    Very interesting! You've motivated me to replace the after market aluminum valve cover on my 1969 TR6 with the OEM tin, which came in a box take-offs when I purchased the car. I have a question: You were careful to check the temperature rating on the paint and clear coat, but not on the primer. I looked up the primer that you are using, Eastwood SKU 16014Z, and on the Eastwood web site it says, "We do not recommend using this primer for engine applications. We would recommend using our 2K Engine Primer and then top coating with our 2K Engine Paint." I'm wondering if, since you've finished your valve cover, and have had a chance to drive around a bit, have you experienced any issues with the primer?

      Yes. Use the highest temp paints you can. I’ve done valve covers with and without primer. I think they come out better without primer myself. Temperature checks show it appears to get hottest around the vent pipe and up front by the water pump. I’m always scratching a little hear and there as I’m always tinkering. Next time I’ll do the powder coat so I have a bit better durability.

      @@DIYHelp Well I just finished my own original tin. I have to say it came out very nice. Thanks for the inspiration! I made two changes to your process: 1) I could not find Eastwood paints locally, so I used VHT "Flameproof" gray primer (part number SP100) and "flat aluminum" header paint (part number SP117), both rated for 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, I used the silicon gasket made especially for the OEM tin. It has a "D" cross-section specifically designed for the original tin gasket, as opposed to the flat gasket that better fits the aftermarket aluminum covers.
