How to Choose & Use Red in your Watercolor Paintings

- Red is a glorious, vibrant color, so why is it sometimes so hard to paint with it? I’ve made a LOT of mud out of my red paints over the years, and I’ve learned a few things about using red that I’m excited to share with you in this free video lesson.
If you find that your paintings featuring red tend to look muddy, or that mixing red doesn’t give you the bright colors you were looking for, I have some solutions that will help you paint with red more confidently and keep this amazing color vibrant, rich and beautiful.
Top tips:
1. Remember that red is a dark value color. To create contrast, surround it with light value hues, or dilute it to make it lighter.
2. Choose cool reds for brighter mixes of color.
3. Dilute red paint with water to make it look brighter or to create a more luminous, light value of red or pink.
4. Mix red with green to create neutrals and near-blacks.
5. Start light and build up to create richer reds.
Mindset matters, so when you’re working with red, paint with confidence and energy to see your paint and brush respond with authenticity.

I learnt a lot from your demonstration Angela thanks a lot
Excellent demos and discussion
Thank you, Angela. I signed up for the bootcamp, even though I'm not a beginner. I think we all need reminders on how watercolors work best.
Thanks Angela. Always informative. Always enjoyable.
An excellent demonstration of how to use reds. I have often had reds turn muddy and now I know why. There was so much information in your demonstration that I will need to watch the video a few more times but thank you for the help in understanding and using reds.
Thanks so much for this explanation Angela. As a beginner I appreciate these tips!
Thank you Angela for your Friday classes. Tonight's helps so much for mixing colors. I learn from them as well as your workout. Can't wait for bootcamp.
Thank you Angela! I learned even more about reds than I dreamed about.
This is a super video for better understanding of values in color. Thank you as always for sharing. You are a generous soul & gifted artist and teacher.
This is wonderful Angela. Choosing colors to make a painting pop is an art in and of itself. Thank you for this gift ❤️
Thanks Angela. You always simplify things in a way that makes it so easy to see and understand. Now I get it! I’ve had some trouble with this and now I know why. Love colour so much I sometimes forget that values are so important. The visual with the black and white was really a great way to illustrate this.
Great tutorial, very informative. I would love to see more on colour thank you Angela.
I really enjoy these discussions on colour as I find them so useful. Could we have more of these please Angela? Also thank you so much for sharing these tips with us.
Thank you Angela l just finish the video!
Really informative. I have no idea how to mix colors.
So excited for the for the coming course!
thanks Angela........very helpful...........looking forward to watercolor bootcamp!
Great topic and demo as usual! My favorite red is Quinacrodone Red - just a bit on the cool side, but close enough for me to use as my primary red. I like to use Permanent Magenta to darken it for the deep, dark reds, and it makes fabulous fire-engine red and oranges with Transparent Yellow or Nickel Azo Yellow (PY 150) which is my absolute favorite yellow because it's so vibrant and transparent.
I love my reds. Although I have quin pink, quin violet, quin coral, my transparent red (warm) is pyrol red, my lt cadmium red I like for mixing my greys. My quins are for balancing my purples to my fav quin coral (which I love for direct strokes that really don't lift). Very beautiful explanation of reds. Also the short fast points without brain overload. 🤗
Loved this video! I have to admit that I am one of those who always ended up with muddy color when using reds because I didn't really understand, so thank you very much for clarifying the difference in using cool or warm reds especially for mixing! Magentas and vibrant colors are my favorites anyway! Can't wait to work on this in more in my paintings! Thanks for all of your free content!
Thank you for all that info. Really helpful.
Exactly the topic I needed right now. Absolutely brilliant 😊. I find my reds more temperamental in how their washes handle!
You're such a great teacher! Red is my fav color (always as been in everything!) but I never thought magenta as a cooler red! Thanks for that.
I’ve done your Bootcamp and it was great, so great that I’m doing Watercolour Workout now. Super content. I’m loving it so much. I also enjoyed this discussion of “red” lol - I think I already made all the yuk colors possible from warm reds, but never quite understood that switching to a cooler red might work better. I just started buying mixed pigments. Let Daniel Smith do it. Anyway, thank you!
Excellent video and explanation about how to use a red colour - thank you Angela.
A terrific demo on reds! They can be trouble. Thank you!
Thanks for a great video on reds. I have a hard time trying to decide if a color is a warm color or a cool color.
Thank You for the Red lesson...
I'm in! Free course?! You don't see that very often! You explain things very well, easy, enjoyable! Thanks so much, looking forward to learning more!
Hi Angela. I loved this video on color theory. I would love to see more demonstrations just like this one. I would also like to see more videos about color values. Thank you so much.
Hi Angela! So excited some of us have you twice in one day! From shelley, michigan
Thanks for the expertise, I am often focused the difference between colour photography and watercolour painting.
Thank you Angela. Yours is the most helpful demonstration of red I've seen. I will use this in my next floral work. I could never get the pop from reds that I was looking for. TTFN. Sam.
Hi thanks so much! I have always struggeled with various reds and could not understand why it did not look vibrant. I kept on using darker reds and they just appeared liveless. Now I understand it and looking forward to experimenting.
Thanks for this demo on reds. I have also noticed how difficult it is to get an nice orange. I love magenta and now can mix it more confidently.
Thanks Angela very helpful.
Thanks!!
This is great, thanks!
Thank you! I’m excited for the bootcamp.
Sue, I'm in the LMA FB group with you, and I just signed up for Angela's bootcamp, too! See you there!
yay!!
Thank you!
Angela you always make using a certain colour sooo much easier & your explanations are amazing. Thanks you for this! I can’t however find the area you indicated below where one can sign up for your free workshop Feb. 27, 28 & March 1....please help. I don’t want to miss it.
Thank you Angela :-)
Thank you, Angela. I learned so much from this! I always tell people that with watercolor you work from light to dark, as opposed to acrylics, oils and gouache you work from dark to light. Is that correct?
Hi Angela, What about cad red light? I really appreciated seeing this video about reds. Thank you!
Thanks, Angela, for a thoughtful and informative video. Also for the opportunity to join watercolor bootcamp.
I love the casual look - you on the sofa, just talkin' as if we are sitting there with you!!!!
I would love to go over yellow 's. 😽
I could really use a video on working with water color under extreme dry weather. I spend a lot of time in the desert south west and Mexico. I’ve moved to pastel for those times when I’m in the desert especially when painting Plein air due to the frustration. I tried mixing a little ox gall but that didn’t seem to help.
Hi Angela , Thanks for Super duper Video. I would love to join the boot camp, but can’t see the link. I want my mojo to water color back. Thank You so much 💐
Hello, a little late with viewing but I would love a class on the colors which push... you talk about this during your videos but would love one just on this subject.
I love that idea!
Excellent. I never would've considered magenta for my palette before this. Now I'm super excited to try it. Also, I just watched Steve Mitchell's latest video right before this one. So I totally saw an elephant when you bled out the brown/black. It even had eyes for a little bit. Lol
Rebecca Lyons I saw an elephant too.
I did the same thing and saw the elephant right away. Funny!
I don't even have a "real" red in my palette. I find the color intimidating - not only to work with, but to me it's an aggressive color :D I have carmine and magenta, that sorts of reds...I don't think I'll ever "be friends" with a true red :D I love when others know how to use the color though :D
I understand totally so I just stuck to using transparent reds starting with the pyrol red. But when I personally just dropped in a light red cadmium or scarlet red in my sky with the cobalt blue, the most beautiful greyed sky appeared. Cobalts and cadmiums are not totally transparent so their strong points are their beautiful greyed out or slightly blurred view. So they help my either make very moody skies or push back things to create dimention. At least in my case that was how it happened. Well wishes for you. I enjoy these positive tutorials.
I have winsor red, pyrrol scarlet, alizarin crimson, and permanent rose as my warm and cool reds. I’m thinking of keeping the pyrrol scarlet and alizarin crimson as my reds to pare down my palette. What do you think?
Thanks for your helpful videos. I struggle with mixing the proper colours for beach sand. Can you help?
It’s been awhile for me, so I’m also interested!
Mary Simons I live in South Africa and would like to sign up for 3 day free boot camp what time will it be so I can check whether time will work for me.
Angela, this was very helpfu. However, I am seeing strong granulation in the red flower 11:42 into the video. I didn't think Cad. red did this. I can also see strong granulation with the neutral mixture. Am I wrong or is this a property that can be expected with reds?
Got here late. I just started using a new brand MaimeriBlu watercolor. I love the magnetta. It is transparent and is a very rich pigment and beautiful. Check it out. Thanks for the reds review Angela. Learned a lot why i have problems with some reds.
Maimeri have been around since 1923.
@@crimejunkie1 Thanks for the info. It is a new brand for me and i love the colors. Have already bought quite a few. Very satisfied.
Ahh i see you meant new brand to you, yes they are very beautiful paints, rose lake and dragons blood are my favourites 🎨
OOPS! Found registration! Thanks!
Watercolour bootcamp with angela fahr
Hmmm, I didn’t know red as a dark value. Good to know that it’s better to use magenta when I wanna mix it. A couple of ”ahaaa” here.
Where is the link?
I always thought Cobalt blue was pure blue?
Thanks!
