Brilliant! Whilst the voice recognition makes for a cool vid, the real beauty of Android Tasker is doing this stuff without even touching the phone! Like automatically switching on lights if I get home after sunset, or switching on the underfloor heating 30mins before whatever my alarm is set to, but only if it's cold enough to need it. Beat that, Apple.
how exactly are you getting the google now swipe up to work with the auto voice command, because the only way that I found to do it causes an infinite loop
Man, you are brilliant! I have found my focus and knowledge to be a bit lacking when trying to set up commands on tasker in the past, but you have re-inspired me. This is so amazingly cool! Thanks for sharing. Peace :-)
Isn't it easier and faster to do it by yourself? Im just so greatful that when I grew up in 90's, there were no cell phones, no internet, life was so easy and simple.
To you thinking this is fake, I can reassure you this is NOT fake! I have my Xperia Z setup with AutoVoice and Tasker and it is KING! Every time I hit the voice button and say my phones name "she" responds and I can give her a command! One thing to note though is that it will only respond to the commands you set up, it doesn't automate everything from scratch! Tasker is THE best app you can have on your phone, its worth it's weight in gold! =D
Is there some sort of way that you could hook up external microphones all around the house so that way you could just speak to your system from anywhere in the house, hands-free, by a simple "ok google"? i.e. (walks toward bedroom)...."ok google, goodnight"..... and everything thing shuts off in the house. ...??? Is this possible?
I know this comment is really old, but I think it is possible. If you set up a main system, say an old computer running linux or raspberry pi, write some app to that can access all of the items you wish, like the tv, lights, ect. (not sure if anything like that already exists and can be downloaded) and combine with some speech to text program. then somehow setup the microphones around the house. Im not sure how the actual listening part would work though, would it be always listening for your commands? that would require it to always be running the speech to text program constantly analyzing all sounds, or maybe make it to constantly analyze only when you want it to, for example when you home.. activate it by telling your phone "im home" and deactivating it when you say "im out". Im sure it is possible, I dont know how exactly, but this is just my idea on how it would work
Makes sense...While automation is possible using Android, this does not exactly conform to the definition of automation. Glad you ended the debate though, that went on far too long lol. I still enjoyed the video. Can't wait to implement this. =)
It' s not about Android. It' s about electronics. I believe that creating the App was the easy part of all this stuf. I think that the difficult part is how to connect all these power enabled devices in one receiver and how this works. The android app just sends the commands to this receiver. This is the trivial. I would like to see an article on how this can be done. Good job and good luck with you career Doug Gregory!
He is using a plugin called Secure Settings. The paid version allow us to use the Google Now swiping for Tasker's task etc. Notice the icon when he swipes. It is the logo of Secure Settings.
Tutorial, please! Nothing fancy, just take us on a short tour of the hardware (close-ups where necessary) and the software (mostly, the setup you went through, and any fine-tuning, trial-and-error stuff you dealt with). I'm SO envious of your automation! By the way, which Google TV hardware are you using?
This is truly exciting! Nothing I want more than the setup you have here! Excellent job! Hopefully we can see how this works soon! If you could reach out to me, that would be incredible! Thanks for sharing!
One can do this with an Apple device. All you need is the right set up. As for Android, you are only limited to what you can do with Android. The possibilities are endless. All it takes is the right imagination with such an open OS.
Awesome. I've been trying to get a voice-activated assistant working, but I think AutoVoice is a neccesity! Any chance you could PM/upload an XML of your profiles and tasks, so I can see how you achieved what you did? Thanks!
I am just a little put aside by you saying this isn't home automation...I understand speaking and making something turn on is an exchange for a switch, but playing a movie, syncing lights with pausing, etc., is automating many processes. Also, which would be more misleading? Categorizing this as automation or remote management? The guy was in his own home making stuff happen in his own home. Do you go to "remote management" to buy a TV remote? :P
This is a demonstration of a Tasker plugin, not a demonstration of "automation". The demo relies on a Home Automation gateway, the MiCasaVerde Vera. Please explain how your question is relevant?
This is quite awesome! You have inspired me to do something similar with my lighting. I am curious how you were able to use tasker to change the google now up swype. That is the final piece remaining for my puzzle.
Voice-controlled Home Automation with Android. I'm controlling a Home Automation system using Android and my Voice. How is that title misleading? I understand where you are coming from, there is a difference between Automation and Remote Control, but understand that the Vera is the Home Automation engine, which allows for scheduling, scene programming, notifications and all the elements of "true" automation. If you weren't aware, Tasker is an automation engine as well, exclusive to Android.
Doug, I really appreciate your stuff. Is there a video on tutorial instead of a demo. Keep up the work, You have opened a can of worms and I'm looking to overhaul my home now making it more techkie after seeing some of your videos. I went out and purchased a Vera Lite and a bunch of outlets, dimmers, etc... I'm a hybrid between Droid and IOs. Is there another resource you know that works with IOs devices? Again, I really appreciate your stuff...
Quite simple really. It looks like he already has one of these installed: micasaverde[d0t][c0m] And a GoogleTV. Both systems have API's and he uses and Andriod application called Tasker along with AutoVoice and AutoRemote plugins.
This is amazing. I was able to find the Reddit post about this, however, there doesn't seem to be much details. Any chance you could explain how this is all accomplished? And for those of you who are calling him lazy...imagine how much work he had to put in to get this all working.
Wow, thats fantastic!!! I will definitively intergrate some of that cool things in my house. Everyone in my house is using Android devices from smartphones and tables to android tv boxes and chromecast, so it should intergrate well.
+1. Since you don't mention the use of an IR blaster, are you using a Z-Wave wall outlet? Most TVs don't turn on when the power's supplied (only going to standby) so I'm interested in knowing how you integrated this part.
Nope, all of this can be done easily, Tasker can actually handle this stuff. He linked all these Tasker AutoVoice AutoRemote AuHomationHD Yatse XBMC Netflix UA-cam together
Yeah. That's the beauty of technology today. You just made Back to the Future and almost every other futuristic movie feasibly come true. Now get in your automated, flying car and get outta here! ;-)
i'd be very much interested in more details of the project ... would you be willing to share them? ... i know most everything about z-wave, but the android part (and that is where it gets interesting) is a miracle to me ...
It's truly awesome, but it's actually much easier to set up than it looks. I have a similar set up, but I stopped using voice control for it since I didn't find many situations where that is actually better. These days it's either automated, or goes through my Sony Smartwatch. That being said, I have less stuff to control
My tasker has a delay when its about to talk. Like voice command then the autovoice recognize it then it speakes after 3 seconds. Unlike yours. What should i do?
Anyway, this is kind of a semantic debate now, I feel "automation" is the subject of the title and you want it to be about the apps/hw. There are videos claiming to be about automation but they have someone talking to their phone or tapping an NFC pad and a door unlocks or a light goes on. There's an explicit action to invoke a single action which to me is not automation. Automation is pulling into the driveway and the front door unlocks. PS I run a MCV and Tasker myself. Cool video
What would be even better is integration of NFC, so instead of having to tell the device your home, you just swipe your nfc tag, which is a simple enhancement IMO...
Honestly It seemed cool at first and thought it was cute the addition of Portal Bot Voice. Maybe cause he is doing it all in succession or something but it just rubbed me the wrong way... I don't honestly find ANY use for it except if you are entertaining someone romantically... "Dim lights and put on the Barry White."
This is the reason why we love Android. Also the fact that this video is 10 years old and still amazing to see.
Incredible work man. You've inspired me to start my own project like this. It's not nearly as advanced yet, but hopefully someday...
how exactly are you getting the google now swipe up to work with the auto voice command, because the only way that I found to do it causes an infinite loop
I just sent my whole Android entourage to watch this video ;) Great job!
I was thinking the same thing. For the amount of delay in the commands, I could have already done it myself.
To you thinking this is fake, I can reassure you this is NOT fake! I have my Xperia Z setup with AutoVoice and Tasker and it is KING! Every time I hit the voice button and say my phones name "she" responds and I can give her a command! Yeah, those with no tech knowledge would call it fake. Those in the know, know this is pure tech savvy!
Just showed this to my wife and she walked away saying great! Now the lights and the kettle are going to talk back to me! I LOVE THIS
This by far out shines any other home control app I have ever seen. Genius!
Was it just me or he turned the lights on and off and on a lot? Moderately impressed.
Makes sense...While automation is possible using Android, this does not exactly conform to the definition of automation. Glad you ended the debate though, that went on far too long lol. I still enjoyed the video. Can't wait to implement this. =)
This is exactly why I prefer android over iOS. Great job. PLEASE for the good of man kind make a tutorial for us.
Please do a tutorial video for this, or a simple walk through of the details of how it is set up.
It' s not about Android. It' s about electronics. I believe that creating the App was the easy part of all this stuf. I think that the difficult part is how to connect all these power enabled devices in one receiver and how this works. The android app just sends the commands to this receiver. This is the trivial. The secure settings plugin is what did it! Thanks again for the motivation!
Awesome work. I can't wait for a Tasker interface for Google Glass, that will be AWESOME!
Thanks for telling iSHIT fans how Strong is Android, and thanks for explaining to us the real power of Android OS!!
A benefit to this would be it would force people to enunciate properly out of frustration if it doesn't understand you.
Awesome. I've been trying to get a voice-activated assistant working, but I think AutoVoice is a neccesity!
Any chance you could PM/upload an XML of your profiles and tasks, so I can see how you achieved what you did? Thanks!
Can you post a tutorial on your g+ page or website? Including your tasker profiles and which z wave modules are needed.
Now its up to you to take this guy's help and create a tutorial Armando... I soo love Android :)
Awesome video Dough Gregory... simply Awesome!
Andriod is our future, is it part of virtual realty. Realy unique.
This is a demonstration of a Tasker plugin, not a demonstration of "automation". The demo relies on a Home Automation gateway, the MiCasaVerde Vera.
Please explain how your question is relevant?
Try the Autovoice app for Tasker, it's like Google voice search, it recognizes what you say and does stuff based on the context.
Would love a link to a more detailed description of the setup
Doug, I think you forgot to credit Assistant Event for Tasker in your software list. Awesome demo!
Can you explain with more details? what are you using to automate the lights and turn on TV, what modules, not only software.
Hello,
I'm just wondering how do you chain commands in Tasker? Like "Command1 AND command 2"
Thanks :)
Thays pretty bad ass. What app did u use and what phone to do all this. How are the lights likned? By a reciever or did u wire it in to a computer?
This is quite awesome! You have inspired me to do something similar with my lighting. I am curious how you were able to use tasker to change the google now up swype. That is the final piece remaining for my puzzle.
Random question, what are those things on the wall? Sound absorbers? They look very nice not some cheap foam kind stuff.
only one question ..which phone are you using ?
Cool. So, how is it done? What hardware, software etc..
Voice-controlled Home Automation with Android.
I'm controlling a Home Automation system using Android and my Voice. How is that title misleading?

If you weren't aware, Tasker is an automation engine as well, exclusive to Android.
Can you do this all with just the starter kit Doug, or is this more along the lines of the Family package?
Doug, I really appreciate your stuff. Is there a video on tutorial instead of a demo. Keep up the work, You have opened a can of worms and I'm looking to overhaul my home now making it more techkie after seeing some of your videos. And a GoogleTV. Both systems have API's and he uses and Andriod application called Tasker along with AutoVoice and AutoRemote plugins.
Far ahead of your time you were. Don't tell Jeff Bezos. He'll probably hire you.
Did you use the same device to power lights and TV?
Awesome demo. Inspiring me to wire up my place similarly.
Can you link to the components you used? (I've already got Tasker, XMBC, Yatse, etc.)
1:19 universal logo 0:00-3:22

Yes, we need a tutorial. I want this thing for my home, too. This is the future.

Nope, all of this can be done easily, Tasker can actually handle this stuff.
He linked all these Tasker
AutoVoice
AutoRemote
AuHomationHD
Yatse
XBMC
Netflix
UA-cam
together
Only with Android... now thats power in your hand! am using Nexus 4 too! would love to try all this!
May you make a tutorial about this job? This is awesome, I wish do it.
If was possible, post the place where you bought your z-wave modules.
Thanks!
are you using x10 for the lights? or another connected light system?
Awesome job! :)) Never thought this was possible with Android until i saw this vid. Could you make some tutorials and stuff?
This is too fucking good. I mean, i knew it was possible and all, but i didn't know it was possible to integrate with Google now. Real sweet work!
How does this only have 300 views..sharing this awesome video.
Can you control your fan ? also, if yes can you control the speed of the fan and dim the lights in it?
Could you confirm or post a video showing what hardware is being used for the lights, TV, etc understand the software bit now.
I know you can use any android phone because it is just a series of apps and plugins, but what phone is used in the video?
Which technology are you using to switch the lights on and off ?
Doug which z wave modules are you using? it says 4 but no specifics...
Is this recorded with Google glass?
Yeah. That's the beauty of technology today. You just made Back to the Future and almost every other futuristic movie feasibly come true. Now get in your automated, flying car and get outta here! ;-)
Who is holding the remotes behind you?
How is it done
i'd be very much interested in more details of the project ... would you be willing to share them? ... i know most everything about z-wave, but the android part (and that is where it gets interesting) is a miracle to me ...
What tv brand is this?
How do you get to turn your tv on? What module are you using?
You opted not use Unified Remote.?
That "shutting down". Voice really made me freak out
sounded to me like its from portal
it is
It's truly awesome, but it's actually much easier to set up than it looks. I have a similar set up, but I stopped using voice control for it since I didn't find many situations where that is actually better. These days it's either automated, or goes through my Sony Smartwatch. That being said, I have less stuff to control
This is amazing. How can I get this. Are there step by step instructions
What does the input switching? one of the zwave modules?
Was the "shutting down" voice from resident evil?
My tasker has a delay when its about to talk. Like voice command then the autovoice recognize it then it speakes after 3 seconds. Unlike yours. What should i do?
Well done! You, sir, are the winner of the internet today!
whats the internet tv app youre using?
Anyway, this is kind of a semantic debate now, I feel "automation" is the subject of the title and you want it to be about the apps/hw.
There are videos claiming to be about automation but they have someone talking to their phone or tapping an NFC pad and a door unlocks or a light goes on. There's an explicit action to invoke a single action which to me is not automation. Automation is pulling into the driveway and the front door unlocks. PS I run a MCV and Tasker myself. Cool video
Can you set google now to sound like potaos from portal?
what controller did you use
Is this available on all Android uesers or only Google
Now there's "Ok Google" everywhere which makes it a hell lot easier!
What app links the light settings to the tv controls?
how much did those acoustic treatments cost ? and where can i find them ?
FUTURE!!! Im gonna love this decade aren't I
does it work on any wifi item without the modules and just the apps on the phone ?
What phone are you using?
can you make a document listing the exact things you did to let this all work?
Looks great. Now put microphones around the house that are always listening to 'ok google" or "Ok jarvis".
Can you explain how you set up XBMC and Netflix to work with Autovoice? I'm trying to set up a profile which automates them.
Anyone calling this a "fake" is just clueless. Your Android Kung-Fu is strong. This is perfect for theatre automation.
What would be even better is integration of NFC, so instead of having to tell the device your home, you just swipe your nfc tag, which is a simple enhancement IMO...
Can someone just explain how he projected onto the TV. I have been looking for that forever.
You sir are indeed the master of your domain!
Looks great, but am I the only one that would love to see some screenshots/examples?
Honestly It seemed cool at first and thought it was cute the addition of Portal Bot Voice. Maybe cause he is doing it all in succession or something but it just rubbed me the wrong way... I don't honestly find ANY use for it except if you are entertaining someone romantically... "Dim lights and put on the Barry White."
+Thaxorin go back to the 90s then lol ;)
+Thaxorin Actually .. this is a big help for old and disabled people
