      Yasu Leone if you make that the case, there should be regular drug tests done also. Not saying that people on drugs don’t deserve a place to stay, but being on drugs will cause more problems. Ex: stealing and violence. The tiny homes work in Oregon, but your idea would be a lot better suited to a larger city like New York where there is a much more dense population. You could have it like this place where each person would be assigned their own capsule so that they would have their own space and they would be able to stay until they can get a job and get permanent housing. This is a good idea, it just needs some more work.

      I agree. Even other parts of the world follow the housing model first and then they address the cause of homelessness. It is smart that this state follows this. I hope California is smart and will follow this model.

    Being homeless was one of the most difficult,desperate, lonely, shameful parts of my life. It eats away at your soul when you are disregarded and set aside. On the flip side, I've met some of the kindest, most generous people when I was homeless. I've learned to be grateful for things I took for granted. I realized that suffering creates a new sense of appreciation, and hardships build strength and perserverance. And God is much more concerned with our character than our comfort. Just a little food for thought ; sometimes God takes away all the distractions so we can better hear His voice.

      Off the top of my head, I know one major issue is that a lot of cities still have laws and ordinances on the books prohibiting settlements/villages like this. A lot of these laws are held over from the 70s when they were trying to curb communes from developing. So looking into your city's housing laws and doing advocacy there is really important!

    a real workable solution. So my hats off to Oregon Well done.

    I lived in SLC, Utah my whole life and I never saw this. Maybe in the year 1/2 they put these there? I think this is an amazing solution to the problem. Everybody deserves to have a roof over their head. No one, no one should ever be homeless. Nor should they have to sleep somewhere where they don't feel safe. In my opinion this is a good solution. One step at a time, just grows into more steps of getter closer to a better solution.

    • @ElinWinblad
      @ElinWinblad 5 років тому +3

      Amira Muhammad first step is lower property taxes (cities would have to cut back their spending due to less income) then ppl owning the buildings can lower a bit . But usually high demand causes high prices because that’s how it works. Increasing amount of available housing would decrease prices as it increases competition.

      @@ElinWinblad theres pleanty of houseing and people are still homeless property tax is once a year it wouldn't lower it enough compatition doesn't help with houseing it just makes the landlord be more picky on who i wants to rent it to. There are empty houses and buildings all over the united states. There are laws against squaters, jobs are legally allowed to discriminate against you if you have a crimional record or you have kids or you have no car which alot of people don't realise that if your an addict when you get clean it makes it hard for you to recover so when you can't find a job alot of times they end up going back to drugs and crime. Our criminal justice system doesn't rehabilitate people it creates lifetime crimonals. Like the room I rented in Portland where the guy managing the place would threaten me with violence if I didn't give him more money. If your roomie has mental health issues - honestly if the just grew up under norms different than your won- can be awful! I
      In most places, if you are not in a sexual relationship with your room mate is is not domestic violence, so no help unless they actually physically assault you. Heartwarming :(

    That last house, Kentrel Davis's, is adorable and the Emerald village is completely livable. The OpporUNITY village though - do they have community bathhouses, and who keeps them clean? That would be necessary. Otherwise asking for cholera, etc.

    Not a perfect solution, but better than a gutter. I would like to see ownership opportunities, and maybe some kind of mortgage guarantee, that would make it possible to move forward in life. Give them a chance to have equity that they can use to buy a bigger small house, eventually larger property. I guess it would shift to some 'investor' buying these tiny houses, then back to the same old.

    • @michelleburkholder2547

      No!No!No! Your heart is in the right place but that are the very system that put them out on the streets in the first place. Before Clinton took out Glass/Spegal homeless really didn't exist. These people need shelter and others coming in behind them will need those buildings. They are not real estate investors. What happens with that is someone will walk away with a stack of cash and everyone else will be homeless again. Isn't that how real estate works?

    • @carriestaker3856
      @carriestaker3856 5 років тому

      surreygeorge11 not you are correct, it would require SOME SORT OF FORWARD PLANNING-escrow portion of rent paid so after x amount of time you can move up or on. If a home holder was to “sell” to up coming candidate, rent is adjusted over time before your equity accumulation begins? If people are HAPPY in these villages, I see need for them expanding as only 25% of Americans who are eligible for housing assistance actually receive it!

    When the tiny house communities are already at such "established" environment wherein they are already in numbers, it can also create employment in the said communities such as being resellers of arts and crafts, where Oregon insignias or designs are created, as well as many in-house products that Oregon offers to visitors, it is going to give them employment that regains themselves as individuals, it is also not just earning a decent income, it is also being a part of the statistics of the stable ones, as many transient individuals managed to get back on their feet after the "phases of individualism" everything is clear. Tiny house communities, the best.

    Thank you to everyone making all if this possible and to all the strong. We need Universal Basic income. Is the basic human right. No more excuses for what are systemic problems and greed in our society. For dignity and freedom of choice to lead your life the way you see fit, to find your own work from within and to have self purpose, takes giant measures. This is the step in the right direction. Leave no one in the cold and no one in the dust to fall into the cracks.

    Austin Texas has started a tiny home community... Personally I think they all should have electricity, plumbing, & gas, so they can bathe, keep them cool or warm when needed.... They have to work on the premises doing gardening, upkeep as far as mowing, weed eating, carprentry work...

    Homelessness lurks close to many of us. It's always a threat to one's existence. As one ages and retires, the choices that used to yours are now limited. One always has in the back of the mind."Gee, what if I can't repair or keep up the maintenance of a home. If you have family members also living with you, they can also chip in and help, so you hold on with all your prayers to what is the one most valuable asset you end up with that can so easily be lost. Give thanks every day if you have a home and can share it.........remember those that have to get by every day and wish they had a roof to protect them and theirs. Blessings to those at this wonderful community.

    A homeless guy has been hanging around my place. He lives in his camper shell. Last month he paid $750.00 for a used sixteen foot camper. The county has offered to pay first and security for him to move into a place. After doing nothing since August and dithering with the camper he decided he'd rather live in his camper shell and is now "On safari!" He thinks he's going to nest on my property for the winter but I told him in August to get ready for winter because it gets cold here in the Sierra's. He got pissed when I told him he isn't moving into my home.
    I don't mind helping someone but when they bullshit around I don't have much pity for them.

And everyone needs to work to keep the community clean & safe - respect and accountability. Awesome

    REI in the city of Austin gives tents, backpacks, boots, sleeping bags, food,etc. - much nicer than I can afford! They have converted an old post office into a place where people can receive mail, so they’re not indigent- and register for an ID, and receive a paycheck when they get a job. They have showers, a communal area with a tv, and pol tables. There’s a big industrial kitchen, and we used to cook Thanksgiving dinner for people. There are still a high rate of homeless in Austin sleeping by the river. They come there because it’s on I-35, and they travel up and down it from winter to summer. It’s not perfect, but it’s a solution.
