  • Let's de"mist"ify watercolor! In this free watercolor lesson I will show you how to paint fog or mist without using masking fluid or white gouache. You can create beautiful soft effects with a little bit of planning and a light touch. You don't even need a pencil sketch to start!
If you've been using masking fluid to save the white of the paper, you already know that masking fluid can be difficult to work with. It creates a hard edge that doesn't give the soft, diffused look we need for painting fog. Adding white paint or gouache is equally problematic, as painting white over watercolor gives a chalky look, and rarely matches the white of the paper, so it doesn't really feel transparent and light.
By working wet-on-dry, you can block in the major elements of the painting, leaving the light areas light, and using water to soften edges for a wet in wet look that maintains some control.
I'm using a fairly narrow range of colors, two or three blues (choose a warm blue like ultramarine and a cooler blue like cinereous blue), a couple of violets (you can mix your own but I like wisteria, cobalt violet deep and carbazole violet from Daniel Smith), and for warmth, a splash of Mars Yellow (substitute raw sienna) and Hematite Burnt Scarlet (substitute burnt umber).
You also don't need a perfect reference photo. By using a reference photo as my jumping off point, I was able to improvise and edit the scene to create a more pleasing composition. Using my knowledge from scenes I have painted in the past, I was able to add mountains emerging from the clouds to make my painting more interesting.

Oh I just love your misty technique. By not using my masking fluid or white, if it produces even something a little like yours, it will be an improvement in my attempts at misty seascapes and landscapes . Thank you so much.

Angela, this is wonderful! I love the softness of it. I've not painted in trying to capture fog since I took the Atmospherics Landscape course with Birgit O'Connor. She also helped us create a vast amount of fog with one swipe between the water and land. Powerful and gorgeous! Thanks for a great lesson!

How fortuitious! My work in process is my first attempt at painting fog. I put some pearlescent stuff over the paper white area in an effort to create sparkle in fog over water.
Angela, I would dearly love to see you paint a dark fog bank.

your such a good teacher. I was looking for other paintings teaching this but they are either so simple or so complex that I lose interest or it doesn't apply to my situation. This gives me the exact technique I need. Although I have to paint cactus in front of my mist and mountains and I think I will have to mask the main clump of them

This is very beautiful. It is gentle and soft. Thank you for sharing. One of my issues is overworking pieces of a painting. This happens when I am not pleased with the result in a particular area. I guess it is a practice issue. Thank you again for sharing your work. It does take a lot of planning.

Oh, wonderful! I have tried so hard to do fog. I will keep using this technique and will improve I am sure. Right now I am also trying to do animals, especially the big cats. Talk about difficult to get the colors right! I really need more practice in mixing colors. TFS

I'm going to try to paint this as you paint it, except I think I'm not going to put the yellowish at the bottom. If I do I'm going to lighten it up a lot more so it's not so dominant in the picture. I think the way you do the mist or cloud's is a brilliant way of doing this! You make it look so easy. Thank you so much for sharing 😊! Happy painting!😎.

Beautiful. I love the result - a foggy mountain mist. I can understand including misty foggy mountains because they're interesting but is painting a scene during a rainstorm complicated?

Angela, What a beautiful painting. I love this effect. The paper looks so smooth as if it is hot press, but I don't think I've ever heard you say you use it. I have some hot press that I bought by accident; I tried to use it but my watercolors didn't move. Is there any way to use it successfully or should I give it away to a pen and ink artist?

Great video! I have a question.... you united the paint with the blues , but when you added the yellow land/weeds that color doesn’t appear anywhere else. Is the painting still “harmonious “?
    Thanks....

Angela..thank you for a lovely tutorial...it was really nice...must say though, that I am not liking your new way of showing stuff...with red arrows to subscribe and ...big wordy pop-ups...sorry you went that route, because I am less likely to watch your videos now...Janis

    • @schmitt313
      @schmitt313 5 років тому

kookatsoonjan when someone is providing free videos for you to watch, you really should not criticize her or she might just decide it’s not worth it due to all the buttholes who don’t appreciate her efforts. Then all the people who are thankful and appreciate the fact that a wonderfully talented artist is sharing her talent and advice for FREE, won’t get to watch her anymore. That would be a loss way worse than whatever gripe you have with her promoting her awesome channel.
      Just sayin....
