Chris Weidman Sends Fans a Message Here: ua-cam.com/video/1YJRtcqqQJk/v-deo.html Docs say he will likely be able to train in 6-12 months following surgery.
I watched the Silva fight live. I noticed it broke right when it happened. When I watched the highlight of Chris breaking his leg it was very surreal. You wouldn't believe that story line if it was told in a movie.
Most MMA fighters reference the concept of shin training. Essentially creating micro-fractures to strengthen the bone. There is some debate on if this works since the bone doesn't respond as well to lateral forces compared to compressive forces (body weight). The key is that long bones are strengthened more with compressive forces - so think running, HIIT, and jumping. Most MMA fighters have trained to a level in which their bones will be stronger than the average person. Barring any medical conditions, these types of fractures are a perfect storm of variables. Given the strength of leg kicks, the perfect kick in the perfect area can cause a fracture such as this one regardless of how strong the bone was trained.
Honestly I don't think it can be avoided. It also happened to kickboxer Tyrone spong, who is used to kicking and has one of the hardest kicks. It's just a freak accident caused by angles reinforcing certain bones. He kicked a bent knee at an angle, which is a stronger knee than if that knee was not bent.
I don’t think he should go back to fighting. His body’s been breaking down on him and I think that strike being the first is a heavy indicator of a pattern in his most recent fights. He’s been getting brutally knocked out, clearly looking slow etc; his body just has too much wear and tear at this point. He’s been talking about how the worst case scenario could lead to an amputation so I don’t think think that will help his already lackluster performance in the octagon

Love the video as always, Dr!
Thanks!
This injury is always so difficult to watch! But thanks for the video.
thanks. Glad you found the video helpful!

Yea the coincidence is pretty crazy! Can't imagine hearing the sound of that break first hand.
I watched this live. It was late at night and I was trying to comprehend what I just watched. I was like 😱😳😫 that look like it hurt
I saw this happen on Ppv. Every time I see him try to stand on that half leg it makes me sick to my stomach. That was awful.
Yea for sure. Definitely a gruesome scene for some.
ooooohhh..you do ufc fights too!
im liking this channel
saw widemans and silvas injuries..live🤢
Oh that must of been a whole other experience in itself together!
@@SonamMD not my cup of tea..haha ha
@@kYA00h yea for sure. i can only imagine!
Spooky how this is the SAME EXACT injury that Anderson Silva took against Chris Weidman years ago.
I know!! The irony is crazy.
does this injury have anything to do with the strength of the shin and the bone density of the fighter? can it be avoided?

I know you're a doctor about how are you so calm reacting to a bendy leg? It's just rough 😔 Is there anything that makes you sqeamish still?
Surprisingly not much. It does come with time haha. We didn't all start out this way.
Ughhh, I can only watch these sports injury videos in small batches. There's a reason I got into engineering and absolutely nothing medicine related!
Haha yea for sure. :)
