THIS Guitar IS CHANGING MY MIND About ACOUSTICS ($200 thin body cutaway)

- This is the new Thinline acoustic (3.5 inch thin body) from Firefly Guitars. In the past, I've not been a fan of thin body acoustic guitars, because of their sound, or lack thereof... this guitar is changing my mind. Although slightly quieter than a full thickness guitar, the tone is the same.
This guitar here: guitarsgarden....

A friend got one of those firefly thin body acoustics. He didn't like the sound. I kept it for a couple of months. I got a humidifier that you drop inside the sound hole. After a week I took it out of the case( after market). I played it for an hour. It made a big difference in the overall sound and tone. Myself, I like it a lot more than my Epiphone or my fender acoustics. He got it back and swears I performed magic on it. Lol. He plays it more than his old Gibson J45 he bought in the 70's. Some may not like it. I definitely am a fan.
Wow!
Bought, one bad neck 😢 b/e need fret work needed! Quality control is on materials not playing ability! ,but $200 get you a playable entry level real wood! Firefly needs to do better on playing,a players guitar on budget on the Malibu Lp, and 338 put a real humbucker at bridge, plus a knock off roller bridge on both! Wow sound with ez of playing, the lp is laminated and heavy so not a on stage player! Mitchell Ms 450 lite weight LP style, good pickups, good neck, tuner's MF stupid deal of day,$200 that model no longer produced! That guitar studio/stage no problem!for me better than firefly LP in that price range! The acoustic entry level of martin, Taylor guitars waste of$$$ buy the acoustic firefly instead!❤❤❤😅
You're confusing playability with tone.
The reason of the small frets is that whit an Aqoustic guitar you need contact whit the fretboard/fingerboard to get the right sound , and whit speedy playing on an electric guitar often you do not contact fully to the board , thats also why many electric guitar-players really can not play an Aqoustic properly
As someone who plays both acoustic and electric guitars, it's really nice to see some of the excellent youtuber guitar reviewers that I respect looking at acoustics!
I have been super impressed with what I have seen out of Firefly guitars so far. My latest acquisition is the newest gen FFLP with the "set-through" neck joint, belly cut, and stainless frets. I would put it up against any $600.00 guitar I have ever played. It's hands down the best budget guitar I've ever come across. How they do it for $200.00 is beyond me. I just wish this quality level of budget instruments was available in the early 80's when I started playing.
Anyone out there looking for a cheap acoustic (no electronics) with a solid spruce top, I’d recommend the Mitchell MD-100S (NOT the MD-100). Solid spruce top, rosewood bridge & fretboard, laminated mahogany sides/back, binding, and even an abalone rosette. Sounds and looks great, light as a feather, and CHEAP. In fact, they must have been too cheap because they are only available used now. They’re out there for about $100.00. Perfect practice acoustic. I bought mine in 2007, and recently wanted to replace the nut. I had a hard time finding the right size, so I emailed Mitchell asking if they sold replacement nuts. He asked me for my shipping address and sent me a new one for free…. and I didn’t even ask for it! A 16 year old $129.00 guitar, and they sent me a free nut with no questions asked. When’s the last time you heard of customer service like that?
I have 1 acoustic, had it for many years, a giant body Guild that plays & sounds great, but is huge & cumbersome. A smaller, lighter unit with a cutaway and a pickup? And still has good tone? I'm in, I just ordered one, you should get a commission Max. $226 shipped. I don't get all the comments saying sold out?!? This will be my 6th Firefly. Thanks Max.
It’s absolutely amazing to get such a quality guitar with a spruce top, active EQ, for $200? I’m just completely blown away at all of these guitars, hitting the Internet for under 500 bucks. I love the thin acoustic look and feel.
Love your videos and your playing. They just released 25 of these and they are nearly soldout. I bought one after watching your video. Can't wait to play it!
Hi Max,
Here's a follow up. I cannot thank you enough for your review of this guitar. I've been playing for sixty years and this is one of the finest guitars I have ever owned. In my opinion it's perfect in every way. I got mine last week and don't want to stop playing it. I set up every guitar I own with very low action and number 9 strings. I know others who may disagree, but that is what I like. I've chosen three gear reviewers on youtube that I trust and you are one of them. IMO this guitar is better than the Martin I bought two years ago, eight times the cost. In fact, I am thinking of selling the Martin and buying a couple more of these. lol Thank you again for your excellent council. Shalom/gw PS FYI, I'm a retired EE and both a full scale and RC pilot.
Just for grins and giggles, try running it through a vintage tube overdrive with some spring reverb. You get a very haunting sound when everything is dialed in right.
I developed tendonitis in my elbow from carrying kids and I can't play a full body acoustic without a lot of pain. Found an Ibanez Talman that is about 3 1/4 at its thickest and works great. It is better plugged in, mainly because I use such light gauge strings (.008s) but still good unplugged.
Video request: Do you still have the full body? Would love to hear both models side by side!
+1
Yeah .. The cool thing about an acoustic guitar is as they age ..
The wood mellows and the tone and volume continue to improve,
They're finally back in stock this week!!! I've been waiting for months for them to get back in stock...so I just purchased one today. I didn't go with the thinline though. They've got both the thin and thicker ones available now.
I am a smaller built person and I started with a dreadnought which was hard for me to play. I now play with both an electric and thin line making it a lot easier to play. With a mod amp I can get an acoustic sound with my electric guitar.
Your candid observations & open mindedness is helpful to entry level consumers.
Mine is awesome. I had a Taylor that I sold and this sounds just as good if not better. The Fishman is a great feature. If you were to buy just the Fishman on Sweetwater, it would cost more than this guitar. Very happy with my purchase.
Beautiful! I love the thinner body and that forearm cutaway. I guess today was acoustic guitar video day! 😁
I've had two Firefly dreadnaughts, and both experienced some pretty serious cracking. I would love to have the thinline acoustic, but living in Arizona, I would just be inviting more cracking. That did not, however, stop me from buying one of their new Super FFST in matte black, which is a spectacular instrument.
I'm in far west Texas. Got mine about 3 weeks ago but still letting it get acclimated (been a dry Oct/Nov). Tuned it up a couple of times and it sounds nice, but we'll see if it holds.
Do you use a humidifier? Arizona is very dry.
I need that comfort arm rest....I have issues with my acoustic hurting my arm.... ebony bridge pins and bone nut and bridge changes any acoustic....and yes frets are my Achilles heel.... awesome video 😎
I have full body acoustics for playing live but I also love thinline for practice. I recently got an Ibanez Tim Henson thinline nylon string that I absolutely love cuddling with on the couch. I cant put it down. It is just so effortless to play.
DI on that doesn't sound too bad for the price.
Nembrini makes an awesome acoustic IR plugin that is perfect for taking DI piezo sounds and making them sound like real guitars mic'd up
Valid points. I also never understood small frets on acoustics. Refretted my Martin with Jescar mid-jumbos. Made it a totally different (and better) experience. Keep up the great vids!
those were some really nice sounding acoustic runs there in the beginning, very flamenco
I'd love to try a budget acoustic with frets that were closer to what you'd expect on an electric. I agree, it would be a pretty smart business move to be the only company offering that type of option.
🤟😁👍I have a disabled friend that can't get his arm around a full sized acoustic. We've been looking for a smaller body acoustic/ electric. I'll try to run one of these down for him and give it a try. Thanks.
Hey, Max. Sidebar... I'd like your feedback as another video if that's cool. I feel like Harley Benton and Westcreek are each working on their reputations while we're all in some kind of "guitar company rennaisance" with new company names, improving quality, and new pricing structures.
At first, I was euphoric that I can afford a well made guitar. But I'm starting to realize there are still some pitfalls to be aware of. Even Harley Benton and Westcreek are part of the problem. In fact, maybe they personify it. Everybody knows they can make a genuinely great guitar. I mean, WOW! But for some really confusing reason, they aren't consistent even within a proven model. I know of only one model that hit perfection and just rode it out to the end, and that was the Westcreek Revenge. Now THAT was a stellar success!
But I can't name another one. From any company. Here's the weird part. Some small company produces a monster sales success! - and moves on? I bet if they ran another batch, they would sell every single unit on reputation alone. And yet, people who don't play guitar still haven't even heard of Westcreek. Even more bizarrely, I bet Westcreek hasn't even decided whether they even want to run another batch of the Revenge money-maker. And the reason I don't have a Revenge? - is because while I changed my mind about the color, they sold out. I'll regret that for the rest of my life. LOL
So the inconsistency is one thing. And another thing is the flashing speed each run sells out in. Every model sells out in days if not hours. The major guitar outlet chain stores all seem to be falling apart, but mom and pop stores aren't sure what to gamble their capital on. So I end up on UA-cam, and if I find something I like, I still have to watch the whole video. Then if I still like it, I buy the guitar and come back to UA-cam. If I see a lot of other videos favoring the guitar, I stand pat. If not, I go back and cancel my order and start the whole process again.
I mean I REALLY value your impartial and super informative videos, Max. But I need you to make a video when I get some money, because I can't wait. I am dying to find that great guitar under $300.00 and I don't want to miss that opportunity. Each great deal vanishes like a pond mirage on the road ahead. My first two new guitars in years, were a Groove from Canada via eBay, and a Latitude Equator from Amazon, both thanks to you, Max. And I will be eternally grateful.
So I guess that's a lot, but I hope you might do some videos about some Westcreek guitars. I feel like Harley Benton had a turn, and to be honest, I'd like some more of your opinions about Westcreek products. Then I'd like your commentary on the validity or the fantasy of the "guitar rennaisance" if it's real, what is it and where does it seem to be going?
Also, Max, nobody I heard, is talking about how it's not always easy to upgrade a small-brand guitar. It would really be helpful if somebody would advise us about the workarounds. It's smarter to buy a new pickguard with no screw holes, or buy a Walopus drumskin, and do the DIY cutting and drilling on our own. I heard there are tricks to installing upgraded pickups. And I'll bet you know some good tips on buying a guitar and not regretting it later.
Anyway, while you're off TCBing, I'm repeatedly checking in to see if you've posted a new video yet. So I'm just killing time by writing this huge-ass Comment, so I understand if you don't have time to read it. Take care and thanks for everything!
For what you pay and what you get...these FireFly guitars are unbelievable.
I have two LP's, one SG, one 338 and just recently got the strat version in the FireFly line, which I must say is the best of the lot so far. The features on this strat style guitar just blew me away i.e... Canadian roasted maple neck, roasted ash body, bone nut, stainless steel frets (not a fan of those frets, but still) locking tuners, steel hardware and decent sounding pups and it came playable right out of the box with a very minimal set up.
Let's face it, for one you can't even find just an unbranded roasted neck for less than $300.00 and this guitar was $149.00 plus shipping...I could go on and on...alright...I'm done gushing.
However, back to the acoustics, when it comes to a thin-line acoustic guitar, I prefer Martin's triple O series i.e 000-28 EC or non sig. 000-28, 16 and 15 as they deliver a more sweet and haunting tone, which is more than what I am hearing here.
That doesn't mean I won't buy one! Good job FIREFLY keep it up. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace
You're right on the money here Max. I have two 'skinny' acoustics, a HB and a Fender. They both sound like biscuit tins.
Ta.
What kind of strings are being used is a big difference between heavy and light can you make a videos on that thanks alot
Seems to have a mid-treble forward sound that emphasizes definition, like a Taylor Big Baby. Nice for cutting in a mix but I have a Korean Tanara just barely bigger still not full size with much more bass which can be nicer for solo or vocal fuller accompaniment purposes.
Went back to your first Firefly vid. I liked that one better, it was fuller but still had good highs and mids
It sounds good, it would be interesting to do a side by side sound test with a full size,
Me too. I have a taylor grand auditorium, but have been considering getting something smaller, like a big baby or a GS mini. The smaller guitars are just more comfortable on my right shoulder to play. Been looking at this thin line, but just wondering exactly how much difference there is between the two
Got the full-body version, will be getting the skinny one but they are soldout right now. They make great guitars !
They're back in stock now.....FOR NOW.
Thanks for all the cool stuff you review...
My pleasure!
This could be the right acoustic on a budget for me but unfortunately in Europe we don't have Firefly.
Aaagh! I was waiting for the part where you say that the frets are beautifully rounded. I don't know how expensive for them is to do that, but I figured they would do it on their acoustics too. Great guitar nonetheless
IYV has one, though shipping makes it feel expensive. I'm hoping Amazon eventually will carry it.
Do you know what the following specs are? Oddly, the manufacturer does not say. Nut width, and string spacing at nut and bridge, scale length.
Thanks. Great review. Is this one also thin neck? I have short fingers.
Would have loved to hear a comparison between this thin line and a firefly full body or any other full body acoustic. I love thin lines for playing live and my number 1 is an Ibanez thin line since around 2005.
Hi Max. I got mine last week. Magnificent! I can't put it down. Thanks buddy. Note: I bought several guitars you recommended. My wife doesn"t want me to watch you anymore. I guess She's not going to be happy. Lol Shalom/gw
Do you think you could weigh it and tell me how heavy it is? I need to start playing standing up (usually play sitting and in classical position), and my shoulders are not taking the weight of my guitar very well. Mine is not heavy (almost five pounds) ... I might be shopping for a lighter one, but I still want a nice sound...
I've got a couple Of wide body guitars that I don't play because of their width. I often think about taking off the backs and removing about an inch of width from each. 🤔
Evgery Firefly Guitar I Have Purchased (I Have 5 Of Them) Have Been Awesome! Very High Quality! Now I Want That One Too!
You were saying to avoid a thin line acoustic guitar but I do really wanna get a Yamaha APX600 which is a thin line acoustic guitar. But did go thru all the reviews saying the APX is a great guitar. Already got myself 2 dreadnought acoustics & trying to get a thin line for a change. So what say you.... Is it worth my money on the APX?
As always, thanks for the objective information. I always benefit by paying attention when MAX talks.
I like the stainless rounded fret idea,
Is any of it solid wood?
Do you find that the comfort edge makes a difference on the thin body?
Nice sound...or is it the playing? 😊
Mine arrives tomorrow.
Tiny frets are my main problem with all the acoustics..
Amen preaching to the choir... everything needs jumbos... stainless or Glass frets
Personally i swap vinyl strings on to my acoustic. It's not for everyone but super comfortable and easy to play
Try a Fender Newporter ... no skinny fret there
Should i get this firefly, a Orangewood, or Harley Benton acoustic? I cant make up my mind.
To my ear, Orangewood sounds like vintage American made guitars....clear and resonant
When Fender first introduced thin line acoustic/electric guitars in the 1980s, they sucked, and I mean HUGE!! They had vitrually not acoustic output at all and NEEDED an amp. Today's selection is much better, and even the really cheap, $100-200 range thins do at least OK, and if you go to a higher price point, they just get better! I am sure the Fireflys are a great value. It sounds great. Great video, as always, Max!!
If this had an electric guitar profile neck I would buy one.
I am searching for a solution. I’m older ripped my shoulder and full size acoustic hurts my shoulder. Need something thin to learn on
Do you know where I can get a guitar with a Floyd rose system for $150-$170? Not real floyd rose bridge but it still does the same thing
I would choose a Laurel Canyon l-100 because I have one that I chose over Martin and Taylor
Very interesting guitar for the money. I've casually looked for an affordable acoustic to learn on and this might fit the bill.
I like big frets but not ball ends. Just slick
are those steel or nylon strings?
Pretty cool Max...
Piezo quack always sounds to me like the strings are bouncing loosely on the bridge saddle.
Perfect for the couch.
Max, as the Eskimo who lit a fire in his canoe said, “ I wanted to have my kayak and heat it too”
You can’t have it both ways.
Nice looking guitar. Acoustic tone is ok, nothing special. The direct tone has the usual Piezo quack. That said, the bones of it are good. X bracing, solid top and finish touches are nice, except as you pointed out the fret ends. This would be a candidate for an upgraded preamp.
Taylor doesn't add the arm bevel until so high priced I don't know cause it's not even a possibility I'll ever be able to afford one. I have a 314 Taylor with no electronics.
I have come to believe Maxxxwell Carlisle and James Reeves are the same person prove me wrong
whats a better buy? this or a talman?
I played a Talman and the older Fender Strat acoustic. Both left me unimpressed. However the main downfall of each was the PU system. On thin body acoustics the PU makes all the difference. Check out the Fender Acoustasonics. They are pricy (On sale right now at Guitar Center) but they demonstrate how much improvement can be made with a modeling pre-amps.
Great one
UA-cam would not allow this former premium member to watch this since Aug 27, forcing some other streaming unit they approve at top buck.
So what Mexican restaurant can we catch you at this weekend? :)
You're really selling it, but damn man, 4 minutes in and I still haven't heard it yet 😂
Edit: ok, sounds great. Might be just what I'm looking for.
Agree about the frets!
Mahogany back & sides or laminated Mahogany?
Lam
Wowowowow
3 1/2 inch thick, thin body? Most thin body guitars are closer to 2 1/2 thick. A full body is 4 inches thick. So this isn't really thin, I suppose it would sound better than a 2-inch-thick guitar.
My Washburn came with bigger frets and it chews the strings up!
Anyone know the neck profile?
Violão bem bonito gostei 👍🏻
Why not convert a Regular Acoustic Guitar to have a thin body by cutting the height of the ribs down?
I think this could be easily done with a carpenter saw, a hammer, chisel, and elmerrrs glue. Might look good...
Not bad man.
Thicker body guitars often sound muddy to me. I just prefer my musical instrument to be thinner.
Pretty weak, but if you’re buying a thin bodied acoustic, you’re probably intending to play it plugged in anyway. If you just need a banging around practice guitar that you can throw in the back seat, this might be OK.
Too bad there's no straight way to buy those FF guitars in EU.
Dissappointed in the direct sound. Doesn't capture any of the accoustics. I thought would with a built in mic
2 hours after loading this vid and they're sold out...
Nope, just ordered one.
Some expert luthier needs to invent a headless acoustic guitar.
hey Max...i cant seem to find YOUR signature model...i watched the vid..love it as always..could you give me a stock nuber or an inventory number so i can become an Owner
Nice beginners guitar.
Vinyl strings make ever acoustic comfortable and easy to play. Just saying
They're sold out!
They're back in stock now. Finally.
Better for your shoulder
I just dont care for the shape
Looks cool but doesn't sound great.
1st! ?
You made it!
I just love your hair! That's all I'm gonna say! Pantene Pro V or something else?
AND...its sold out.......
