Fun story about polyamory. I am (i think) mostly monogamous, but when I am single and only interested in a purely sexual relationship I don't mind being with a partner who is poly. So I hooked up with a very lovely girl who told me she was in an open relationship with a guy. couple weeks go by and I get drunk and end up in bed with a very lovely man who tells me next morning that he is in an open relationship. So fast forward couple of weeks, I still texts with both hookups and then I run into the girl while shopping and she is with her boyfriend who turned out to be the guy I also hooked up with. Moral of the story, the world is small and poly relationships are valid.

When I was in college, I had a relationship with a guy and a girl, but didn't have the terminology to identify it. It was a great experience, but I can't see myself doing it again. Been with my wife for 9 yrs (on the 26th!) and have enough trouble keeping up with her lol
As a poly person - thank you. :) There are a lot of misconceptions about polyamory and you addressed some of them from a monogamous person's perspective, which is cool. I like that you talked about how it can be kind of like an orientation. For me, I strongly identify as a polyamorous person down to my core. My girlfriend is similar this way. However, my husband has been happily monogamous in the past but is happily exploring polyamory now and enjoys it. He also likes how happy I am with my poly life and how open and honest our communication is about everything, which makes him feel comfortable to explore poly. But, he doesn't "need" to be poly, whereas I just am poly.Poly is definitely not for everybody and neither is monogamy. :) I love seeing monogamous people who don't shame poly and vice versa as well.

My girlfriend's polyamorous and when I was with her I was monogamous and was aware of the fact that she was poly. I'm legitimately sure I said something similar to, "Go play ball, just tell me who's batting" 😂 She's one of the reasons that I'm more comfortable exploring poly too tbh. I can't really call myself monogamous anymore consider that I'm with her and her/our girlfriend too now. 😂

Sometimes, however, us monogamists CAN spoeak for poly people with great effect... if we know what we're saying.
One year at the Starwood festival, I was hanging out at the Sunday night potluck dinner when a younger guy asked about polyamoury. It was his first festival, and his first time encountering such things personally. I started explaining it... the reasonings, philosophy, etc... when I realized that, sitting behind me, was Oberon Zell. His group The Church of all Worlds has held polyamoury sacred for decades. when I tried to throw the question to HIM, he told me to carry on... that I was doing a fine job! He later said that questioning people often would listen to a monogomist like me before a poly person like him, because I wasn't seen as "justifying my own lifestyle". He told me that skeptical people would LISTEN to me when I described polyamoury in a straightforward, non-judgementaln way.
Allies of all types have an important role to play in correcting misconceptions. That includes us monogamous poly-allies.
