    Hi Sam, Thanks for the shout outs. The picture in the back makes me blush! I'm still really happy with mine. The quality and speed of the prints has made my other printers seem slow by comparison and I'm less likely to want to use them. I would say to anyone on the fence, if you can afford this and can put it together, you won't regret it.

    Nice! Klipper is definitely different than the others, until recently it's been pretty inaccessible to people who aren't inclined towards linux, computers and pin diagrams but it's come very far this past year, and i'm trying to push it that last step with V-CoreOS. Big shoutout to the Fluidd guys here, those people are just amazing and super involved in the community, gotta love it!

    I have a Voron 2.4, awesome printer. The one thing I can say that is a positive for the the ratrig is the ability to buy the kit from them. With the Voron there are kits available but what you get is mostly a mystery box that may or may not have good parts.I am very tempted to get a ratrig as well.

    • @Popatoh
      @Popatoh 3 роки тому +2

      The kit sadly contains some lower quality items, such as the idlers, bearings, unbranded linear rails, broken magnets, out of spec printed parts that need to be drilled... Having bought one I recommend everyone actually self soiurces this printer instead.

    • @TheSanzca
      @TheSanzca 3 роки тому

      @@Popatoh that is somewhat disappointing to hear. At least you can easily get the big things like the frame, build plate etc from them and then source the rest. With linear rails now a day I think cheap ones can still do the job. I bought robotdigg rails and to be honest, they are also unlabelled and similar in quality as all the other cheap rails, I do not think they make them, just assemble them. The motto these days is profits before quality. Still the printer seems nice.

    • @TeaObvious
      @TeaObvious 3 роки тому +2

      @@TheSanzca One note to what Popato said: The early idlers, such as mine, had a quality issue caused by the manifacturer, not because ratrig cheaped out. Sonat replaced mine without any argumentation and as little wait time as possible. Broken magnets, can't say anything here, but if one does report this to ratrig, then they are happy to give good customer service.
      Thats the biggest point about ratrig, that their customer service is superb. A week ago i ordered some custom components from them and actually made a mistake, where my CAD was 1cm short. My odered extrusions where already cut, but they still wanted to help me and did recut new extrusions, without having me pay any extra money.
      The printed parts are really a hit or miss. Mine broke, because i did not drill some holes and thus i had to reprint them. If this has changed, dunno. I think so. If one is worried about the printed parts, get someone else to print them for you. there are alredy ides in the discord to create a PIF, where we offer pats in abs rather than petg et. :)
      Regarding the rails, they are unlabeled but the quality is good. they run smooth, silent and without any wobble. hiwin might be better, the difference is there but marginal. The difference is, that not every rail is the same, i had one rail which was very easy to move instead of the normal "easy to move". Of couse this went into my x-axis. With hiwin i would expect that all rails are the same. (never had hiwin until so i can't compare)

    • @TheSanzca
      @TheSanzca 3 роки тому +3

      @@TeaObvious yes, the make or break as far as a good company vs. a bad one goes is for sure the after sales support and it sounds like ratrig is doing it right. I understand that even when passionate about something, you still have to make money and a business has to make a profit and as far as parts and part quality goes I am not too stuck on that as a lot of 3d printing parts are really consumables (the hot cold cycle does take a toll on most anything) and will need to be replaced at some point, that is probably a given. So, unless you are printing parts for NASA, no need for HIWIN rails etc. In any case, for each hiwin rail you can probably get a complete set of rails for your printer, pick the best ones and you are sill miles ahead as far as cost goes. In any case, whether it is ratrig or Voron, the 3d printing space is exciting and you are sure to learn new things on the way.

    • @Robinlarsson83
      @Robinlarsson83 2 роки тому +1

      @@TeaObvious in regards to Hiwin having better QC/rails being more similar: Not sure I agree, Hiwin is still a pretty cheap brand, a good deal cheaper than real industry stuff like Bosch Rexroth, SBI or other high end gear that is used in all but the cheapest of CNC machines.
      Yes, Hiwin has gone up in price over the years so the gap upwards is smaller, not sure if their quality followed along though.
      I used Hiwin HGR-25 rails on my CNC router build a few years ago, and no, all the cars did not slide with the exact same friction there either, not even always the cars that ran on the same rail. It's small differences in the preload of the cars I guess, sadly it's not user adjustable since it's usually done with different size balls.
      But sure, Hiwin is still probably better than the cheapest Chinese rails, but if that matters in a 3D printer for hobby use, I kind of doubt it? How often do linear rails fail due to manufacturer defects?
      If the 2 Y cars run with very different friction I suppose that can be a problem in a Core XY setup though?

      @@TheRealSamPrentice Yeah, I've been looking at a lot of alternatives, and while the V-Core 3 is both more expensive and seems like more time to put together than I'd like to invest, it really seems like the most solid option out there. It'll be a little while before I take the plunge though, I want to get a resin printer first, to give me the capability for super-fine detail and things like threaded mechanical parts. To me, 3D printing is more a means to an end than the end in itself, but investing time and funds to get the RatRig level of print quality and reliability seems like it'll save me both time and money in the long run :-) Thanks again for the superb work you're putting out, not to mention taking the time to reply to my post!

    I almost went with the RatRig, but in the end I decided to build a HevORT because I wanted something bigger (595mm x 595mm x 595mm is what I'm building, but you can go bigger), and I wanted better parts, including: 12mm wide belts drive belts, ball screws for the Z axis, carbon fiber gantry tube, titanium fasteners, linear rails, 3030 extrusions, Duet controller and expansion board, and 72 volt Teknic Clearpath servos for the X & Y axis. The price tag for taking up most of the spare area in my hobby room is going to fall between $2500 and $3000. I'm sure that it will be more with the guarding that it is going to require (or I could just go cheap with a sign that says: "Do not work on live machine with remaining fingers!").
    Nothing wrong with the RatRig, anyone who owns one should be very happy with it. I just wanted more.
    So, please forgive the interruption, and do go on about your beast.

    Apart from obvious shipping cost, would one save considerable money by buying the parts separately? Obviously people will buy the kit, but why would they actually offer the design for free?
    I do understand the idea of open source, and people will always pay for a kit instead of hunting around themselves but still.
    Very cool.though, I think I'm sold. Been thinking about both prusa and flashforge, but seems I'm actually off to place an order for a ratrig.

    • @TheRealSamPrentice
      @TheRealSamPrentice  2 роки тому +1

      Great question! The origins of RatRig I believe have a lot to do with the open source element. If you look at kits like the Voron you are kind of left in limbo with where you buy your kit and perhaps what you end up with. RR stumbled into 3D printing almost by accident when they found that people were buying their cut extrusion for building 3d printers.
      Roll on a little while they have now come up with their own solutions which again have interesting origins. I like to think of having a mobile phone contract that you don't ever have to commit to and thats the beauty of RatRig its "your choice" and if you have the means to make your own, go for it. If not then buy the kit and build it without compromising on quality or makeshift parts.
      I think this approach is unique but not uncommon as open source 3D printing or 3D printing without copyright or patients is the way this whole hobby started out. RR are super humble and drive passion to and from the community. This is a quality that I love and respect.

    This weekend just past, I have started a 100% diy sourced version of the Ratrig. I am lucky enough to have access to a very large CNC router and laser cutter to help the process along. Once I get a few more of the components I’ll start a build log. We are building the 500, so I’m certainly looking forward to it. Would you recommend the Hemera for an all in 1 solution?

    EVA is just adding weight to the hotend.
    Just use aluminium plate and use screw to atach the hotend or the nem17 to the rails and done.

    I have a rpi4 over and ready, and a bondtech ddx v2 with a mosquito hotend, 450c thermistor and 50w heater on my cr10s pro, I hate this stupid bedslinger, one of the worst buys I have ever done, I have upgraded it to death from bondtech bgm bowden setup with microswiss hotend, to this ddx, and I regret taking that route extremely extremely hard
    Mostly based on the bed and that its so uneven that its silly, even after purchasing a new plate for it from creality
    There is 2 things, reliability and size I need and want, that together, speed I dont care much about, that is a nice bonus, so that is why I am saving for a ratrig 500, I just will need a lot of help learning klipper and set it up
    i will continue watching your channel for the klipper setup, I print rc cars/boats and planes, and for the planes it would be so great to be able to print both faster and more reliable, as with my E5+ I run, that works great but is slow too, but at least it works fine and is pretty reliable but I need and want better

    The kinematic bed. The more I look. The more it is not good. 3 points determine a geometric plain. 3 points do not make a stable square, retangular, or circular plane. Period. Otherwise your floors in all buildings would be triangular supported to save on costs and materials. But, they are not. However, RatRig's 3 points does create a stable triangle bed. If, you only load within the sides of the triangle created by the 3 points. Sorry. It's physics. Experiment: put cinder blocks under your bed. Support the foot with 2 and your head with one in the center. Have a good night's sleep. Oh, LOL>

  • @Popatoh
    @Popatoh 3 роки тому +2

    I have to strongly disagree with some parts of this review. While yes, the v-core itself is brilliant, I do not think the praise for RatRig as a company is warranted. They have had god awful communication (and by that I mean a total lack thereof, as they announced 4 week lead times and it took them 10-12 weeks to ship out units while staying awfully quiet). They still claim 6 week lead times currently knowing full well that can't be achieved, which is dishonest at best.
    Also you mention they do their best to make this a premium experience, so I genuinely have to ask : Have you read the instructions for assembling the printer? Other than the fact that half of it is still missing (wiring, firmware setup, eva for anything other than the bmg + v6, support for other combos that they themselves sell, etc), there's also the fact that a lot of the instructions are jumbled and in the wrong order. It feels like amateur hour when compared to even instructions by most current chinese vendors.
    Not to mention the quality issues on some of the parts, like a few people have reported issues with the provided idlers/bearings, plus I honestly don't know what to think of the unbranded rails or the printed parts that need to be drilled.
    Once it was assembled the printer was fine, but the experience from purchase to assembly felt worse than any of the chinese brands I bought from before. Would totally recommend to source your own kit and get it in a more timely manner.

      Hey @popato I totally value your comments! but to answer you on each of your points -
      My communication started just over a year ago with RatRig where I was looking for a 3D Printer that would replace the S5. The communication at times is slower than preferred but they are a small business attempting to cope with a large amount of orders. Having run a small business myself I totally understand that communication is really key and this is a problem for sure. One that I certainly will pass down to them, however i'm sure their team will read these comments too.
      From what I understand there have been delays with various part being shipped to them to be able to ship the whole product out. How this is communicated should be improved.
      I have read the instructions and I personally found them to be pretty good and in my experience vastly better than any of the Chinese printers that I've been sent to review over the pat year. Again personal experience and I guess you cant give everyone the best ride every-time.
      On the EVA side the product is separate from RatRig, because of all the options I can see where you are coming from especially when you are trying to find your way through all the noise.
      My advantage on this side is seeing EVA move up in its version history along with speaking to Pawel, RatRig and Slice Engineering in order to understand the benefits and limitations to use. On the BMG side I really like the product and i've just ordered a LGX and Orbiter to see which one works for the stuff i'm printing.
      Personally I didn't have any need to drill anything, the kit that I received was fully formed and working well. The only thing I needed to re-order was the LDO motors as I wanted speed and torque settings to be a little more responsive.
      I'm honestly sorry to read that your experience wasn't top notch, but again when compared to other Chinese products say.. CR6 or Anycubic Vyper as a stock machine these have both had enormous challenges from sensors not working to electronic shorts on the bed, leading to melting smoking motherboards. These from hobbyist industry leaders. I'd say there is a big challenge to get things right every-time. RatRig members really push discord, and I really don't do discord but that seems the way that community supported products seem to be going. As you say there are things that I don't like about the process, for example when I got the VCore Pro, then 2 week later there was a release of the 1.2, so I built that only for the 1.3 version to come out. Obviously you can't stop progress when things are changing at that sort of rapid rate.
      I really like the open source element, and buying your own stuff and making it yourself makes it really accessible to a wider audience.
      Are you setup and running now?

    • @Popatoh
      @Popatoh 3 роки тому +1

      @@TheRealSamPrentice The CR-6 SE is honestly one of the worst printers ever released, like a ton of creality products so I wasn't really thinking of that when mentioning chinese brands, was more thinking of brands such as Artillery, sovol and the like...
      The discord that you mention however is unofficial, and it has no RR employees on it (unless mikkel is an employee, in which case he's the only one on there), sadly the gist of the communication (or lack thereof) is done via Facebook, which is obviously not the best platform to do this, what with the awful search engine and difficulty of finding relevant information amidst the people just showing off their benchies...
      Just curious for the instructions part, sorry to be annoying, but did you not have issues with stuff such as the belts for the idlers being listed as a last step when it is so much easier to route them before the printed parts are screwed into place? I have had to disassemble parts of the gantry/idler system each time I noticed that.
      Also again the wiring part was just a diagram with nary any instructions, had this not been my 8th printer I would not have had a single clue on how to proceed, let alone the firmware that is geared towards one single non duet board (I know v-core OS now has 3 boards supported but the digram is only for the SKR pro). I also tried the duet version and I'm just wondering why they only provided a barebones config... Surely when you consider the default config ships with a duet, there should be at least an entire setup for that?
      In any case, that was my experience and my aim was more to warn others than to complain per se. Having built a couple printers from the ground up I was fine with the process and ended up with the machine purring at a nice 7500 accel, however I just feel that for fairness' sake it is important to talk of the negatives as well.
      One last note though, I understand fully that RR got overwhelmed by the response to the printer, my only gripe was that they did not warn people of the delays, and even worse kept (and still keep) advertising deliberately wrong estimates for shipping.
      Sorry for the long winded reply, that is pretty much all I had to say on it anyway so I won't be wasting more of your time hopefully :D

      @@Popatoh Okay Well Mikkel and Pawel are on the discord for sure. With Pawel being the man behind the whole V-Core3 design elements. What their status is with the company is something that I don't fully know. They did all join me for a Q&A that I live-streamed a few months ago explaining which elements they were responsible for. I agree on the facebook side and I have a couple of other hobbies where I miss out due to how facebook works. On the routing side for the belts I did also use the cad file to understand the routing. I pulled the belts though (like you say) after the fact but didn't need to take them fully apart to get that routing. Also when I did that I noticed that on the top right hand side my idler pulley was out of alignment but could still access it with a small alan key.
      I'm doing some work with the RR guys to get and produce a better video on talking about Klipper and better understanding of what the hell its all about! That I would say was my biggest vice as I didn't have a clue what to do. That of course could be a massive flaw, but of course and from what you are saying the choice of drivers, how to wire, what motors etc could lend to quite a few ways of making this product in its kit form. Id say there is certainly more work to be done in the setup and showing how this can be done.
      You will have noticed that 1 question for this video really sat with me, so i'll have a think and see how these things could be improved for people that are looking for this kind of information as its really important and could effect the whole enjoyment of the build.
      It's good to talk and i'll go back to RR with these comments and see what can be done to improve things moving forward :)
