0:00 - Intro
We all know and love open guitar chords, but sometimes, they can lack a strong emotion a chord progression needs. In this lesson, you'll learn FIVE chord shapes that sound beautiful and can sometimes replace your open chords!
Here are the FIVE chord shapes that you should replace your open guitar chords with
1:27 - E minor Add9
Keep the regular E minor shape and place your first finger on the 2nd fret of the A string and your pinky on the 4th fret of the D string. All of the other strings are left open creating a very different and luscious sound from the original chord.
2:36 - A sus2
Make an A major chord but then remove your finger off the B string, and that’s it! You can play the A sus2 chord instead of an A major chord to create a pretty chord progression.
4:09 - “Special” E major
The E major chord is another beginner guitar chord you might already know. What makes this shape so special is that you can move it all around the neck of the guitar. When you strum the open strings that surround your finger on the fretboard, they emit very colorful notes.
5:44 - F major7#11
To play this chord, put your first finger on the 1st fret of the low E string, your third finger on the 3rd fret of the A string, your pinky on the 3rd fret of the D string, and your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the G string. If you’re familiar with major bar chord shapes, you’ll notice that this chord is essentially the major shape but with the bar lifted.
7:22 - A minor9
Place your middle finger on the 5th fret of the low E string, your third finger on the 5th fret of the D string, and your pinky on the 5th fret of the G string. It’s not difficult to play and can create some cool harmonies when moved around the guitar.

The Emin9 looks almost like a E-power cord with the two fingers
I absolutely love the way you present a lesson! You're like the Bob Ross of guitar lessons!
Definitely channeling Bob Ross. Wish more teachers were like her (regardless of subject).
Oh yes! Totally agree.
I think it's her charisma and energy. She comes off like a delicate flower swaying in the wind, which makes her very likable.
One hundred percent.
Lets make friends with a guitar string!
Ayla, I have been been playing guitar for over forty years, and I have to say that it is refreshing to see someone teach without giving the impression that they are talking down to you.
👍
Amen to that 👍🏻
For real man she genuinely seems like she wants to help instead of showing off
Very interesting that I just posted a comment before reading your post. We are in total agreement. Ayla is different than the rest!
right? it has that vibe like shes genuinely just tryna show me something cool i could use like a friend would
This girl is secretly a zen master
@ELLIOT RODGER THE SUPREME GENTLEMAN She looks like this girl who works at the CVS Pharmacy where I live.

Ah, the Fmajor7#11, aka the Alex Lifeson chord. One of my favorites!
I have to say I am more of a piano/ keyboard player in a working band and also have played rhythm guitar for years, but because we are a Rock & Roll band I play the basic open chords and bar chords. That has always worked but I have grown to love the guitar yet feel limited. I have always wanted to learn new chords or different variations of the ones I know. There are a lot of guitar lesson videos out there. I just found yours yesterday and have seen 2 lessons. Your lessons are the best I have seen yet. Again I already know enough to play half the songs at our gigs on guitar and know hundreds more. I have been told by our lead guitarists through the years that I chop very good Rhythm cause hey, like John Lennon once said, the best Rock and Roll is simple Rock & Roll. That doesn't change the fact I still want to learn more for my own personal playing pleasure. I love your style of teaching and I hbave subscribed. Thanks a lot Ayla!
I did not know those chords were movable. Pretty cool. Good lesson for all.
I knew most E and A based chords were movable without the bar. Because it's the key of E. And what are the 3 open strings? 2 Es and an A. You can't really go wrong. Some of the open chords sound unusual but they sound good.
Ayla invented the ASMR guitar lesson videos! :-D Nobody did that before!
I need an em add 9 for war and am sus 2 for samdwich breath
Great lesson! I just got my niece a small pink Squier Stratocaster and she's been watching your videos. She's getting pretty good too, and practices way more than i ever did at her age(9yrs old). I love your guitar too, I just ordered the black BFR version.
I've been playing for 40+ years and those are some beautiful sounding chords. Thanks for the lesson 🙂
There's always something new to learn! Happy you enjoyed the lesson 😊
What a great kid. The perfect tone and methodology for teaching dummies.
Very mean comment. You need to reflect about what part of you inside needed to be so cruel.
@@marylynncrosson273 I think he means himself as a dummy lol, but yeah blunt language :)
What a great teacher !
Helping even me to add to my
Lexicon of guitar chords.
Thank you Ayla
Those 5 beautiful chords barely scratch the surface of the beauty you possess ...
The Rush chord!
Xanadu, Hemispheres, etc❤
Xanadu blew my mind, I love discovering this kind of music late at night with headphones on. It’s phenomenal
@@HappyPhantom668
It blew my mind too.....About 44 years ago!❤🙏😉
Thank you! You always make my day going, I’m 51 and a beginner and I learn so much from you. Thanks for your kind, sweet and genuine lesson
You are amazing Ayla. I've been teaching Guitar, Bass & Banjo for 35 yrs. but I have been learning from you lately. Thank you.
Listening to Alya's lessons has me learning new music skills and forgetting covid and all other hassles exist. Just chill and smiling. Thanks Ayla.
The bamboo in the back is really giving me those tropical vibes

You've got such a wonderful tonal quality in your voice for teaching....luv it
Me too
I am so glad I found your channel, even though i am not a beginner i get a lot out of watching your teaching style, you are a good communicator both vocaly and with your instrument. Thank you for sharing.
I just love the way you talk and the sound of your voice and I learned something too.great videos!
I love watching this video! Your voice is so calming, and you've managed to teach something in such a manner that you don't come across as "preachy" or make the viewers feel intimidated. As an intermediate guitar player, I'm always looking for fresh perspectives, bc let's face it, there are so many ways for those who are not very proficient, like myself, sound and play better without being complicated and discouraging!! Bravo, thank you. I've subscribed.
Thank you, Ayla! That room is a work of art. The colors, in this video are very pleasing 👌
It's great to put "names" to these shapes. Very helpful in me understanding how add 9's, 11's etc. get called these things.
You’re awesome! Great lesson 🎸🎶
Wonderful, such a calm presence. I have run across so many snobs..Teachers with unresolved issues from not achieving their dreams of stardom..
Her teachings are great, I love it. I love Am9. I can never get tired of watching this
I totally loved this lesson! Thank you!
Thank you. Your way of presenting the information is very gentle, just like you. Well done.
Love your tutorial. You are indeed both passionate and sensitive instructor in a laid back supportive way. Simple to the point and most useful. Thanks!!
To be honest your channel is one of the best I've ever seen and please make more videos like this one and can you please tell the details for that guitar, it's beautiful
Ayla I'm a beginner but wow I've improved so much I'm seeing the beauty within sounds /colours you are amazing lady Ayla thank you so very much.
The tones from your guitar and amp sound The Song Remains the Same-ish!
Love it!
uhmm...I don't relate. to me, the guitar sound of TSRTS sounds relatively different to ayla's sound on that lesson.
Amazing lesson Ayla! Thank you 🙏
Love the way you explain the uses of these chords. Great lesson!
It's very Tranquill ...the way you teach and the sound of your voice. Very soothing to listen to!🙂
Love the chords sequence from Rush's Xanadu at the beginning - so evocative 🤘
I've been playing guitar since the late 1970's, I use people on UA-cam like Ayla to refresh my memory on playing songs I haven't played in a very long time vs the lessons themselves. I really like the way Ayla easily articulates her lessons, it's very relaxing, I going to try and have my nephew who is just beginning guitar and has major self confidence issues follow her.
Beautiful guitar! Beautiful and talented player ❤
Your video's are so fun to watch and easy to follow. You are a great teacher thank you for Sharing.
Thank you Ayla you are awesome, you make me fall in fall in love with the guitar. I am a beginner. I love the way you teach

I use the open D and do the same.
These chords will give me sounds I'm interested in. 👍👍
Just want to say your my favorite instructor ever,,and I've been playing professionally since 1968.
I have only been playing for about five months now and this is the second lesson I have learn from you,the last was the 4 things I need to practice and learned from that.
The only difficult one on this was the F major7#11,my fingers do not stretch that much and that was interesting to find out.
Thank you very much for the lessons and inspiring to continue in learning the guitar.
Ayla, another great lesson. You certainly have a way to explain and demonstrate these concepts. Thank you.
I really love your style of teaching? Thank you
Brilliant yet simple lesson, loved it, thank you :)
Thanks 🎸, I'll be trying them out for sure. I have been playing since 1977 and these will make my sound more easy listening instead of playing country or rock. Thanks again. Wade Welch from Alberta Canada.

Beautifully explained.
Very inspiring young lady. Thanks for the tips👍
Thank you for sharing your guitar knowledge
You are a great teacher!
I like the D major, then come up 3 frets and lift the middle finger and drop the pinky and lift then come up 2 more frets with the middle finger up and drop the pinky and alternate middle finger down and pinky down then come back to the D major and play with middle finger up and down then pinky up and down the repeat. I found this to be very colorful. I have learned a great deal from you. You are making me better !! Thank you !!

All of them are so beautiful and awesome, Ayla!!!!!!
As usual, you’re an awesome teacher, helpful and knowledgeable.
Asus2 Get Together by the Youngbloods 1967. I was there.

Very well done, enjoyed them all. E major special my favorite
Beautiful !! ... just what I was looking for

I just play what I like, and strangely have already been playing everyone except the Fifth Metheny chord, which is, I think the most beautiful. Pat is the master of beautiful chords.
Also, now I know what I’m playing 🤓 thanks to you, and you even added a little spice to what I already play. So thanks again for a really great simple video that has inspired me to delve deeper into the instrument I love. You are a great teacher. I will be looking forward to your next 😎 lesson. 😃
Great Lesson. I am helping my nephew learn to play acoustic. This was simple, useful, & clearly-explained. Great stuff. oNe LovE rom NYC
I'm really amazed the way you teach, the guitar is my passion and been playing for a long time but just playing chords (regular positions) and little finger style, this lesson was really educational for me, I just can't wait to get home and first thing is grab my guitar and star playing those chords. Greetings from Florida!!!
Love your video, Ayla......These are all great chords to learn....thanks so much!....keep up your good work!......:)
