As a white guy raised in a majority not white country (tiny island in the Pacific) the bit about having a therapist that understands you is sooo important. Now back in the white world, my therapist review remarked how "affable" I was. Yeah that would be the 29 years in a collectivist society my dude, it's rude not to smile.

All right so he's showcasing unused material, and that is one of the parts of interviewing confirmed that's always uncomfortable because they're essentially scripted 'conversations' that never comes off as genuine. Only looking for the laugh and new user engagement of the material. This interview should require a two drink minimum. Best regards

Jokes aside.. At the rate things are progressing, there's NO WAY most of us will be able to compete for a traditional job, in a couple years time.. And I can't be the only one who sees this clearly coming. Can we PLEASE start changing how society works, to stop requiring all of us compete for meaningless busy work, merely to justify our survival?? After what I've been through over the last couple decades, and now being faced with this level of AI.. The next time someone tells me to "get a job" to my face, I fear I may uncontrollably punch them for it. In the west dogs have a higher ranking than kids and elderly people whereas other culture take it all naturally that it's just part of our life circle, everyone starts as a kid and if you are lucky you end up old. Child free weddings, plan sections, restaurants, old people in care homes sedated almost all day because we looking at them as a nuance a burden. I've been to many countries where people in restaurants take care of your baby like they are the most precious VIP guests and not like oh not again a family with underage people ughhh they gonna be loud

To respond to Hasan's point about therapy, AS A THERAPIST MYSELF, the reality is this: MOST THERAPISTS DO NOT EVER DIRECTLY ASK THEIR CLIENTS TO ACTUALLY CHANGE. Many therapists are guilty of "re-understanding 'the problem' over and over, until the client quits therapy." It's kind of sad, to be honest with you all. Asking a client to change their bad behavior introduces CONFLICT into the therapeutic relationship, which makes many therapists EXTREMELY uncomfortable. That is the sign of a person who should NOT be a therapist, btw.
You see, therapists are people, too. And sometimes we are guilty of 'wanting to be liked by our clients' which is in direct contrast to 'telling the client what they NEED to change, and knowing they will probably NOT like me when I tell them that.' This is called defensiveness, and transference.
That is the JOB. Do the job, or get out of the field. There are so many useless therapists in the world who, for their own comfort, won't do their job with true integrity or grit, because being 'liked' by their client matters more to them than doing their job to the fullest extent of their ability.
Good therapy, with a good therapist, can be illuminating, insightful, and can produce dramatic change in the life of a person. Bad therapy, with a bad therapist, most often produces nothing but stagnation and frustration.
A therapist who does the job of therapist for the purpose of engendering "likes" from clients is a dangerous person in the world and should probably have their license stricken. Just my personal opinion, though.
Ok, climbing off my soapbox now.

Just be REAL and self psycho analyze. Socrates said Know Thy Self. People are truly afraid to be honest with themselves about everything....even the little details. If everyone were, we would have no need for therapist.

See that is the difference between therapists and Physicians. Almst none of them care about 'wanting to be liked by their clients'. If a guys leg needs to e cut for the guy to live, they will tell it to the face regardless of conflict. And thus, ultimately, Physicians have a better cure rate than therapists.
Note: When I said Physicians I meant those do allopathy (ie, actual medicine) not scams like homoeopathy.

He's spot on. I study Chinese culture for my work in medicine and have gotten to know this truth. East Asian cultures from what I've seen believe more in collective and family support and we believe in individual freedom and family support but not in my house please. A happy medium maybe best...hilarious and confrontational. Love it. Love the animal analogy. Spot on.

As a seasoned therapist with almost 30 years experience, I really want my clients to see results and they do… unfortunately, the consequence of being “too good” is that I work myself out of a job fairly quickly. Haha. While listening and creating a safe place to express thoughts and feelings is important, I think some clients and therapists think just talking about things over and over is enough, but a therapist that’s effective has to walk the fine line of raising awareness, naming patterns, challenging in a way that is helpful (especially negative, self-defeating thoughts and stories) -but not pushing too hard, or quite simply, people won’t come back and then nothing happens. I’m actually a trauma-informed Art Therapist, and I’d highly suggest people find someone that has experience in Art Therapy or other hands on techniques- its powerful and can bypass verbal BS if someone is stuck. Particularly to address anxiety or trauma.. It’s important to work on the impact of trauma and stress by healing the emotional dysregulation and soothing the nervous system vs just talking about what’s happened. Loved this! (I’m also a cat person. Haha).

I know im just a random stranger on the internet but i wanted to share that i had a therapist for 1.5 years and it was the most fraught relationship ive ever had in my life. I still feel so angry at them and how they reacted to so much that I told them. It felt like I bared my soul and they didnt take it seriously at all. I feel angry writing about this now. Never doing therapy with a student in training ever again, even if its for a PsyD. My psychiatrist thinks a lot of my responses seem trauma based, just how strongly I react to so much. I hope I can get over this one day. Im not even really sure if my current therapist is helping me get over the last one, as much as I would like. Maybe progress is just slow like that. But what hasan said about finding someone culturally attuned is so important. I wish someone told me that going in. Sometimes I feel like that therapist ruined me completely and I will never get over my anger.

@@s0ngf0rx I’m really sorry to hear that. The therapeutic relationship is a very intimate, special type of relationship and if that trust is betrayed it’s a real violation. It certainly makes sense to me that it would feel traumatic. I actually have a client right now that had a bad experience when she attempted therapy over a decade ago (interestingly enough with a brand new student) and it upset her so bad it took that many years before she would try again. It’s very important to find the right fit. I always encourage people when they come in the first time to let me know at the end of the session if it feels right and they think they feel comfortable coming back in and if not, I won’t take it personally. As a therapist, we should be seeking therapy, and more than once, I’ve had someone pretty awful and definitely chose not to go back. I hope you find the help you need and deserve. Very sorry you allowed yourself to confide in someone and they didn’t respect that.
