Caran d'ache museum quality pencils. Love the tutorial!
Oooo...will have to check them out! Thanks for sharing, Patricia!
Thank you !! I learn so much from you and your videos! I love your added camera! It feels like you are talking to us in a class room rather than just seeing your hands move while you make your beautiful art :) thank you for sharing and teaching us so much!!
You are so welcome! The second camera worked out since I was talking as I was demonstrating. I can't do that on my other videos because they're all sped up.
I've been using the Maribou crayons for about a year now. I get some beautiful colors blending them with my fingers on my canvases.
There is also a clear blending crayon that makes the color move even more. They are completely dry after about 5 hours. They are my favorite because, as you said, they feel like butter. The colors are wonderful-I think I have them all. Thanks.
I think I'll be adding more colors to my stash of the Marabu. Love them. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, Caroline!
Rubbing alcohol from the drug store seems to move soft pastels around more than water and the drying time is much faster.
Excellent tip, Leslie! Thank you for sharing!
Omg thank you
Thanks Betty! Very calming, listening to you as I was painting.
Wonderful! Thanks for taking me along!
You answered so many questions I have had in mark making!
Thank you so much for sharing😊
You are so welcome! I'm so happy to hear that, Vicki! Thanks for watching!
loved this mark-making tutorial! great resource
Yay! Thanks for watching, Christi!
Betty, your art videos are the best I’ve seen! So very helpful and because of you I have been able to work with new ideas and develop my art even further.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this ❤️ this helps me immensely!!
I'm so glad! Thanks, Leigh!
Thank you Betty for how transparent you are about your processes. So much appreciated ❤️👍🏼
You are so welcome, Laurie!
What fun and so informative. Thanks so much Betty!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Betty, you are so generous with your free videos sharing your techniques and supplies. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Very informative! Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge.
You are very welcome, Sharon! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Love your mark-making tools!
Glad you like them, Stephanie! Thank you for watching!
Terrific info for a beginner such as myself. Much appreciated! Thank you🌼
You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful to you, Coreen!
This is so fun to see!
Thanks, Jody!
I have the white art crayon I got from my art supply store. You’re right, Betty, they are so smooth. I absolutely love using it for making marks. I highly recommend.
Wonderful! I'll need to add white to my stash!
Thanks for sharing! It's great to see what an other artist recommends.
Glad you liked the video! Thank you for watching!
Great video thanks Betty - always good to see how different art mark makers perform. You are right about the video - it was choppy but I soon got used to it - no bother. Cheers and thank you again for sharing your wonderful talent and knowledge with us - you are a very generous artist.
You are so welcome! I don't know why I had issues with the video this time. It could be that I was using a layover to show me and my desktop at the same time. I'll have to test it out and make some adjustments for the next video. Thanks, Deb!
Thank you for sharing what you use! ❤❤
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing Betty! I got that Stabilo Woody some time ago thanks to your advice. Plus I find the Lyra 9B dipped in water is my go-to for markmaking. I've also been experimenting with artist-grade, very pigmented soft pastel painted over with Golden fluid acrylic Titanium White for activating the canvas and adding some atmosphere to my work.
Love that! Thank you for sharing, George!
This is great. I absolutely love marketing before and after and I'm obsessed with drips. I love seeing all the choices. I took a screenshot of the final so thanks for adding it to the end!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for watching!
Great mark-making collection, Betty. Thanks so much for sharing, bc this is the video I needed tonight. I have an organizer wallet of Reeves watercolor pencils, Koh-I-Noor Magic (mixed colors in each pencil) colored pencils, china markers, charcoal and graphite pencils. My zipper bag holds Prismacolor singles. Then in my tool boxes are brush markers, water brushes, Tulip fabric paints, Liquitex acrylics and Daler Rowney acrylics. What I love best is just laying everything out and playing. I have made value charts in the past, but never a smudge chart. Great idea! Namaste'. 💖
So glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
whelp, just bought some of those watercolor art crayons! excited -- thanks, Betty!
Wohooo! I think you're going to have fun with them!
Thanks Betty. This video is very helpful.🌺🏵🌻
You are so welcome! Glad to hear that you found it helpful!
"Messy is fun" Loved that! Oh and several vids I've watched today by other people have been choppy so I don't think it was you. This was a great exercise, I will probably do this with my own so I have a "cheat sheet" to reference. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching, Joyce! And, maybe it's not just me with the choppy video!
Hello Betty
I stumbled across your videos and I need to tell you how amazing your work is, as well as the narrative you offer whilst painting. Fabulous work and invaluable insight, which has helped me so much in inspiration and the process of creating. Thank you x ♥️🇦🇺😃
Wow, thank you! I'm so happy you found my channel and my art, Carol! Welcome!
Allo Betty from Canada! It waz fun and différent that vidéo ! I love them! Juste to say those Marabou art crayon à total différente expérience on prep with gesso first !mutch mouvement ! Paper or canevas ! Have a beautiful summer ! 🙂🌻🌷🌼
Thanks for that, Sophie! I agree...I bet it just glides right across the gesso. Can't wait to play more!
Great video! I love my woodys and use them in my final layer all the time. I also love oil sticks by Sennelier and use them in my last layer on top of acrylics. I will definitely try the Marabu paint markers!
So many products to try, right?! Have fun creating, Annette!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge 🙏🙏
You're very welcome, Dagyom! Thank you for watching!
Hello from Sweden. The best video about markers i have seen. Thank you so much ❤️ Unfortunately It’s hard to find the most of this in Sweden. We don’t have so much here.
I'm sorry to hear that, Kitenga. I'm glad the video was helpful to you just the same. Thank you for watching!
Betty, just a side note: you've given me much more confidence with mixing colours. Sometimes it's just as simple as adding white, which I'm loving doing. Thanks!
Yay! I love hearing that! Keep on mixing, Terry!
@@BettyFranksArt I'd love to see how you mix your colours because they're very clean and bright, No mud! Would you please send a link for that? It would be much appreciated.
@@pamzavada5269 Hi Pam, I don't specifically have a video on mixing colors. But, you might see me mixing colors in some of my videos where I'm working on smaller pieces. If you go to my homepage, scroll down to the section called small art.
I really enjoy this kind of video, learning about some supplies and how they work. I just got some similar to those Marabu Art Crayons at Winners/HomeSense in Canada (I think they're owned by the TJMaxx people and in the last year or two they've started selling art supplies by MontMartre, an Australian brand, at great prices compared to, say, Michaels). The ones I got are shimmery metallics and they are called "Twistables Metallics." Very creamy. I tested them just on black and kraft paper and they are gorgeous.
Those crayons sound wonderful, Janina! It's fun to try new products!
Super informative ❤❤❤
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate your generous heart in sharing so much you have learned. july 2022 florida
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much, I love "mark making". One of my favorites is a stabilo pencil, don't remember the number.
Oh! I totally forgot to include that one. I have it somewhere in my stash. Love it, too!
I am loving that Art crayon :) I found something a few months back by "kingart "called artist mixed media gel stick... the marks are just like butter I have the 12 pack. They will smudge and water soluble too! You are the best betty, always giving and helping others.
Thank you for sharing that with me! I'll check them out. And, thank you for watching this video!
I just looked them up. They look just like the Marabu ones--creamy!
Hi Betty, I ordered the 18 pack of Woodies yesterday. It comes with a sharpener - I'm so excited! They should be here sometime today. I can't wait to use them! Thanks again Betty, this was great & had lots of info.
Wonderful! I'm excited for you!
They just arrived!! Big giant yay!!
@@terryhorowitz7076 😍
Helpful! Thank you :)
You're welcome, Jonell! Thanks for watching!
One can always use the crayons available but the neocolor have an amazing pigmentation, they will show brighter and have a better lightfastness. If you want your art to last for a long time.
Yes, you are absolutely right, Rita! I like to suggest using crayons when someone is just getting started and isn't sure they like using them. Once they discover that they like mark making with crayons, they can invest in the really good stuff!
fun..!!
Thank you for watching!
I think you would love the stabilo and the Faber castellated gelatos
I have used gelatos in the past when I created mixed media pieces. Lots of fun!
Great video and great info! I have not used the woody's, and I want to get those paint pens. I have used Posca pens. It's great to know that you can get the Lyra in non-water-soluble. I did not know that. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching, Julia!
Betty, I think you would enjoy the Magnus watercolor pencils by you large pieces. They have a thicker core and an amazing light fastness. So your marks wont change color with time, unless you want a surprise.
Thanks so much for sharing that, Rita! I'll check them out!
This is a great reference for swatches of the tools. I’d like to learn more about the purpose of “mark making” and how to incorporate it into a painting. I know you loosen up with scribbling, which is so fun. But is there more to it than that? Do you think there’s a place for it in non-abstract pieces?
Hi Jane! Good question. I have always loved mark making...and lines in nature, downtown buildings, etc. It's something I'm very drawn to so I have incorporated it into my artwork. I start with very loose marks in the beginning and middle stages, but I'm more intentional on the final layer. I would suggest that you try it in your non-abstract art and see how it looks/feels to you.
This is very helpful, thank you. My question relates to, many of these tools i have tried, and don’t layer on top of acrylic paint very well. How and which to layer within or on top of acrylic paint? Even on canvas they don’t lay down well. I see them at their bast on paper works.
It's true that they probably work best on paper. Canvas is fabric with too many nooks and crannies. I have no issues using any of these on top of my Nova Color paints (that dry matte). I have had issues with paints that dry with a shining finish. I wasn't able to make any marks on them. I immediately stopped using those paints!
Some weirdo put a bad comment on here. I sent a written report and two regular ones. Looks like it's gone. Gotta keep the focus on your art. Interesting notes today. Good for everyone to have an example sheet like that, especially in the beginning.
I saw that offensive comment and reported it and it was automatically deleted. Thank you! And, yes, great idea for new folks to create a sheet like this as part of their practice!
@@BettyFranksArt , I used to think comments disappeared when I reported them because they suddenly weren't there, but if I signed off and back on, they were still there. I believe it used to be that they needed 3 reports before they would remove something. But this one was so off topic perhaps they did it early. Did you see the comment immediately because I believe it had been there 20 or 30 min. when I saw it.
Why would anyone do that?? It's terrible. They have nothing else to do?
Great video Betty, thanks.
@@terryhorowitz7076 Can't control others, but I can report and delete! 😁Thanks, Terry!
@@sand3882 I think I saw it within the first hour of posting my video. Good to know about it not disappearing until several folks report it. Thanks for sharing that!
Thank you so much Betty for sharing your knowledge. Difficult to know what products to buy without first seeing what they actually do. The art & crafts stores and sites can be overwhelming. Really appreciate all you do!!
Glad it was helpful! I agree...so much out there! Thanks for watching, Lisa!
Those art crayons look delicious! Do you use oil pastels? There are water-soluble versions, too. Thanks for sharing.
I don't use oil pastels, however, I have heard that there are water-soluble versions. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much!
You're welcome! I appreciate you watching, Kim!
That's great to know!! Thanks
What happens if you try to use regular crayons that kids use? Like crayon crayons? And also, can you paint over these with acrylic paints without problems, like supposedly occurs when trying to paint over oil paints with acrylic paints? Love your videos and art. Thanks.
Hi John, you can certainly use Crayola crayons. You'll find that the colors are not as intense. You can paint over them. On occasion, the paint won't cover completely (because it's wax). I love when that happens!
Thank you so much Betty ! for this video. QUESTION … anyone ? I want to paint messages over acrylic on linen canvas .. what would be my boldest non smudge option ? Thank you for any guidance 💓🦋🌷
Good question! If it's covered in acrylics, I would say that it probably doesn't matter if it's linen. However, the paint you use will matter. Some paints with dry with a shinny finish. I find it very hard to make marks on top of those types of finishes. Nova Color Paints dry in a matte finish--easy to make marks over it. I can't think of a bold non-smudge option. Can you protect the marks so that they don't smudge? That will give you more options. Here's a link to a video on how I protect my marks and varnish my artwork: ua-cam.com/video/bVACgRad2Qk/v-deo.html Hope you find it helpful! 💜
One of my favorites that is not on this list is the Stabilo All pencils. They are water soluble. Another that is not on your list is the Gelatos by Fiber Castel. I also love and use the Neo2 and Lyra water soluble. China markers should be in everyone's stash, they are cheap and a staple.
Curly Tea, thank you for those suggestions! I've recently found out about the Gelatos & would love to check them out.
Yes! I totally forgot to talk about my Stabilo All pencil. Love it. I used to use Gelatos many years ago. They are lots of fun, too. Thank you for sharing!
Have you ever used oil sticks? I haven't used them, but was wondering if you use oil sticks do you have to varnish differently?
Hi Sheri! I don't use oil sticks because they NEVER dry. There's a spray varnish on the market that covers oil. Thanks for watching!
💗💗👍🏿👍🏿👀👀 5/13/22
Thanks, Raye!
Betty…new sub here. I’m very interested in being able to make marks while working with acrylic paint. Can I use wax crayons when I’m working with acrylic?
Welcome to my channel, Mimi! You can use wax crayons, but keep in mind it'll create some resistance and when you go to varnish it, it may not cover all those marks. I hope that helps!
Hi Nancy! Would love the link to your art supplies
Here you go, Annie: www.bettyfranksart.com/resources Thanks for asking!
OMG you cracked me up when you caught yourself. We love you even if you can't pronounce
sol-YOU-ble
Yes! It's just one of those words that I can't seem to remember! 😂
Hi Betty, will all of these mark making tools retain (archival) their color overtime if varnished? Thank you and btw you paintings are gorgeous 😁
Hi Louis! To the best of my knowledge, they should stand up to the test of time after being varnished. Honestly, I haven't been around my art long enough to find out for myself. But, from what I researched, it should be okay!
@@BettyFranksArt Ok.Thank you for answering.
Do you use fixative on the crayons, both water soluble and not?
Hi Margaret! I use a spray fixative to secure my marks. Here's a video: ua-cam.com/video/bVACgRad2Qk/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
Oh..just saw the link.
Awesome, Annie! I'm glad you found it!
Can you please send me the link to the list of all the mark making tools you used on this video??, thanks

Thanks for watching! 🥰
Oops, I forgot ask my questions. Are soft pastels the same as oil pastels? Do u ever use oil pastels?
I don't like to use oil pastels because they NEVER dry! These are not the same as oil pastels. These will get varnished and will not have an issue with drying.
Ok thanks!
@@terryhorowitz7076 oil sticks would dry though....eventually. Oil pastels won't though. However, there are varnishes created to fix them if you are curious.
@@stephanie_smith Thanks Stephanie! I've gotten great info here.
like the whole tray of grey pencils lol
😁 Thanks for watching, Natasha!
It won’t let me edit, they are faber castell gelatos
😁 I knew what you meant.
You forgot to take water on the one you did not remember the name of!😊 But thank you for a good video!!❤🙂🌼
Oops! Sorry about that!! Thanks so much for watching!
I think intense outliner is not water soluble.
Oh! I'm not familiar with inktense outliner. I'll have to research that!
The outliner is included in the package. It will say outliner at the bottom of the pencil.@@BettyFranksArt
