb! By the way, I enjoyed your video, as well!
I love quin gold with phlalogreen and a touch of azo yellow. It's DS SAP green and the base for the hookers green. I love the amazonite green!!! Oh my and it mixes clean! And my new non flat black that I love is the tourmaline genuine. I love it more than ANY ivory or neutral for that non flat jet black. Wow! I even mixed a rose ultramarine to it lightly MG. My fav yellows- nickel azo, azo, yellow ochre DS, raw sienna, medium cad, new gamboge, quin gold and naples. Wow 8. Thanks Angela nice tutorial!
Thanks Angela. I especially liked your recommendation about not going crazy with the yellows in the lightest areas. I've heard the phrase "Let the paper breathe." Thanks also for the brown mixing demonstration, might even try it for flesh tones which shouldn't be granulating. Yellow is a tough color, thanks for all the advice.
Thank you Angela. Using yellow is difficult for me.
I can’t see the extra lessons? Great video, I especially liked the combos with Diox.
Excellent to the point explanation & demonstration, hard to see true color on screen so nice to have your verbal assessment which from your point of view "live" may seem redundant to verbalizing it. Excellent. I have one question regarding doing black & white to determine value. I don't have a printer or any photo editing tools other than my ipad camera, would you know if I edit my photo turn to black & white will it give same kind of results that you demonstrated in this video & your red video?
Nice video, it would be nice to see you mix your pigments.
What was the name of the blue you used to mix with the nickel ago gold to get the right green for you? And what brand watercolor is it? Thank you! Very informative video!!
Angela thank you for showering how to mix color.where do you get that pallet
I have been playing alot with color mixing as an exercise but I dont think I can remember which combinations looked great. Do you suggest writing it down like in a log when you mix colors that you like so that you can learn and remember?
I read somewhere that Aureolin was not lightfast? Will it fade or discolor over time?
It's funny you chose this topic to upload today. Tomorrow's prompt for #aprildailyart on Instagram is YELLOW :)

I've been searching and can't seem to find my perfect and favorite yellow. I want a creamy buttery soft yellow. No matter how much I water it down I have not been able to achieve that effect. It always takes on a different tone.
Try a Naples Yellow Light. :)
@@StorytellingHeadshots thank you. I love Naples yellow it's my favorite.. but it seems to ochre look a bit as I layer it if that's the right term? It's not transparent but maybe a light one will work better!
But the cinereous blue has white in it

This really helps because I just could not visualize a ‘cool’ yellow.
I hope you are not using the real Aureolin, PY40. Aureolin, (cobalt yellow) PY40, is not lightfast. It fades to a dirty greyed brown after only a couple months of light exposure.
