    Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm creating an abstract painting in my sketchbook art journal using a limited palette. I didn't speed up the video, so you'll be watching me in real-time.
    My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. You'll see me create from start to finish. There's no music, however, you'll hear me talk through a lot of my process and discuss products/tools that I'm using.

    Hi Betty, and Thank you for this little beauty. I want to say, I laughed so much when you suggested speeding up the video, because "if you are used to watching me do it fast"... I mean - it such a pleasure to watch you real time and speak real time. I think it's fascinating to see how concentrated you can make your style on the small surface. I actually need to practice more on a small scale. So, that's what I am taking home from this, as well as the memory of the lovely work you produce.

      Yay! Working small is wonderful. What I love best about it is that you can get through a painting quickly. It allows you to go through all the stages in a short period of time. Thus, allowing us to learn in a shorter period of time, too. Have fun creating!

    Great video. Thank you for sharing. I just love your artwork! I am a little confused as to what makes a warm or a cool colour. I would have thought that green was a warm colour and tuquois was cool.

    • @BettyFranksArt
      @BettyFranksArt  Рік тому +1

      I group the colors in very general categories. If I really break it down, a green can be either warm or cool. All colors can be either warm or cool. I generalize by grouping green, blue, purple into cool and red, orange, pink into warm. I use yellow with both my warms and cools. I hope that makes sense! It's my way of keeping my colors bright.

    You paint fast even in real time! Or maybe it just seems fast because I'm trying to absorb what you do while watching it 🤷‍♀️ I really liked watching you work on paper and talk about how it was easier than starting on canvas at first. I am going to try this in my sketchbook and see what I think. I also thought it was cool that you only used cool colours of paint because it's different from what I usually see in your videos.

    I really enjoy the insights in your videos. Biggest take-way for me was values. I realized that I've been focusing on colors and that the values were pretty bland. Thank you! Also. I have a ton of tube acrylics and would like to make more liquid and put in pots, ready to use. Is there something I can add to make them more fluid without losing the intensity of color?

    Hi Betty! At about 10 or 11 minutes in you started talking about how using sketch paper vs good paper held you back for almost a year, & then also going from paper to canvas was difficult (perfectionism at it's height, I'm familiar!). It made me realize how similar my journey has been to yours, as in same background in CS, same age, started painting same time, love of flowers, self-taught, choosing abstracts in acrylic, and yeah, same hang-up! Lots of times the crap-paper one looks better! Okay, so I am a huge introvert and not yet selling. My question is, were you confident enough to start selling your art while still in the paper stage (smalls)? Or did you move to canvas first, & then sell your smalls after gaining recognition?
    No one has seen my art & I don't know the point at which I should try to show and/or sell it. I feel like people are only buying large art, & that costs large $ to make. I'm happy to paint only for myself, but sure would like to know if other people like it before moving to canvas :). I'm not on any social media, so double-difficult, yes? Any pointers?
    Sorry, I'm a little windy today ;)

    • @BettyFranksArt
      @BettyFranksArt  Рік тому

      Hi Yope! Good to hear from you! Yes, seems like we have a ton in common in terms of our art and careers. So cool!
      I started posting my art on FB early on. I joined a bunch of FB groups plus I posted to my own business page. As I posted my pieces (even when I was just learning), people started to purchase them. Not many, but I had a few sales here and there. It was a (slow) start, but it taught me a lot. I took baby steps to figuring things out based on the sales that were happening.
      You don't have to be on social media to sell your art, but it sure does help. You can go the gallery route. Look up Tough on Art (Jen Tough) on your favorite podcast station. I recently discovered her (and met her in Santa Fe when I was there earlier this month) and she does an outstanding job of sharing the steps needed to be in a gallery.
      In terms of art sizes, people like every size out there. My most popular pieces are my 5x7" pieces on paper + small ones on wood. Don't discredit the smaller sized art. Plus when people are worried about money (like they are now), they can afford small art vs large.
      Wishing you tons of success!

    Lovely video, thank you for sharing. I ave a question. What happens if you like one of your paintings in your sketchbook as a final piece? Would you tear it out and sell it? (I feel it would be impossible to replicate it onto a larger canvas). Would you leave it , but scan it and sell the art as prints, or do you just accept it's just going to stay in your sketchbook for your eyes only? I ask coz I'm finding it hard to differentiate from working in my sketchbook and / or final pieces. Do I see everything as a final piece, despite where I'm creating it?

    • @BettyFranksArt
      @BettyFranksArt  3 роки тому +1

      Great questions! The sketchbook is just for me, however, I'm toying with the idea of creating a coffee table book using the images from this sketchbook. Due to it's odd size, I wouldn't offer prints of it. I hope that helps!

      Hi Simone! I'm inspired by my love for fields of flowers and nature. I take shapes from my memories and put them into my paintings. I hope that helps! No issues with them sticking together. I had an issue with one of my other books, but that was because I didn't let the pages dry before closing the book.

    Hi Betty I live in Australia and don’t find the Nova paints available. Is there a similar quality in another brand that you know of.

      Hi Robyn, Nova is only available directly from them. You can find my favorite go-to colors and a link to them here: www.bettyfranksart.com/favorite-nova-color-paints

      Isn’t Betty so sweet her responses are so kind. Mine aren’t anywhere as sweet. So, You must not paint or not paint a lot. It would cost a bundle and a lot of work to block each video like this. Most of us use plastic to protect our surfaces. I had an art board and my sister loved it and bought it from me. She hung it on her wall so we are all different in our preferences.

    Die Studien im Buch sind von der Farbigkeit sehr schön, jedoch alle unterliegen den gleichen Kompositionselemente und Dynamik,am Ende nicht toll, eher Lanwrilig, da Wiederholung. Schade , denn der Malprozess ist i teressant, aber plötzlich tritt eine Rückkehr zur Masche!!

    Cringed😫 😮when you put did not clean your brushes and knife between between colors. Your jars of paint must get muddy very fast. I did my best to ignore those parts, but the creation process was wonderful to see.

      Hahaha....actually, they don't get muddy. When I dip my brush in, very little of the other color gets left behind. Thanks for watching!
