The JSA did indeed first appear in All-Star #3 (even though that issue was just them relating their solo adventures) and the meeting was simply a framing device.
After the many times you have mentioned the book The city by simak I have finally read it. I feel I owe you a debt of gratitude. I, for one, would not have wanted to die without reading this book beforehand. To a man of Great Taste thank you.
J. Allen St. John produced many of the illustrations in the early Burroughs books. My dad was born in 1918 and received many Grosset and Dunlap editions as a boy. He had these books among his limited library, and I and my older brother were introduced to Burroughs by these volumes. Burroughs is considered pulp fiction and racially insensitive today, but we didn't know any better. We loved them.
I thought Buscema did really incredible work on monster of Frankenstein. I wish he had done a long run on the character. Some of his best work honestly
I wish they had a Tatzan channel on T.V. showing ALL the Tarzan movies and cartoons that would be awesome that and a Planet of the Apes channel would be welcome as well.
I think I need to read another Tarzan book because I read the first and while it was alright it was no Princess of Mars which I loved
Your brief burst of song really took me back to Thanksgiving 1980 when I first saw the Hobbit aired on TV. Love it!
Looks like a beautiful book. This video happens to come as I’m reading Tarzan of the Apes for the second time. The first was so long ago I don’t remember what I thought of it, but boy is this a slog. Not enjoying it at all. I plan on reading more Tarzan books, which hopefully are more action oriented. Not that several pages on Tarzan learning to read the entire English language from a children’s book wasn’t gripping of course, lol.
Just a minute, that's not 'Stately Vaughn Manor'! Was this from a time when Roger was still in the land of the living? Bless his cotton bandages! 😊
There was a really good Tarzan animated series in the late ‘70s that I remember watching on Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid
Good evening Sir Michael, Roger and Mr Clock Brilliant book! I must find a copy I have never been a fan of the movies, but those Gold Key Comic Covers are in the must part more Than Brilliant. George Wilson told a story using just the cover, followed by Russ Manning, Paul Norris and Mike Royer, which of course led to the Great Joe Kubert for the DC run but of course none could come near J Allen St John and those early pulp and book covers, and I was lucky enough to stumble across what hid Grand masters of Fantasy book! Great work Sir Michael Salutations from Al The GoldKeyFourcolorkidownunda
I would kill for an audiobook of you reading Varney
That Martian Chronicles book is amazing....!
Recently got a collected works of audio unabridged Lovecraft. This story blew my head off & with each subsequent listen, more is gleaned. I live a Western Esoteric life & this encapsulates/distils this very well IMO. It's as though he has a excellent grasp on Metaphor/Metaphysics/Symbolism and weaves it into an all encompassing sort story. Looking forward to the other stories of R.Carter now. Thank you.
Yay, Tarzan! My favorite novel (TotA) an ERB my favorite author. I recently did a couple of episodes on Tarzan comics and Korak too. Favorite comics too. Great looking book. Never seen it before.
Picked this up recently, Reviewed on my blog. Goes live monday
Do you consider John Norman Gor series worthy of mention or are they too pulpy? I read them years ago together with Lin Carter Callisto books. They were fun (but not age appropriate lol)
“Just a big naked guy running through the woods.” Now we have a tagline for the next Tarzan movie.
I've become more, and more pleased that you're reading Varney, so I don’t have to. 😂
I've been reappraising Pollard's art of late, and I've come to the conclusion that it may be down to the inker, or simply the books that suited him better. I really disliked his work on Master of Kung Fu, but those Thor, and FF books look much better.
🤝
On the Tarzan cover was his rejection of MGM's offer of a contract.
Michael thank you for your inspiration. I created my first video on Robert e howard
AAHHHHHAAAHHHHHAAHHHHHAHHHHA! Ape is a complicated language. Elephant is easy. Unguwa covers pretty much everything.
"Tantor" was elephant in the Mangani language, and a male lion is "numa". Ungowa is Johnny Weissmuller-eze but was not spoken by Lord Greystoke.
I've heard Steve has sought asylum in Australia. Application still pending.......great artwork there and a nice gift from Steve D.
I saw a copy of that recently, its a lovely book for fans of Tarzan.
I don't know why Marvel didn't put out a TARZAN omnibus when they did the JOHN CARTER one. I've seen the TARZAN listed off-&-on but it has never materialized.
Personal anecdote to make me sound both important and stupid: I was down at ERB Inc. many years ago doing research for a book that was never published. Danton Burroughs was shepherding my around the back room looking for primary material and we were digging around the "mezzanine. " What's in this box here? A bunch of 1960s Ballantine Tarzan editions that had never been seen since they were packed. I had only seen these before in ratty old editions. These pristine books were f***king gorgeous. Danton offered to let me take home a set. I had no way to get them in my luggage. Obviously that's the stupid me part of the story...
Hi Michael - enjoyed the video, I'm working my way through your back catalogue of 200+ videos. I grew up in the late 70s-80s in Minidoka County Idaho (have you read this book?). I grew up loving the covers of Frazetta, Boris, but I think my favorite Tarzan book cover artist is Neal Adams - plus Kubert does a great Tarzan in the comics. I hope they could reprint those DC comics in a DC Finest format. Cheers!
Love CA Smith. He could put more descriptive and emotive heft in one page than you'll get in an entire multi volume high fantasy series. 😮
My first exposure to Tarzan were reruns of those charmingly awful Johnny Weissmüller films from the late 40s. Everything was filmed on sound stages and Johnny himself was getting a bit too old for the part. But I loved it. Lex Barker also did a great job taking over as Tarzan in my opinion. So that's what led me to read the books, and for me the character really started to come more alive. That's why when Greystoke came out, I was probably the only kid who'd seen it who actually appreciated what they were trying to do at the time. My favorite Tarzan book is "The Ant Men." I'm due for a reread of the series. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful tribute!
How do I not have this book?
I rolled my eyes as I read Tarzan of the Apes when I got to the talking gorillas and I just rolled them again when I learned Tarzan became immortal. Great eye exercise.
You just told a simple truth. It's easy to be a monster, but it's not easy to create a good thing. And the good things count. Evil is trivial, but that doesn't make it less dangerous.
I bought Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration when it first came out. Time sure does pass quickly. Great book.
Ron Ely will always be my Tarzan....and I didn't start reading the books until I found your goofy channel....but I did read "At The Earth's Core" a long time ago.
Oh man, I could get lost in that for hours. ⏳📚
Started reading the full books at aprox age 8. Read them and collected them. Then loaned them to friend of my dad's and I never saw them again :( . Ah well....... My favorite was Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar.(next time you start playing with song in your head and you are thinking La La La La , think of the Queen of the Opar people that loved Tarzan: La ! Ok, I know I'm rambling
Have it, read it, loved it. Big Tarzan fan. Excellent art and information. There have been few good Tarzan movies/modern updates, and I doubt there ever will be. I think Tarzan could translate well to other media such as TV or movies, if they used ERB's original character and story points. Those are way too cool and interesting for "modern audiences," who would be scared to death by the authentic Tarzan.
Naked guy running through the woods! 😂😂 I can always count on a few laughs whenever one of your videos pops up!
I became familiar with Tarzan through the old B&W movies shown on Saturdays. Then The first TV show that I saw really enthralled me. That was the one starring Ron Ely. I wonder what I would think of it if I saw it today. 😊 Then, when I got into middle school, I finally found the novels. Wonderful!
Beautiful artwork in so many of these.
Yeah, just when I finally broke down and started watching Steve he vanished. I keep trying Tarzan, but I think I should try Burrough's other works. I probably have a better shot getting through Varney than Tarzan's gore. (Mind you,I love GoT.)
Impressive!
Funny 😁 I just watched a Documentary on Tubi 📺 🖥 about Tarzan Lord of the Apes 😮 a couple of days ago 😳 🎉❤
Wow, I have to get that book! Beautiful/ Do you know what the emblem is on the hardcover after you removed the dust jacket?
Read the first book last year and loved it. I'll be starting Return of Tarzan sometime soon. Thanks a ton, Michael! 🤘
I came for the reading report Michael but stayed for your performance as Varney. Simply brilliant.
@@charliedogg7683 thanks!
There is a listing (and some articles promoting it as a upcoming release) of Tarzan: The Buscema Years Omnibus, which keeps getting dates in amazon, ever since 2020. Back when I discovered it, I thought that the delays where caused from the lockdowns, but I now I doubt it. Dynamite Entertainment is credited as the publisher.
It makes sense that Tarzan would have that many head injuries, swinging from tree to tree. Man needs a helmet.
