I haven't read everything Roy Thomas ever wrote, but the scripts he wrote for Marvel's Conan the Barbarian are so good I just about consider them canonical. I think he got closer to the original tone than anyone else post-REH, with the possible exception of Karl Edward Wagner.
I read all the REH books I could find back in the early '70s and Solomon Kane is still one of my favorites. I really liked the movie, and would like to another, but one that's darker. I'd also love to see a movie based on the real Red Sonja. The one movie they made about her based on the 'Conan' version was an abomination. Fun Fact: I have a tattoo on my arm that's sort of a collage of all my favorite S&S heroes, like Suar Peial of Atlantis, Thongor, Brak, Bran Mak Morn, Jirel of Joiry, Rifkind and Elric and Corum and Dorian Hawkmoon and Erikose and of course Conan and Kull and Solomon.... It's 52 years old and I keep thinking I need it brought back to life.
I should check these out. I've read REH's original stories, they are amazing. Anyone who digs Conan should look for a volume imo. Video got me looking on the bay!! 🔥

I find Kane more interesting than Kull too. I been picking up the Conan Omnibi too but passed on the Kane and Kull one's. Not biggest fan of the Marvel material for the other two characters. Red Sonja is licensed to Dynamite Comics I believe. The recent Marvel output tried to replace her with another female Howard character in Dark Agnes.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I am not sure anyone has. I think only 2 issues of the planned limited series placing her in her proper time (16th century France?) were ever released. It was originally coming out when the pandemic stuff started. I decided on doing the trade wait so didn't read those 2 issues. So it is likely she only appears in the Conan: Serpent Crown stuff which is one of the Conan is in the 21st century stories from Marvel.
There are exceptions, but generally speaking the Solomon Kane stories really catch fire in African settings. It seemed like that was where he really belonged, or was getting the most done anyway.
There’s enough Howard Chaykin out there: just that he is not as good as he used to be, he is cranking mostly “old guy with an opinion stuff” although if you are into noir Black Kiss and it’s sequel are a must. Would love to get this Omni, but they are ridiculously pricey. Do you have a video reviewing the film? For all it’s defects and not being Howard story it has a couple of genuine Robert E. Howard crazy moments - better than any Conan movie IMO.
Solomon Kane is such an original character. He needs more stories told in that Howard style.
I think I can safely say Solomon Kane is Howard's most psychologically complex character.
The Marvel run of Solomon Kane completely blew away the later Dark Horse comics run. Nobody can touch Roy Thomas.
I agree completely.
Roy Thomas was a really good and prolific writer. That's some great art in there.

That tattoo sounds incredible!
Wow awesome!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 it used to be... Now after 51years it's hard to mame out details... Getting it fixed next summer.
Would love to see that Tatt, you have immaculate taste. 💚
Just finished reading my copy 2 weeks ago, I really liked it, good classic stories.

Thanks!
I didn’t know Monsters Unleashed was originally an old black and white. Huh.
Yeah, Monsters Unleashed was a lot of fun. I liked the color comic, Creatures on the Loose, a lot too.
Unfortunately the price of the omnibus is quite ridiculous down here. You could sell yours and retire 🙃
Really? I might.

Yeah, I haven’t read the Dark Agnes comics.

I'm a huge Conan reader, but I'd have to say that Kane is my favourite Howard character overall.
Edit: Then again, my opinion changes with my mood 😉
Kane is a great character.
Hmmmmm....

That was a pretty good movie. I need to watch it again. I read the film novelization by Ramsey Campbell and that was excellent.
Question: is the video thumbnail a real painting or some kind of filter it looks awesome
Just a cheapie filter. I can’t convince any artists to paint my thumbnails!
Looks great!
Bran Mac morn next ...at least for worms of the earth??
I know Marvel did adapt this story but I’m not sure it’s been reprinted. I will have to check. I might have the original Savage Sword 🗡 issue…maybe.
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Issues 16 to 17 I think. Barry Windsor smith and Tim Conrad. Fabulous stuff and very true to the Howard original.
@@ottohoulihan2743 they were great. I remember that! I will check and see if I have them.
