  • In this video, we engage with a young unhoused family in Ashland, OR, and discuss the challenges and complexities of their situation. Through this lens, we also ponder the idea of "self-governing habitation zones," or "village models" - alternative housing/shelter concepts where the inhabitance of a shelter or low-barrier housing option actually make their own rules, and govern themselves.
This segment aired with our recent FULL episode of Us As We Are on Southern Oregon PBS, "Rights, Race & Rarities." Watch the full episode here:

There is nothing wrong with using the term HOMELESS. It just refers to a person that does not have a typical stick built home. Even the homeless say homeless.... There is no reason to use the phrase unhoused.

His favorite thing is not paying taxes, at 12 years old. Good job Mom, teaching him this is the only way of life. Yes, paying taxes sucks, but they also pay for nice neighborhoods, parks, safety, clean environments, but no one is teaching him that and Mom isnt paying into that at all.

Yeah taxes supposedly help pay for "nice" neighborhoods, parks, safety, etc. but they're not helping the homeless all that much. No need to patronize these people like they're in grade school.
"Mom" isn't to blame. I think it's a safe bet that "Mom" didn't choose to be left high & dry and exposed to the elements. How would *you* like to raise children under those circumstances?! So much easier to judge than to help.

This doesn't make her a bad mother! These children are well behaved and know a different respect verses spoiled, self entitled kids! I was homeless too! It didn't mean my mom was trash! She was loving and did her best as a single woman! God Bless all the homeless people out there! They're people too!

I want a free place to live. To bad I have to work and pay rent.
I just hope I'm not the only person who can see how bad this idea is.

Thank you so much for giving these folks a mic from which to share their point of view, stories and experiences! I'm doing what I can to help the homeless in my community; donating cash and provisions to the local homeless support facility, handing out $5 bills to those I encounter on the street. I'm not wealthy or even "well off", but I've made room in our budget for this. I can't witness this kind of suffering and do nothing.

Every time another benefit is offered, their numbers grow, along with the number of people who need to be hired to provide the services. It's a self perpetuating doom loop.

Homelessness is sometimes a choice, and sometimes not. I can see how living unhoused can affect the socialization, security, education, and day to day life of children, as well as adults. A “self-governing habitation zone” needs to meet sanitation requirements for all concerned, including the general public. I have to ask how are they self-sustaining without public assistance, provided by taxpayers money?

People who have lived on hard times for so long have a hard time even imagining another way of life. I could see this maybe working as a sort of transitional housing or low income housing till people start to work things out. However, I think it would be all be impossible to keep up in the long run. It would be better to get people into longer term housing. We can't just put the unhoused into a fire trap for our comfort.

Homeless should be sent to work camps with on site housing. So beyond tired of them receiving support. The majority of homeless only degradate the land and areas they occupy. The greenway was an unofficial one of these "zones" and look at how that panned out. Put them to work or or send them to a far away island.

A lot of people say this isn't how kids should be raised but putting them in a state system that separates them and moves them through different foster homes and takes there mother away from them is not the answer. She obviously loves her children and is doing the best she can. There are a lot of countries in this world where people live with a lot less then this.

Letting us "have" but the rest of the public should "pay" for a public place that you guys get to "land on" until you get on your feet isn't fair to the rest of us when we get up and work house or no house, we pay taxes for your choices. The only way I'd agree is if it was mandatory, these guys get jobs and pay. Free loading isn't fair when everyone can't do it.
I thought children were taken from situations like this? This isn't right. Mom had time to make changes years ago. Ugh whatever...

@Jay Spears what's ridiculous? We didn't need homes hundreds of years ago like you stated. We don't need them know. You're just too used to living to what "society " standard are. Most Holmes have lead and cheap wood that is causing our body and environment harm. Trees demolished, mold in our walls. Paint with so many different chemicals

Rent is expensive here in Oregon. If you're married or have a partner it helps. I am a single person with a teen. Living on one income is very hard. I fear homelessness all the time. Especially right now since I am going to be without a place to live soon. It's so very scary, I keep praying we find a place to live 😔😞
