Classical vs. Flamenco guitar: A tonal comparison of two guitars

  • A viewer suggested I do this awhile back, so here it is! I'm playing the same music on both of my guitars so you can compare them. I used the same mic array and positioning for both, and I also have the same brand of strings on each. The microphones used are rode NT-1A. The classical is a David Schramm and the Flamenco guitar is by Bruce Wood. Enjoy!
    Samples include Tarrega - Lagrima, a solea compas, a buleria falseta bit by Juan Serrano, a Handel piece that uses a capo, and of course Villa-Lobos Prelude 1.

    They are the same,but flamenco guitar has that angry kind of more spanish undertones,maybe it's the wood I don't know,but i would definitely buy flamenco one.

    Flamenco does not sound right on the classical but I see no reason classical pieces cannot be enjoyed on the flamenco guitar. Both great sounding guitars. This is helpful since I've been going over this in my brain.

    Dr Antf 's video seems to over-emphasize the difference in loudness of flamenco vs classical. In this video the flamenco guitar is not much louder but that may be the way the guitars were played. The classical guitar definitely sounds more mellow in this demo.

    Classical= Mellow sound, suited more on single note play.
    Flamenco= Vibrant sound, suited more on strumming, tapping and fast single note play.

    Soundwise I'll take classical you have more nuances. Flamenco guitar is more one dimensional sound. I love Flamenco music and have seen the Great PacoDeLucia once.
    So if I have to choose it's Classical guitar. But I don't like to choose so I want both ;).
    I have Yamaha APX6 NA so it is like hybrid nylon string.
    Question what is neck shape these guitars U-shape or D-shape ? I have custom made electric guitar which has D-shape I like it. My Yamaha has thin C-shape and it is bad for Barre chords for me. Hand get tired very quickly.

    When u pick a tone on the flamenco guitar, the tone sounds longer than with a classical one ,doesn't it ? That would be why the legato technique (flamenco) is way easier on a flamenco guitar, or am I wrong ?

    Both Guitars use Nylon Strings. Alot of musicians who are on a budget would play Flamenco Music on a Classical Guitar by slapping on a set of Flamenco Strings, which often use Black Nylon Trebles.

    • @DVSPress
      @DVSPress  Рік тому +1

      Flamingo strings are a marketing meme.
      They're no different in materials, even they color the strings sometimes. The biggest tone difference is in the guitar itself, the action, and how you play it. Most flamenco players I've met just play "classical" strings.

      Because there really is no difference. Flamenco guitars are just classical guitars focused on certain traits while classical guitars really differ and depend on the taste or music you want to play. For flamenco you just aim for brighter sound and less "overtone pollution" than for most classical/contemporary music. I actually prefer the sound of flamenco on a deeper sounding guitar with more overtones, adds a whole another layer but it's a matter of taste really - I used to play with a guy who loved the brighter, flatter sounding classical guitars for classical music! Fun fact: we were literally like ice and fire, I used to really be into darkness, melancholy and dissonants in music (I still often like this kind of music, I'm also playing with microtones atm - a whole new world) while he preferred quick "runs" and classic harmony! :P

    which cost me around 1200$ and when i compared it to my Manuel Rodriguez C12 Classical Cedar Pau Ferro
    which cost me 380$. I got disapointed, i found that my C12 has louder and deeper sound than my FDV Spruce Flamenco. am i missing something here? isn't it Flamenco supposed to be louder and deeper?

    Hi, David Stewart! 🙂
    I hope that you answer to me after 7 years of posting this useful video! 😉
    I've got so many instrumental guitar songs. (New Age, Pop, Folk, ...) 🎶🎵
    But I can't recognize the guitar type of some songs! 🤔
    There are guitar songs that I don't know if their lead guitar is Classical guitar, Flamenco guitar or Steel String guitar! ☹️😔
    Because the sound of guitar in those songs is more different than regular guitars I listen to in UA-cam. 🙁
    What can I do? 🤔
    Is there any other place than social media platforms that I could ask & post my question with music sample files? 🤔
    Thanks.

    Is the scale length of both guitars the same? I use a classical and a flamenco guitar for playing flamenco. the action is set the same on both and I use the same strings on them,BUT, the classical model has 5mm longer scale length which leads to a bit higher string tension and greater volume. I find myself preferring the classical, even for flamenco, but it does have action under 3mm.

      Well, the 'better' tone on a classical guitar has a lot to do with the action. The higher the action, het better the tone. In your case I would go for a quality student flamenca negra (samen woods as a classical).

    • @Morten_Nielsen1979
      @Morten_Nielsen1979 5 років тому +1

      @@genustinca5565 I have never heard that higher action yields a better tone. From my experience, I have a feeling you are right though. Can you tell me more about it? Does a Flamenca negra generally have a higher action than a blanca?

    • @vascolub1
      @vascolub1 5 років тому +1

      Higher action definitely yields a better tone. For sure. Professional concert guitarists often increase the string hight of their guitar when playing very grand concerts (so the bring it up even higher than the standard action concert guitar set up!). It gives an even deeper and more projected tone, but makes it more difficult to play of course. I also notice it in my own guitars. My concert guitar has a higher action and sounds fuller and carries further than my flamenca negra. However, flamenco guitars also have slightly narrower body, so this may also be an influence. I have never owned a blanca but from what I have seen they have the same action as negras.

    • @Morten_Nielsen1979
      @Morten_Nielsen1979 5 років тому

      @@vascolub1 Thanks for the insight. A problem with high action though, is intonation. On my classical guitar the G-string causes an intonation problem if I take a standard Am, for instance. I am practising a piece right now, where I have decided to always play the Am as a 5th fret barchord due to the poorly sounding G-string. This would probably not be necessary, if the action had been lower.
      Besides intonation, the G-string seems to be the weakest point of a Classical guitar. I heard an interview with a luthier who said that it is difficult to get a good and clear tine from the G-string.

    The thing is you can play classical pieces on a quality Flamenco (negra) and it will still sound very good. But when you play flamenco pieces on a classical guitar it lacks a certain sharpness. Probably due to the lower action on a flamenco guitar.

    • @DVSPress
      @DVSPress  6 років тому

      Generally, it is easier to darken your tone than brighten it up. If I had to pick only one it would be a negra simply for that reason.

      There's a guy on youtube who plays without nails, and there were guitarists throughout history that did it, but the technique is quite different. Virtually all Classical guitarists today use nails. Nails offer a wider range of tonal options and really excellent control of attack. I have several videos on them if you care to look, on how to grow and shape the nails and easily generate a wide variety of tones on the guitar.
