Professionalism, that is when an individual conducts themselves in a manner consistent with the competence or skill expected of said professional, has nothing to do with laughing or smiling, unless you're in a job where those things are strictly prohibited or very much out of place (funeral directors making dead grandfather jokes would be HIGHLY unprofessional, primary school teachers laughing about pedophilia would not only be unprofessional but also call in to question their ability to properly do their job). Yeah I used to think it was the WW2 generation and before who pulled the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" bullshit the most because the boomer during the 60s were like "fuck it man, the systems gonna fuck you anyway"...but if you think about it the WW1 generation was gonna burn down DC if the vets didnt get benifits (see: "bonus marches") and Eisenhower had the bighest tax on the rich ever...but the Boomer fuckers are the worst at the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" bullshit. Alot of the newer generation of Americans are cooler. And Waters an old black woman still screwed his name up but the younger black woman next to him caught it and looked over at him instantly. Generations are a trip man.
Not all of us are completely out of touch. One thing to remember is that the trend of making college impossible for all but the richest started back in the early 80's. We called it Reaganomics. Now it is called business as usual. And yes, when I look at these old white guys running things, I am appalled to realize that many of them are my age. When I started college, during the Carter administration, a union carpenter's daughter could pay for everything with a Pell Grant, which was available to middle to low-income students. When Reagan became president, suddenly Pell grants practically disappeared, and you had to borrow, or be independently wealthy to finish college. At the same time, tuition started ballooning, while wages stagnated. This was not something the Boomers started, but maybe we were asleep at the wheel when it started happening. However, blaming a generation for the structure of our economy is not productive. Look at all the things Millenials get blamed for. Is it all true? NO. I can think of a couple Millenials who definitely are making a difference. Look at AOC and Ilhan Omar. When I was their age, it was unthinkable that a working class girl could get elected to Congress, and they did it WITHOUT corporate money. If you don't like how people are running things, then maybe you young folks should get up there and help them run it. It is your future at stake. I wish you well.

I grew up hearing that going to college was essential. I HAD to work my ass off and get good grades to get into a good college. It was the responsible thing to do. Despite good grades, I couldn't afford college. So I joined the army, because, I was told, they would pay for my college. But after I got out, it wasn't even close to enough money to get my degree. So I borrowed the rest, because the college promised it provided career experts that would help me find a job. After getting my masters, the only thing those experts found for me were unpaid internships, which I worked, for years, because the people I slaved away for promised my efforts would lead to a good job. It didn't. So I was told that what I REALLY needed to do was learn coding. So, I did. More debt. And everywhere I tried to get a job coding, I'm told I'm too old to start in that field. Now, I'm an Uber driver, drowning in college debt, listening to people born with a silver spoon in their mouth telling me how irresponsible it was that I did any of that.

It’s stupid how they’re treating him like a joke when he’s just throwing casual jokes here and there to lighten up the tense atmosphere. Mans legit spitting facts and they treat him like a joke coz he’s a comedian. Also it’s CRAZY how they expect an 18 year old to know a lot about loans when they just graduated from high school and are entering college. Like???? You expect a kid who briefly learned about student loans in school to make the best decisions? That’s plain stupid
As some one who has worked in subprime loan, I have come across people making stupid decisions, even after having multiple bankruptcies in their credit reports. And that's when they have yearly household income or revenue, which are considered reasonable, and above median. So I would say, people don't register the fact they have to be responsible when managing their finances, even when they are grown ups. College kids are definitely an easy target in the hands of predatory loan retailers. If the students can't find anything better than minimum wage or some thing in their line of study, they get stuck with the debt for a better part of their productive life. They delay buying their first house, committing to a relationship, and most commonly, either delay or avoid having kids till they find a solid base. And let's say, if you miss couple of months paychecks in between, it's end of story for most, since their credit score drops to less than 600. And then there is the payday loans, and other vulture lenders waiting with 19.99% and up, loan products to hit that final nail, putting their life in misery or even worse homeless.
I graduated HS in 2008. Literally EVERYONE told me to go to school. Went for 1 year and it just wasn't for me. I shit you not we are just paying the last bill in 2020. I'm not the only one too or some idiot. Shit happens. People are still paying their loans off or never will. I have a wife and we don't want kids. If we did I don't know how we would afford one let alone send them to college.
That's the point. 18 year olds in america are meant to 'know better' and be 'smart enough' yet you're not even allowed to drink because your laws don't believe you are responsible at that age but also want you to make big decisions about money and elections. It's similar in the UK. there were banks who misinformed and practically forced students to sign up with a bank and use an overdraft facility, during the fresher fair. They strong armed students and told them to open up accounts which "they could close later if they wanted to". They were also sold the overdraft facility with "zero interest" and didn't tell them about the interest rates that would be implemented later on, nor did they inform them about the minimum amount they had to pay in each month when using that over draft facility or the minimum amount they had to pay in or pay out to keep the account "active" or their account would be closed. Social expectations keep students and the general public zombies to follow what's always been done which keeps them stupid because nobody questions it, so banks cant profit on their decisions they make. Loan companies limit the decisions students allowed to make by giving them either misinformation, that's still legal, like their selling opinionated advice and them adding a disclaimer, but also pushing them to make a decision at that time, or not informing them at all, and expecting them to read and understand the terms and conditions, that's written in jargon, to purposely make it hard for any student leaving high school to understand, but also make it difficult for any general working class person to fully understand. Then the blame is misdirected towards parents, "who should have been better informed" to educate their children. Then they blame kids for wanted to go to university when they can't afford it. It's a system that pushes forward a culture that only benefits the rich. It's gatekeeping who can and can't go to university. You can only go so far in certain fields without a university degree. Most jobs, you can work your way up, but having a qualification and work experience will make an employer choose them over the person with just experience because of the value of credentials. You literally can't become a doctor without going to school for it. Anything in medicine, law or education needs a degree. Work experience can only teach you so much. University isn't necessary for most things but there is a social culture which will gatekeep your opportunities in both ways if you attend and if you don't attend.

Look at the congressmen staffer woman behind him trying really hard not to laugh, biting on her lips.
You guys are are learning about student loan in school x?
Coz in Pakistan We never heard of something like student loan in schools!
oh my freaking god so true so so true
"Are you a Swifty" I AM DYING. THIS MAN HAS BALLS OF STEEL.

Hasan man we indians are proud of you standing up for the issues middle class americans are facing and you make our Indian ethnicity city proud and who would have balls to counter jokes in congress oh my god . You are GOAT
Bhakhts will disagree.
Indian is not an ethnicity and stupid Indians need to stop feeling proud of doing absolutely nothing.
Hasan Minhaj is a born activist.
One of those guys who just can't digest and accept disorder, just by birth.
And guys like these cause a lot of inconvenience for the powerful.
Those individuals go as legends in history.

@@Sheen023 I get that people might be only aware of one version to anything related to the terms Aryan/swastika because that is what has been widely learned in the west and is still strongly associated with Nazism and antisemitism.
However, the name Aryan is a common Indian/Iranian name which means Warrior/honourable/Noble.
Hitler used a lot of Indian sacred/auspicious symbolism and used it for his own cruel regime. However if you visit Asia, we still use these symbols (swastika) and names everywhere because they have a much deeper and cultural meaning which represents all that is good.
Hope you learnt something new. 🙏🏽

The term is literally derived from the word ‘Arya’ in Sanskrit and Aryavata which was what Ancient northern India was called.
Its mention is found in ancient Sanskrit texts dated back to 1st millennium BCE. You do know your years and how what came first works, yes?

What Mr Duffy doesn’t understand at all, is that Hasan Minhaj is not cracking jokes because he doesn’t find the situation serious, he’s cracking jokes because he finds the situation absolutely absurd!
"Are you a Taylor swift fan? Are you a swifty?" ...Imagine saying that to a 70 year old grandpa of a law maker. It's a tearful murder.. . Lmaoo.
Taylor has older fan base too. She had a 96 year (veteran) old fan
And the lady behind that Congressman (maybe a member of his staff?) was trying not to laugh.
That was funny. And true. These old folks have lost touch to the reality of the new generation.
"If you have a 20 on your ACT you're not going to Harvard"
"Or if your mom is Aunt Becky you can pay your way into USC"

the congress person got SOOOOOO heated! LOL #truth
What does he mean by 20?
(genuinely asking here)
@curry in the house not necessarily true. True, it would not be ideal, but there are other factors in your application that could get you admitted.
@curry in the house a friend from my high school got a 22 but he actually got into harvard. Cuz he he had other extracurriculars and leadership roles. Im not arguing the chances are low. Its not impossible, however its not totally improbable

@@thamomentum idk if you're just joking or not, but that'd be HILARIOUS.
imagine going to a congressional hearing and not expect to hear pushback when you waste their allotted time to get out a bad joke
Jokes are fine and all on his show but he's actually wasting the congressmen's time because they have a very limited time for questioning.
@@anonymoussecret5948 That's true. I don't think anyone would say that Jon Stewart and Colbert aren't comedians, but when they testified they were much more incisive. Even when Colbert was in character, he was still pointed. And Stewart, when he gets angry he gets laser focused and does not diminish his points by "trying to lighten the mood" because the mood shouldn't be lightened. There were still "jokes" but they were deadly. Hasan did OK, but I think he did diminish some of his points by injecting needless asides. I think that's a confidence thing, Hasan's been around for a little while but he's not nearly as established as Stewart and Colbert were when they testified.
Also, possibly, a slow-simmering anger and frustration thing vs a "still optimistic" thing. For some reason we don't take optimists as seriously as we take pessimists.
When I went to a good college in 1974 It was $3,000 a year plus Pell grants. Graduate school was 15,000 a year for a good graduate school.
The cost of college is outrageous and unjustified In my view. College is a business and no other businesses have ballooned in cost the way our colleges have. Also if students are going to go into economic servitude They better be very targeted on what kind of a job they can get when they get out. It's no longer an economy or a society where students can be creative and invest in education that doesn't bring in the dollars after graduating.
It's not fair to society and it's not fair to future generations!
